Practical Straw Bale Building
ASIN: 3764371714 |
Book Description
Economical, ecological: designing and building with straw.
Building with straw bales is a technique pioneered a century ago in the state of Nebraska. In recent years there has been a renaissance in the use of straw as a building material largely in the American Southwest, but also in Canada, France, Holland, Germany, Austria and China. Straw is a renewable source with excellent insu lating properties. It is a cheap and easy-touse option for self-builders, and even large-scale structures can be erected using timber framework filled with straw.
This book is a practical, hands-on guide to building with straw. Fire safety, protection against moisture, damp, pests and parasites are treated in detail. Numerous on-site photos document the process of assembly and construction step by step.
30 exemplary international projects illustrate the wide spectrum of design possibilities with straw.
Customer Reviews:
No wolf will blow this straw bale house down.......2007-04-24
There are many books now available on straw bale construction, but this is the best I've seen so far, as it shows how well straw bales can be adapted to modern designs and be used in virtually any setting. Like all Birkhauser books, Building with Straw is impeccably detailed and rich in illustrations, so you will get a very good idea how this form of construction works. Examples range from the Real Goods Solar Living Center in Hopland, California, to a farm and residential building in Franconia, Germany. So, you see that this type of construction can be adapted to almost any climactic condition, even in rainy Lithuania where small straw bale projects have been undertaken.

Book Description
"A masterful and lavishly illustrated landmark surveythe first to cover the history of collage in this much depth."Library Journal
From the seminal moment in 1908 when the young Picasso took a piece of brown card pasted with a "Magasins du Louvre" label and converted it into a new kind of picture, collage has been at the heart of modern art. Indeed, in seeking to transform the discarded scraps and residues of everyday life, the technique found extraordinary new opportunities for subversive rupture, playful artifice, and surreal juxtaposition, together with a completely new conception of the work of art as a material thing. Collage quickly became essential to the idea of the modern, leaving its mark on almost every art movement since, from Dada and Constructivism, via Surrealism, Pop, and Situationism, to the digital techniques of today.
This book, the first comprehensive survey of the technique, explores in full the theoretical implications and political messages behind the work of the past century, explaining how the process was intimately linked to other revolutions in art practice. It covers the many offshoots of collage, including assemblage, montage, photomontage, and décollage. Along the way it outlines a new vision of modern art springing from this most simple and democratic of techniques. 206 illustrations, 91 in color.
Customer Reviews:
Don't get me started!.......2007-09-18
Surrealism, Picasso, Dada, artists response to Nazi expansionism in Europe...well, sure these subjects will involve "a lot of words" to understand!! Geez, collage began way before your local craft store had
several isles of pre-made stuff to "create" one. It is, after all, a
response of artists to the world...and the results are seldom cute or
enjoyable. Sorry, I feel nasty when a book as great as this gets dissed.
If you want, go to the craft store and buy one of the churned-out dull
books which will tell you step by step how to glue buttons and old photos
to something else they will sell you. If you want to understand how and
why artists began tearing things off of walls and using them in art then
read this book. You may be surprised at how moving real art/collage can be.
Very Disappointing.......2007-01-09
I felt this book really didn't live up to the promise of its cover. I expected much more modern, adventurous work. Also way too many words, too many black and white pics and not enough full-colour art for my liking.

Project suggestions come complete with scenario, an overview, topics, and reproducible worksheets, and can be easily adapted for different grade levels. Helpful assessment rubrics are included for projects. Teachers and library media specialists will enjoy this hands-on practical approach to implementing multimedia into their everyday classroom practice.
Customer Reviews:
Finally a book with immediate classroom application........2000-07-18
Students in my Multimedia Design course really appreciate the author's inclusion of materials they can adapt to their classrooms now. Too many times I, myself, have bought books weighted in theory and short on practical applications. Not so this time. Kudos to you for providing straight-forward information and specific examples. One suggestion, though, is an update soon. Some of the material has become dated and students will soon lose interest if instructors must constantly explain how what was said in the book is no longer true.

