4 out of 5 stars Mmmmmm- a lovely book!! Lovely, big, lush, perfect for one Mother of a Coffee Table.......2007-04-05

This is one of my books for flicking through just to inspire a little bit and kick my creativity along if I'm getting a little blocked. It's well over 200 quality pages of full page (and double page) good images, mostly monochrome, divided into classifications of female, male and couples.

There are books and photographers who inspire me more than much of this book but it is a nice package. Composition is good, lots of creative perspectives (a broad range of photographers is always a good start) and the Editors have obviously been looking for quality images and many slightly abstract ways of viewing the human form, the subject you could still be intrigued by if you had three lifetimes to photograph and honour with the recorded image. At times this book can feel a little dated as styles and photography fashions have changed but quality never goes out of style and masterpieces are timeless though there's probably only a few images here that would rate as masterpieces, (who am I to say what's a masterpiece?!) but certainly there's style and quality spilling from almost every page.

The only thing that might disappoint people is that one of the very best images is on the cover so expectations could become so high the rest of the book can't stack up. Still, If I was setting a book up would I want the cover to be the one picture I wasn't sure about including in it? I doubt it!! This is a fantastic book.

    Cheers

5 out of 5 stars Both Male and Female Nudes, Equally Exquisite.......2000-12-12

I don't know if the general public knows how hard it is to find art photography books that show male and female nudes in equal numbers. This book shows both and they are gorgeous to boot. I'm having a hard time telling you a difference between this book and the other nude book I've recently given 5 stars to, "Eros." Both show men and women. Both have artistically perfect work done by top notch artist photographers. Perhaps the difference is more of a cultural one. This book is from chiefly German or German-based photographers and galleries. Thus, its perspective seems more European than it does American. "Eros," however, looks fully like an American book. If you are an American already, nothing will seem really odd or different to you in "Eros." However, unless you are steeped in foreign films, and I am, this "Nudes Index I" book might strike you as more "out there" or avant garde. I had to own both books. How do they compare to Robert Mapplethorpe's own nude books? I've also given 5 stars to Mapplethorpe's book in a much earlier review. Mapplethorpe's work, however, will offend quite a few people. I think, by contrast, only the most prudish of people would be offended by "Nudes Index I" or "Eros." OTOH, you say you want the one done by the really first rate major artist? Well, you're right back to the Mapplethorpe book then. Truth be told, I bought all three so don't look to me as to which book should be eliminated! One fact mystifies me. I spent the same price at Half Price Books on "Nudes Index I" that Amazon is selling it for new. Mine was supposed to be used but it looks new. Knowing you for sure are getting it new at $39.99 here is quite a deal for this art book filled with photos on each and every page. Both "Nudes Index I" and "Eros" would make good gifts as well to your artistic or intellectual friends. I don't know if I'd buy anyone but myself the Mapplethorpe book as a gift. So I did. "Thanks, Carol." "You're welcome, Carol."

        Book Description

"This book of essays is full of rampant idealism. Its authors--educators, think-tankers, corporate executives, consultants, book authors, nonprofit association executives, and a German politician--share a desire to better the world through their ideas and actions. Many qualify as do-gooders in the best sense of the phrase."
        --Christian Science Monitor

This third volume from the acclaimed Drucker Foundation Future Series focuses on the basis of society itself--the community. Featuring the examples of successful communities from New York City to Hawaii, The Community of the Future presents insights from Peter F. Drucker, Stephen R. Covey, Arun Gandhi, Elie Wiesel, James L. Barksdale, and many others. Their powerful essays explore what our communities will look like tomorrow--how we will live, work, communicate, educate our children, and govern ourselves.

        This collection shows readers:
        * How to recognize and anticipate the trends that transform society
        * The impact of new communications technology, including global and virtual communications
        * How to create organizational communities and communities in the workplace
        * How to envision and shape communities that will build values and embrace humanity

From businesses, to communities of faith, to schools, to cyberspace--the gamut of human communities is explored by the world's foremost thinkers.

5 out of 5 stars The Promise and Paradox of the Community of the Future.......2006-05-24

The American writer Willaim Saroyan once said, "In the time of your life, live---so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it."

In this time of global terrorism, rising oil prices, climatic disruption and political decay, hope is an increasingly scarce resource. Leadership too is becoming a perception to be managed and not a trait to be displayed. West African writer and teacher Malidoma Some declares that we have "an instinct of community," and so as societies grow and evolve, they build up resevoirs of social capital, taking generations to fill.

