Chicago In and Around the Loop : Walking Tours of Architecture and History
ASIN: 0226740625 |
Book Description
Here is the thoroughly revised and updated edition of the leading
pocket guide to the greatest urban architecture in the United States.
Since its first appearance in 1965, this book has been the standard
guide to Chicago's best buildings. This new edition covers more than
a decade of extraordinary new architecture—and takes a fresh look
back at the city's classical legacy of Adler, Sullivan, Burnham, Root,
Wright, and Mies van der Rohe.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but get the new edition.......2004-06-08
This is the best general architectural guide to Chicago and the suburbs, but get the new Fifth Edition ISBN: 0226740668. It's much more up-to-date and the maps are easier to use.
A Must-Have, Quick Reference.......2001-10-02
This is one of my favorite mini-books on Chicago architecture. It is perfect if you are in need of a comprehensive guide with short entries to shape your exploration of the city. Unlike, say, the AIA Guide, photographs are provided for every entry. Photos are small but nowhere near as tiny as the AIA thumbnails. While the entries are brief, they cover most of the important highlights. I am anxious for a new edition, as many of the descrpitions (and their accompanying photos) are in need of updating in order to cover recent restoration efforts and newer major buildings as well.
Great Book.......2000-05-17
I love this book. It is fairly recent overview of the famous buildings in the Chicago area. It covers downtown, the city, and the suburbs. It also has some good buildings featured from the Sears Tower to the Amritech Building at Hoffmann Estates. Though the photos are in black and white, and the entries are a little short, this is a definate buy if you are interested in Urban Architecture or Chicago.
Book Description
One of the premier architectural cities of the United States—if not the world—Chicago boasts a breathtaking skyline, dozens of architectural monuments, and a historic legacy few other cities can equal. And it's still growing! Since its first appearance in 1965, Chicago's Famous Buildings has been the standard and bestselling guide to the city's architectural riches. Now thoroughly revised and updated, this fifth edition will remain the leading pocket guide to some of the world's greatest urban architecture.
Chicago's Famous Buildings, fifth edition, completely updated and revised by Franz Schulze and Kevin Harrington, covers more than a decade of extraordinary new architecture and takes a fresh look back at the city's classical legacy of Adler, Sullivan, Burnham, Root, Wright, and Mies van der Rohe. The authors have added many new descriptions and images of the most important projects in Chicago since the fourth edition, including the massive reconstruction of Grant Park around Frank Gehry's Music Pavilion, and they cover as well the current status of older buildings—some destroyed, others, such as Burnham's Reliance Building, marvelously restored and brought back to life. Chicago's Famous Buildings, fifth edition, also includes expanded sections on the city's future and the development of its diverse neighborhoods, presented with new maps to serve as an even more effective walking guide. A glossary of architectural terms, an extensive index, and more than sixty new photographs of both old and new buildings bring this guide completely up-to-date.
Authoritative, informative, and easier to use than ever before, this fifth edition of Chicago's Famous Buildings will serve tourists and residents alike as the leading architectural guide to the treasures of this marvelous city.

Attractive and concise guide to Chicago's architecture.......2005-08-20
This trade-sized paperback published by the University of Chicago provides concise facts and black-and-white photos of Chicago's major architectural achievements, from skyscrapers to city neighborhoods and beyond, to the suburbs. There are helpful maps at the beginning, with numbers for each building described in the following pages. It is an easy to carry size, and features an attractive typeface. The one update this book now needs is the addition of photos for the now mostly-completed Millennium Park.
Designed to Be Portable.......2004-08-13
If you are thinking about ordering this book, think about why you want it. It is a small paperback book with only black and white photos, not a coffee table book. It is intended to be carried around the city with you while you look at the buildings. With that said, it contains photos and descriptions of 167 buildings and additional information such as a glossary and a list of buildings that have been destroyed since they appeared in previous editions.

Thorough history of Windy City Architecture.......2004-05-21
It's a thorough pictorial history broken up first by era and then by location of the Windy City's skyscrapers. Unfortunately the book's age keeps more than 20 years of recent architectural changes to the city's skyline out of the text. For someone looking for the architecture of the 1980s onward, this edition is not the one to go for. If however, one is looking for a solid resource for older architecture, this book will compliment newer books nicely.

