To put it most simply, Andrew Bush's "Bonnettstown" is one of the great photography books of the past several decades. The photographs are haunting and beautiful; it is a book to return to again and again -- indeed, it is the last book I would part with from my collection.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for anybody using industrial organic pigments.......2001-10-16
I am a Color Manager for one of the worlds largest paint companies and even though I have been working with pigments for 15 years I have found W. Herbst & K. Hunger's "Industrial Organic Pigments" to be a great reference book which I wouldn't want to miss anymore.
It contains information on almost all of the currently available organic pigments, including chemical structures, properties and much helpful information to each of them.
It is full of information that one needs to make educated decisions on the use of organic pigments and their suitability for the intended purpose.
It is well worth the comparably high price, as this book will save you hours and hours by providing information that one would have to "hunt-down" from suppliers or other books. Highly recommended.

The History And Important Bits Of Playboy.......2000-01-14
What can you say about this thing? It's Playboy! It's a history of the first forty years of Playboy magazine. I'm not afraid to say that I can be your basic white trash and enjoy this one. It shows the stories, news, sports, cartoons, and the women that Playboy has had between it's covers.
What is neat about the book for me, were two things:
The history of Playboy. For example did you know that January 1958's Playmate Elizabeth Ann Roberts had to get a note from her mother to appear nude in Playboy? Hefner was then charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and from then on demanded that all his model be 18.
The women. Not all Playmates became stars, but a lot were interesting like the above mentioned Playmate. There have been major stars like Betty Page, Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Stone, Pam Anderson, Vanna White, Madonna, Tanya Roberts, et cetera, et cetera, in the magazine as well.
Say all you want, I'm glad this one is on my bookshelf to peruse through.
A perfect book for the playboy magazine lovers.......1998-07-17
Here you have 40 terrific years of playboy magazine's greatest accomplishments summed up in these few hundred pages. If you enjoy looking at all beautiful women from 1954-1994, its here. This book also includes 40 years of American music ,fashion, sports, motion pictures, books, and anything interesting that you have incountered in the last 40 years. Its a must for any Playboy fanatic, and has Mr.Hugh Hefner as a role model .

Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-by-Numbers Is the New Way to Be Smart
ASIN: 0226199991 |
Book Description
How did contemporary microeconomic theory emerge? Who were its chief architects? Conventional wisdom points largely to the work of Alfred Marshall (1842-1924) and his colleagues in England in the late nineteenth century. In this highly original and important contribution to the history of economic thought, Robert Ekelund and Robert Hébert convincingly argue that the intellectual tradition of microeconomic inquiry was initiated by members of the Corps des Ingénieurs des Ponts et Chaussées (French corps of state civil engineers), most notably Jules Dupuit (1804-66). Using documents previously unavailable in English, the authors present a cohesive and original picture of French economic thought that solidly documents the contributions of Dupuit and his colleagues. This is a seminal work about the foundations of modern microeconomics.
"A very fine piece of work that provides material I have never seen before, is well written, and has undoubtable merits."—William Baumol, C.V. Starr Center for Applied Economics, New York University
"By bringing to the forefront the achievements of French engineer Jules Dupuit, this work changes our view of the history of microeconomics. Secret Origin of Modern Microeconomics is a commentary on our discipline's mythology of origins: it reminds us that, in the construction and maintenance of canonical authority, the recoginition of founding fathers requires simultaneous, often subtle, gestures of exclusion."—Philippe Fontaine, école Normale Supèrieure de Cachan
Customer Reviews:
A book for economists and engineers.......2005-09-08
This is a marvelous book on the origins of modern economic thinking and the role of economic thinking in engineering. Apparently the French engineers who developed modern quantitative engineering also developed the origins of contemporary microeconomics economics, to help them understand some very practical problems. The book offers a nice history of the engineering roots of modern economic thought and economic thinking in the field of engineering. In addition to his economic contributions, Dupuit, the major character, made major contributions to hydraulics. The origins of much economic thought in engineering is is not too surprising as both disciplines share a similar objectives. Every engineer interested in economics should read this, as should every economist interested in interdisciplinary work and the origins of economic thinking. However, others are likely to find it boring.
A must for Transportation Economists and Econo-Engineers.......2001-04-05
Ekelund and Hebert have provided an important work not only on the origins of micro-economics, but also the history of transportation economics and the relationship between engineers and economists. Although this text is not an easy read by any means, it provides an essential foundation of transportation economic theory. It also explains how and why micro-economics diverged from classical economics and became a science based in rigorous mathmatical examination of human behavior. As a civil engineer that teaches and studies transportation economics, I find this to be essential reading for transportation economists and policy types. The studies and conclusions of the early econo-engineers on the subject of transportation economics and regulation are as relevant today as they were in 19th century France.
An important book on the origins of modern microeconomics.......2000-03-29
This is a beauty of a book! Erudite, well-researched, with a detailed knowledge of the primary sources, original, and high on economic analysis. This is not a book for the faint-hearted. It requires a good knowledge of economic theory and an interest in the History of Ideas. It also gives a first rate account of the history of the period and the history of institutions in pre- and post-revolutionary France that have created this strange beast: the French engineer whose skills made him attack from a formal and theoretical viewpoint practical problems. It certainly puts modern neoclassical microeconomics in a historical perspective. Sir John Hicks' apt remark that the common thread between Walras and Marshall is that they both read Cournot, is put into new light in this book that focuses on Cournot's less famous contemporary, Arsene Jules Etienne Juvenal Dupuit. Although the origins are less secret than the title implies, this important book brings them to life and shows how many of the problems that we consider modern are more than a 150 years old and indeed predate in their analytical treatment, the 1870s where most courses on the History of Economic Ideas put the origins of modern neoclassical theory. A must for anyone with a serious interest in the subject!

