A great book for Beginners........2003-02-22
I have noticed that the people that have reviewed this book did not give it very good reviews. But I think I know why. Well for one, one of the guys thought it was an art book, when it is obviously an instrutional book.
Before I go any further, I would like to emphasize that this is a BEGINNERS book. If you are looking for advanced techniques on photographing the nude, you may not like this book. As for me, I found it very helpful. As I am a beginner in nude photography.
The author does not go into much detail about each subject, but gives enough information to help out well. Plus, i find that part of the fun of photography is exploring, and we dont want all the fun spelled out for us.
The author goes step by step through the different kinds of nude photography. I have to say that the models are not very attractive, but that is a part of the beauty of photography. We are not looking to make playboy models here. For me, I am into black and white, so I was able to skip through much of the book to the parts where I was interested in. I also prefer real sunlight rather than artifitial light. This was an area of the book that helped me a lot. You are shown different views of models and how the light effects them. Also, the diffence in sunlight and lamp light. And trust me, there is a very big difference.
All and all, this book was a good buy for me. I am glad that I purchased it. I dont plan to read it and follow it as a photography bible, but there are some helpful tips that are nice.
Again, I will say that this book may not be for experienced photographers and is not an art book. But to help all of us amatuers out and to show us what we need to know.

this book is not a book of art to look at, rather it is more of an instructional book, how to photograph nudes. though i don't think that these principles apply just to nudes, you could use them on any portriature. hedgecoe really has the basics down. the problem with the book, why i only gave it a three, is that the examples he uses are not very good pictures. i've never seen any of his other work, so i don't know what kind of photographer he is, but my understanding is that he can create better images that was shown in this book (in fact, many of the pictures look like leftovers from his work done in the late 70s early 80s). also, many of the techniques he describes are ones any photographer should know about, or at least any photographer who isn't just starting out. and a beginning photographer shouldn't try to take on nudes until they have a little experience under their belt. the final problem with the book is hedgecoe's apparent surprise at using computer imaging. it almost feels like he has just discovered the digital camera and photoshop.
it's not a horrible book, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't a beginner.

What a disappointment. This book contains very little that specifically relates to nude photography and nothing about glamor. It's a mediocre photo book. Most of the pics aren't even very good. This book doesn't come close to matching the quality of the author's other books I've seen.

This is one of John Hedgecoe's first books of photography published in 1978. He explores the rich and powerful man's world of luxury and his subsequent possessions which include many beautiful kept and unkept women. Most photographs nude. They are beautiful photos and thought provoking. This book is a pictorial tribute to these men and their precious keepsakes and the life around them. Black and white and color photographs fill the entire book. There is a short forward, but otherwise no written matter throughout the book. Information about the author is on both dustcover flaps. A interesting and lovely book of the human form and luxurious lifestyle.

Pros: Valuable informations and techniques. His approach to nude photography is enriching and motivating. Very soft and almost spiritual use of the naked body.
Cons: The pictures in this book are totally outdated (70's type), grainy and poorly printed. Few models are interesting and I personally don't like John's work. The technical info only refer to film cameras. Needs some serious update.

Probably one of the best books I own. Very informative and detailed. Well illustrated. Teaches you what to look for in a picture. Gives you an idea of what you are trying to capture and how. If you are looking for a "how-to" book, then this is one of the best. Definitely a must have.
The "Pocket" Reference for Photographing the Nude.......2001-12-09
John Hedgecoe has provided many photographers (including me) with uncountable reference books on learning photography for many years. In fact, considering I had his volume on Basic Photography almost 25 years ago, he's a premier contributor to photographic education. "Photographing the Nude" continues his excellent and very in-depth style of covering a subject. As an idea and posing guide alone it's well worth the (very affordable) price. The only small criticism is that he has pulled the images from those same 25 years I've been following him. Some are dated and have the stale, British "Page Three" look. Easy to overlook considering the value elsewhere!

Deceptive title but contrasts Austrians within Marginalists.......2005-01-16
The title of this book gives you the impression that this is a study of "Neoclassical Microeconomic Theory" -that it is not. What the book is is actually something better than that.
This book is a comprehensive analysis between the Austrian economic movement within the context of the Marginalist movement within the late 19th century. The book compares the Austrians against each other, for example comparing Menger to Bohm-Bawerk, Schumpeter and Wieser, and seeing the differences between their thought. It also goes a step further by comparing the convergence and disagreements that the Austrians doctrines have with other Neoclassical 'Marginalist' authors such as Jevons, Marshall and Walras. It also uses the mathematical models of Von Neumann and Morgenstern as well as Joan Robinson to compare to all of this.
The book also goes into the second generation of Austrian economists like Mises, Hayek, and Kirzner for more comparison and analysis.
The most amazing thing about this book is the author's ability to link as well as compare and contrast so many different economic doctrines and put it in the context of the entire discipline. The author doesn't reach any really earth shattering conclusions but his analysis is as entertaining as it is informative.
The one important conclusion that the author makes is that the Austrians had important contributions to Marginalist/Neoclassical thought, but that ultimately the Neoclassical and Austrian disciplines went their different ways even before Von Neumann and Morgenstern's work. Marginalism was the only historical convergence point of Neoclassical and Austrian economics.

