Book Description
When it opened in 1875, the Kaiserhof hotel was the epitome of modernity. The opulent hotel was one of Berlin's most fashionable resorts, the haunt of aristocrats and rich holidaymakers. In 1930, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels used the Kaiserhof as the Nazi Party headquarters. In 1946, the hotel, like much of bombed-out Berlin, was a hollow ruin. In 1975, on the spot where the grand hotel once stood, the North Korean embassy was erected, an architectural eyesore of appalling vulgarity. Berlin charts dramatically the changing face of one of the twentieth century's most fascinating cities at three crucial periods of its history.
Berlin presents the buildings and structures of historical and architectural interest which have been affected by events of the twentieth century: government buildings and grand hotels, cafes and department stores, theaters and railway stations can be seen from the same angle at three different points in time. Some of the structures have vanished completely; some were restored after the allied bombing of the city during the Second World War; others, such as the Imperial Palace and Hitler's Reich Chancellery, were blown up on ideological grounds; still others today serve a purpose different from their original one: the Nazi Reichsbank is now the home of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the building which once housed the Reich Air Ministry is now the home of the Federal Ministry of Finances. The photographs assembled here are at once spectacular and full of human life, and the city they record over the course of almost one hundred years is a unique document for the student of history and architecture alike. Above all, Berlin is cultural and contemporary history in one-a splendid, informative, and enigmatic book about one the great cities of our time.

The Best Book on Berlin.......2002-07-25
If you must have only one book on Berlin, this is it. Few cities have experienced the massive upheaval that Berlin has, and trying to compare and understand the pre-World War II city with that of today is often a frustrating labyrinth. Mark McGee's book offers clarity. While other books have a similar before/after format, McGee does it with greater clarity, superior images, and with a lively and informative text. I like that individual buildings are given a distinct section, as opposed to being scattered throughout. McGee's text offers plenty of pertinent information, as well as trenchant architectural criticism, and odd asides that are greatly enjoyable (commenting on the Potsdam rail station, McGee notes that the old graveyard in front of the station was paved over after the lease on the last grave expired). Yes, this book is a must for any reader interested in the architecture and urban planning of a unique city. All that is missing is a map highlighting the location of buildings detailed.
An original perspective on history.......2002-01-15
Mark R. McGee has assembled an impressive collection of photographs to demonstrate the changes that have occurred in twentieth-century Berlin. Any student of history will be interested to see the minute details captured in these images. The texts included with each sequence of photographs flesh out the history of this fascinating city.

Evaluating Development Aid: Issues, Problems and Solutions
ASIN: 0521808189 |
Book Description
This book analyzes the institutions--incentives and constraints--that guide the behavior of persons involved in the implementation of aid programs. While traditional performance studies tend to focus almost exclusively on policies and institutions in recipient countries, the authors look at incentives in the entire chain of organizations involved in the delivery of foreign aid, from donor governments and agencies to consultants, experts and other intermediaries. They examine incentives inside donor agencies, the interaction of subcontractors with recipient organizations, incentives inside recipient country institutions, and biases in aid performance monitoring systems.

While traditional performance studies tend to focus almost exclusively on the policies and institutions in recipient countries, this book looks at incentives in the entire chain of organizations involved in the delivery of foreign aid, from donor governments and agencies to consultants, experts and other intermediaries. Four aspects of foreign aid delivery are examined in detail: incentives inside donor agencies, the interaction of subcontractors with recipient organizations, incentives inside recipient country institutions, and biases in aid performance monitoring systems.

A new book by Miriam Nelson, author of Strong Women Stay Young, Strong Women Stay Slim, and Strong Women, Strong Bones, is always cause for celebration. This time, the Tufts University researcher who taught strength training to women of all ages tackles nutrition--especially demystifying the science behind it. What foods improve health and prevent disease? What is the truth behind whether we should or shouldn't eat fat? Sugar? How do we choose among the 40,000 food items sold in the average supermarket? What about the tenets of bestselling diet books (which Nelson points out are usually by authors without nutrition credentials)? Government dietary guidelines? Nelson, with her able cowriter Judy Knipe, explains simply the truth about your dietary needs: water, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, calcium, protein. She lambastes the high-protein fad diet ("it does lead to short-term weight loss, but to the detriment of overall health") and sings the praises of soy. Clear, precise, practical suggestions for eating more nutritious foods will leave you knowing both why and how to eat better. Knipe's 61 innovative recipes include Cornish Hens with Wheatberry Stuffing, Fish and Corn Chowder, Puffed Cornmeal Pancake with Cranberries, and Barley Risotto with Shrimp and Edamame. --Joan Price