Must have for all staff and board members of nonprofits.......2002-05-19
The book is organized with very straightforward chapters with suggested action steps. The combination of discussion and practical application makes the book the one reference book needed for anyone working with nonprofits.
Excellence in governance can be achived by following this book. Excellence in government results in the most efficient use of staff and financial resources in fullfillment of the mission of a nonprofit.
A Must-Have for Senior Staffs and Volunteer Leaders.......2001-03-25
This is a must-have book for nonprofit senior staffs as well as for volunteer board members who aspire to leadership and stewardship of the organizations they serve. It definitely lives up to the promise of the assertion on the book jacket that the authors, "...who collectively have more than 70 years of experience as chief executives, board members, and facilitators in the training of more than 20,000 board members in 20 countries..."
The book is comprised of 37 short chapters (typically 3-6 pages each) in five sections, designed to address all aspects of board service and board/staff issues. Each chapter provides facts, opinions, tools, and a few "suggested action steps" to help a board address the issue or situation presented in the chapter.
In general, the authors reference John Carver as a good resource for the theory and practice of nonprofit governance, but they don't make Carver the precise and proscriptive recipe that some adherents do. They admit the possibility that other techniques and structures can work well for certain organizations, while "sticking to their guns" in presenting their experiences and insights as having inherent value for most nonprofits.
I was especially impressed by the distinction made between the role of the board and the role of board members. Many policy governance disputes stem from a misunderstanding that, somehow, all board members should have the same responsibilities and be treated interchangeably.
I would have liked to see a clearer treatment of the issue of board diversity; interestingly, the authors seem to agree, admitting that it's a very difficult subject to address. Many board "diversity" programs focus on narrowly-defined "diversity" and run the danger of leading to "tokenism," according to the authors.
The charts and checklists that supplement the text are simple and effective. They're easy for readers to re-create and use in their own organizations.
The book even admits of the possibility that nonprofits can (and sometimes should) dissolve and disband, and provides strategies for helping board, staff, and community understand, accept, and even support the natural cycle of life as it applies to organizations. It's an important message and not a negative one.
Although originally published in December, 1997, it has already had three printings as of August, 1999. With 15 million volunteer board members in the U.S. alone, the publishers could run through many more printings.
Required reading for both new and experienced board members........1998-07-16
Absolutely, without exception, this should be required reading for both new and experienced board members and senior management. Andringa and Engstrom, clearly, are not theoretical "ivory tower" authors. They've been in the trenches with the rest of us--and offer sound, practical counsel. It's a helpful book to give to new board members as part of their board orientation. Certainly every board chair needs one. Well worth the price. Board meetings will get done earlier if you take just 10% of the authors' advice!
A "must read" for anyone serious about non-profit governance.......1998-07-13
Drawing on two lifetimes of experience, Andringa and Engstrom have addressed a broad array of crucial issues. I enjoyed the fact that it was long enough to deal throughly with dozens of key issues and yet moved quickly from topic to topic. I had several, "I wish I'd thought of that" moments when Andringa and Engstrom crystallized a thought I'd been rolling around in the foggy recesses of my mind.
CEO's of Non-Profits should take special note of the practical suggestions in chapters 5, 14, 19, 21 & 26. Board members who are serious about making a contribution will benefit greatly from chapters 1, 4, 5, 7, 16, 22, 28 & 34.
The book reads quickly and can be completed in one sitting but serves best as a reference with short practical responses to frequently asked questions.
Engstrom has produced many excellent works but I hope we will see more from Andringa as well.

good book.......2001-07-20
it's an ok book.but it seems a little old.It has neat things like stilts, tin can telephone, and a slingshot.
charming.......2000-10-28
A really charming book. My father (a new grandfather) loved it and can't wait to try some of the projects with his new grandson.
"violent behavior"?!? -- puh-leeze!.......1998-12-25
Kids are going to make slingshots and arrows on their own, no matter what the PC, New Age types out there think. Better to have Granddad there to supervise and make sure they understand the danger, however slight. This is a neat, useful book -- wish my grandfather had had a copy.
This book promotes violent behavior........1998-12-04
We returned this book after being shocked to see that it's pages were filled with questionable crafts most of which promoted the aggressive and even violent behavior that a really cool grandfather would certainly not want to model. Teaching a grandchild to create for example sling shots, arrows, and other weapons make one a dangerous grandfather not a 'cool' one.
Terrific!.......1998-07-10
Terrific book, filled with simple, practical toys that kids can make (with a little help from grandpa). A perfect book for rainy weekends!

