I was expecting a book about concrete homes. The book showed little on concrete other than the introduction. I wish I could of viewed first or at least return it.

I own this book, and I wish that I had spent my money on something more substantial. The good points- these are beautiful, expensive homes and the photography is excellent. The houses are so exciting that I would have loved information from the builder describing their building issues. Frankly each house had less useful description than a real estate listing would have provided. There isn't a particle of useful information. There are 8-9 pages briefly describe the benefits of building with concrete. These pages are mostly pictures and are sales pitches, not informative.

An American Classic Artist.......2005-10-22
I found this painter sometime in the 1970's where Purdue University gave him a show. Fascinated by his "clown" picture I soon found a large print of his "Parakeet" and not being able to afford the price of that print, I did it anyway.
Vickrey is simply a classic American Artist. A major artist of that century.
Glad he's still living and hoping to see more of his work in a new book.

Aimed primarily at the serious hobbyist or business professional, the Digital Photography Bible functions very well as an introduction to taking, retouching, storing, and publishing digital photographs, as well as choosing equipment and software. Instead of a step-by-step how-to on a particular application--like most of the books in the Bible series--this one is more of a discussion of the many different aspects of digital photography. Some topics--for example, emergent technologies--get only a cursory glance. However, for the most part, the book does a good job of covering everything you need to know to get started.
Launching into digital photography means making a succession of comparisons, and this book has done most of the legwork for you. It examines the different brands of cameras and accessories, as well as the hardware and software you'll need to process the images, from printers to papers. Appendices chart out the comparisons and list 46 pages' worth of digital resources--from Agfa to Zing Network, an online digital-image community offering unlimited free storage.
Author Ken Milburn shares his experience as a photographer, with tips and tricks on how to take a good image, whether it's the basics of high-quality photography or technical insights into working a digital camera--such as compensating for shutter lag or the usually excessive depth of field. He touches on several image-editing applications, but devotes the most time to the basics of using Photoshop.
If you have extensive experience taking and processing conventional photos, but have yet to dive into digital, you'll be able to appreciate how the book weighs all the variables involved. If you've committed yourself already to a particular camera and software, you still will benefit from the help on how to get the most from them. Couldn't ignore technical problems.......2003-01-24
After reading the first 20-30 pages of this book, I found myself
so distracted by all of the typos and technical errors that I
couldn't continue with it. It seems to me that an expert on
digital photography should be able to keep mega_pixels_ and
mega_bytes_ straight. I got tired of mentions of 5MB cameras and
such. There are numerous other examples, but I already returned
the book and can't cite them all from memory.
If you can overlook this, then I have a feeling the other reviews
that say this is good for beginners are on the mark.

...I've been an amateur photographer for 15 years, and my husband bought me a Canon Powershot A40 and this book for my birthday. I'm no stranger to photography, but I'm amazed at the effects I've already been able to achieve with Adobe Elements and the use of this book. I particularly appreciated the chapter on special effects and the one on cataloging and archiving images.

I wish I'd read the reviews before I bought the book. I'd echo the sentiment that I was too advanced for the book. The CD wasn't anything I could use either. It was good in spots, but what I learned was really on a few pages. If you just bought or thinking of buying, your first digital camera and goodies, then buy this book.
If you've been shooting for a while and using Photoshop, you'll learn a little, but wish you'd bought something else--like a lens or something, or a different book.
Beginners BUY THIS

