Fresh Dialogue Three brings together the work of four young and innovative studios who share the distinction of being selected as participants in the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York Chapter's Fresh Dialogue series.
BASE is a studio with offices in New York, Brussels, and Barcelona. The fashion industry accounts for nearly half their business which includes developing image campaigns and corporate identities. HONEST, founded by Stella Bugbee, Jonathan Milott, and Cary Murnion, works with a variety of fashion, art, music and architecture related clients including MoMA, Kate Spade, and Virgin Records. Brooklyn based HunterGatherer was founded by Todd St. John in 2000. Recent projects have included work with MTV, Nixon Watches, and Adidas. STILETTO is a design collective comprised of three partners: Stefanie Barth, Julie Hirschfeld, and Joan Raspo. They work are in variety of media including web design, film, animation, and motion graphics.
Design writer Veronique Vienne coaxes the inner thoughts, struggles, and insights of these young designers in her skillfully moderated roundtable discussion.
Fresh Dialogue Three will help designers, young or old, understand new and important trends in graphic design today.

Good book, but I think it needs updating.......2007-01-02

Basically the writing is crappy, the pictures are bad and the techniques described in this book are old and written from the 1960's. I also think the writer of this book does not stress the dangers and health hazards involved with printmaking enough...This is really dangerous stuff to work with and it is irresponsible to have a book that does not give a big warning about these hazards at every step of the way...Usage of some pigments can cause lung cancer if inhaled, inhaling orderless acid fumes can cause emphysema, rosin dust is highly explosive and can cause asthma, naptha causes lung damage, etc, etc...I think this book is old and kinda crappy. I only give it three stars because it does contain a couple of tips and tricks about printmaking.

Outstanding descriptions of many techniques.......2005-10-03

This is a brief book, just 100 pages or so, and heavily illustrated. As a result, I'm puzzled about how this author managed to cram so much great informtation into it. It covers the basics of etching, engraving, soft-ground, sugar-lift, aquatint, mezzotint, drypoint, and a few other techniques, along with preparing the intaglio plate, trial proofs of various kinds, and seemingly endless tips for the artist working in a small, self-equipped studio.

Banister puts strong emphasis on home-made equipment. The most exotic tool he describes is a glass muller for mixing ink. Even then he notes how to put it together, using the kind of glass blank used for telescope mirrors. The book has a few formulas for etchants and grounds, but fewer than other books - the real strength here is in discussion of tools and technique, down to very practical details. Photos showing tools and techniques are quite helpful, but Banister complements them with written detail of fine points that would be hard to capture photographically.

This is a great resource for an admirer of prints (like me), who wants to know more about how prints and the marks in them are made. I imagine that it would be very helpful for beginning printers, too, especially those without access to a big studio or expert guidance.

I love this book. I am an intermediate level printmaking student and it has helped me so much. I have a lot more confidence with etching my plates, and I know how to get what I want out of them. It helps with techniques from learning to time your acid baths, preparing, tool orientation, etc. It has been a great help in the lab.

A very good reference ,for beginners as for already experienced etchers.It has a very detailed explanation of each step,with very useful practical indications,b/w pictures and a short appendix of famous etchings. I really recommend it.

An outstanding text.......2007-08-10

Leaf's text covers a remarkable range of intaglio techniques. The first chapters cover the basics of tools, printing papers, and setting up a workshop. Next, she covers the basics of familiar printmaking techniques, etching (including soft ground), aquatint, and some interesting variations. This section also includes recipes for inks and grounds - not encyclopedic, but a basic set of materials for different techniques. Leaf covers each technique methodically, describing its goals, materials, and process. The end of each chapter offers an especially helpful "what went wrong" section.

Following the basics, Leaf continues with some elaborations, including multiple layers of aquatint and viscosity printing. She also lays out some unusual techniques, including collographs and "tuilegraphs." That's a fascinating variation on linoleum prints, but based on slightly different materials and very distinctive ways of creating the image in the printing surface.

Despite its strengths, this book has a few significant weak spots. Safety standards aren't always what a current reader would hope. For example, discussion of the corrosive etchants talks about flushing eyes with water in case of an acid spash, but doesn't mention goggles. Elsewhere, she mentions protective gloves in the text but omits those gloves from the photos that show the process under discussion. And, when it comes to disposing of spent etchant, I can't agree with pouring "neutralized acid on the ground where you don't expect anything to grow." On the positive side, techniques are profusely illustrated, showing both techniques and finished products.

