A Work of Art in Development Graphics.......2002-05-14
I publish a bi-monthly newsletter on Africa and this book has been an enormous source of help. The graphics are wonderful and very true to life. This is no slick clip art but original works of art that capture the essence of the rural/urban life. I recommend this book wholeheartedly and it has now become the most important book in our office.
The best source of development-related clip art around.......1998-10-21
There's an awful lot of clip art around these days, mostly on CD-ROM. But it's nearly all Western-oriented: blue-eyed blondes answering telephones, and that sort of thing. There's very little that can be used in developing countries, suited to the needs of development professionals, extension workers or health educators.
The author (a professional illustrator) has put together an excellent collection of her own black-and-white line drawings. It concentrates on health, but also has illustrations of many other aspects of rural development in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
I use it all the time. Highly recommended.

Book Description
This book traces the history and techniques of underground photography, from the first pictures taken in the catacombs beneath Paris to the pyramids of Egypt, from American caves to Cornish tin mines.
The opening chapters are concerned with the earliest experiments to record images without the aid of the sun in the 1860s. Innovative photographers have since used techniques ranging from limelight, Bengal fire, arc lights, and even magnesium mixed with gunpowder to specially designed electronic flashguns and powder burners.
Ten years in the writing, this is the only book of its kind and is based on primary sources of information throughout. Howes’ extensive use of quotations retains the immediacy of the challenges both amateur and professional photographers have had to overcome.
The book is illustrated with 160 engravings, line drawings, and photographs, many of which have never been published before. Fully referenced and indexed, it can be used to identify and trace photographers and rare photographs worldwide.

Book Description
Managing New Product Development and Innovation provides a new approach to the microeconomics of innovation by measuring the technical quality of new products and guiding the managers of innovation and technology in the central considerations of today's knowledge-based companies.
The volume features a selection of practical microeconomic tools for managing new product development and innovation. By quantifying product features and evaluating the costs and market value of improvements, a simple yet powerful conceptual framework is created. Using this framework, creative business models can be built, along with innovative products, services and processes that achieve marketplace success.
The authors address five key questions facing managers of knowledge-based companies: Which new features should be added to existing products? Which radically new features should be innovated? How can marketing and R&D be integrated? How can the value of brand names be estimated and optimized? How can the sophistication of product technology be measured - both at a given point in time and between two points in time?

Managing New Product Development and Innovation: A Microecon.......2001-12-11
I think this is a real handy tool not just for people who do not have a strong background in Management and Economics, but also for those who had spend many years studying this subjects and need to organize their knowledge. This book simplify the task of accessing references, and also creates on the reader the notion of the dynamic links between the different topics mentioned on the book.

More of market commentary in nature than analytical.......2005-01-22
I am a newbie in the REIT field, I read this book with a view to understand the market better and to understand the basic concepts involved in this field. While I must say I did pick up some basic concepts I don't think I understand the market much better than before. The concepts I did pick up was not being explained in detail by the author but he was using those factors and parameters to explain why market behaved in a particular way during, say, the 1985-1990 period.
Now, this is certainly not the book for the beginner, certainly not the book for somebody who wants to analyze how profitable a REIT would be... the mathematical formulas used in the books might be useful for the ones setting up the REIT, but for others, it's certainly not worth the money.

In a culture that seems bent on telling us that sex is wrong while at the same time using it to sell us cars and cigarettes, Susie Bright is a breath, no, hurricane of fresh air. Bright--who started her public life with the nom de plume of Susie Sexpert--is intent on telling us that talking about sex isn't just good, it is mandatory for emotional sanity and happiness. Bright is forthright, honest, and amazingly cheerful about sex. No topics are taboo and she speaks from personal experience as well as from her own extensive research. Sexual State of the Union is filled with good news, good advice, and good sense.
Book Description
Lust brings out the liar in everyone. Every erection has Pinocchio written up and down its lengthyes, everybody wants to be REAL, a real boy, an honest woman, unafraid and uprightbut then desire, the ultimate honesty, does us in. Desire doesn't give a whit about shame. Our secrets, our exaggerations and distractions, it's all just a lot of twisting in the wind as far as sex is concernedwhat we want WILL come out.
"Is our sexuality a basic, good, and precious thing that somehow became terribly misunderstood? Or is there something really evil out there in Sex Land that attaches itself to our libidos and is only held back by vigilance and caution?" asks Susie Bright in her bestselling book The Sexual State of the Union. Bright pushes the borders of propriety until they blur and become irrelevant in the face of our inherent need to touch and be touched. With candor and passion, Susie Bright proves that sexual knowledge can indeed be salvation and inspiration.

Insightful, Witty, Somewhat uneven..........2005-10-25
This book was interesting, provocative, in some places well-researched and in some places utterly fluffy. Don't get me wrong. I Love Susie Bright. I just felt like it needed more editing to make it a more cohesive piece.
But the writing is excellent, and what could possibly be more interesting as subject matter? It was fun, and her conversation with a trans friend will certainly shake up a few readers (I couldn't decide if she was being insightful or wildly insensitive).
Recommended further reading: For a solid, well-researched history of sex in America this century, read Heidenry's "What Wild Ecstasy: The Rise and Fall of the Sexual Revolution". For utter provocative gall, amazing insight and some very surprising facts, read Levine's "Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children From Sex". Both of these were riveting, less fluffy and better edited than "Sexual State of the Union". But they all seem to speak from the same base: a fundamental understanding of the importance of both sex and free speech in our society.
Frank discussion of American sexual problems.......2003-11-05
The first half of this book is an excellent and frank discussion of sexual and gendered politics in America, punctuated by the authors real life experiances. Witty and insightful, it asks the classic question: Why are Americans so sexually screwed up, and what can we do to fix it? It's also a book pointedly aimed at debunking certain right wing Christian sexual myths, and does a wonderful job of that.
However, towards the end of the book (last chapter or two) she talks about being a lesbian and friends with transexuals, it seems that she is speaking too much about her own experiances, and she isn't trying them into any broader concept. While her experiances are interesting, the title of the book is "Sexual State of the Union", so one expects a little more discourse on how her experiances relate to America on a whole.
A most educational and enlightening book.......2000-01-13
This thought provoking and sometimes shocking book came highly recommended and I pass on the same sentiments. Though always interested in expanding my consciousness, I was little prepared for the giant leap I would take with each page. Susie Bright speaks intelligently from personal experience about such topics as pornography, gender, and sexuality. She provides the reader with radical yet believable interpretations that make you want to go out and explore for yourself. She brings together the human experience to which we are born, with the secret desires and fantasies we all possess, slowly unveiling the masks we hide behind. A must read if you are ready to explore your own sexual identity and biases.
A must for fans of Susie.......1997-05-01