Good Nutrition Advice, Tiresome "Perfect" Family.......2002-08-28
I have loved Miriam Nelson's other books, and eagerly anticipated this one that would focus only on nutrition, especially for women. The good news is that she does not disappoint in this area: solid, sensible information, with eating plans that are like those in her other books. LOTS of data, based on research, and split up into great chapters, like "water" and "calcium."
If only she hadn't felt the need to incorporate her and her family into each section. I really got tired of reading about their perfect eating plans and perfect life with a community dairy, nearby farmer's market---and apparently no restriction on spending or time to buy and prepare food! While it's nice to practice what you preach, it is tiresome to readers who have to hear about the perfect eating habits of a family who dotes on tofu and fresh-ground corn for breakfast pancakes several times a week. And don't forget the sunflower seeds in your Sunday morning whole wheat waffles. On and on she drones, at least that is how it seemed to me. I was very disappointed and wondered how her editors let this happen.
I will keep the book for its sound information, but after reading it, I won't be buying more to give as a gift to others, which I did many times with her "Strong Women Stay Slim" book.
good sense and good eating.......2002-07-27
I have read most of the newest diet books on the market, looking for just some good scientific background for what the author recommends. All of them leave me wondering what the author actually knows about nutrition.
Dr. Nelson does nutrition and fitness for a living, and has studied exercise and strength training also. This is the first book I've found that has actual science backing up what is being written. I am so glad to read that margarine is not good for me, and it's OK to use butter sparingly! Also, finally someone is writing about the high protein/low carb diets as being bad.
There are not specific diet plans in this book, because you don't need them. You don't measure every drop of stuff you put in your mouth, you have to rely on your knowledge of the food pyramid and serving sizes, which if you don't already know are not difficult to learn. The recipes might seem exotic to some, and ingredients hard to find, but you have to start expanding your horizons. Health food stores sell whole grains and other foods, most large grocery stores carry tofu and a good assortment of vegetables.
The section on calcium was interesting to me, since I have just started taking calcium supplements. I had heard about there being some supplements that were contaminated with lead, and the author discusses this. Do you want to know what brand of calcium supplement to take? You just have to read page 97, she tells which brand she takes herself.
This is an eating plan I can live with.
Sensible easy-to-read advice on how to eat well.......2002-01-16
Tired of counting calories, making cabbage soup? Tired of eating high-protein, low-fat, no-fat? Are you now so completely confused by what to feed your family that you run screaming from the supermarket? Take a deep breath and read this book! Dr. Nelson answers your questions thoroughly, like are high-protein diets healthy and are carbs bad for you? Complex topics (like the glycemic index) that can really help you are explained fully. An invaluable book!
A good basic nutritional guide.......2001-12-24
Miriam Nelson has prepared an easy to follow, enjoyable nutritional program. I've "tried" some other nutritional programs that seemed overwhelming from the get-go. This one is less daunting. Its nice to know that I don't have to completely cut out alcohol, caffeine and salt to have a healthy diet. Ms. Nelson has convinced me to cut out sodas in favor of mineral water, seltzers and juice. She's got some great tips on protein (particularly soy protein), hydration and vitamins. I'm going to photocopy her table on vitamins and minerals and email it to my cigarette-smoking sister. She's got some great soy recipes and fish recipes too. This is healthy eating I can look forward to. For enjoyability, I rank Ms. Nelson's guide right up their with the Piscatellis' "Don't Eat Your Heart Out".
3 Cheer for Real Foods!!.......2001-08-13
Chock-full of useful information I've been curious about for years! "Experts" are always recommending "whole" grains and getting "enough" of this or that, but Dr. Nelson finally tells us what those words really mean - and how to enjoy eating foods that are both healthy and delicious.
The clarification about how to read the ingredients list to find out if the bread is truly "whole" grain and how to interpret a food label is so appreciated. I am delighted to see how many more options there are for whole grains that I can serve with dinner, and I'm anxious to try the recipes! With a crazy Monday through Friday week, I'll sample the recipes on the weekends and follow the tips for planning ahead for the coming week.
The sample menus provide an easy, practical framework for slowly adopting a more wholesome diet. I am also grateful for the honest opinion about supplements -- the ones I well might need (like vitamin D) as well as the ones I probably don't or that
have yet to be shown safe and effective (isoflavone supplements). Rather than having supplements pushed upon me, this book provides an honest, fair assessment of what my body needs and how to get that from whole foods whenever possible.
From ideal cholesterol and triglyceride levels to good versus bad fat to an appendix second-to-none, I feel empowered to make changes in my diet and enjoy the wholesome, delicious foods I now have "permission" to eat! A million thanks!

