Fascinating book with great info and pictures.......2007-04-01

I bought this book for my son who is almost 5. He is fascinated by bridges. So I got this book for him and he loves it. It has some really unique bridges with great pictures. (He likes it mostly for all of the pictures, but he will ask what country they are from, etc). I also find it interesting because they have detailed descriptions regarding the bridges.

So this is a great book, even if you have never had interest in bridges. Kids like it too!

I wanted to drop you a note to tell you how extraordinarily impressed I am with "Benefit Auctions: A Fresh Formula for Grassroots Fundraising" by Sandy Bradley.

In the past, I've had occasion to run auctions for several non-profit organizations, both church and professional. I did okay winging it, but it wasn't easy. I had a problem collecting donations, getting the auction publicized, and keeping things running smoothly. It worked, but I always felt that it'd be a lot smoother if I knew what I was doing.

Then I read "Benefit Auctions: A Fresh Formula for Grassroots Fundraising." Within the first few chapters, I saw that one of my biggest problems with meeting my expected goals was that I hadn't set my goals correctly. The "times 2" rule explained it all. I also learned how to do much better solicitation of goods and services from donors (and how to find new donors!). The suggestions for how to set up processes also eliminated a major headache for the volunteers and--best of all--showed me how to speed up the payment and checkout procedures, which had been a real bottleneck in the past.

I haven't yet had a chance to try all of these techniques yet, but I am confident that I'm going to be able to double the income through increased donations while spending slightly less effort to publicize and run the auction. On behalf of my customers and my volunteers, thank you!

In this historical and comparative study, Christopher McGrory Klyza explores why land-management policies in mining, forestry, and grazing have followed different paths and explains why public-lands policy in general has remained virtually static over time. According to Klyza, understanding the different philosophies that gave rise to each policy regime is crucial to reforming public-lands policy in the future.

Klyza begins by delineating how prevailing policy philosophies over the course of the last century have shaped each of the three land-use patterns he discusses. In mining, the model was economic liberalism, which mandated privatization of public lands; in forestry, it was technocratic utilitarianism, which called for government ownership and management of land; and in grazing, it was interest-group liberalism, in which private interests determined government policy. Each of these philosophies held sway in the years during which policy for that particular resource was formed, says Klyza, and continues to animate it even today.

Great Platform to Learn About History.......2006-06-19

This is a great book about little known victories that have occurred in mostly unknown conflicts from around the world. The engagements that occurred involving the UK military were especially interesting because I know very little about English military history and the UK military in general. This is also a good read for people looking into just how important the human factor is in combat. In all of these vignettes the outcome of the battle depended less on the tactics involved and more on the human beings who executed the tactics. They all involve men who pushed themselves beyond what they thought they were capable and beyond what their armies thought they were capable of accomplishing. The best thing is that the book leads a reader to want to learn more about the wars surrounding the engagements. Overall this is an interesting and fast read!

Victories against great odds........2004-05-11

The author Bryan Perrett seeks to give the reader ten unlikely victories which were against great odds. Most of these victories are little heralded in modern history (with the possible exception of the commando raid on Normandy) and so present the reader with fresh perspectives on ten little known battles. All of these are land battles, so those interested in naval history will have to look elsewhere. Such battles described included the taking of the Taku Forts, the march into Palestine by the British, the relieving of Lucknow, a Hill fight in Vietnam. All very relevant, but all little known.
All these victories are relevant, but somehow I lost their relevant importance in the great scheme of history. The author tries to impart this in some of the ten stories, but fails in others. I consider this an average read in history. There are other books out there that cover important battles better.

Ten enjoyable accounts of diverse engagements.......2000-09-08

This is a very interesting book, which exceeded my expectations. In a single chapter, the author is able to provide insight into the strategic importance of the each individual battle, then goes into enough detail to put the reader at the scene.

The diversity of the chapters, from a Napoleonic conflict to Rangers at D-Day, is a big plus, and things never bog down. My favorite section was the coverage of the Battles of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane from the War of 1812, a period that I'm not to familiar with.

Reading this book is a breeze, and I'd love to see Perrett release a sequel. Well done...

This is a necessary book if you desire to handfeed wild birds.It is extremely hard to find this book,anywhere.Inside is a step by step guide to handfeeding your backyard birds,it is very useful and in a way, somewhat easy to do by following this book.This was one of the books I have looked most forward too in a long time,and I'm glad I now have it.If handfeeding your wild backyard birds is one of your things to do, I highly recommend this book as almost a necessity.

I recently ordered this book and was inspired to try it for myself. I enjoyed the photography and the author's anecdotes about his own experiences feeding birds. The book offers practical information and put together with a little patience on my part, I was able to get some chickadees into my hand within 2 1/2 weeks.

If you are looking for a book that will teach you how to hand-feed back yard birds and if you would enjoy poignant anecdotes about birds that have come to the author's hand to feed year after year, you will love this book!
The photographs are gorgeous, the text is clear, organized and interesting, and you can't help love the gentle, friendly, kind man who writes about his love of birds and hand-feeding them.
Another good point about this book is ...it works! I followed Hugh Wiberg's suggestions and with patience and practise, won the trust of a dear little nuthatch. He comes to my hand every time I go the park.
The book, Hand-feeding Backyard Birds, started me on this hobby and taught me how to be successful. It is a wonderful book!

Great Present for You or your Favorite Birder!.......2001-11-12

There are some things that make you just stop and stare in amazement. Seeing someone in the middle of a park calmly hand-feeding chickadees is one of those things. Chickadees aren't tame - they fly away from feeders when you approach! And yet, ANYBODY can learn how to hand-feed these and other birds.

If you're interested, definitely grab this book. It has gorgeous photos, and simple, step-by-step instructions. It tells you when to try this for best results, how go to about it, which sorts of birds respond best, how they tend to act, what they like to eat, and much, much more.

Definitely a great gift for any birder, and once your birder (or you!) learns the technique, it'll be a present that lasts them a lifetime!

Fantastic book!.......2001-08-06

This book is a lot of fun - while also being realistic. The author tells you up front that you need to be patient, because it takes time to build the trust of birds. But once they do its such a joy! Reading through the book was inspiring and then in the winter I just bundled up and got out there. It was calming while at the same time exciting as the birds came closer and closer. Bundle up though - the best time to do this with the birds is winter since they're a bit short on food and it gets chilly out there.