This is NOT Fashion Shots!.......2007-04-25
I was looking for the book "Fashion Shots" so I entered it in the "Books" section of Amazon.com & this is the result I came up with. There is a photo of the book "Fashion Shots," but the heading to the side of the image is "New Product Shots." The information on Amazon.com is about a book called "Fashion Shots" & the reviews are about a book called "Fashion Shots." I thought this was odd but that it must be the same book. I ordered the book & received a book called "New Product Shots" instead - a completely different (but good) book that I already own. I don't know why Amazon.com has false information about this book but I would suggest ordering elsewhere. I'm deeply disappointed! I've been looking for "Fashion Shots" for years & once again am left empty handed.

Book Description
This book examines the U.S. pulp and paper industry between 1900 and 1940, the period when pulp and paper production relocated from the North to the South and the West. This relocation was one of the most influential shifts in industrial production in the 20th century, ranking second in extent of out-migration only to the exit of the cotton textile industry in roughly the same period. This study focuses on the reason for the shift, with an emphasis on the interrelationships among firm location, industrial structure, vertical integration, and firm survival and growth. The work opens with an introductory summary of the economic background of the industry during the period and, then, provides a more detailed description of economic trends in pulp and paper production from 1900 to 1940. Chapter 3 analyzes the relocation of pulp and paper production to the South and the Pacific Coast. Chapter 4 discusses the structure of the industry in light of modern industrial organization theory. The vertical integration of pulp and paper production is covered in chapters 5 and 6, and chapter 7 analyzes mill survival and growth. The final chapter reviews the study's major findings. The book will be of interest to economic historians, industrial economists, and students of economic geography, development economics, and regional economics.

Book Description
A Nation of Shopkeepers reflects some of the most exciting research on retail history and cultures of consumption. The contributors challenge existing ideas about retail development showing how, for example, large-scale retailers played a far lesser role in the development of the modern city than is generally thought, and how the success of department stores was determined less by 'entrepreneurial' spirit and more by the unforeseen consequences of legislation.

Book Description
Living our lives in well-heated homes, cars, and offices, we rarely view hypothermia or frostbite as anything that will happen to us. Yet, as Hal Weiss explains, something as simple as becoming stranded on a winter commute, or getting wet and cold at a football game can lead to problems. In this simple, well-organized book, Weiss guides readers through the basics of how the body loses heat; how to determine the best clothing combinations for any activity; and how to prepare for and survive a cold-weather emergency. Winter outdoor enthusiasts will find tips on how to camp in winter along with basic plans for types of snow caves and shelters. Additional sections cover hypothermia prevention and treatment; treatment for frostbite; and tips for stocking your home and car with an emergency kit.
Customer Reviews:
I'm going to have to agree with Frank J. Oslick .......2007-02-04
The book is much more than "thickness = warmth" It provides very good advice on several ways to create that thickness when none exists, as well as giving expert guidence on the make-up and effectiveness of different fabrics and materials as insulators.
For as inexpensive as the reference is, I say its a good buy.
Clear, accurate wisdom........2005-11-18
There is much more in this book than just "thickness equals warmth". The info on vapor barriers, moisture condensation in fabrics, body heat reflection, and heat loss through breathing are all excellent. Much of this information is not widely available, and in fact is considered "wrong" by a large group of outdoor "experts". Buy the book, try the recommendations, and become one of the few true cold weather experts yourself.
OK book, but not worth buying.......2001-02-22
This is an OK book, but not worth buying. The book is too repetitive, and could be shortened to a few pages. The basic idea of the book is: warmth = thickness. Most insulation insulates because of the dead air space it traps (not because of what the insulation is made of), so the idea of staying warm is to just have enough dead air space. So, the "Secret of Warmth" is to just use something to make dead air space and seal it up good so the wind won't blow in and the air won't leak out. And don't get it wet. There, you've read the book.
"Secrets of Warmth" a hot little number!.......2000-06-16
This book is easy to read, and it's easy to apply the basic secrets for staying warm. After 34 years of chilly Canadian winters, I've FINALLY found a way to have warm fingers and toes all the time.