A good overview of the seven battleships that were in the DKM of WWII.......2006-08-06
This book is just a shade short of 190 pages and gives a fair history of Hitler's seven post WWI Battleship; the Lutzow, Admiral Scheer, Graf Spee, Gneisenau, Scharhorst, Bismarch, and Tirpitz.
There are three surprising items in this book. The three pre-dreadnought battleships that Germany is allowed to keep in the post WWI have their fates and uses fully described in this book. Basically, the pre-dreadnoughts were used as training ships or fire support monitors. Second, the book does a great job talking about the debacle in Norway. Third, in nearly all of the losses of the battleships the root cause nearly all goes to the Luftwaffe.
Graf Spee was scuttled. However, because of the poor air observation techniques of the float plan assigned to her, it let British authorities either be warned of the Spee or to track the Spee using float planes launched from the British cruisers. The very good German float planes were more than a match for the RN Walrus reconnaissance aircraft. Why the AR 196 are never used an an anti-reconnasance aircraft role is a problem the German Luftwaffe never solves.
Hitler was warned by Admiral Raeder that the invasion of Norway was a bad idea. At the time of the Norway invasion the German surface fleet had only four battleships and two of those were of the slow "Panzershiffe", the pocket battleships. When the Norway invasion was done Hitler didn't have one battleship in service. All his battleships had either been shelled, bombed, mined, or torpedoed out of action.
Bismarck was indirectly lost through Luftwaffe inaction. A proper German reconnaissance of the by-the-Norway coast was not done. No German aircraft screened the passage of Bismarck and that action would have shot down the lone Spitfire which spotted the ship. Last, both Scharhorst and Gneisenau were damaged by RAF bombings at their port in Brest, France. If the Luftwaffe had screened the Bismarck and she had been met by a force of Gneisenau and Scharhorst then there is almost no chance that Britain would have been able to stop this most fast and powerful battleship squadron. The battle of the Atlantic was lost in early 1941 by the want of just 100 fighter aircraft to screen or protect the battleships.
When both Gneisenau and Scharhorst are used as fast raiders they cut lanes of destruction through the Atlantic ocean. With Bismarck as a heavy base ship then the surface ships of the Atlantic would have stood no chance against this powerful squadron. Yes, the war was that close. Three battleships would have caused the convoys to scatter and become easy prey for the German U-boat wolf packs.
Hitler would have done well to have Goering shot. Indirectly, Goering cost Hitler his whole surface Navy.
After the sinking of Bismarck the rest of the surface fleet were to be sunk in due time. Gneisenau was eventually turned useless by mines, air attacks, and torpedos. She was sunk as a block ship in 1945. Scharhorst was lost to the KGV in 1943. The main reason was the lack of any aircraft screening by the Luftwaffe. Her loss is told in great detail in the book.
Tirpitz, Lutzow, and Scheer are lost in air attacks. The former was given no air support. She was shuttled from Norway harbor to another Norway harbor as kind of a live target for RAF bomber crews. Scheer was crushed in a massive bombing raid. Because her crew was in an air raid bunker Scheer lost the fewest of her crew on any air raid and finished her days as sort of the most lucky ship in the German Navy. Lutzow was sunk by air attacks while in harbor. However, her above the water guns provided needed support to the dying German army in early May of 1945. She was destroyed by her own crew when over 100 rounds of 150mm ammo was exploded in the ship. The first of Hitler's battleships died as the last.
This book is most worthwhile and informative. However, it only has a mild amount of technical data on the German battleships. You will have to reference other books for the information on construction techniques. Also, this book often directly quotes from other books. So, some of the information is a little of a re-hash, this book borrows quite a bit from "The Elusive Sisters, the Gneisenau and Scharhorst" . The result is the retold stories and lack of technical data costs a star.
But, the information on the German high seas command is priceless. The intolerable way that Germany has no Maritime Naval aircraft indirectly costs it the war against Britain.
I highly recommend this most worthwhile book.
Well Done.......2001-08-06
This books offers great information on the actions and events which all of Hitler's battleships were involved in. From the beggining to the end of Hitler's battleships, this book gives you detailed information on each of the battleships and all of their sorties carried out during world war II. My only complaint is the lack of pictures, illustrations, maps, and graphs. But besides that, the book is very good and contains great information.
Great Navy Book!.......2000-05-09
This book was a huge surprise for me. It covers the strenghts of the battleships, their most known operations and even their place in the structure of the Kriegsmarine. For the Navy Fans its a book that you cannot miss and for the others it's also a good and interesting book.Buy it!
