Book Description
New in Paper
You can easily form beads, candlesticks, and art objects from just a rod of cold glass and a torch. Heat it, manipulate it a bit, and almost instantaneously beautiful and new figures emerge from the fire. That's flameworking. A top teacher of the craft explains how to do it all, providing exactly the same information and exercises she gives her beginner's workshops. Lavish illustrations capture the entire artistic process. Look into the different types of glass to choose from, and find out how to melt a ball at different points of the rod; flatten it into a disc; and shape it into hearts, wings, butterflies, and the moon. Turn those designs into jewelry, hanging sculptures, and stirrers. The results are amazing!
Customer Reviews:
Mears's Flameworking book.......2007-07-16
I like the book a lot and am more than pleased with the projects. I love that there is a progression of more difficult projects that build skills. Unfortunately, the writing and pictures are not set up alongside each other, and where the directions are not easy to follow, the photos are not right beside the text (rather, they are on a different page) to clarify the directions.
This book is a lot better than the couple of books I have read in the library which had lots of pictures but no really clear directions to help a person make the projects they describe. So, I give this one a 4, and I do recommend it to people who do basic bead making and glass fusing and know a number of the simpler techniques. This book will take you further and make flameworking and fusing many times more fun.
Good book for boro glass work.......2007-06-11
I am a new lampworker, more interested in soft (Moretti/Effetre) glass, so this book wasn't as helpful as I had hoped since it focuses solely on "hard" glass. But the techniques and instructions are well written and would be very helpful.
Good Boro book.......2007-03-25
If you are thinking of buying this to learn about soft glass- moretti, bullseye, etc.- DON'T! If however, you are starting boro work, it is a good intro.
great helper.......2007-01-03
It is a really essential book for beaders.the events are built step by step.at the beginning of the book, the reader learns the basic theme: how to set up his/her studio(every detail is mentioned) and at the end of the book, he/she becomes capable of creating artistic objects. the exercises in the book are basic and you can develop yourself easily after succeded them.I advise the book every flame work lovers.
Good Flameworking book.......2006-11-06
This is a great book for beginner flameworkers. Good pictures and directions.

Architecture Theory since 1968
ASIN: 0262660555 |
Book Description
Between the late Renaissance and the early nineteenth century, the ancient arts of architecture were being profoundly transformed by the scientific revolution. This important book, which won the 1984 Alice Davis Hitchcock Award, traces the process by which the mystical and numerological grounds for the use of number and geometry in building gave way to the more functional and technical ones that prevail in architectural theory and practice today. Throughout, it relates the major architectural treatises of successive generations to the larger culture and the writings of philosophers, mathematicians, scientists, and engineers.
Alberto Pérez-Gómez is Director of the School of Architecture at Carleton University in Ottowa.
Customer Reviews:
Breathtakingly smart........2003-09-08
Perez-Gomez takes you on an amazing trip from the discoveries of Galileo the arguments of Durand towards the 19th Century.
The explanation of the way in which we lost the mythic aspect of the architecture discipline is devastatingly logical and to the point.
This book is nothing short of a must-read for anyone interested on understanding how things got to be the way they are.
The end of poetic architecture.......2000-09-29
From the very title Alberto Pérez-Goméz 's remarkable study refers to Edmond Husserl's phenomenolgy. Using Husserl and Heidegger's thought Pérez-Goméz analyses the crisis of the methaphorical role of architecture. The advent of Cartesianism is for him the starting point of a process that has, from that time, developed until our contemporary epoch. Scientific thinking has instrumentalized architectural thinking changing architecture into a merely purposeful activity. Architecture has; in this way; losen its role of metaphor of universal meaning and it has more and more become a pragmatic and non-representational culture. At the very beginning of this crisis the author places Claude Perrault's theories on architectural orders. They reveal quite clearly that orders have become only guidelines for design rather than portrayers of a divine, poetic reality as they were in the Classical tradition. Pérez-Goméz very profoundly analysises theories of architecture from that time until the end of 19th century, focusing on the central role played by Durand, the French theorist who more than any other stigmatized this trend. The book, firstly written as a doctoral thesis, focuses upon geometry and the changed use of it within architecture. To this regard very insightful are those parts where Guarino Guarini and Girard Desargues are dealt with. The book constitues one of the best reflections on the modern condition in architecture and it manages to suggest a path for a correct rethinking of architecture within modern culture.