The Third Texas Cavalry in the Civil War
ASIN: 038097794X |
Book Description
In October 1861, the young men of the Confederacy's newly formed Ninth Texas Cavalry forded the Red River between Texas and what is now eastern Oklahoma. They would remain on active duty throughout the entire Civil War, moving from skirmish with little rest and no furloughs, distinguishing themselves in several major campaigns across the South. Their casualties would be tremendous--three-quarters of the unit would be wounded or killed in battle, die of disease or in Indian attacks, or be mustered out because of physical unfitness for service. And those who survived would not see their Texas homes again for four long years. But despite it all, they remained...
ALL AFIRE TO FIGHT
Drawing on letters, journal entries, family stories, and official war records, Martha Crabb re-creates the remarkable Civil War odyssey of the Ninth Texas Cavalry--a thousand or so fearless, hell-raising western boys who endured unspeakable hardships, yet didn't lose their devil-may-care spirit or raw determination to win. You'll meet teenager Newt Keen, who marched and fought for more than three years, then spent nine hellish months in a Union prison, yet still was "not half whipped"; Tom Berry, respected and honored by all, who perished during the battle of Atlanta with the regret on his lips that he could do no more; dedicated soldier A.W. Sparks who was even more dedicated to his brother, so much so that he stole into a Union hospital in order to stay with his wounded sibling for twenty-four hours; and Sul Ross, a Texan Ranger whose courage and integrity no man could doubt, who became the Ninth's brigadier general later in the war and a Texas legend after it. Through their stories, you'll get to know the human face of warfare--and experience a soldier's-eye-view of the drama, exhilaration, and horror of bloody conflict--made palpable and immediate through evocative descriptions and scrupulous research.
Customer Reviews:
The Ninth Texas Cavalry.......2004-01-21
There's nothing I appreciate more is a historical work where the author has consulted numerous often obscure primary sources in order to construct a never before written history. All Afire to Fight is one such work, and I have to say I have really enjoyed reading this book and learning about the Ninth Texas Cavalry--not to mention the military activities in the theater of the war where they were active, about which I am not that familiar at the moment. I found the narrative to be excellently written for the most part, although there were a few awkward spots. The one real detracting aspect of the book was the lack of a roster. In my opinion, no regimental history should be without one (the more detailed the better!) provided the information is extant.
Not Just For Texans.......2000-05-29
I am a "California Yankee" whose favorite view of Texas has usually been through the rear view mirror - I should not have liked this book. But as a retired military officer, I was enthralled by Martha Crabb's graphic telling of men at war. Her obviously well documented and researched stories about the brutal fighting conditions, starvation, and primitive medical care gave me a real respect for the combatants of the civil war era and just how much some parts of warfare have changed for the better. And her description of broken government promises, bureaucratic obstacles, and the occasional incompetent leader, showed how much has remained the same. This book would make a great movie
All Afire To Fight, The Untold Tale of the Civil War's Ninth.......2000-03-22
Any Texan interested in the state's role during the Civil War, and certainly any Civil War enthusiast will find much to enjoy in Ms. Crabb's detailed account of this little-known aspect of that bloody conflict. She doesn't shy aware from reporting just how terrible a conflict it was, but she humanizes it by following, mile by agonizing mile, the Ninth Texas from its formation, through each of its battles and conflicts, until she brings the survivors home. Her book is meticulously annotated and documented, leaving little doubt as to her sources and her extensive research. Even long-time Civil War buffs are guaranteed many new insights into this unit. Particularly interesting are the reports of daily life of the ordinary boys and young men who made up the Ninth Texas Cavalry, the ordeals they faced just to survive, and the extraordinary courage they showed as they battled Union troops, fatigue, ravenous hunger, and homesickness. Because of the distance back to Texas, most never returned until the conflict ended; hundreds of others were buried throughout the South. Through her book, Martha Crabb once again brings alive the terrible toll exacted by this Civil War, describing battles and wounds until the reader can hear echos of the cannon and the screams of the wounded. It's not a pretty picture she describes, but it's once which every American should face once again.
Glorious war, Hideous war.......2000-02-20
Afraid he might miss GLORIOUS war, Reuben silently escapes from Pa's farm to join the Texas Cavalry. Through four years of the American Civial War Reuben and his fellow soldiers suffer HIDEOUS war without adequate food, clothing, and arms. Often led by fools, they fought heat, cold, measles, dysentery, and Indians, yet they never waver in their courage and dedication. Many of the men of the Ninth Texas Cavalry had lived in Texas only a few months, at most a couple of years - yet Texas Pride permeates the story. Meticulously researched, Ms Crabb has used letters and diaries written by the men of the Ninth to tell the story. All Afire to Fight reads like a modern best selling thriller. It is filled with action, pathos, and undiluted horror as told by the men who did the fighting.
