Book Description
An introduction to architectural thought, this text is a thorough and accessible discussion in search of the principles of the design process.
Documenting the non-verbal processes and decisions that architects and designers make is a difficult task, but one that is important when trying to understand the development of architectural design through the ages. Michael Brawne uses his experience as a practicing architect, academic and educator to provide an overview of the subject. By looking at the practices and buildings of architects past and present he incorporates history and philosophy in the search for a theory of design.
* Provides a well-rounded look at the development of architectural thought.
* Written at a level that is accessible for professionals and students.
* Illustrates how the design process has developed from antiquity to the present day.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2001-07-18
This is a great book that does what it says--it takes you step-by-step through the art of "realistic" (representational) collage. The author describes the various media (mostly paper, but also metal & fabric) for the finished collage and the different ways to adhere those media. The book also contains a section on other methods of achieving realistic collage by looking at other artists' work. It's definately worth the money if you enjoy collage.
Fabulous collage ideas!.......2000-08-21
Originally saw this book while visiting the artist's gallery in Maine. It is attractive, concise and FULL of ideas for tons of projects. The book does a great job of inviting people to use their own creativity while giving them guidance and support. I would recommend it to both beginners and advanced collage artists.
Book Description
Guy Bourdin's surreal and erotic imagery filled the pages of international fashion magazines in the 1970s. His revolutionary ad campaign for Charles Jourdan shoes fascinated readers with photographs as provocative and edgy today as they were almost three decades ago. Bourdin's influence on modern photography is sweeping and far-reaching-yet he died in 1991 without ever having published a collection of his work. Now his son, Samuel Bourdin, working with creative director Fernando Delgado, has created this gorgeous overview of some of the finest images from his father's legacy. The powerful images are accompanied by a foreword by writer and critic Luc Sante, and a biographical essay by Michel Guerrin, photography critic of Le Monde.

master of depraved-chic.......2002-03-03
Anyone who ever was blown away by the spectacularly original and outrageously suggestive fashion photographs of the notorious French and Italian editions of Vogue from the red-hot seventies....will savor this collection of legendary images by the twisted visionary master, Guy Bourdin. Mr. Bourdin, alongside Mr. Helmut Newton, changed what was acceptable as images to sell luxurious, overpriced designer products. They introduced imagry inspired by pornography, violent crime scenes, surrealism, pop art and film noir to high- fashion magazines and started a trend that will never go out.....even though the versions recreated today no longer have the style, taste or originality of these masters.....ironic, considering both these master image makers were considered "tasteless" by many subscribtion-cancellers at their peak of editorial dominance.
This book could have had better printing quality....and some actual magazine spreads could have been included....but overall, it documents and celebrates the art of a man who pushed the envelope creating images of extreme sophistication and style inspite of the shock value.
A great first collection........2001-11-27
This sample of Guy Bourdin's work is an interesting glimpse of some of his photographs. Little known in America, Bourdin was well known in the world of fashion photography and often copied by well known, popular photographers. This selection offers a taste of his work and a hint of what will follow in further releases of his photographs.

Nuts & Bolts of Making it Happen !.......2002-08-06
It is an awesome book..every real estate salesperson should be required to read it!
A fantastic reference book.......2002-03-22
After reading the book I realise that success in selling real estate depends a great deal on techniques which the author share with us in her excellent book. They are practical and may be applied to listing and selling homes even in Singapore, where I live and work, thousands of miles away from the United States of America.
I treasure this book as I refer to it constantly. For example, I have read almost all the books written on real estate and it is hard to find a more complete guide to conducting an open house successfully.
Horrible book with useless, obvious advice........2001-10-29
Handing out pumpkins on Halloween and giving out scratchpads to everyone on the street is not part of the real estate business. Prospecting regularly, however, is. The book contains only 18 pages on prospecting and the rest of the book is useless garbage.
New agents who follow the advice in the book will never be doing more than 20 deal a year and will spend most of their hard earned money on scratchpads, stupid cheap client gifts and halloween pumpkins and their time learning "quick-speak inventory" and the script for a boring three-hour listing presentation outlined in the book, instead of selling and making deals.
Read a Mike Ferry or a Floyd Wickman publication for information on how to build a profitable and efficient real estate practice. Do yourself a favor: don't buy this book.

This is a "Must Read" for New Agents.......2000-04-13
This book assisted me immediatly with ideas and suggestions. I got my license in January & 2 1/2 months later have completed my 1st transaction, with 2 more in escrow and a great listing. I especially appreciate the subject index as it allows me to target specific areas of particular interest, like FSBO's or Prospecting. This book is definitely worth the investment.
A "must read" for every agent, new and old.......1999-01-25
This book is the most complete treatise on how to become an effective and successful real estate agent that I have found. It covers every aspect of becoming a "top producer" for those that are willing to work. This edition is an update of "How to List and Sell Real Estate in the 90's" which I read last year. It contains much of the same information but addresses the practice of real estate using the Internet and some new agency issues such as exclusive buyer broker agency. Every realtor should have a copy of this book in his/her office!

