Book Description
Cinema 4D 9.5: Real-World 3D Animation Production teaches how to produce commercial-quality 3D animation using Maxon's, powerful and affordable, Cinema 4D. Written for 3D animation professionals, hobbyists, and students, this practical, hands-on book uses real-world projects to teach the entire production process. Beginning with a review of how to model photorealistic objects, the book progresses through creating custom materials, cloth simulation, and character animation, to video game and simulation techniques. The book takes a software-integrated approach to 3D animation production with a focus on Cinema 4D and how to use it in concert with several other applications. This Cinema 4D-centric approach shows how real-world 3D animation production challenges can be met, not only with a great tool, but with a great tool box. Throughout the book, you'll learn a highly efficient workflow for creating 3D character animation with C4D. You'll learn various ways of producing motion graphics by integrating Adobe® Photoshop, and After Effects®, with C4D. You'll explore projects that use BodyPaint to extend your ability to create fantasy and control the realism of how image maps relate to their objects. And you'll use Right Hemisphere Deep Creator 2 and Code Gardener's XPort 1.3 to explore methods for animating video games and simulations. Some experience with 3D animation is assumed, but all levels of users will be challenged to expand their skills.
Customer Reviews:
It depends on your definition of "real world".......2007-03-20
Don't get this hoping to learn high quality character animation, but if you want to learn quick animation where time & budget is first concern then this good book. Contrary to what some have said its not all about 3rd party apps. He does cover modeling, Expresso scripting & dynamics - I believe Expresso comes with the basic CD4 and dynamics comes with the complete CD4. Even though the book is far from complete he does cover subjects no one else has the nerve to touch.
interesting anecdotes.......2006-11-03
The book really should be called "how to cheat with animating C4d by buying lots of expensive addons". The tutorials are interesting, but what is missing is basic animating in C4D with the tools already available. For example, there is no section on animating facial expressions. That is so much used in games and movies that it's omission is curious. Many of the human animations are done with using the BodyStudio plugin to import animations done in Poser. Poser's animation tools are moderately good for things like walking, but lack the sophistication of tools available in C4D. If you like premade animations, his technique is good. There is no mention of the InterPoser plugin which is a stronger way of importing Poser objects in C4D.
Also missing is any section of web based animation: rotating 3D objects in response to user input. But there is a section on modeling with IModeller 3D that really doesn't have anything to do with animation.
This book would be useful to someone who already knows how to animate in C4D but wishes to understand various addins that are useful in importing Poser animations, making games, adding keyed video (like the section on Ultra), etc. So it really a book on how to cheat in C4D and save time by buying other programs.
Excellent learning source.......2006-05-27
This was book was extremely helpful and easy to follow. It was used in class to help my students and they found the animation and dynamics information invaluable. I'm always impressed when someone can successfully communicate difficult technical information.
unleash the legend of creative animation.......2006-04-25
After working with Maya for about 3yrs now I would say this book has opened up another way for me to look at animation. It should be about the creative side to get fantastic results not about computer programming (MEL). C4D helps you get great results in no time and my man Larry has demonstrated that very nicely. Maya is so completed and confusing that you really have to be way experience to get a good enough results. I would highly recommend this book to any beginner who is wants to Learn 3D animation (so those people like me out there get, grab this book and make your first big step into the animation world). Larry Mitchell awesome book, no doubt about it, experience users of Cinema 4D you just have to wait for next book perhaps!!
Cinema 4D 9.5 Excellent! well written, easy to follow........2006-04-25
This book has provided me with a hands on guid that I have search for many years. I am new to animation, and I think Mr. Mitchell did a fantastic job of explaining and making his real world application easy to follow. This book has taught me more about professional animation than any other books in my library. To me the CD is an added bonus. I would highly recommend this book to any beginner who is trying Learn 3D animation production. The only negative thing I have to say is, why it took you so long to publish a book that gave someone like me the confidence in learning 3D animation. I was able to create my first animated characters by using this book, by adding this book to your library, you will be gaining a wealth of knowledge. By the way, when is your next book coming out? Simply, this book is GREAT.

Cinema Treasures: A New Look at Classic Movie Theaters
ASIN: 0471491381 |
Book Description
Cinema Builders outlines the history of the cinema as a quintessentially modern building type, which embodies fantasy and escape in another realm. It examines the relationship of the development of film to the architecture of the cinema itself; the
advent of sound and the replacement of the theatre as an urban attraction. Cinema Builders charts the metamorphosis of cinema architecture from traditional theatre structures to a new breed of cinema building, among the first to use modernistic
architectural languages and abandon historicism.
The buildings featured throughout include work by architects such as Coop Himmelb(l)au, Bryan Avery, Jon Jerde, Fumihko Maki, Behnisch, Behnisch and Partner.
- All-encompassing worldwide study of cinema styles
- Prestigious architects showcase their work
- Beautifully illustrated in colour and black and white throughout

