Book Description
Numerous tendencies in landscape architecture, science and theory have driven research and landscape transformation for over thirty years. Approaches as different as Ecological Aesthetics, Art in Nature, Ecoart and Reclamation Art are united by a search for dialogue with natural processes. This book describes the diverse aspects of ecological aesthetics from the point of view of artists, landscape architects, scientists, philosophers and politicians. A special place among the work presented, by over fifty international artists and landscape architects, takes the landscape art of Herman Prigann, who also initiated this survey. Amongst the 17 authors are Jacques Leenhardt (F), Massimo Venturi Ferriolo (I), Udo Weilacher (D), Malcom Miles (GB), Tim Collins (USA). The book is co-produced with MD Berlin and sponsored by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt.

30 years of ecological art with great essays & illustrations.......2005-05-02
Landscapes leave their imprint on human beings. It's the basic intention of this book to make the reader understand landscape as a phenomenon situated between the two (seemingly) opposite poles of nature and culture and, to make us experience the necessity for a sustainable ecological preservation and development of nature through the intervention of art. This is evidenced by a multitude of examples with great illustrations, easy to grasp in the first chapters of the book and becoming increasingly complex and diverse thereafter, particularly in the last part which deals with integrative landscape art. As important and meaningful as the illustrations are the essays compiled in this book. In many respects they provide the fundament for understanding the various images and provide access to the ideas of ecological aesthetics. Although the book may primarily be directed towards artists, art and cultural scientists it is eventually a stimulus for reflexion and an aesthetic joy also for people who, like me, are not active in the art business.

a helpful book for art teachers.......2005-11-08
The book that I have chosen to review is Encouraging Creativity in Art Lessons. I chose to read this book because it focuses on art and discussed ways to be creative in teaching art in an elementary and middle school setting. George Szekely, the author of Encouraging Creativity in Art Lessons, began teaching art to children in 1971 and later wrote this book in 1988. He attended a high school geared towards the arts, continued to study at The Cooper Union, New York University, received his masters degree at Pratt Institute, and his Ph.D. from Columbia. Szekely wrote this book after teaching for many years and studying how his students as well as his own children viewed art. He developed his own teaching philosophy which catered to the encouragement of creativity in youths. Szekely attempted to teach children how to be artists. He states his goal as "to demystify art, and assure children through the teacher's deeds and words, tat art is found in familiar places and ordinary environments, accessible to everyone...bring children closer to art-nearer to themselves." Szekely wrote his book to help spread these ideas among art teachers. Rather than create an environment where a select few talented students shine, Szekely's book suggests ways to create a level playing field between the students and teacher and make art a tangible object in each student's life.
The major ideas discussed by Szekely center around breaking away from the traditional teaching of art. Szekely's suggestions for techniques in teaching children art include encouraging children to "be" artists which is a difficult task in the public school system. Szekely believes "that all children are artists, born with the natural ability to observe, to formulate art ideas, and to execute works of art on their own...As children grow up, however, they come to depend on adults to direct their art making. " The art classroom is a place where students execute the ideas and plans of the teacher. The students' natural ability to express themselves through art is hindered by the lesson plans they are assigned. Art becomes an assignment in the classroom, rather than an expression. Szekely states, "The first step in teaching children to make art it to be concerned that they regain their independence. " In the art classroom, students need to forget the formal structure of education and become in tune with their emotions and senses, and then they can begin to learn what it is to be an artist.
While his main idea focuses on teaching children how to be artists, Szekely offers key suggestions coupled with achieving this goal. Throughout the book, Szekely also describes numerous techniques to help children develop and execute creative projects. He stresses the importance of encouraging students to constantly think about their art. Szekely stresses the importance of what he calls an "environment favorable to artistic learning. " The physical environment must inspire youths it should "challenge children to make art. " The environment doesn't specifically refer to the objects in the room, but also the music, the lighting, and the interactions in the room. Another important idea which Szekely discusses is how to go about planning a lesson. Again, this relates back to teaching the child how to be an artist. Szekely discusses how a lesson should not be planned around mastering a technique, like they traditionally are, but centered on an idea.
Encouraging Creativity in Art Lessons would be of interest to many art teachers who teach young children. The book suggests many ways in which an art teacher can cultivate and extract creativity from each student, rather than only those who already have a prior interest in art. The techniques presented are fun and intended to stretch the boundaries on one's mind.
The child as artist.......2000-04-20
George Szekely has written an inspiring book which looks first to the learner, then to the habits of practicing artists in order to create pedagogical practice. Personal creative processes often have little resemblance to current art education curriculum and practice, often resulting in unmotivated, disconnected students and mediocre "products". Szekely's delight in the unschooled personal art work of small children and in the quirks and habits of creative people is evident and is at the core of his teaching. This is an accessable and inspiring book with a philosophy that has energized my teaching for a decade.