would not recommend.......2007-03-26
We use this book in the class and most of us don't like it. The book just doesn't do a good job explaining many things. Unless you are an expert in the field or at least have prior experience I would not recommend you this book.
Good overview of molecular evolution studies but a bit outdated.......2006-03-16
If you're not familiar with DNA sequences analysis and inferring phylogenies, this book is a must read (as far as I know the only introduction book to the field). But it's a bit outdated (Bayesian analysis not covered).
Nice figures.......2004-01-08
I'm new to molecular evolution and have been confused with various terms and concepts (e.g., cladogram vs. phylogram vs. dendrogram, plesiomorphy vs. apomorphy vs. autapomorphy vs. synapomorphy vs. homoplasy, etc.). Reading other books that try to explain these concepts mostly in words only added more confusion.
Every page in this book contains highly illustrative figures that accompanies well written text. Of course, not all sections are not immediately clear to understand, and I would need to read other books as well.
If you are new to molecular evolution, start with this book along with any other books that may suit your particular need.
Trees and more trees.......2000-11-27
Although molecular phylogenetic analysis can be extremely complex, this reference provides an introduction to the subject that is straightforward to read. The reference begins with consideration of trees, which are structures used to model actual evolutionary relationships between genes or entire lifeforms. It then provides an introduction to molecular and population genetics. Coding as well as noncoding DNA (tandem repeats, transposable elements, retroviruses, spacer DNA) is considered. The reference then considers how genetic change can be measured, followed by how we can deduce molecular phylogenies. The validity of the molecular clock is then considered, along with a discussion of the neutralist-selectionist debate. The reference finally considers how different phylogenies can be combined to determine actual phylogeny, reconciled trees, and rates of diversification.
Handy read.......2000-03-25
This book is very well written and a handy tool for anyone who is new to molecular evolution. Nice diagrams and concise chapters. The authors know how to break up the sometimes demanding ideas into appropriate bites. Perfect for grad students and senior undergrads.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating world of nature........2005-07-25
First let me say,I read the 3 reviews and have nothing to quarrel about with any of them. This book has been around for a long time, must have sold a pile of copies to schools, libraries, the general public, and what surprises me is that to date only 3 reviews have been submitted.
I have a great interest in nature and science in general, and a fair sized personal library, which includes over 1000 Natural History books.Though largely birds,my books cover the gambit from the simple and general to the difficult and extensively detailed. Most are of the type amateurs ,enthusiasts, and nature
lovers would own as opposed to what would be called college textbooks.
In fact;I own several by the Stokes. This book is very indicative of the books they have authored. They are about as basic as you can get. They are very easy to read and I say this as a compliment. They are written in both the dificulty and detail level of middle school (grade 6 to 9 )If this is what you want this book should satisfy you. However;if you have this book on your shelf, see an insect, and expect it to be much help in identifying or learning much about its behavior,it probably won't be much help.Nor could any book of this size be when it covers such a broad subject. In fact, even your everyday encyclopedias would give you more detail on any insect actually covered in this book, not to say anything about the vast amount not even covered.
There is a Bibliography at the back that lists a lot of source material but none are referenced in the text;and highly unlikely to be used by the readers of the book.
Sure, when one sees a common, strange or otherwise interesting insect,it would be nice to have a book to 'find out more';the information is available but because of the vastness of the varities ,it requires much digging.
Nature is fascinating and will provide much enjoyment but if you want any more than a cursury look, you only get out of it what you put into it.
Insects are no different than stars, they can be enjoyed and marveled at by everyone .
I have no intention in my comments to knock this book .The author has only tried to give the reader a glimpse into the world of insects ,and for no other reason to share his interests with others and to show what marvels await the curious.
bit disappointing.......2002-06-11
The information in this book is a bit generic and lacking in interesting factual information. I find the chapters disappointing when I read about a particular insect. The text is not particularly inspiring and does not capture the fascination of the insects' natural history. The topic is a fine one but it is handled much better by classic works like Fabre and Linsenmaier's "Insects of the World". We need to encourage writing on this topic by our best natural history authors and entomologists.
terrific book!.......2001-08-06
This is a great reference! It has all sorts of insects that you come across in your lawn/gardens/woods. I use it constantly when i'm out looking at butterflies and get distracted looking at other insects. Its great. It breaks the insects down into those that you'll see in spring, summer, fall and winter. It has reference tables on where to look for the insects (e.g. ponds, fields, ground, etc) and tells about their lifecycles. Its just facinating. You can learn a lot without being heavy into the science of orders and classes and things like that. Really a great resource
unique and invaluable.......1999-01-31
Since the day I purchased this book I have not stopped consulting it's pages of clear, simple information. Accompanied by a drawing showing the kind of habitat where the insect is likely to be found, a brief description of the insect's life cycles and observable habits are touched upon. This book isn't going to make anyone an expert on the subject of entomology but that isn't its aim. What it will do is to help you in locating many different kinds of insects throughout the seasons and enrich the experience of observing their behavior. The perfect companion book to all your more scientific texts.
