Next Best Thing to Owning the Movies!.......2007-09-11
I'll start this review by saying that, in fact, I haven't read THIS book, but I own Grant's older book from the '80's of the same title (which I bought from a used book seller for $3!), and I assume that this is the same material, but with some new stuff added. I plan to buy this newer book, because I can't wait to see this author's views on the subsequent movies that came out.
John Grant's description of the Disney movies and cartoons is amazingly detailed, and he profiles every character, from Mickey Mouse to obscure supporting characters that most people have forgotten about. While reading the entries, I remembered several movies and cartoons that I had seen as a kid, and forgotten about. It made me want to run out and buy all the old movies on DVD, so I could watch them again and relive this simpler time!
While Grant is definitely a Disney fan, he does look at the movies with a critical eye, and is willing to admit some of the shortcomings they had, including some of the racism that appeared in the earlier films (although I think he was a little too soft on this, which could be seen as insensitive to many people). He also has this charming, very British style of writing, that's addictive to read. Great escapist fun for any Disney fan!
When will there be a new edition of this wonderful book?.......2005-10-30
This is almost certainly the best book on Disney animation ever published - it is difficult to think of superlatives that other reviewers haven't already (quite rightly) used in their praise of it. (To the reviewer who complained about the omission of Eega Beeva: Eega Beeva is a character in the comics, not the animated movies.) Astonishingly comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, and written with the kind of stylish wit that makes the mere act of reading the text a joy in itself, the Encyclopedia deserves all the praise that has been heaped on it.
I have only one complaint. This is the third edition, and was published in 1998. Why oh why has there been no subsequent edition? What has gotten into Disney's corporate head that they have not begged Mr. Grant, well known for his extensive writings elsewhere, to bring the story of Disney animation up to date? Such a book is desperately needed!
Great Disney Resource.......2003-02-22
This is a definite must-have for any Disney fan. The book is divided into three basic sections: Characters in shorts, characters in television shows, and characters in features. Each category has a mention of every Disney character created until 1997 including interesting articles about them. This is also a great place to find information on lesser-known or forgotten Disney characters such as Spike the bee from a number of Donald Duck cartoons and Little Hans, a star of his own wartime propaganda film. Combine this with hundreds of pictures from the films and you have a book that is sure to be a favorite of any Disney fan.
No Disney fan should be without it!.......2002-12-17
First, while the title of this book is accurate, it is also misleading. This is no fluffy, flimsy book containing some fun descriptions of Disney characters from the latest popular films. This is an intense, in-depth look at EVERY Disney animated character since Walt began his career. The book is divided into two parts, "Shorts" and "Feature Films". The shorts have the usual gang, Donald, Mickey, Goofy, Pluto, and so on. After each characters bio is a list of every Disney short they've appeared in. Don't be worried or fooled by by this truly encyclopedic book - it is not a boring A to Z book. Color photos pop off of every page, including some from rarely seen Disney shorts. The feature films section not only includes detailed character bios, but plot summaries and "making of" details, cast and crew credits, and more. You buy this book, you will have a list of EVERY Disney short ever made (including the early "Alice" shorts and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit), every feature film in chronological order, and enough information about each one to be the champ of any Disney trivia game!
Excellent but not with every characters.......2000-11-02
Excellent Disney historic resource. If you're a Disney fan you will enjoy it, unless you're locking for a line about Eega Beeva, because you won't find any- a pity. Daniel

Thanks to digital cameras, it's now easy to shoot a picture while traveling, record it in a digital file, and send it over the Internet to the folks back home. This guide gives you information on digital camera hardware and solid photography techniques in one source.
Digital camera hardware is, if you'll pardon the pun, developing fast. For that reason, the authors don't make many specific make-and-model recommendations and instead focus on features and technical terms that you'll see mentioned in cameras' promotional material for some time to come. If you're wondering what an IrDA port is (an Infrared Data Association port) and whether you should pay extra for smart-card storage media, the brothers Braun can advise you. It would be nice if this book included more information on recording audio and full-motion video with digital cameras--several units have those capabilities--but the still-photography information here is quite good.
You can probably learn more about digital photography by experimenting--after all, digital mistakes don't cost anything and are easy to erase. But if you want some help deciding what kind of camera to buy and a little guidance in the art and science of photography, this book will prove valuable to you. --David Wall
Book Description
This book guides readers through the essentials of both "pure" and "hybrid" digital photography using a hands-on style of instruction. Beginning with the fundamentals of photography, this guide addresses how shooting differs when using digital methods. Other subjects covered include hardware and software needs, shooting tips for a variety of settings, and manipulating and outputting images using a variety of techniques and formats.

