Book Description
This is at once a compendium for designers and an entertaining essay on the architecture of Asia's most glamorous tropical island by one of its foremost admirers. Landscape and architectural designer Made Wijaya draws on his extensive photographic archives, compiled over the past 30 years, to present a visual study of Balinese architecture: its origins, elements, variations, and vagaries.
The book opens with an overview of Balinese architecture in its human context--the village. It then looks at the basic elements of Balinese architecture--the walled courtyard and the pavilion. Further chapters examine building materials, the Balinese love of ornamentation and the architectural hybrids resulting from other ethnic influences. Progressing through the book, Bali's intricate built landscape becomes legible and ever more surprising.
With a sharp eye for trends, and passionate opinions about how Balinese design principles should be applied, Wijaya enhances his survey of traditional Balinese architecture with examples of its adaptation in modern private houses and boutique hotels on the island. In addition to Wijaya's own archive photographs, the book is illustrated with the work of internationally acclaimed artists; specialist photographers including Tim Street-Porter and Rio Helmi; and drawings by Chang Huai-Yan and Deni Chung.
Designers will find Architecture of Bali useful as a source book for materials, built form, ornamentation and ideas about the use of space. Lovers of Bali will welcome its documentation of a rapidly changing world.

A Masterpiece.......2003-08-24
I am Balinese and grew up surrounded by Balinese architecture in my home village of Ubud. I have also built extensively - my restaurant, shops, houses and villas. I love Balinese architectural forms and materials.
I am very happy with this book. It is a tremendous contribution to the subject and it is surprising that so little was written before. It is lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs - many taken by Made Wijaya himself - and sadly many of the buildings no longer exist. Thank goodness, there is now a record of them.
It is a coffee table book - but it's much more than that - the text is detailed, well researched and easy to follow.
I have no hesitation in recommending it.

A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO PERSEVERED.......2005-05-01
This superb folio-size companion to the PBS television special of the same name explores the history and psychology of Irish immigration to the United States.
With some 100 duotone photographs, it is an inspiring story of those who survived disease on the "coffin ships" as they attempted to reach our shores. The vivid text brings to life the sagas of Irish entrepreneurs who rose to prominence in politics, agriculture, business, religion and culture.
Most importantly it is the story of courageous human beings, people who left everything behind them to search for a better life. And, in so doing, they forged lasting impressions on past and present life in America. Never forgetting "home," they imagined and often lived the American dream.
This splendid book speaks volumes to the descendants of the Irish immigrants and to all who have a vision and struggle to make it reality.

Description:
We reformulate the traditional AS-AD growth model of the Neoclassical synthesis, stage I, as a disequilibrium approach to aggregate supply analysis, with sticky wages, sticky prices, myopic perfect foresight on current inflation rates, and adaptively formed medium-run expectations concerning the investment and the inflation climate. Both LM curve and an interest rate policy rule are considered. The resulting nonlinear 5D model of labor and goods market disequilibrium avoids striking anomalies of the traditional Neoclassical synthesis AS-AD model. It exhibits instead Keynesian feedback dynamics proper with asymptotic stability for low adjustment speeds and with cyclical loss of stability when some adjustment speeds are sufficiently large. In such cases, downward money wage rigidities serve to make the overall dynamics bounded and thus viable. We thus obtain a baseline D(is equilibrium)AS-AD model with Keynesian feedback channels with a rich set of stability/instability features as sources of the business cycle. The outcomes of the model stand in stark contrast to those of the currently fashionable (closely related) model of the New Keynesian alternative.

Book Description
Hukukane Nikaido is an economic theorist whose work helped lead the way for modern research in dynamic economics. Prices, Cycles, and Growth provides a selection of his major papers since the 1970s. They offer uncommon insights into problems of instability and their effects on growth, income distribution, and unemployment, among other fundamental issues in macroeconomics.
Nikaido's focus on disequilibrium (the failure of overall supply and demand to balance out), imperfect competition, and the effects of pricing changes on income distribution is a natural outgrowth of the Keynesian tradition, which emphasizes the instability of markets and the capacity for economies to get stuck in recessions and inflationary periods.
The essays in part I look at stability of competitive equilibrium and implications, while those in part II shift attention to the stability analysis of monopolistic competition in explicit models of pricing and adjustments, in intersectoral or macroscopic frameworks. The essays in part III inquire into growth in contexts such as optimality, or with or without regard to interrelation with cycles. Part IV reconsiders Marxian economics using the rigorous tools of dynamic analysis.
Researchers will find this selection of Nikaido's major papers to be a handy reference. Younger students will discover why he is known for impeccably high standards of model construction and analysis, and for his concentration on the truly fundamental aspects of the subject. A new introduction by the author provides valuable background for the collection.