Ok I work with digital cameras, printers and scanners for about 3 years now (professional as well as private life). The concept of digital photography is not new to me and there are few things that I'm unfamiliar with but... There are some settings, details or modes that I would like to try or set but just don't have time. This book will solve those problems. It will take you from basic settings and steps in technique and bump you up. So if all you want to do is print/scan basic proofs or shoot nighttime pictures you will be instructed what to do. But if you want to be more advanced, print better photos, shoot more interesting stuff all you have to do is read on... This book really covers everything; that's probably why it is $40. There are some stuff that you won't need. And if you know basics of photography, parts of the book will bore you but at the end you will have a knowledge that will allow you to improve your digital darkroom techniques. I'm really not looking for camera recommendations since I know what I want. Buyer has to be aware that examples of equipment used for demonstration may be little outdated right now. Same thing goes for camera/scanner recommendations at the end of the book. Digital bible should be used as photo guide not as an equipment recommendation source. Also one thing about the book is that author does not try to find solutions (sometimes). Some problems are solved with minimal intellectual involvement. Example: if there is a problem, tweaking will help (time consuming) but it is recommended that you have to go out and buy a $200 printer profile (much faster/less headache)... I would love to see more of the day to day solutions from peoples personal experiences rather than strictly theoretical solutions (which work fine but cost $). I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
Great Book for Beginners; Terrible Book for the Advanced.......2000-12-13
The Digital Photography Bible is intended for a beginner to low-intermediate digital photographer. The book is very complete - which for some may be the reason you buy it. For me, it was the reason I could not give it five stars.
When I say the book is complete, I mean it covers every topic imaginable. From selecting a digital camera (or scanner or printer) to the right imaging software to how to do basic editing on those programs. This may be what potential buyers of this book are looking for: an all in one manual that gives you a great start and that can later be used for reference. Unfortunately, I mistook the title for being a thorough reference that went beyond the basics. This book may get you to the intermediate level of digital photography but it does not take you one step beyond that. My expectations were for a more detailed look at some advanced techniques in later chapters. In my estimation the book dedicates 80% to the beginning digital photographer and 20% to the intermediate.
Some of the topics covered are:
1) Buying guide for digital camera, scanner, printer, and imaging/editing software. 2) Elementary photo techniques. 3) Pros and cons of using an IBM or MAC platform machine. 4) Basic imaging and editing techniques (primarily in Adobe PhotoShop). 5) BONUS: CD-ROM containing "lite" versions of popular imaging software.
Overall, I rated this book four stars because it is full of information and worth the purchase if you fit in the beginner or low-intermediate category of digital photographers. If you've been using a camera (film or digital) and PhotoShop for at least six months with good results, you don't need this book.

The Nonprofit Handbook: Fund Raising isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum between two covers. Indeed, I am unaware of any other volume which attempts -- and successfully so, I might add -- to map the entire scope of fund raising so thoroughly. A warning, though: It would be a monumental task to read this book in its entirety. Rather, its best use is as a fund raising reference - a one-volume library for articles covering just about any topic fund development professionals are likely to encounter. For example, folks who are involved with an annual fund will want to focus on Part III, entitled "Annual Giving Program." The section contains articles on "Overview of Annual Giving," "Direct Mail," "Benefit Event Fundamentals," "Benefit Event Enhancements," Telemarketing," and "Volunteer-Led Solicitations." To take another example, folks looking for major donors will turn to Part IV, entitled "Major Giving Programs," containing thorough treatments on these topics: "Overview of Major Giving," "The Corporate Support Marketplace," "The Grant-Seeking Process," "Major Gifts from Individuals," "Capital Fund Appeals," "Planned giving: Gift Vehicles," and "Planned Giving: Management and Marketing." One drawback is its price. At $210, it's one of the pricier books in fund raising. However, this is a two-volume set. I've described only the "Fund Raising" volume; there is also Management volume, covering -- again, in encyclopedic fashion -- all aspects of nonprofit management. We'll be reviewing that in the next installment of "We Review." Despite the price of the set, I cannot imagine any well-equipped fund development department not having these volumes available to the staff.

Uninspiring, unless you like this stuff.......2004-08-27
Leave it to the Uber's and Franks of the world to find meaning in this 900-page behemoth that makes the IRS tax code look like a first attempt at a Haiku by a retarded child who has the emotive skills of Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man" while dressed like Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie."
I for one, look to areas other than Real Estate Finance for my vision. But I have read this work, and have endeavored to provide an objective review, so alas I will push on....
Madison's book reminds me of a poem I can't remember, in a song that might never have existed, that I heard in a place I'm not sure I've ever been. However, it is clear that within the realm of finance and art lies the essence of "The Transaction." Madison, in an allegorical throwback to, what I presume is "Aesop's fables," conjures images in the traditional law and economics school that sharply contrasts with the results of his views. But otherwise, it gets its point across, and, heck, even geniuses pay through the nose for unmarketable title every once in while, right? Am I right?
Now I'm not saying that Madison is a "bad man," I assume reasonable people can disagree on the meaning of that term. I am only saying that rather than looking at his glasses with a quizzical expression, he would do well to don them and look out onto his creations.