Book Description
Edited by Stephen C. Foster, Director of the Fine Arts Dada Archive & Research Center, University of Iowa. . . Dada was probably the most radical and significant of all the avant-garde movements which flourished in the early twentieth century. . . . [Crisis and the Arts] is a monumental project whose importance will be massive and enduring. -- Dr. Richard Sheppard, Magdalen College, Oxford, United Kingdom[Professor Foster] knows well the material, the scholarly literature, and the international network of scientists in the field of twentieth-century art history. . . . The completion of this project will enhance resources available at colleges and universities everywhere. -- Prof. Dr. Wulf Herzogenrath, Director, Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany Drawing together an excellent slate of authors, the series addresses virtually every aspect of Dada, from cultural politics . . . to its manifestations in Eastern Europe and Japan, areas with little if any previous literature. -- Patricia Leighten, Fellow and Associate Professor, Queens University, CanadaDuring World War I, an international group of young artists and writers fled to Zurich, in neutral Switzerland. In reaction to the horror of the War and the onslaught of new technology, as well as to the suffocating aesthetics of futurism and cubism, these artists began to create a new kind of art -- art that was antilogical, anti-aesthetic, anarchistic, confrontational, shocking. Performing and exhibiting at the famous Cafe Voltaire, these artists called the new art Dada.Dada soon exploded on the scene in other art capitals of the world: Berlin, Cologne, Hanover, Paris, even New York. Participants in the Dada movement included some of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Jean Arp, Sophie Taeuber Arp, Hans Richter, George Grosz, Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hch, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Raoul Hausmann, Marcel Duchamp, and others alarmed critics, incited outrage, and generally tried to throw into question every possible preconceived notion about art and life. The Dada movement offered one of the first, most systematic, and perhaps most probing prognoses and analyses of what has been described as the crisis of modernism. Operating out of a period of acute cultural and social collapse and revolution, Dada provided a model for critique which continues to influence the present profoundly. Approaching the millennium, G.K. Hall & Co. is proud to announce the publication of Crisis and the Arts, the largest and most comprehensive treatment of any 20th-century artistic movement -- and the first to explore Dada in its broad sociopolitical matrix.8 volumes published between 1996 and 1998Lacking self-identified Dadaist, the initial task of this volume is to identify those movements in Baltic, Slavic, and Asian regions that exhibit the same spirit of revolt and criticism that typified their Western contemporaries.1997

Book Description
This highly innovative and original book proposes evolutionary microeconomics as a synthesis of the collective schools of heterodox economic thought with complex systems theory and graph theory.
The book charts a research program for evolutionary economics that encompasses the theory of dynamic efficiency and emergence in markets, a computational model of the learning and interacting agent, a competence based theory of the firm and the household, and, via a theory of expectations and plans, an agent-based foundation to macroeconomics.
Principally a work of meta-theory, The New Evolutionary Microeconomics argues for a radical refocus of microeconomic research toward the evolutionary nature of institutions, preferences, technology and knowledge.
This challenging new book should prove timely and important for evolutionary and computational economists as well as those in the fields of managerial economics, business studies and marketing.