A Good BookChocked Full of Information.......2001-06-09
I really enjoyed reading this book because of the authors no nonsense approach to teaching the art of digital photography. I felt that this book presented beginner and intermediate techniques on the subject which is important for anyone pursueing a career in this field. The book was well written and humorous. My favorite chapters were the ones on night shooting, image sharpening and color effects. I also enjoyed reading the chapters on the variety of photographic software. This book falls short in one catagory and that's the lack of color examples. It's difficult to see the effects of lossy, color effects and sharpening on a simple black and white image. I hope that in their next book, they will include more color examples to get their point across. Otherwise this is a good book. You can learn a lot and it's well worth the money spent.
Great book for Beginners, Chocked Full of Information.......2001-06-04
I really enjoyed reading the Braun brother's book, "Learn Digital Photography in a Weekend". I appreciate the authors no nonsense and humanistic approach to teaching the basics of digital photography. The sections on nighttime shooting, image resolution and color correction were some of my favorites to read. One of the books pluses is that it's loaded with important information and it's easy to read. The downside of this book is the lack of color examples. For example, it's hard to see the effects of lossy, color resolution and photo sharpening with a simple black and white image. I suggest that in thier next book to add more color images for examples. Otherwise this book is worth the money because of the information alone. I would definitely read it again.
Book is better that the last review.......2001-02-05
I don't usually write reviews, but I was prompted by the previous review. I was looking for this book because I had given my copy to my son and I wanted another. I have been an amateur photographer for more than 30 years, so I guess that the jargon was not a problem. Digital and film have much in common, but there are some serious differences, highlight loss or blowout to mention just one. I found this book provided me with the insight (within the limits of digital cameras) that I needed to make digital photographs as good or sometimes better than conventional photos
Warning! This book is NOT for beginners........1999-07-24
Unless you are already very familiar with photgraphy terms and techniques, you are buying a lot of frustration and wasting your time and money. The author many time talks as if he is talking to another professional photographer. For example the author did not explain by a simple diagram what he means by 'angle of the subject from the sun' or 'exposing off the ground' or 'exposing off the sky'. Before start using many photography terms in the book, the author does not define or explain terms like exposure compensation, flash fill mode, etc. or at least does not explain clearly. The author wastes a lot of paragraphs on useless talk that is rather obvious or does not add to the understanding of the subject matter. This is dangerous to the poor trees that get cut. In the enire book there is not even a single diagram! Color pictures are only in the center of the book. Most photographs are small size black and white newspaper quality.

Book Description
This timely book explores the defining features of post Keynesian economics through an examination of pricing, and empirically investigates pricing behavior from the post Keynesian point of view. Paul Downward uses a synthesis of ideas from realist philosophy and methodology to explore post Keynesian pricing theory. He identifies a coherent core of post Keynesian pricing theory, strongly supported by a wide range of evidence. The author critically reviews and extends both the econometric and the non-econometric evidence as a basis of understanding the causal processes of pricing. Taking into account Keynes's notions of the 'weight of evidence' and 'negative analogy,' the post Keynesian account of pricing offered in the book appears compelling. The evidence presented will raise substantial questions about neoclassical accounts of pricing.
This book will be required reading for those interested in post Keynesian economics, methodology, behavioral economics and institutional economics as well as for marketing and management theorists and those generally interested in pricing decisions.

Book Description
The French Foreign Legion remains one of the world's most enigmatic military forces. Created in France in 1831 by King Louis-Philippe and immediately posted to the scorching deserts of Algeria, it went on to become a unit renowned for its cruel training regime, and its absolute disregard for death in battle. Unlike any other military unit in the world, its ranks are open to foreigners, and traditionally it has received many troubled or criminal individuals fleeing from problems back home. Today much has changed. The Legion now numbers only 8,500 men, and is far more discriminating about who it recruits. Using an aggressive and arduous training program, it has turned itself into one of the world's true elites, a status it has continually proven since its inception in battles of extraordinary courage and bloodshed.