Walk Like a Giant, Sell Like a Madman is a recapitulation of the techniques that made real-estate sales veteran Ralph R. Roberts a giant in the world of sales. It offers basics for beginners, a review for pros who hope to advance, and a primer for entrepreneurs who must sell their products or services as well as themselves. By relating personal experiences and those of other super-sellers, Walk Like a Giant shows how specific practices--such as maintaining client databases, investing in cutting-edge technology, and engaging in self-promotion--can make the difference between failure and success.
Customer Reviews:
Great book and great service.......2006-03-20
Excellent response time getting this book. Quick, professional and a great read.
Not what I was expecting. . ........2005-02-17
I think someone else wrote the title. It doesn't fit the book, to begin with. Then there are these reviews. Half seem to be written by someone on the payroll. What positive sales information I managed to extract from this book (as minimal as it is) could have been written in a 5 page summary. For anyone that is new to sales and involved solely in real estate sales, then I could see them getting something to add to their arsenal of tricks. I am in automotive sales, however, and though the title suggests that I could find nuggets and be able to sell "anything" I am disappointeed in what I read. A better book (for automotive sales) is "Cars and People; How to Put the Two Together" or (for a good sales foundation) any EARLY Zig Ziglar book will do.
Entertaining, Insightful & Fun!.......2004-04-17
First, I rarely post comments about a book. Second, I'm not in "sales" (the type where I'm only paid by commission based on what I can sell) and the one and only sales job I've ever had was when I was 15 years old... not quite a million years ago, but close! Third, the goofy cover caught my attention - I was searching for a design book.
Ralph's book is fun, entertaining, and insightful -- not a perfect book filled with glitz and glamour, but a human story about his life in sales, his trials, and earned success. As a designer, I'm always looking for new inspiration and angles that drive me to seek the best for my creative process, but I have little time to READ books all the way through, word for word. In fact, I tend to look at picture and process only and skim read the rest in most books, except design related books... Anyhow, each chapter of Ralph's book compelled me to read more and to learn about his sales techniques, systems, and his mini life-story. By the time I finished from front to back cover, I was truly inspired to consider sales as part of a key change in my career path.
No, I'm not going into "sales" -- the commissions only type, but using my ability to negotiate with process that helps me and the people I work with so there's a win-win situation for everyone. If only I'd known to do that when I was 14 and unable to make one commission sale in 3 weeks... ha! Ralph's ideas are working like magic... in my work environment, with the public I'm required to meet, and even my family has responded in ways I'd never imagined AND I'm having fun. Thanks for this great book, Ralph!
Perfectly fits - my style.......2003-02-16
I think one of the keys to liking or disliking a book on sales is whether or not it fits your personality. I don't think you can stray too far from your core.
That said, Ralph R. Roberts and I appear to be kindred spirits and I laughed, loved and learned while reading his book. If you want to be bold, innovative and fun, and have that help you in your sales career, this book is great. If you're looking for something regimented (especially for real estate) read Danielle Kennedy, who also has some great books that I've learned from. But she doesn't fit my style.
Bottom line, after reading Ralph's book and implementing some of the lessons my RE career has started quickly and I've become known as the "go to" man in my farm.
Thanks Ralph!
Save your money there are many, many better options........2001-06-27
No new information here. Presented in a manner that is very dull and uninteresting. Save your money! There are many options that are much better.

Good Tips on Customer Service for Anyone in Sales.......2005-10-14
While Building a Continuing Relationship is tailored towards those in retail, anyone in outside sales can benefit from the book's tips in handling customer complaints.
The booklet's main theme is using the acronym "THANKS" in addressing customer complaints:
T - Thank the customer. By doing this, the customer is put at
ease and shows appreciation for his business.
H - Hearing the problem. Allow the customer to fully state the
and be prepared to be a good listener.
A - Apologize. By apoligizing for the customer being upset, you
are not accepting blame but instead are acknowledging the
customer's displeasure.
K - Know a solution. Find out what solution best satisfies the
customer.
S - Solve the problem. Resolve the complaint not to get rid of a
nuisance. Instead, take action to retain the loyalty and
trust of a valued customer.
In summary, a good and brief reminder of the importance of taking care of the customer in the sales process.

Remembering the women.......2002-04-15
Marshall's book is a wonderful addition to the oral history scholarship on women's experiences of Vietnam. It is especially significant in that it remains, to this day, one of very few books that directly address female vets in Vietnam. Though Marshall obviously has a hand in the shape the narratives take, it is important to remember when reading this book that these are not, for the most part, Marshall's words. She is not trying to make a unifying or generalizing statement about the female experience but rather seeks to let the diverse voices speak for themselves. In doing so, she uses twenty oral histories from women who served in varying capacities: as Army nurses, Red Cross recreaton workers, as volunteers for religious organizations, and as journalists. And what these stories speak of are incredibly diverse experiences in Vietnam, filled with both pain and joy, suffering and redemption. This may not be the be-all, end-all of scholarship on the subject, but it is important in that it fills a void. The histories in Marshall's book help us remain aware that Vietnam was not only a man's war.
Did She Check Out the Stories?.......2000-11-30
I thought this was a good concept for a Vietnam experience book - about 20 oral interviews with women of various Vietnam backgrounds. However, I couldn't get through it. As anyone familiar with Stolen Valor by B. G. Burkett knows, there's an awful lot of lies out there which are represented as true Vietnam experiences. I got to the story from the lady who said it most disturbed her that "her general" and six other generals and aides were killed in her area. I think the history shows that only one general in total was killed in Vietnam. So, I don't believe the author/editor did any fact checking and I don't believe she had much of a knowledge base. In another story she referred to a "gunny" sergeant as a "gunship" sergeant (although she got it right in a later story).
All in all I thought this was a pretty weak effort. The concept is still good, it just needs to be better handled.

Book Description
This book is a cultural studies reading of Canadian culture and its security dimension during the Second World War and then later the Cold War. Kristmanson uses a wide variety of evidence to construct a provocative argument about the formation and maturity of the Canadian state during the time
period other historians have characterized as Canada's evolution from colony to nation.