very good job.......2005-09-16
After reading the entire series i have to say i really enjoyed this series. my favorite part was waiting for delwin moonbeam a hippy "crazy" with psycadelic armour showing up doing anything and everything that noone in there right mind would do. i still fall on the floor laughing when i picture him standing down a 10 foot tall wolf headed demon with an invisible light saber with voiced sound effects. or drawing peace signs with a laser scapel on a glitterboy (for those who dont know what that is think a 15 foot tall super mega tank that can destroy just about anything in one hit) i realize that the editing job was very bad but after the first few chapters you just overlook it and keep going. i recommend this series to just about everyone into role playing games. if you dont like it then you need to find a sense of humor.
Good Book.......2005-08-10
For all those Rifts fans out there, this book is the first of a series that lets you delve into the theme of one of your favorite RPGs.
Although the book definately needed to hit a second editer (the Author should definately look into getting a spellcheck program on his computer) But spelling errors aside, I enjoyed this book so much that I went out and ordered the day one once I finished it.
The book has a broad cast of colorful characters that insure that there is a favorite character for any reader. Delving into the rifts mindset, roleplayers may find new idea's and more understanding of how the rifts themed world works.
Worst Book I Ever Read.......2002-08-20
It seems that everyone who reviews this book says to "forget the editing". Well, you CAN'T forget the editing, because it is so glaringly atrocious. Sentences chopped up, paragraphs cut in two, random (and not so random) misspellings, every instance of the word "crazy" capitalized. It was a chore to read, and if I hadn't been interested in the Rifts setting to begin with I'd have thrown it away after reading the first chapter.
My other complaint was with the writing itself. There is a very large cast of charecters with little to distinguish them from each other. Even their names are unmemorable: Mike, Dave, Dan, etc. I had to make up a "dramatis personae" list just to keep track of who was who. And please... military officers on first name basis with their troops?
The only redeeming feature of the book was that it did have some interesting descriptions of life in the Coalition States and the world of the Rifts role-playing game. But I've read much better gaming fiction for free on the internet. Sorry... two thumbs down.
Still An Excellent Book.......2002-05-26
As any Rifts fan will tell you this book is a must have. What I would like to say is dont let the editng fool you. Once you have pushed your way through this title and on to the next in the series, you will be glad you did. The editing mistakes that are apparent in this title was due to a computer snafu at the printers (so it is said) and much editing was lost when this book went to print.
I still say this was an excellent book. The characters are true to the Rifts world and will bring new ideas to your game. read this and the other two in the series and you will not be disappointed.
Boom almost bust.......2002-03-26
Adam Chilson's first novel, Sonic Boom, is a must-have for all Rifts fans. Unfortunately, it's also a must-have for all copy editors, as it's what NOT to do when editing a book.
I had to deduct a whole two stars for the horrible and sloppy editing of the book, with all the spelling errors, fractured sentences, and misplaced words.
On the plus side, anyone who loves Rifts will enjoy the look into the Coalition States and the translation of the rules into a readable story.
The book also boosts a promising start into an exciting series and with many excellent and varied characters.