The History of the French Foreign Legion reveals the facts and reality behind this compelling unit. Its history in combat is described in full, from its use in the conquest of Algeria in the 1840s to its role in the war against terrorism today. The ascetic lifestyle of a legionnaire is explored in depth, including first-hand accounts of brutal training, cruel punishments, and adjustments to the French way of life. The myths concerning joining the Legion are dispelled, and there is a full description of the recruitment and selection process. Chapters on specialist training discuss the technical and tactical excellence achieved by the Legion soldiers. Finally, a section is devoted to the superb equipment and weaponry of the Legion units, everything from the famous dress uniform to the Leclerc tank.
Lavishly illustrated and written with detail and energy,
The History
French Foreign Legion is a fascinating journey into a military unit which is almost unique in the history of men-at-arms.
Customer Reviews:
A short history of a famous fighting unit........2007-07-07
How do you make a famous fighting unit look boring. Well, you write a book about it. Then you add some pictures that kind of depict the unit involved. I was disappointed with this book. As one of the previous reviewers has already stated, they have pictures of other units in this book and attribute them to the French Foreign Legion. One picture on page 147 clearly shows French Marines, with a caption of the Foreign Legion with their weapons. There were problems with editing on this book as well.
The first portion of the book details the history of this famous unit. It is a short summary history and doesn't add a lot of detail. Then it covers some of the units and their specialities. This also is not exciting reading. Then they cover the armaments and transportation for the Legion. As one might guess, this is the same for the French Army. The second part of the book plus the mistakes with the photos certainly drove the rating down on this writing. If one wants a good history of the Foreign Legion, try Porch's book.
raptors.......2007-01-04
If you are looking for a detailed history, this isn't it. Try "The Damned Die Hard".
A well- detailed survey of the Legion........2006-04-28
The French Foreign Legion is so famous that its name reaches far beyond military students alone and the general public has a good sense for its notoriety - yet few know the depth and details of its history. That's why THE HISTORY OF THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION FROM 1831 TO THE PRESENT DAY is so important: it provides a detailed survey of the Legion, which began in France in 1831 and fought battles through some of the harshest environments in the world. While today's Legion only holds about eight thousand men, it's aggressive recruiting and arduous training program keeps it one of the world's elite fighting forces.
Good Overview, With a Few Mistakes.......2006-01-21
The French Foreign Legion is one of the strangest military units ever created. One of its original rules was that it could never serve in France itself. This remained in effect until World War I when France needed all the troops it could get into the trenches. Originally it asked few questions about the background of people joining, and it is rumored that an awful lot of german was spoken by off duty legionnaires just after World War II.
This book covers the legion from its inception in 1831 through it's activities today. It covers their victories as well as their two big defeats at Camerone, Mexico and of course Dien Bien Phu.
About half the book is on the history of the legion, the other half is on the modern legion. The modern legion has changed somewhat from its history to become an elite unit of the French army. It has been used in various peacekeeping operations, counter terrorists activities, and in joint operations with other countries such as during Desert Storm. There is also a good bit of description of the equipment used by the legion, from it's standard rifle to the LeClerc main battle tank.
I did see a couple of mistakes, mostly in the labeling of pictures, but these were not serious enough to
An unending series of disappointments.......2006-01-05
The literature dealing with the French Foreign Legion is rich in works that reward the reader with insights into the legion's unique character and heroic past. Unfortunately, this is not one of those books. It is not even worthy of being deemed a "coffee table" book because of the numerous misattributions associated with the photos chosen by the author and those that don't illustrate legion units at all. A glaring example is on page 147. The caption states, "Above: Parading legionnaires..." when in fact what the photo illustrates is troops of France's naval infantry drawn up for parade. This is immediately eveident by the anchor on the kepi of the NCO in the rear rank and the rank brassards of the men themselves which also feature the anchor device in gold instead of the legion grenade in green. As if this were not a sufficient example of sloppy photo selection, how could one overlook or confuse the prominently displayed red sash worn by the naval infantry instead of the blue worn by the legion? This is fundamental stuff folks. Other color plates from period illustrators are so washed out as to be worthless as uniform guides. If you have any interest in the "uniformology" of the legion then you would be far better served by any of the Osprey publications on the same subject or Martin Windrow's Uniforms of the French Foreign Legion which is excellent . Similarly, legion history is best appreciated by time spent with Douglas Porch's study of the subject. Finally, for a contemporary look at the legion one would be well rewarded by reading John Robert Young's book as published by Thames and Hudson. It is a work rich in color photos that are both accurate and informative in contrast to those of Mr. Jordan's. Leave this book untouched on Amazon's electronic bookshelf.