Truly a fascinating piece of work. It appears Mr. Madison is constrained only by the jealousies of others and the limited vision of his peers. This book changed my life. It will change yours too.
Better than researching title insurance..........2003-09-02
To those who know him, Mike Madison presents the proverbial mystery wrapped within an enigma: fiercly guarded, yet strangely open with regard to his dangerous ideas on antiquated doctrines such as the Rule in Shelley's case.
But it is this sense of "danger" that pervades Madison's entire work. The sense of the fear that his ideas could engender in some people. It is almost as if Madison is thumbing his nose at the powers that be; daring them to challenge him head-on to a Socratic battle between the legal giants of upstate New York, in an epic battle that will leave only one opinion affirmed, whilst the other will taste the bitter order of defeat, with no reargument available.
Madison discusses, in depth, his view on how one should approach a late-season transaction. "Visualize a blank sheet of paper," he preaches, "and draw three perfectly vertical lines equidistant along the page." It is within this triumverate of linearization that the battle takes place; the opposing ideas on the periphery, and the result in the center.
It is the simple elegance of such a system that validates Madison's research; after all, two hunters will catch a fox more quickly by flanking the beast from opposite positions. Who will ultimately acquire possession is the crux of the debate. (See Pierson v. Post). However, Madison teaches that both would be better off by dividing the beast in two, and feasting upon the bloody entrails in a celebration of brotherness, in the great wisdom of Solomon.
In short, Madison has only benefitted mankind with his latest work, and we would all do well to thank him for it.

Madison goes on and on about silly grown men scampering after noxious beasts. Who has legal possesion? Who cares? After the first chapter I started daydreaming about the month I spent in Turkey held captive by a syphillitic transvestite ENT doctor.

The best part of this book is its collection of awesome, authenticated birth (and pre-birth) memories. They support the belief that babies are beings of a very high level of consciousness at the time of birth, to a degree that most people would never suspect. This book belongs on a list about spirituality as much as it belongs on a list about birth. The memories that many people are able to retrieve about their births indicate that tiny infants indeed come into the world "trailing clouds of glory". Their emotions and level of understanding at birth are those of fully evolved spiritual beings, who--one assumes--lose their memories of a former spiritual existence as they mature. Anyone who is truly open to the message of this book will be deeply moved by stories such as the one about the baby in the womb who was worried about his mother because he understood that she was bleeding and near death. After reading this book, you're very likely to want your baby to have as gentle and natural a birth as possible--and you just might be careful what you say in the delivery room!

An excellent book for prospective parents. A must read for Drs, labor and delivery nurses, and doulas. This book gave me insight on my three son's births and how early comments did affect their lives. It also increased my awareness of the importance of making positive comments at the births I attended and creating a loving, welcoming presence for the newborn. It does make a difference!

I picked this little book up at a retail store while in the process of renewing my birding interests from years ago.Some things have changed over the years but it's mostly just new knowledge and expierience renewed from things learned over time.The book can be used as a guide also as it lists about 60 some pages of the common birds you would most likely see at the backyard feeder,it lists identification,feeding, landscaping,and breeding.The first half of the book goes into feeders,set ups for feeding,bird food, and suet,and a color coded range map that is used in the identification section of the book.There is also the necessary section on what to do about squirrels, and some commonly asked questions pertaining to commonly asked things about this pastime or hobby, whichever you prefer.There is a lot of easy to absorb information in this little book,a lot of info is packed into this little book,and if you are restarting you're interest or just starting out in this hobby, this is an excellant way to start.By the way, I got this book at Meijers, a chain store in Michigan.
