    Book Description

Architect of the United States Naval Academy, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Scribner Building, and model tenement houses, Ernest Flagg (1857-1947) advanced the cause of classicism while demonstrating a deep concern for architecture's social responsibility. This study of one of the most innovative practitioners of the Beaux-Arts movement in America covers Flagg's early training and Beaux-Arts works, his town and country houses, his commercial and utilitarian buildings, the Singer Tower (which established a new height record while setting a precedent for New York City skyscraper restrictions in scale and density), urban housing reform, and his small houses of modular design.

Flagg, the author notes, combined French nineteenth century aesthetics and the principles of academic classicism with American structural technology to create significant buildings during the Progressive Era from 1890 to 1917. His contributions to zoning and height regulations were essential to New York's first laws governing this aspect of the city's architecture. A confirmed individualist, Flagg produced highly original writings and ingenious inventions for construction techniques in low-cost housing and railroad cars.

Flagg's adaptation of classicism and his concern for urban contextualism make this study of his work particularly timely. His designs have immediate relevance for contemporary architects and preservationists, as well as those interested in the social and architectural history of New York City.

In this beautifully illustrated book Deanne Fortnam teaches you to paint in very clear steps simple naive style roses and more complicated realistic roses incorporated into lovely projects. A good book for beginners as well as more advanced students of decorative painting. The teaching techniques are clearly explained and easy to follow and the color illustrations are exquisite. I recommend this bok highly for all who love decorative painting.

                  Book Description

This book analyzes the effects of wives' employment on the economic status of families, using both descriptive and empirical research. The historical and socio-economic causes of change in the employment status of wives and husbands are detailed. The empirical studies respond to some basic questions about dual-earner families: How does having an employed wife influence family lifestyles? What effects do dual-earners have on the finances of their households and on the distribution of income? What policy changes are needed to recognize the economic importance of dual-earner families? In Working Wives and Dual-Earner Families, one-earner and dual-earner families are differentiated, with particular attention to the impact of wives' employment status (full-time or part-time) on household decision making. Among the most interesting research findings are: total family income or tax bracket and the cost of child care are among the critical determinants of dual-earner employment; married-couple families at the same level of income have very similar expenditure patterns regardless of whether the wife is employed; full-time working wives make the distribution of income less equal, but part-time working wives generate greater equality in the distribution of income; families with full-time working wives have higher income, but they do not save more or have greater financial assets than other families; families with part-time employed wives are similar to those with non-employed wives and differ from families with full-time employed wives. The authors conclude that the real incomes of dual-earner families will continue to grow, as one-earner real income remains the same or declines. Household planning and decision making will increasingly be predicated upon having two earners, which will be perceived as the norm. Dual-earner families, based on amenities, mobility, growing families, and demands for public goods, will drive private markets and public policy.

5 out of 5 stars Grant Writing Strategies.......2002-11-09

Patrick W. Miller indeed provides strategies for winning grants in his second edition entitled, "Grant Writing: Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals." Throughout this easy to read book are limitless well-written definitions and descriptions, often in a sample format. Well thought out appendices and glossary of terms further strengthen the book.

The exercises at the end of each chapter are excellent for the beginner, as well as a wonderful review for those with experience. Within the exercises, the reader has opportunities to locate, review, and analyze solicitations; writing activities before and after call for proposals; writing and editing of narrative; budget spreadsheets; and a simulated proposal process with examples. The sample exhibits throughout the book present realistic directions so that even the most timid grant writer could approach the process with confidence.

Few details are left out of this book. For example, on page 73, the author not only emphasizes the various skills necessary to write a narrative, but he also includes the importance of "a place to write, tools for writing, time to write and a comfortable atmosphere away from distractions." It is the details that make it possible for this book to be an individual self-help course or for classroom use. If I were teaching a grant development class to community college instructors or non-profits, this book could be utilized for both settings.

Federal grants can be confusing and often present themselves as a maze. Patrick W. Miller, PhD., eliminates the confusion through a thorough exploration of each topic area. Particularly helpful are the explanations of the various federal agencies that offer solicitations and the author has included details of websites and how to navigate those websites.

In the preface, Patrick W. Miller, PhD., indicates that the book is designed "to walk funding seekers through the major phases of grant development." This is a true statement along with a variety of ideas and techniques that he presents to assist individuals and groups with developing a grant proposal. "Grant Writing: Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals" is an excellent resource and would serve multiple purposes for individuals and institutions that purchase the book.

Miller's second edition systematically covers the entire competitive grant writing process from identifying funding sources to the planning that organizations must undertake before making applications to the writing of actual proposals to following up after submissions. He goes beyond the mechanics in each section, providing advice as to key factors to be considered at each stage of the process.

Numerous exhibits will help the reader, particularly the new grant writer, in planning and preparing applications. For example, a planning chapter includes exhibits that advise how to structure requests for information from funding sources and how to obtain copies of previous winning proposals. Other chapters provide numerous samples and explanations of the various parts of a grant proposal, with an entire chapter devoted to budget preparation.

The authur includes a glossary, list of additional resources, and exercises with each chapter. The exercise solutions illustrate good planning practices and model proposal outlines, cover letters, and proposals. Individuals responsible for grant writing may find this a good text for workshops held for administrators and professionals within their organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Tool For Successful Grantwriting.......2002-10-23

As an educator, I appreciated the concise format Dr. Miller used in his explanation of the complex process of grant writing. The organization of the book and detailed explanations of the phases involved in proposal writing helped the reader gain a clear understanding of the grant writing process. Especially useful were the numerous exhibits used to illustrate sample letters, graphs, flowcharts, budgets, etc. involved in the grant writing process.
The chapter reviews and practice activities actively engaged the reader into a guided practice of required components at each phase. The numerous tips and strategies from an experienced grant writer will help this inexperienced educator procur funds for my school district. Many thanks, Dr. Miller!