Book Description
Dr. Bloomfield has written this book in order to counter the typical trauma and disaster of stepfamilies. Bloomfield covers all the areas of a family but from the perspective of being a stepfamily.
"This book is important reading for anyone in a stpefamily situation. Dr. Bloomfield provides many effective tools stepfamilies can use for healing and growing." Barbara De Angelis, Ph.D.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and warm, but misses 4 key points........1999-10-07
I have specialized in providing professional education and therapy to divorced, courting, and re/wedded couples since 1981. I am 66, a stepgrandson, stepson, and ex-stepfather and stepbrother, an invited Board member of the Stepfamily Association of America, a contributing editor to 'Your Stepfamily Online,' and the author of six books on inner-wound-recovery, effective communications, and high-nurturance relationships and stepfamilies.
Dr. Bloomfield's book is warm, encouraging, and readable - yet misses four core hazards that (I believe) every re/married partner needs to know:
1) why and how to assess and reduce co-parents' psychological wounds from a low-nurturance childhood (vs. divorce);
2) the origin and impacts of widespread blocked grief in adults and kids, and how to spot and reduce it;
3) adult unawareness of a) normal personality formation, composition, and function; (b) keys to high-nurturance families and relationships, (c) effective communication skills, (d) healthy 3-level grief, and (e) stepfamily realities and norms and implications, and...
4) little effective re/marital and co-parenting help (i.e. courtship coaching, classes, informed counseling, co-parent support groups) available in most communities and the media.
In my clinical experience, these factors often combine to block the best-intentioned adults from following well-meant stepfamily advice like Dr. Bloomfield's. If ignored, the factors inexorably promote needy partners choosing the wrong people to re/wed, for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time - and subsequent stresses and eventual re/divorce. Awareness, acceptance, and discussion of these (and related) factors can reduce three of these stressors, and help to achieve "Peace in Your Stepfamily."

Just the first analysis...........2007-04-05
Readers have to understand that this was just the first book written on the battlefield archaeological project that spanned a number of years. The work culminated in a second work, Archaeology, History, and Custer's Last Battle: The Little Big Horn Reexamined
Several other co-workers and collaborators have also published on their work on the archeological and forensic pathology of the battlefield.
Don't judge the conclusions of this work too harshly. As a geoscientist, I would much rather put faith in hard forensic evidence and statistical analysis, than recreations of events based on hearsay, ax grinding, faulty remembrances, flag waving, hero worship, personal bias and any other self serving motivation humans are subject to. Fox uses sound scientific analysis to lay out a time line and sequence of events that has at least been accepted by the National Park Service.
But there will still be experts with thier opinions based on conjecture and arm waving sallying forth to do battle and tilt at windmills.
Archaeological Insights into the Custer Battle .......2006-08-30
This book would be helpful for research but it is too technical for the lay reader.
It sheds new light on the battle.......2002-03-09
This is an excellent book because it cuts through the partisan pro Custer, anti Custer views that are the main theme in almost all the books about the battle written to date. I highly recommend all the books written by Fox on this subject because he has no pre conceived ideas or biases. He bases his interpretations on the physical evidence remaining at the site and draws his conclusions from that evidence.
Archaeological evidence paints the picture.......2000-03-21
Reading accounts of the Battle of the Little Bighorn sometimes leaves a mass of confusion to the reader. Even visitation to the site does not always enable oneself to clearly picture the events of that day. This book, which does not attempt to explain why things happened does much to set the scene and completes the picture that is painted by the numerous accounts of what happened. The reader may find this book to be dry, perhaps repetitious in some place, but in the end, will appreciate the information that is provided. Be aware that reading this book will forever cause the reader to imediately reject any printed material on The Battle of the Bighorn, that is not properly (and correctly) researched. This book is a good reference for any library.
VERY BORING PAPERWEIGHT.......1999-07-10
IT WOULD BE MORE INTERESTING TO READ THE BIBLE BACKWARDS, VERY BORING PAPERWEIGHT - WASTED $ 16.00. ONLY A FEW PICTURES, VERY SMALL DRAWINGS AND TOO MANY WORDS.

Comments on "The Bald Eagle".......2000-09-13
Each chapter of this book begins with an anecdotal episode from one of the two authors, drawn from their considerable experience in the field. The chapter continues with thorough general information about eagle biology. This combination of personal observation and factual information makes for a book that is both interesting and informative. I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about bald eagles and what it is like to observe them.