This extremely readable and graphically bold book is a real gem. Science writer and editor Wayne Grady has written a natural-history book minus the scientific jargon, without losing any scientific clout. His sources include works and interviews with vulture and condor scientists, journals from New World explorers, and early-American and contemporary naturalists. Beautiful photos of the world's various vultures provide stunning illustration to the personality of this special species; one photo shows a vulture dining on a dead water buffalo, its head buried deep in the eye socket! The book focuses most of its attention on the vulture species itself, describing the history of its maligned reputation, its evolution as a species, and its adaptation in the wake of habitat destruction. Such a discussion creates a sense of loss, but also simultaneous hope that this species may recover with some help from humans--proof offered via the condor recovery programs discussed in the final chapter. Grady clearly loves these underdogs of the avian world, and while discussing their "utility" in nature and place on the food chain, he makes the claim that we humans should remember the vultures not because they are "useful or beneficial" to us or other species, but simply because "[the vulture] exists." Some parts of Vulture do require a strong stomach, such as the descriptions of feeding habits and the photos that illustrate them, but the gross-out is part of the fun of this unique book. It is gorgeously designed and presented with humor and candor, all making for an enjoyable and compelling read and reference for bird and nature lovers alike. --Gilia Angell
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous photo book - but no work of reference.......2001-07-24
Why judge a book by the standards of something it is evidently not? 'Vulture' is the most gorgeous collection of photos of these birds that I know. The book itself is beautifully laid out and designed. This is an ode to vultures rather than a comprehensive work of reference about them, and although it is regrettable that there are some errors in the text, they are few in number and are compensated by Grady's obvious love for his subject and his writing skills. But buy this book for what it is: a celebration of the beauty of a much-misunderstood group of birds.
Questionable at best.......2000-10-07
As long as it sticks to New World vultures, this is a good reference. When it comes to Old World vultures, though, this guy simply doesn't know what he's writing about. He claims, for example, that the Bearded Vulture is incapable of carrying tortoises aloft (which it does regularly), and that the Asian Black Vulture is the largest vulture in Africa (it is the second smallest, out of nine species). I find it disturbing (if not surprising) that the Sierra Club would fund such a poorly researched and blatantly inaccurate volume. Anyone looking for an excellent reference on Old World vultures should check out The Vultures of Africa, by the South African Vulture Study Group.
an exellent Book of vultures and Condors.......1999-08-25
I learned much about my favorite bird-of-prey. Giving information about Of both types of vulture (Genus Accitciprid and Cathardiae). Many people have discouraged vultures, not knowing that there smaller cousins had the same habit. Mr. Grady gives plenty of detail for these large scaengers of the air.

In spite of the many shortcomings of the book I enjoyed it........1999-01-11
I'm disappointed in the recently published book "Vulture: Nature's Ghastly Gourmets," and must say that I'm even more disappointed that the Sierra Club Books was associated with the books publication in the USA. The format of the book is wasteful although it might be a book designers delight; but regardless of the attempt to disguise a magaszine length article as a book, it fails and demeans an interesting and worthy and important subject by essentially making the book a miniature "coffee table" book (although its weight might fully qualify it as such). The design would perhaps be more appropriate for a magazinw article than a serious book about vultures. The paper and the binding of the book is heavy and cumbersome in the hand and makes it hard to thumb through the book to find things easily. The book contains 33 color pictures of many of the Old and New Worlds vultures with additional 14 line drawings, maps and other illustrations. These illustrations are good and appropriate (where the figure of 60 dramatic illustrations came from that's mentioned in one of the reviews, I don't know). However, the illustration on page 36 is of a turkey vulture, rather than the black vulture the picture caption indicates. A fifteen kilogram lappet-faced vulture, on page 25, would not be a 10 pound vulture but rather a 33 pound one.
With the wealth of material available, both from the scientific literature and anecdotal observations, Grady could have woven together a most needed and welcome natural history of both the New and the Old World vultures. However, that's not the case with "Vulture: Nature's Ghastly Gourmet." Instead we get short glimses of some of the vultures, through mostly second hand descriptions of a few words or few lines. The book lacks an in-dephth look at these much maligned and misunderstood birds, which are some of the greatest flyers the worlds has ever known. Occasionally, when the author is most successful in his presentation, he uses personal observations and descriptions as of the vultures near his home in eastern Ontario.
Farley Mowat is not the only or the first human who has wanted to return to his next incarnation as a vulture; it was also the dream of Edward Abbey, the iconoclast and writer of the Southwest.
In spite of many shortcomings of "Vulture: Nature's Ghastly Gormet" I enjoyed reading the book and, becoming again acquainted with the marvelous sailplanes of the birdworld. And I recommend the book.