Book Description
In recent years there has been an enormous amount of research into the way companies raise finance from stock markets. There are many reasons for this interest in 'initial public offerings' (IPOs): DT the capital-raising function of stock markets is particularly important in financing firms and encouraging entrepreneurship and growth DT the late 1990s witnessed an IPO boom in many countries, with unprecedented numbers of companies going public DT two stylized facts appear to be valid in many countries: IPOs are initially systematically underpriced, often by dramatic amounts, and over the longer term they seem to under-perform other companies. The attempt to explain these phenomena has resulted in a burgeoning theoretical literature DT there is a continuing policy debate over the most appropriate institutional arrangements to enable firms to access the stock market in an efficient manner, including the roles of financial intermediaries, institutional investors, and the rules laid down by stock exchanges DT privatizations are a particular type of IPO, and the world-wide trend towards privatization has raised many questions regarding the most appropriate ways to sell companies to the public. "Going Public" is the first book to investigate the issues in a non-technical manner, drawing upon international evidence from private sector companies and privatizations. Building on the success of the first edition, this second edition of "Going Public" has been comprehensively revised and updated throughout.
Customer Reviews:
a good interpretation of the academic literature.......2000-05-12
Financial economists (academics) have an interesting way of interpreting the world. When it comes to IPOs, what practitioners think and do and what the academics "think" that they do are often different.
This book is a solid contribution for those who what the academic IPO literature interpreted for them. It succeeds admirably at what it does, which is to interpret the findings of a lot of published studies in the finance journals that are hard to wade through unless you are a PhD in economics.
I teach finance to MBAs and this book was an excellent review and synthesis for me and fairly accessible to my MBAs. I understand the book has been updated in '99. That is good, since this topic is still in flux.
This is NOT a "how to" go public book. It is a valuable conpendium of how economists think about IPOs.
Good basic textbook on IPO's.......2000-04-03
If you're lookin for an extensive overview of all the basic theories of IPOs, this is a good book. It's like an "IPOs for Dummies". Focus is a bit too much on Underpricing, however. I missed good overviews of Long Term Underperformance and Hot Issue Markets. Quite old (1996) so a lot of important work is not covered. New version was released 1999.

Absolutely awful - typos on every page.......2004-05-17
While the content of this book is just okay - more of a kumbaya "you can do it" kind of thing, I am frustrated that someone can get away with selling a book for $20 that literally has typos on every page. I feel totally ripped off, like I was scammed by someone who didn't even bother to read his book once through to check for errors.
Fantastic.......2004-03-17
Fantastic book on how to sell through the mail, through magazine or newspaper advertisements, or through any type of media for that matter. Glad I read it.
The truth is..........2004-03-16
The truth is that there is no difference between the foundation of running a mail order or internet business. The need for good sales copy, product presentation, and advertising are just as important in both businesses.
By studying how to make money in mail order you will also learn how to make money online, and you will be ahead of most people doing business on the internet who have never learned the basic skills needed to sell in distance selling.
I use the phrase distance selling because in both situations you are selling to people who have never met you for the most part, and do not have a chance to talk to you in person before making their purchasing decisions.
While the theme of this book is mail order its lessons and just as applicable to online selling.
If you don't know what a sales ratio is, or don't have a sales ratio of more than 1%, then you need to get serious and read this book.
Mail order is going strong.......2004-03-12
Now that the hype surrounding the Internet has come back down to earth people are realizing that some of the so called old fashioned businesses are still the best way to make money.
Among these businesses, the mail order business is still a great way to make a solid amount of money. Because mail order requires a low start up cost it has been the preferred way for many people with limited resources to go into business.
Donny Lowy teaches his best selected techniques to help you start up a mail order business and to make money with it.
Proven Mail Order Strategies.......2004-03-09
As soon as you start reading you will instantly realize that Donny Lowy knows his stuff. His advice on starting and running a mail order business is excellent. He shows you in detail how you can launch your mail order campaign without having to spend money, while selling products carried and delivered by others. He shows you how to set up true drop shipping relationships and how to find honest companies that will be willing to work with you in a real drop shipping relationship. This information is appropriate if you have a web site and you want to sell unique products that can be delivered directly to your customers by your suppliers.