Beyond the great examples and readable style, this book practically condenses information taught in statistical and data analysis courses ... and presents it in an extremely useful and readable way. So practical! This is a must read for people serious about improving their direct mail program. I am constantly getting mail and wondering "what were they thinking when they put this together?" This book will help you avoid some of those pitfalls.

Needs more than 5 stars. Classic, heartbreaking & hilarious!.......2004-02-01
I first read WUTHERING HEIGHTS as an assignment in 10th grade English class and was struck by how emotionally twisted the characters were. I also wondered if I was reading the book the right way, because I found a lot of the story very funny.
So I decided to pick it up again recently and realized what a timeless, brilliant book WUTHERING HEIGHTS really is. It's as emotional and labyrinthine as any soap opera -- but so much more worthwhile. These are some of the most strongly-drawn characters in literature, and they will pull you right into the story with their caprices, turnabouts, fripperies, and cruelty.
First-time readers may find the beginning a bit slow, but please don't be discouraged by that. A really wild, romantic -- and, yes, after all these years, still pretty hilarious -- story awaits you. This is a book that can move you to tears and make you laugh out loud.
First-time readers may also have trouble keeping track of the two Catherines and who's married to/in love with whom. Even while rereading it, I had to remind myself who was who, who's the child of whom, who's the mortal enemy of whom -- but it is absolutely worth it. So many people go on about how romantic this book is, and it certainly is, but let's not overlook the sheer drama and insanity of this book.
This book is more about obsession than pure romantic love. There, I've said it. This book will make you glad that your life is not like this. But any time you need a shot of histrionic behavior and violent obsession, Heathcliff and Cathy are waiting for you at WUTHERING HEIGHTS.
One of the best English novels ever written..........2004-01-11
At first, I griped and complained about having to read this book. My aunt practically shoved it into my hands and told me that I was to read this book and like it! Well, I read it, and I don't like it at all...I absolutely LOVE it! I'm really into romance and this one hits home.
Emily Bronte died one year before its publication in 1847 and is perhaps one of the most powerfully written books in the English language. I was first 13 when I read this book and it took me three more times for me to understand what the heck Joseph was saying! .... learned in this type of speech, it's really an understanding book.
Just the undying love between Heathcliff and Catherine alone is enough to put anyone in tears. And how Heathcliff is so masculine, yet so insecure and rude. How did Emily Bronte come up with this passion and this knowlegde, when she seldom left her house? You can't help but fall into sync with one or more of the characters. Tragically, yet beautifully written.
This book is truly a classic, you'll never want to put it down! Get it!!!
The Editor Speaks.......2002-03-01
As the editor of this volume, I wanted to point out its differences from many other editions of Wuthering Heights. This one contains the short story, "The Bridegroom of Barna," believed to be the most influential source for the novel. It also collects essays about Emily Bronte that are not published elsewhere with the novel. I may be biased, but I think this is a great edition of the novel and is particularly good for college classes on the book.

This small book is basicly a good glance at the US army of WWII. Covers basic tables of organization and equipment as well as a basic look at equipment.

A good read but lacking data.......2006-04-26
I quite enjoyed reading this publication; I found it to be informative and well thought out. But the text is very light on hard statistical data, relying more on broad generalisations through creative descriptions with little in the way of hard statistical data. If you are looking to read about the American army in World War II this is the book for you, but if your looking for a book with facts and figures such as notes on equipment, weapons, vehicles, etc - then this is not the book for you.
Forty needs the TM.......2002-07-08
I greatly enjoyed Forty's work on the Japanese and was quite disapointed with this one. It would appear that Forty merely re-worded the U.S. Army Technical Manual on the Japanese Army and did not have such a source for the US Army. Coverage is pretty good on weapons. Fair on organization. Laughable on tactics. He fails to point out the major flaws with the US effort...shipping- limited organization, faulty tank doctrine, failure to effeciently use the negro portion of the population. This book at least puts a lot of information in one volume, but is not as good as his work with more easily found source material.

This book is very nice and has a lot of information to ffer t its reader. I recommend this book to everyone who is intrested in the us army, and wants more information on the history and delvopment of this powerful army.