This instinct for community -- toward cooperation and competition, or so called 'co-opetition' by Brandenberger & Nalebuff -- is so strong in humans that we come into this world stocked with such emotions as anger, pride, shame, and guilt -- all of which, according to Fukuyama, "come into play in response to people who either are honest and cooperate, or who cheat and break the rules.

Yet the promise of this communal synthesis is being degraded as we "are using the instinct of community to separate and protect us from one another, rather than creating a global culture of diverse yet interwoven communities." Based on the interdependent models available to us in eco-systems theory, there is the possibility to "to connect to others through their diversity, [to re-establish] communities that succeed in creating sustainable [long-term] relationships."

It is the collaboration and cooperation of individuals in elaborate interdependent networks of relationships that allows new capabilities and talents to emerge. Individual fitness leads to greater societal and communal fitness and the connections and relationships strengthen and reinforce the fabric of society.

Yet as individuals weave this social fabric, a paradox is created -- the individual must surrender autonomy to achieve community. This paradoxical tension can lead to even greater awareness and understanding of the role of the individual in society, or it may contain the seed of our eventual self-destruction.

As Wheatley proclaims, "This paradox can be a great teacher to us humans. When we don't answer these questions as a community, when we have no agreements about why we belong together, the institutions we create to serve us become battle grounds that serve no one. Our institutions dissipate into incoherence and impotence. In the absence of these agreements, our instinct of community leads us to a community of 'me' not a community of 'we'." Such is the paradox and the promise of community.

        5 out of 5 stars good.......2005-10-05

basically satisfied with everything. the book came in good condition and was pretty much on time.

5 out of 5 stars Community will determine the future quality of our lives........1999-02-12

Before WW I, fewer that 5% of the population lived in a city. Today in developed countries, less that 5% live in a rural area. All of this has occured in less than 100 years.

The key to survival and health of this new urban society is the development of communities in the city, by non-profit social sector insititutions, according to Peter Drucker.

Human beings need community. If no communities are available for constructive ends, there will be destructive communities, i.e. gangs to fill the void.

This thoughtfully written, well organized book is about the future -- the future quality of our lives. In "The Community of the Future", the editors have gathered the wisdom and insights from 31 distinguished authors, from around the world, to discuss their unique perspective on the nature of community.

The book is divided into six sections: * Trends Shaping the Evolution of the Community * The Values of Community * The Impact of New Communication Technology * Creating Community in Organization * Strengthening the Social Fabric * Global Dimensions of Community.

If you are interested in creating the future, strengthening our communities and improving our understanding of our world, I highly recommend "The Community of the Future".

Building the global community of the future is not the work of tomorrow. We are each called to build it today -- to build it now.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT OPTIONS FOR CREATING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ACHIEVE MORE.......2004-09-12

THE ORGANIZATION OF THE FUTURE is the best compilation of essays that I have seen on different ways to organize businesses and nonprofits to achieve different kinds of results. The book is full of intriguing questions and choices, and lots of good ideas about how to make the desired changes you select. Anyone who manages people should read this book, and refer to it when effectiveness questions arise. The only thing that seemed to be missing from this book was a "clean slate" approach to organizations, by imagining what has never existed before. That would be an intriguing addition for future editions. The Drucker Foundation has done a real service to us all by creating its series (THE LEADER ..., THE ORGANIZATION ..., and THE COMMUNITY OF THE FUTURE). I hope that a future version will appear on THE MANAGEMENT PROCESSES OF THE FUTURE. That would be an invaluble complement to this outstanding series.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect starter set for leaders -- Great gift for students.......2000-08-15

The three books of the Drucker Foundation Future series represent a wonderful collection of thinking by noted thought leaders. Each chapter in the LEADER of the FUTURE, the ORGANIZATION of the FUTURE, and the COMMUNITY of the FUTURE, is short, concise, and insightful. Authors include Peter Drucker, Stephen Covey, Peter Senge, Frances Hesselbein, Meg Wheatley, and others.

This package makes a wonderful gift for a student, a graduate, someone taking a new job, or someone hungry for renewal. The paperback editions of the books are attractive and easy to carry, and the boxed set is handsome.