A Japanese form of marbled papers.......2004-10-10
Even the name, 'spilled ink,' has a Japanese sense of self-deprecation about it. Don't be fooled: this simple and elegant art deserves the most serious respect.
Western marbling uses a thickened medium to support the inks. Suminagashi, instead, relies on the fluidity of water's surface to create its delicate drifting marks. It differs from Western marbling also in that it tends towards a limited palette, often being executed with black ink only. The results, however, go far past the Western style in delicacy and complexity. Suminagashi can fill the paper with marks as vivid and dense as marbled paper's. It can also create airy, open patterns as pale as morning mist, the kind that sit well under calligraphy or drawing.
Best of all, suminagashi is simpler in tools, materials, and process than its Western relative. You can try it yourself with only a shallow pan, ink, and a little detergent. Even kids can get good results within their first few tries, and get enough different results to hold their interest.
The basic simplicity of the craft takes nothing away from the masterworks of the craft's finest artisans. There is infinite subtlety in the play of ink and surface. The samples shown here are breathtaking. The book's value, though is in letting you create images of your own.
Go ahead. It's quite an experience seeing the films of ink forming on the water; it's almost magical to capture them on paper for yourself.

The Dogs Who Found Me: What I've Learned from Pets Who Were Left Behind
ASIN: 1565122682 |
Book Description
There's nothing more cherished by Southerners than their dogs. Dogs, and their Southern keepers, know when it's time to eat and when it's time to be quiet. Both know when to move slow and when to bare teeth. In Southern literature, dogs have taken prominent roles as muses and characters, confessors and conspirators. Southerners love their dogs almost as much as their mammas, and Southern Dogs and Their People aims to celebrate that love.
Photographer P.S. Davis has been taking photographs of dogs around her home of Greenville, Alabama, for many years. Her photographs chronicle the lives of dogs and their owners, from the poodles of a rich widow to the mutt of a homeless veteran. As a photographer, Davis is known for her tenderness and steely-eyed wit, her sense of the perfect and the absurd. Editor Roberta Gamble, Davis's friend and neighbor, has brought together a wide-ranging collection of quotations from great Southern writers, including William Faulkner, Lee Smith, Harry Cress, Bailey White, Larry Brown, Clyde Edgerton, Eudora Welty, Zora Neale Hurston, James Dickey, Anne Tyler, James Tate, Flannery O'Connor, Bobbie Ann Mason, and many others. This fond tribute by two dog-loving Southerners is the perfect gift for every dog lover.

Favorite Gift.......2001-08-09
This book is THE most popular I've ever given as a gift. Everyone likes it, people of all ages. Even cat people like it! Everybody has had a favorite dog and this book reminds them of happy times. The price is right, and this little book is welcome for all occasions. Gerry Morgan
Everyone will love this..........2001-06-22
Excellent book!! This is high praise considering I am a cat person. The photographs and the verses are wonderful and fit well together. If you don't at least like this book, you do not have a warm spot in your entire body.
Great gift.......2001-02-07
I love this book, and have given it to several people as a gift. Everyone has enjoyed it and always has their own stories to tell about their favorite dogs. Now if Priscilla and Bobbie would only write a book about favorite cats....!
Great dogs and people, here.......2000-08-21
This is an itty bitty book about a big subject, Southerners and their dogs. It's different from a lot of the other dog books out now, in that it's every bit as much about dog-lovers as dogs. The pictures are great. In one, a little Chihuahua peeks out of a macho guy's shirt front. You can't not love them both. There is humor and dignity and love in these photos. I salute the authors. In addition it's a compliment to the American South, for there are folks of all ages, colors, and economic strata co-existing between this book's covers. A great little book.
Delightful, and witty book that stirs the heart.......2000-07-24
The photography in this book is truly outstanding in capturing the "spirit of the south". The quotations of southern authors merely underscore the feelings evoked by the poignant photos. This book is perfect for canine lovers in every region of the U.S; but especially for those of us whose family members include the 4 legged ones.
Book Description
To study the strategic interaction of individuals, we can use game theory. Despite the long history shared by game theory and political science, many political scientists remain unaware of the exciting game theoretic techniques that have been developed over the years. As a result they use overly simple games to illustrate complex processes. Games, Information, and Politics is written for political scientists who have an interest in game theory but really do not understand how it can be used to improve our understanding of politics. To address this problem, Gates and Humes write for scholars who have little or no training in formal theory and demonstrate how game theoretic analysis can be applied to politics. They apply game theoretic models to three subfields of political science: American politics, comparative politics, and international relations. They demonstrate how game theory can be applied to each of these subfields by drawing from three distinct pieces of research. By drawing on examples from current research projects the authors use real research problems--not hypothetical questions--to develop their discussion of various techniques and to demonstrate how to apply game theoretic models to help answer important political questions. Emphasizing the process of applying game theory, Gates and Humes clear up some common misperceptions about game theory and show how it can be used to improve our understanding of politics.
Games, Information, and Politics is written for scholars interested in understanding how game theory is used to model strategic interactions. It will appeal to sociologists and economists as well as political scientists.
Scott Gates is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Michigan State University. Brian D. Humes is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Like reading a thesis.......2003-06-10
I have to say that I agree completely with the reviewer from Philadelphia. I was so disappointed to find that for me, the book contains no inspiring text or photographs. In my opinion, it reads like a thesis, and the content is repeditive. I found it very difficult to read with references to various reports and articles. The photographs are dark and of amateur quality, and because the book is so small they are even harder to see.
Tiny book with big price.......2002-03-23
I am teaching a course in store design and needed a reference book. I needed a text book with philosophy, more than a picture book. I was SHOCKED when this tiny 61 page book arrived, with 21 pictures. I expected more book for the buck. The book concentrates on planning philosophy for large stores. I was hoping to get more information regarding small, boutique stores. I am sure some of the principals for large store planning will apply, however was very disappointed in overall content and quality of the book. The previous review must have been written by a friend.
This book will change business floorplans.......2001-04-17
It was a real treat to read this retailing text. The real life examples and the down to earth method he uses to describe the actual retailing situations is in my mind unsurpassed. I have to say that while reading this text I was amazed at how quickly time went by. I was immersed in the retail principals from the start. It was most refreshing to have a learning text begin with such a realistic story. The story from the start sets the stage for the whole text. Anyone wishing to learn about why retailer's floor plan their stores the way they do needs to read this text. The information is current and very up to date. I think this text will become one of the best text that retailer's use as a reference tool for store layout.