Those problems just mean that the reader should approach this with a critical eye, not avoid it completely. There's just too much good here to give up.

I cannot complain about Leaf's intro to etching. My only caveat is that although the title includes engraving, there is only one rudimentary chapter on engraving. But otherwise the structure and clarity of the the text is great. I'm always referring back to it.

This book is stocked as reference in a classroom situation. Lots of detailed information on many techniques in an easy to follow manner along with detailed photographs. Detailed recipes for etching solutions and description of appropriate use. Great for the novice but also valuable as a reference. Lots of valuable information for a small price.

OUTSTANDING BOOK.......1999-12-17

This book is wounderfull. I purchased the book before it was for sale and when it came to my door i was as happy as can be. I sent my engraving pictures to Tom and when I saw my engraving in it i got dizzy with exitement. This is the first time i have had my work put in a book and It was put in the best book of all times. I rate this book with 10 stars but that option was not available on the review rating. The work of the other engravers is unbelievably amazing and i am very satisfied at the great job Mr. Turpin did on the layout of this amazing book

I thought Tom Turpins first book "Modern Custom Guns" was fabulous. Now he has outdone himself once again. "Custom Firearms Engraving" was every bit as good, if not better than Turpin's previous book. At last we have an author who details the work and art which is gun engraving.The photo's are unsurpassed!

As a serious Student, Collector and Antiques Dealer specializing in Art Nouveau, I've taken several trips to Europe to see the Important Art Nouveau Architectural Sites, Shops and Museums. Along with my personal library of over 350 books on Art Nouveau, I "thought" I had "seen it all" --- Thankfully On the Pages of this Glorious Book I have discovered page after page of Breathtaking examples of Art Nouveau that I have never seen anywhere before !!!..
The book's main emphasis is on jaw-dropping examples of Exterior Architecture, along with a good representation of Interiors, Paintings, Graphics, Architectural Iron and Metalwork, Stained Glass and Tile ,... Especially unique to this book are the sections specifically dedicated to showcasing the Beautifully Crafted and Carved Woodwork of Doors and Shop Fittings, another Highlighting Large Outdoor Garden Sculptures and still another which offers detailed views of carved and cast Architectural Stone Facades.... Printed in Luminous Color on Thick glossy stock which is a pleasure to feel as one turns the pages. The Photography and Layouts are superb ... Written in Spanish, but a Visual Inspiration even for those (like me) who do not read the language. They simply do not make books on Art Nouveau any Better than this "MUST Have" !

The return of the remnant of the Long Parliament signalled the reversal of the conservative tendencies of the Protectorate, and the revival of the Commonwealth. Denounced by its enemies as anarchical, the 'Rump Parliament' was nonetheless welcomed by many contemporaries, hoping for a lasting republic. Too often these hopes have been ignored by historians and the Republic dismissed as a chaotic epilogue to the Protectorate, or the prelude to an inevitable Restoration, an approach that neglects considerable evidence for the strength of the regime.In a comprehensive examination of the restored Commonwealth, Dr Mayers redresses that imbalance. She explores in turn the sources of the Republic's adverse reputation, Parliament's domestic priorities, internal dynamics, and relations with the Army, the City of London, and the English and Welsh provinces, as well as foreign policy, the challenge of ruling Scotland, Ireland and the colonies, and the sophisticated republican endeavour to imagine the future constitution and project a positive political identity through ceremonial, iconography and the print debates. Fabulous little book.......2000-04-28

This is a very useful little book. We bought this because we live in Seattle and recently bought a bird feeder that's now being visited by all kinds of birds. The book is really helpful - it starts with a few pages of info about how to attract birds to your garden and then the rest of the book has colour pictures of birds on the right-hand side page and writing about them on the left. The birds are organized by type, but also by colour which makes them pretty easy to identify. I think this is a great book for beginners like me who just want to know roughly who's feeding in their garden!

Great compact field guide for trips and walks!.......2000-03-11

This little field guide (6" x 4") is great for carting around. The west edition covers the states west of the Rockies very well. The full color book begins with a foreward about attracting birds. The next few pages describe how ot look at a bird, how to read the range maps, and how the birds are organized in this guide. And then here comes the birds! On each left bage, there is a catergorized column with the catergory name at top (catbird and bluebirds, chickadees and titmice, crowned sparrows, etc.), followed by range maps and a cool fact. On the ajoining right page, the birds are shown (male and/or female and/or juvenile). I think this is a great little field guide.