"Water is vital to social and economic development whilst both arable land and water are scarce. Managing water is highly capital intensive, and capital is also scarce. Simultaneously, there are environmental consequences to any intervention in the water cycle whilst the economy depends on the environment. Therefore, for an integrated catchment, economic analyses must be undertaken on the analysis of the impacts of the proposed scheme upon the catchment as a whole. This book starts with the Dublin declaration for defining sustainable water management and sets out the economic framework needed to support the implementation of its requirements. The book is divided into two parts: the theory and applications. The theory side sets out the nature of choice and decision-making, considering social and policy issues for water and resource management. The applications side provides the tools for the economic evaluation of water needs, the use of economic instruments and cost-benefit analysis. Handbook of Water Economics: principles and practice: Adopts an integrated approach to managing land-water interactions. Includes good practice guidelines for each method along with a comparative summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Illustrates techniques with real applications from projects in Egypt, South Africa, China and the United Kingdom. Includes case studies on water availability, sewerage and wastewater treatment, tradable permits, flooding, and hydrometric data. Incorporates other aspects of water management, including law, sociology, psychology, development studies and market research. Is orientated to practical application. This book is suitable for MSc students taking environmental economics modules in Departments of Environmental Management, Geography and Engineering, and researchers in Hydrology. This book will be a useful resource for professionals and policy makers in water companies, water authorities, NGO's, government agencies a

Book Description
"A Worm in the Teacher's Apple: Protecting America's School Children from Pests and Pesticides" illustrates the national problem of pesticide dependence, and outlines proven and cost effective alternatives to the "exterminator" approach to pest control. It highlights the heroic actions of risk takers in our school and regulatory community, the greedy actions of the pest control industry and the non-action of many, including the USDA, who are charged with protecting our children from pests and pesticides. It awakens concerned parents, teachers, and even pest management professionals to the problem of ineffective pest control with stories of insects, rodents and poison peddlers in our school system. The material in this book is intended for teachers, school officials, regulators, pest management professionals, but mostly for parents who care about their children's learning environment.
Customer Reviews:
Protecting School Children.......2005-05-29
This book outlines the problem of protecting school children from the misuse and overuse of pesticides in our schools. In addition, it outlines simple and inexpensive methods that can be applied by school districts. Schools are using the IPM method successfully throughout the country.
This book outlines the problem and provides a solution that should be supported by every parent and every school district.

Product Description
Grumman's F 14 starred in Top Gun and in numerous conflicts world wide. Capable of fighting at over Mach 2, the Tomcat is our front line Navy fighter. Squadron's book shows you 80 pages of detail and overall photos, most in color. You can exactly detail your model's tie downs, radar, landing gear, weapons, cockpits and instruments, and much more from these incredible photos. Squadron publications provide modelers with in depth developmental histories of famous military aircraft, armor and ships. The books are particularly valuable in determining paint schemes.
Customer Reviews:
Very good for modellers..........2002-09-01
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the Walk Around of the Tomcat is priceless for the Tomcat afectionado.
The pictures, mostly B&W, but some great color, covers every aspect of the Tomcat in great depth. All the varients of Grummans superlative fighter are covered as well, notably with pictures of the differences.
If you are a modeller in particular who is into superdetailing, or just a fan of aircraft or F-14's, then I recommend this book. If you are looking for a more general overview of the Tomcat, then save your money for a book more along this line.

One hundred birds are profiled, each with a color photograph, to ensure accurate identification. A seasonal section informs the reader of:
Migrating birds that can be seen during that season
The foods and plants that can attract those birds
Where to go to view year-round and migrating birds
Cool Springs Press's partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird species, bird habitat, feeding, and other related topics.
This series of books from Cool Springs Press targets the beginning bird watchers for ten states.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2006-03-25
My husband and I recently moved to Mississippi and seen that we have alot of different species of birds in our backyard. We hung up a few birdfeeders and needed this book to help identify all the different kinds of birds. This book was a real help! It not only lists the birds but also what they eat, their nesting habits, if they migrate and so much more. "Mississippi Bird Watching: A Year-Round Guide" was well worth the money. I ended up buying another one for a friend. If you are a beginner birdwatcher I'd highly recommend this book.