4 out of 5 stars oriented toward school system........2005-07-10

I was hoping for information on how I could work with my son. There were some good tips for parents, but I felt that this book was more about working with school system and once properly diagnosed, the school system would direct the efforts to help the child. I'm one of those who doesn't completely trust the system and wants to do more for myself. Still it gave me some information that I didn't already have that I can use when working with my son's teachers. I thought it did good job of describing the issues for smart kids who are having trouble in school, especially in the area of language. It described how school personnel test and asses and child for the various issues and what the test scores mean. I thought the case histories were very illustrative.

5 out of 5 stars This book was an enormous help 6 years ago........2005-01-07

When my child was in the process of being evaluated for possible learning disabilities, I was given this book to read. It was like "deja vue"....so many of the stories/examples within the book fit my child's situation exactly. It helped me understand her evaluation results and also helped me to understand her better. This book was pivotal in leading our whole family down the path to understanding, advocating and supporting our child at home and in the school. It's been 6 years now, and I still re-read parts of it.

4 out of 5 stars Example by allegory.......2004-06-20

All in all the book is okay. It tends to teach by example and allegory but there isn't data behind the stories to back up the conclusions. There is an ample bibliography in the back for anyone interested in following up.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Parent's Answer.......2004-03-07

This book was a God-send just at the time of giving up on the school system-- I took charge and looked for an answer to why my son who was so bright has hated school since Kindergarten. I found out why in this book!! The author lovingly and astutely explains how and at what point the learning process can break down. I was able to pinpoint that area in my son and then use the practical advice Ms. Vail offered. AN ABSOLUTELY MUST BOOK FOR FUTURE TEACHERS (and parents seeking understanding and practical advice). TEACHERS NEED TO BE ABLE TO "SEE" A CHILD WHO IS FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS BECAUSE OF A STRUGGLE HE/SHE IS HAVING WITH AN UNRECOGNIZED LEARNING BREAKDOWN.

5 out of 5 stars Smart Kids with School Problems.......2000-04-02

A very insightful book that explains how a child can demonstrate both brilliance and learning difficulties. The section on testing gave a wonderful explanation of common assessments, exploring the intricacies of scores typically found in these kids.

                              Book Description

For the Germans, the Battle of Jutland in 1916 should have been a simple set piece that lured the British Grand Fleet into a lethal trap. Instead, it turned into a confused, rambling conflict. The Royal Navy suffered higher losses, but the German fleet never again ventured out of harbor to fight. Using previously unseen records, action reports, letters, plus charts and drawings of major warships, a naval historian tells this absorbing tale from the German perspective. It sheds new light on just what happened.

This book earns its stars through being great value at this price. The book does not attempt much analysis - it is mostly just the generally agreed history, illuminated with a collection of quotes from German sources such as the Official history and von Hase' memoirs.

5 out of 5 stars Very Clear easy to read.......2002-01-03

One of the reasons for Germany and Britian being on opposite sides in the First World War was the decision of Germany to build a battle fleet to rival Britian's. By the start of the war Germany had a large modern fleet but it was considerably smaller than Britian's.

The battle of Jutland was an attempt by the German Admiral Scheer to bring to battle a smaller part of the British Fleet and to even up the odds. What occured was a confusing battle which has been very clearly explained in this book. Basically a smaller unit of German Battle Cruiser entered into an engagment with a large unit of British Battle Cruisers. The Germans tried to lure these on to their fleet and instead precipitated an short engagment between both fleets. The Germans returned to port losing some ship to torpedoes.

During the initial fight the German Battle Cruisers were able to sink a number of the British Battle Cruisers. The reasons for this were that the British ships were lightly armoured. British shell design was also faulty and this led to a large number of their "hits" not exploding.

Whilst the Germans sank more ships the engagment was not decisive and the British were able to continue their Blockade of Germany something which contributed significantly to the German defeat. (At the end of the war front line troops were on a ration of 1,500 calories a day)

The book as well as explaining everything clearly and well has a very large number of maps to explain the position and movement of the ships in the battle. In all and example of how naval history should be written.

4 out of 5 stars not so german perspective.......2000-09-16

A very nice research work since this is the first time the battle is narrated as seen from the german point of view (to english readers). In fact the battle of Skaggerak (german name for it) is a classical sea battle (gun vs gun), but amazingly plenty of data and sources are mainly filed on english side. This book tries to fill the gap since official report, archives, wireless messages and countless files are cited to unveil the encounter plot. The review of most significant facts before the clash is quite intersting and instrumental to catch the genesis of moral ascendancy of British naval power over German High Seas Fleet.

