Beach Houses are the first survey of the glamorous beachfront lifestyle and distinctive architecture and design for which Southern California is so famous. A must own book for people that love b&w photography. Patrick is excellent at getting the perfect angle for the image. The way the natural light and shadows enhance the objects is great. The true persons are drawn by the way the pictures are taken.

My 12 year old saw this book on one of the display tables, picked it up... for the cover (naked lady) and glanced through it. He then later came running up to me saying... Please buy this book. The pictures are excellent. Well now, my son is interested in photography as a hobby.
Superb Portraits!.......2001-03-14
This is one of the best books of portraits that it has been my pleasure to view.
Before going further, let me observe that the book contains much female nudity that would earn an "R" rating if this were a motion picture.
Glenn O'Brien in the book's introduction captures the essence of the book well, "The beauty standard is being raised once again."
Whether the subjects are beautiful (and many are) or not, the result is the same -- a deep look into the personality and character of the model done in large, vivid detail in wonderfully contrasting duotone. One of the best tests for this book is to compare the celebrity images you see here with others you have seen of these same people. These images are more warm, more revealing, and more fun to see. Mr. Demarchelier has a light touch that gets out the happiest version of a person. You'll find yourself laughing and smiling your way through this collection, for sure.
The portraits displayed here are uniformly of very high quality, and provide nice contrasts of subjects (nose rings, boulders, children, and elephants among the beautiful people).

This is real impressive in term of b&w photography. I like his creative composition and expression of forms. It is more than beautiful pic and model, and impressive techniques. The variety of subject is another good reason to get this one.
Master Portrait Photography.......1999-09-24
What Galen Rowell does for mountains, Patrick Demarchelier does for living subects. He captures the character, the inner self, the most basic essence of a subject and capture it on black and white film. It's as if he breaths on his photographs and they come to life. He does it for Hillary Clinton, he does it for giraffes--all mesmerizing to look at. I wish he could photograph everyone in the world--it would be a so much more interesting place if all the static, cliche portraits were replaced with his vivid work. The book includes color and magazine shoots, too--which prove the range of his talent. Who else could capture a different facet of the exhaustively photographed Linda Evangelista in every shot? Or make the form, the line of a model reclining on a whitewashed wall as interesting as the model's beauty? A really great book of pictures whose character, form, lines will entrance any viewer.This book -- or should I say Demarchelier's work--deserves more than five stars. How about ten?

Beautiful collection of work.......2007-08-28
This book was put to gether by the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1997 and holds an excellent overview of Demarchalier's vision. Almost exclusively presented in B&W, with the cover photograph being a notable small exception, Demarchalier's work covers portraits, stars, fabulous nobodies and African animals in equal brilliance. Covering a large time period, the most amazing point about the overall presentation is how fresh and modern they all look, together and alone. 10 years on from the book's debut, Demarchelier is still aging quite gracefully.
Some photographers have an overall style you just 'get'. Each one of their compositions somehow sings to you personally. Demarchalier achieves that with me, and reminds me why I love this art in the first place.
A must-have for any modern photography afficiando. Hard-to-find though.

What are they talking about? .......2007-05-15
Nowadays many divers are producing dive guides to their favourite destinations. Some are really good and reflect the author's life-long knowledge of the area. Sadly, far too many are poorly written and should not have been published. Technical, reference books, however, are not for those who lack the requisite qualifications which must be coupled with expertise. Who knows what misinformation may be imparted - simply because the author did not posses a complete understanding of the subject.
This is another book from White Star Publishing of Italy. It is not, however, another diving guide. A quick glance at the contents reveals how this book seeks to explain the Coral Reef - from 500 million years ago to the present day, it's geography, biology and, of course, those all-important living creatures.
That is a pretty tall order. It is, therefore, only fair that we should examine the qualifications of the author in order in order to determine the credibility of the content. I was, therefore, expecting to find a short biography explaining when and where the author obtained his PhD or other equally impressive qualifications. Sadly there is no such information - not even a pen-picture or résumé about the person responsible for writing this technical tome. In fact, apart from the two instances (book cover and page 3) where Angelo Mojetta is credited with writing the text, he receives no further mention whatsoever. Nor is he credited with having taken any of the many excellent photographs - which also include images from NASA and Oxford Scientific Films.
In short, the reader is left with no idea whether this book is the work of someone who is an eminent expert in his field or an enthusiastic amateur - and that leaves a very large question mark over the entire content. Sadly, and equally unforgivable, the publishers have also omitted a bibliography. After all, the author was certainly not around 500 million years ago - so he must have obtained his information from somewhere.
All that said, this is a well-presented and highly technical book covering the evolution of Barrier Reefs and the way they are today. We just can't be certain the information is correct. The book is supported with plenty of maps, graphs and diagrams which are generally used to good effect. The final 45 pages are devoted to artistic impressions of various fishes, invertebrates and corals. Unfortunately, however, these are flawed - both in presentation and content. Having compared the fishes drawn and described in this book with those from other titles from this same publisher, I found the same pictures are used in those other titles - where the same fish are given different names!
My final comment is reserved for this publisher's somewhat original brand of "Italian-English" for which they are renowned. Because phrases are expressed differently from language to language, any "word by word" literal translation often looks very silly. This book opens with the following two sentences which speak for themselves and come complete with spelling mistakes (marked with "(sic)" each time) and lack of punctuation:
"In an ideal catalogue of the natural wonders on earth a prominent position must be reserved alongside the rain forests (sic), the Africa savanna (sic) and the ices of Antarctica for coral reefs. Warm crystal-clear waters inviting exploration, exuberant life manifesting itself in a myriad of forms and colours - these are the principal (sic) features of the extraordinary habitats peculiar to the tropical regions of our planet, incomparable aquatic environments in equilibrium between the sea and the land and prey to the forces of both."
If you would like to read more of the same - then this is the book for you. Personally, I think it a pity that such excellent photography is wasted on what is easily the hardest book I have ever tried to read and understand.

I purchased this book recently in Sydney in preparation for an overseas diving vacation. It is a visual delight and something I continually review as it gives me great pleasure due to the amazing underwater photography.