From the author of The Call comes an exquisite memoir on the mystical act of parenting. Although Spangler possesses numerous gifts as a writer and spiritual leader (he is a former coleader of Scotland's spiritual community Findhorn), his most meaningful life work has always taken place within the boundaries of marriage and parenthood (he is the father of four children). So it was only fitting that this self-described "freelance mystic" finally shed his wisdom and humor upon this sacred and mundane act. "We may think of mysticism as the dimension of complex issues of theology and spiritual cosmology, but it is really much simpler," explains Spangler. "It is, at heart, about learning how to recognize and work with the connectedness of the world, the wholeness of all things. Love is at its root, and love is equally at the root of what we do as parents. It is in the spirit of this common rootedness that the parent embodies the mystic and mystic the parent."
In sharing his parenting challenges (such as staying present in the presence of a flailing, crying baby or trying to honor a daughter's yearning to become a racehorse jockey), Spangler has packaged a book so tender and profound that parents cannot help but be inspired to bring their highest and most joyful selves to every interaction of parenthood. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
"In this wonderful book...[Spangler] shows how, through the everyday challenges and joys of parenting, of creating and sustaining family, we are given the opportunity to participate in the deeper mystery: the incarnation and emergence of our children's spirits and personalities."-Seattle New Times
Writer, mystic, and father of four, David Spangler understands that the birth of a child is a spiritually significant event-a mystical experience. There is a feeling of magic in the parent/child relationship that relies on intuition, total presence, and impulses that come from the soul. The acclaimed author of The Call shares his stories from the trenches, blessings from the day-in and day-out of child-rearing, and encourages us, with grace, wit and common sense, toward the kind of parenting that brings to the world creative, honest, enlightened, and independent kids.
"[Spangler's] words are full of heart, wisdom, sensitivity, and discernment."-Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational for parents.......1999-02-02
This book is a sweet reminder that being a parent and having a spiritual practice are not mutually exclusive paths. David's warmth and wit are pure inspiration, reminding us of the supremely important work of shaping the future--otherwise known as parenting.
Wish I had read this excellent book when I was a parent!.......1999-01-14
I bought this book at a conference to give to my daughter who is a new parent, and ended up reading it myself. I'm glad I did! It is an excellent book which leads you into surprising depths in a very warm and witty way. I wish I had had the benefit of Spangler's insights and philosophy when my children were all at home, but I found the teachings in this book are every bit as applicable and useful to me now as a person pursuing a spiritual path as they would have been when I was more actively parenting. This book is a wonderful discovery, and I intend to keep my copy for myself and get another for my daughter and now for my son as well, who is single!
Invites us to be mystics in midst of ordinary tasks........1999-01-07
Some books challenge classification. Is this book meant for parents? Most definitely! But it's also for all those seeking to live as mystics in the everyday reality of our lives. And whether one is a parent or not, this wise, delightful, reflective and unpredictable little book offers a perspective which may forever alter the way one thinks of parenting and being a mystic.
While I am not a parent, I AM a doting aunt, bountiful fairy godmother, proud great aunt, and occasionally, a weekend substitiute for my parent friends when they travel. So I too found myself laughing at some of David Spangler's hilarious tales of the adventures of parenting and moved by his vision of the mystical nature of parenting. What he is saying is that one may touch into the heart of God or the Oneness or the Mystery in the very midst of our ordinary moments. And how better to do that than to walk through the days of a parent who chooses to find the sacred amidst diapering, carpooling, comforting and all the daily crises and celebrations that define parenting?
I particularly love it when I am challenged to look at a common reality as in the chapter "Aliens". The author suggests we view children as though they were aliens we were in a "first contact" situation. Would that change our attitudes to ones of respect, listening and co-operation? It reminded me of the sense of privilege I feel when I am invited into a child's world if only for a short while.
And I think my favorite chapter is the one called "Laps". "A lap is a parent's best friend, a tool of transformation that would make any magician green with envy." Laps are places of calm, centering, safety and love - and always potentially available. How would it be to imagine ourselves holding each other, ourselves, the world - even God - on our "laps"? As the author says, "to discover God, make a lap!"
The language throughout is simple, poetic and warm with vivid images and lots of gentle humor. There is an overwhelming sense of compassion for and identification with the struggles of exhausted parents as well as a sheer delight in the unfolding miracles which children are.
So my recommendation: read this book - whether you are a parent or a friend of a parent, or a metaphorical parent to your work, your community, the world. Give this book to your friends who are parents, and your friends who are struggling to be mystics. Keep one on your bedside table. And - make a lap!

Book Description
Michael Keane's in-depth collection of terms dealing with modern strategy and tactics is both impressive and engaging. While other works remain focused on nuclear strategy or the Cold War, the thrust here is on modern terminologysuch things as "axis of evil," "CNN effect," and "military operations other than war." Historical examples supplement the definitions and quotes from leading strategic thinkers provide further insights. While the contents are professional and accurate, the author is not afraid to inject relevant humor and color to make the book enjoyable to read as well as edifying. It is sure to be a welcome reference for defense strategists and concerned citizens alike.
Customer Reviews:
Words Go to War.......2006-01-10
"Battles are won through the ability of men to express concrete ideas in clear and unmistakable language." Michael Keane's book opens with this quote from Brig. Gen. SLA Marshall and the entire work is supplemented with similarly powerful quotes used to highlight important strategic terminology. But does anybody really read a dictionary from cover to cover? Well, this one is an exception. It is so much more than an ordinary lexicon - it combines a dictionary, a book of quotations and an encyclopedia of battles. The author's definitions and descriptions are thorough, informative, and entertaining. This is well worth the time and money if you are interested in military strategy, history or current events.
The author is a strategist who lectures at the Marshall School of Business at USC. He was embedded in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division and also spent a year in Vietnam on a fellowship with the Department of Defense. Words go to war as surely as soldiers do, the author writes in his preface, which is an eloquent statement of the importance of language in conflict.
Up to Date and all the old Standbys.......2005-03-23
Each field soon develops it's own jargon, and strategy/tactics are not exceptions. This book is new enough to include "Department of Homeland Security," and such old terms as "honey trap."
I am particularly impressed with the completeness of bothe the entries themselves and the descriptions of those entries. As an example, his description of revolution in military affairs (RMA) is the most complete, the most understandable that I have ever heard.
Many of the entries have quotations to help define them. For instance under asymmetric warfare there is the quote, "If you're in a fair fight, you didn't plan it properly," Nick Lappos.
Under assault, "When the situation is obscure, attack," Heinz Guderian.