If you aren't praying for your kids, Who is?.......2000-04-30
Karen Linamen inspires readers to devote time to praying for our children. Reading the book is like talking to an old friend who has discovered the power of prayer and has a passion for her children. She offers practical topics to pray for and provides many life stories of other praying parents. The book includes a workbook/Bible Study which is an excellent way to study scripture regarding prayer. The book has inspired me to teach it to my Sunday School class and to make prayer for my children a priority.
Book Description
The British Light Infantryman of the Seven Years' War was proficient at scouting and skirmishing, and more than a match for the French and their Indian allies. Shooting rapids in canoes, traversing swamps and snowshoeing through endless tracts of forest, British redcoats earned a reputation for resilience and resourcefulness as they adapted to the wilderness conditions of North America. Their development was a watershed in the history of irregular warfare, and this book provides a full examination of their fighting methods, covering training, tactics and campaigning from Canada to the Caribbean.

Rebuttal to So-called Scholar .......2006-06-14
I don't know what planet Mr Swenson (if thats his real name) pretends to be a scholar on, but his partisan and vitriolic review points are so out to lunch, he should be ashamed of himself. Moses Hazen's Rangers were nowhere near Newfoundland in August 1762, their captain having been severely wounded at the 28 April 1760 Battle of Sillery outside Quebec. Hazen was commissioned a lieutenant in the 44th Regiment of Foot shortly afterwards for his gallantry and was no longer commanding a ranger company which was disbanded in the fall of 1760 after the fall of Montreal. The provincial light infantry company that actually fought at Signal Hill in 1762 was of Job Winslow's Massachusett's battalion commanded by Capt. Charles Barron, and their gallant effort is recorded in Steve Noon's excellent color plate of that action. Secondly, the color plate of the Louisbourg landing, 1758, is extremely accurate, as it drawn from actual photographs taken of the landing site adjacent to Kennington Cove about SIX MILES WEST of Louisbourg, a site Mr Swenson has obviously never visited or he wouldn't have put his foot in his mouth. Finally, I'm delighted that Mr Swenson found the attention of detail to Kirk(wood) too detailed, as the aim and objective of all Osprey WARRIOR series books is to do exactly that: viz. show the life of a "warrior" either real or fictional, in this particular case, a real person, Light Infantryman Robert Kirkwood of the 77th Montgomery Highlanders, later of the Royal Highland Regiment. Thanks for letting me set the record straight for more discriminating historians and "real" scholars.
Lt. Colonel Ian McCulloch
colorful and insightful.......2006-04-21
A colorful and insightful look into the men of the British Light Infantry formations created and deployed in North America to deal with the irregular warfare situation created by both teh wilderness and hostile native peoples.
Extremely well illustrated.
British Light Infantryman of the Seven Years War.......2005-12-29
As a historical researcher and scholar I found this book to be very unnecessary and almost useless as to the research presented. It is more of a review of the 'Diary of Robert Kirk' than a dissertation of light infantry formation, tactics and weapontry. As to the colored plates...I have been to Nova Scotia and to Fortress Louibourg and it does not look at all like the plates, even considering time and place. The capture of Signal Hill was accomplished by Capt. Moses Hazen's Company of rangers and Highlanders from the 78th Fraser's HB. It seems that artistic license verses historical truth is the word for these picture plates. As to the information contained within this book, I could do much better at the local library. The rating is actually too high, 1/2 star maybe.