This book is a MUST HAVE for your Special Forces collection!.......2006-04-07
I practically own every book on the subject on the Green Berets in Vietnam, and this one is superb by far. Brief histories (pick up Stanton's Green Berets at War for more written history) are provided, but the PICTURES! This book follows the Special forces in Vietnam (mostly Green Berets) chronologically with pictures,I have never seen 98% of the photos in this book published anywhere else ever! Great amount of detail following the SF into Laos, VN A-camps (best pics ever), weapons, 'yards, nungs, SOG (personal favorite), and anything else. I cannot praise Shelby Stanton enough for this book, along with the rest of his wonderful collections.
This book is a great reference that is invaluable to anyone remotely interested in the Special forces. The maps in the back are superb as well, and great overhead pics of base camps including part/full layouts!! No other book on the Green Berets can even touch the sheer magnitude and scale this book covers. A true prize for any collector - Running Recon (Greco) and SOG A Photo History (Plaster) are really the only illustrated books that have as great of a scale. In many respects this book stands alone - If I could give this book a 6/5 I would - actually I would give it an infinite - If you are into the Vietnam Green Berets or really any Special Forces from any era - BUY THIS BOOK NOW NO MATTER THE PRICE!
An outstanding compendium of the SF in Southeast Asia.......1997-01-21
The book is a great photographic representation of the Green Berets in Southeast Asia. From helicopter rides and walks in the jungle to training and living with the natives, its pictures and narratives take the reader through the many missions of the men of Special Forces in Vietnam and the surrounding countries. One can see (and almost feel) the sweat, pain and the joys of those "selected few." The book is presented cronologically making events easy to follow, and it helps relating to the rest of the history of the Vietnam conflict. The book is a must have for those who like to remember and honor those "who were there."

Book Description
An indispensable companion for anyone interested in bird watching, focusing exclusively on birds likely to appear at your feeder. This book offers more information on the feeding habits of North American birds than has ever before been available. Here we find out what species appear in different parts of North America, how often they visit feeders, and which foods they prefer. The fascinating and sometimes peculiar habits of each species are described in anecdotal accounts. We learn, for example, that crows post sentinels to watch for danger while the flock is feeding, that a red-winged blackbird may not sample a novel food until it sees another try it first, and that yellow-bellied sapsuckers enjoy sugar water and jelly. Clear, charming illustrations are a helpful tool for identifying each bird, maps show distribution and frequency of feeder visits, and charts provide information on abundance during specific months of the year. Birds at Your Feeder is based on data collected by Project FeederWatch, an extensive, long-term study sponsored by, among others, the National Audubon Society and the Canadian Nature Federation.
Customer Reviews:
New to birdwatching?? This can help you identify birds at your feeder. .......2006-05-07
I use the book along with my Peterson Field Guide and am able to distinguish birds from each other by what the birds tend to eat, according to Birds At Your Feeder.
Some birds, from far away, even with your binoculars, may be so similar in appearance (size and color), and their visits to your feeders so short, that you can't get a good enough look a them. However, what they eat will help you to identify the birds. For instance, that small gray bird might be a titmouse, a thrush or a vireo. But what did they choose to eat from your feeders? Was it mixed seed, sunflower or suet? I flip through the Peterson Guide to select which birds might meet the size and appearance, and then refer to BAYF for what those birds most commonly eat, using process of elimination to identify the bird.
A gem of research and writing.......2000-11-10
The title doesn't do justice to this book's breadth and depth. "Birds at Your Feeder" consists of ornithologically informed and delightfully written accounts of the feeding habits, behavior, distribution, and abundance of 93 North American species that often visit bird feeders. I bought the book knowing nothing more about it than Dr. Dunn's international prominence as an ornithologist at the Canadian Wildlife Service and a prime developer of Project FeederWatch -- and I wasn't disappointed. She and her co-author based the book solidly on an analysis of the data submitted by thousands of observers since 1987 in the immense network of FeederWatch volunteers across the U.S. and Canada. It seems to me that this important publication has not received the wide attention it deserves. A broad range of readers from professionals in ornithology to people with little more than a casual interest in backyard birds should find it both entertaining and worthwhile.
Attracting More Birds to Your Feeder(s).......2000-03-02
In addition to very interesting and often unique summary information on different species of birds attracted to feeders, the book includes birdfood ratings and maps that are ideal for people who are trying to determine whether the foods, water, etc. that they offer for birds were found to be as attractive by other birdfeeders, and whether particular birds were attracted to feeders in their local rural, suburban, or urban area, or adjoining state. By examining various graphs, they can also tell: how many of each species typically come at one time; how frequently they may come between different periods watched by other birdfeeders; and whether there is any monthly variation in visits between November and April, when most people are feeding birds.
Great Reference Book for Backyard Bird Feeding.......2000-02-09
I found this book to be very helpful, and I refer to it frequently when I see a new species at my feeder. I like the way it lists the seed preferences for each bird. It is a very interesting book and has been very helpful to me in attacting backyard birds!
Independently recommended.......1999-11-23
Here's the complete review from `Library Journal' (15 Sept. 1999), by Henry T. Armistead, Free Library of Philadelphia: "This superb book is distinguished from the dozens of others on attracting birds by its analysis of data from thousands of people who feed birds across North America and participate in Project FeederWatch, a survey begun in 1986 by Dunn and managed by Cornell University and other institutions. For the 93 most widespread feeder species, the authors present several pages of excellent commentary plus two range maps and four bar graphs. For each bird, there is textual and graphic information on its abundance (both geographical and through the yearly calendar), food preferences, behavior, habits, a drawing of the bird, and more. There is also some detail on birds and mammals found less frequently at feeders plus discussions of misconceptions about the perceived risks of feeders: concerns about dependency, disease, predation, and window collisions. A wealth of information is easily accessible here thanks to this massive cooperative program--a prime example of `citizen science'."