I'd always thought my proposals were well written. But after reading Winning Strategies for Developing Grant Proposals, I got a much better understanding of what grant reviewers are really looking for.

I must say that I've had more success getting much-needed funds for our community projects. It's easy to read, and makes a lot of sense.

It's really important these days to go the extra mile to get limited funds. And Winning Strategies for Developing Grant Proposals really made a difference.

                                    Book Description

Talking with your kids about alcohol use, drug use, and addiction can be difficult for any parent. For recovering parents, conversations with your children about drug use and abuse are even more complex, urgent, and personal. Here, with her characteristic intelligence and sensitivity, foremost recovery author Claudia Black provides clear direction and gentle support for discussing your past addiction with your children. In "Straight Talk from Claudia Black" you will meet five different families and explore with Dr. Black how each of the parents handled discussions about recovery, relapse, and their children's own vulnerability to addiction. Dr. Black also addresses the latest research on genetics and addiction as well as practical prevention strategies for raising resilient children. While you can't make up for the past in a few conversations, you can't completely protect your children from the enormous reach of addiction, you can, with Dr. Black's guidance, move closer to becoming the parent your children need you to be - and the parent you want to be.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing, not what I expected.......2005-04-09

The description of this book states it's for parents "whether they sobered up last year or 15 years ago".
The introduction says it will address families whose children were not affected by the addiction as well as those who were. It doesn't.
I got this book in the hopes it would help me with whether and how to talk to my kids about my addiction. It didn't.
I've been clean and sober for 15 years now and it's time to talk to my preteen kids before they get into the same trouble I did. Unfortunately this book focuses only on parents whose kids have suffered due to their addictions and not at all on those whose addictions predate their kids.
It may be a good book for some, but it wasn't at all what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars What Recovering Parents Should Tell Their Kids.......2004-01-13

Black, an addiction expert known for her work on the adult children of alcoholics (It Will Never Happen to Me), here shifts her focus to recovering parents, in turn addressing the needs of their children. Based on the sensible idea that parents struggling with addiction face unique challenges in fostering antidrug/alcohol attitudes, her latest book acknowledges the genetic component of addiction while stating that the process is not inevitable. Provided are useful tools for assessment (e.g., "the family tree") and remediation grounded in the 12-step program philosophy. Early chapters review current information on brain chemistry, generational vulnerability, and phenomena such as multiple addictions, tolerance levels, relapse, and blackouts. The emphasis then moves to straightforward and realistic advice about self-forgiveness, making amends for past behavior, and new ways of relating to loved ones. Personal stories drawn from five diverse families are used throughout; limited references are provided at the conclusion. This candid and hope-filled book merits strong consideration by large public libraries and specialized collections given the prevalence of some form of addictive behavior in families.

                                              Book Description

This study of the battles waged between 1066 and 1135 by the Anglo-Norman kings of England - William the Conqueror, William Rufus and Henry I -is a major restatement of the nature of medieval warfare in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Bringing together the two major trends in recent medieval military history, the study of military organisations and the study of campaigns, Stephen Morillo illuminates the interrelationship of military organisation and social and political structures and brings many new perceptions to bear, such as the central role of the familia regis, the King's military household. The roles of armies and castles and the normal activities of warfare are examined to show why sieges were far more common than pitched battles. Siege and battle tactics are analysed in the context of social and political influences, administrative structures and campaign patterns, and a connection is proposed in most pre-modern warfare between government strength and infantry quality.
Dr STEPHEN MORILLOteaches at Wabash College, Indiana. He has published numerous articles on Anglo-Norman warfare.

                                                Book Description

This collection gathers some of the most important, and previously disparate, publications in English on various dimensions of the Chinese Diaspora. While it includes sections on the historical evolution of the Chinese communities overseas, the focus of the selection is on the last half of the twentieth century. The last 25 years are a particular focus, since the launch of the reform policy in China, and against a backdrop of the accelerating pace of globalization.

With a population of more than 30 million, the Chinese living outside of the Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan (called collectively the "Chinese Overseas" or the "Chinese Diaspora") constitute an important force in the socio-economic transformation of modern China as well as in the countries they reside. They have also played a significant role in the interactions between China and these residing nations. Viewed from the perspective of international migration, the Chinese Overseas are one of the most dynamic immigrant groups in the world, contributing to globalization and multi-culturalism.

                                                  Book Description

The contribution of the overseas Chinese, particularly from Southeast Asia (Nanyang), to China’s early modernization constitutes an important and neglected chapter in Chinese history. During the same years which saw the emergence of the Reform and Revolutionary movements, the ruling Manchu government also turned to the overseas Chinese for needed capital and expertise. Exposed to Western values and often successful in capitalist ventures, leading overseas entrepreneurs were in a special position to introduce new concepts into China. Dr Michael R. Godley’s study traces the rise of overseas Chinese capitalism together with the emergence of an aggressive campaign on the part of the Ch’ing dynasty to attract overseas support. The ways in which Southeast Asian Chinese capitalists were ultimately recruited into the Chinese bureaucracy and the conditions under which they were permitted to begin new enterprises cast light upon many socio-economic problems while revealing much about the acculturation process.