The author work is compelling: sometime the narrative brings the reader on board as witness of action and demage report to the bridge. Comunications are vividly narrated, by the way they were so poor that occasionally they approach hilarity. Unfortunately psychological traits of Adm. Jellicoe and Adm. Beatty are quite clear while Adm. Hipper and Adm. Scheer attitudes fail to pop up from the perspective. So this unbalance (perhaps lack of solid sources on the German eminent players) and a consolidated english historical background are the only limits to this fascinating volume for seriuos fellow of naval history or a general reader like me.

4 out of 5 stars a good GENERAL history of the battle.......2000-03-12

I can't say I disagree with the reviewer from Hamburg.. this book hardly possesses a German spin at all but instead seems to be unaligned at best.

It does, however, work nicely as a solid overview of the battle, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a book to allow a full understanding of the decisions made in the Battle and what context they sprang from. If you already have such a book on your shelf, you may not find this valuable.

Its appendices capture the germ of the information contained in the altogether dry Campbell work (which deals almost exclusively with forensic examination of shellfire), mixing it with the commanders' actions and a modicum of anecdotes by sailors in various roles within the swirl.

5 out of 5 stars A New Approach To an Old Subject.......2000-03-07

I found the attempt to view the Battle of Jutland from the perspective of the High Seas Fleet to be a long overdue attempt to compensate for the axiom that "winners write history". It is my view (and apparently Mr. Tarrant's) that this battle must be taken in the context of the German Naval expansion, and the Kaisers pronounced reluctance to risk his fleet in an attempt to reduce or eliminate British naval superiority in the North Sea. The pages devoted to the Dogger Bank bank action and other "preliminaries" are absolutely necessary. It must always be remembered that the failure of the German Fleet percipitated the reliance on U-Boats, which in turn were responsible for the entry of the U.S. into World War I

This beautifully illustrated book is a fascinating beginner-level study of birds in flight. It makes an excellent art-reference book. It's strongest point is the series of images showing each stage of motion in the flight of several types of birds. The writing style is merely average, but is useful as supporting text to the graphics.

The artwork and heartwarming tale will appeal to the preschool youngsters, but the message of self-acceptance and tolerance towards others is one that older children who can read will be able to grasp even more. This is the type of story that parents and teachers can use as a springboard for discussion of acceptance of differences and it's a reminder of how sophisticated children's literature can be. A story with a moral we all can appreciate!

"How High Can You Fly?" is a book that all my elementary students love. As a substitute teacher, often times I find myself needing to fill the gap between coursework. Students remain attentive and interested until the end. I have actually read the story more than once to the same class. The pictures are bright and entertaining. Thank you Janie and Renee for helping make my school days so much easier

How High Can You Fly? is a charming picture book artfully written by Janie DeVos brought to life with simple and abstract yet vibrant full-color illustrations by Renee Rejent. A young bird meets a variety of creatures on God's precious earth, each of which has its own unique talent or gift, but the bird likes its own gift of flight best of all in this simple yet delightful easy reader book.

A little bird discovers that although not all animals can fly, each possesses a unique gift, special in its own right...a timless story about cherishing individuality that will please any child. Bold, whimsical illustrations by Renee Rejent add visual excitement to the story. I look forward to seeing future books by this talented children's author.

Ms. DeVos' book brings a lovely message to young children, allowing them to recognize and appreciate their own special gifts, as well as, those of others. We found the illustrations to be equally as lovely. They were "happy", colorful, and inviting. This book would be a beautiful addition to any child's library.

Jimmy Trenton never imagined in his wildest dreams that his high school chum's step mom would become his best friend-and much more. It was 1958 in the quiet little community of Lakewood, Maryland. Certain things weren't supposed to happen there-but they did. Now Jimmy and his new best friend Carol must struggle with a secret and the reality of their relationship in a time when rules were much stricter than they are now. They must put it back the way it was before things went astray, but can they? It's 1958 in sleepy little Lakewood, Maryland where respectability is so important.

Pleasant read about author's anecdotal observations of birds in flight, written from the perspective of an avid birder. Author is neither a ornithologist nor aeronautical engineer and understands little about the science of flight. No substantial content for those with an interest in understanding "How Birds Fly." Title is therefore deceiving.

Brilliant photographs and illustrations help answer the question of how birds fly. Bird anatomy, the role of feathers, and why birds migrate are clearly described.
