this book has beautiful photos but is not for someone who has a normal country place. it doesn't have ideas that working class america can afford. lots of swimming pools,golfing greens, and tennis courts.

Paul Bennett's book of Edmund Hollander Landscape design has been an important resource to us as we plan the renovation of our property. The diversity of designs presented from a variety of perspectives have given us a wealth of ideas. Most unusual is the quality of photographs which sadly, in most of the other landscape books we have looked at, don't seem to do their subject justice. The photographs alone make this book well worth the price.

This is a visually appealing and instructive book. Like the gardens themselves, the photography of Betsy Pinover Schiff is strong, luxuriant, and imaginative. Whether a sweeping panorama or a featured detailed, she reveals the abundance of architectural elements and vistas in beautiful light. A "must have" book for anyone contemplating gardens on a grand scale, or for anyone who simply desires the pleasure of viewing country landscaping photographed at its best.

This is a beautifully photographed and well laid out book. It is somewhat repeative. However, the subject is focused and it is interesting to see how different sites were designed - or how the nuances varied to suit different sites.
A good, but short, element specific reference guide follows the details of 11 sites. Most helpful is that the sites are in the general geographic and zone area in which I work.
I am sure I will use it as a design reference.

I am now a full-fledged ceramics nerd. Many ceramics shops have been springing up in my area and I am now a regular at one. There is nothing better than turning a blank piece of pottery into an originally painted gift or keepsake. This book shows easy-to-do designs and techniques. A must-have for any other ceramics maniacs out there.

I have the first edition (2001).
Despite the fact that I think some "axioms" of economics are based on muddy, suspect foundations, I gave 5 stars to this book because it is a FUNNY and very didactic introduction to microeconomics. So that, if you want to grasp the main principles of this area I think you will have an excelent "companion" in your hands. Most examples are very practical and cool.
Their macroeconomics book is also very didactic. I think it is a characteristic of the authors.

In this study guide, Hall and Lieberman provide an excellent accompaniment to their brilliant text. All the exercises are very clear, as is the answer key, which gives one the opportunity to see where one went wrong in a particular concept. The scope of the study guide is exactly the same as that of the book. Basically, if you can do everything in the guide, you have mastered their concepts.

Most of us give money to charity. This book will help you think about how to link your giving to your personal values, making sure you support causes that are most important to you. It will also help you organize your giving.
When I organized my giving and linked it to my own values, I found that I was willing and able to increase my giving, and to get more joy and satisfaction out of my gifts. That's a great result!
This book is a "workbook" with exercises that help draw out your most deeply held beliefs and links them to your giving. It does not espouse any particular set of beliefs, so it is good for everyone.
I found it a great help in thinking about what I hoped my gifts could accomplish. I also evaluated my existing giving, adding certain charities and dropping others when I focused on those that were more important to me.
A great book for givers at every dollar level from modest to substantial!

An understudied aspect of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is the creation of hundreds of thousands of grandparent-headed households that have become home to children bereft of one or both of their parents. Such "skip-generation parenting" presents a host of challenges to the families involved and the social programs designed to assist them. Despite this unprecedented caregiving responsibility, older surrogate parents remain relatively invisible, hidden in the shadows of HIV care and the demands of raising a child. The primary goal of Invisible Caregivers is to generate, support, and guide program and policy initiatives designed to meet the needs of elder surrogates and their families.
Most social service programs are not able to identify the needs of older surrogates, often because these surrogate parents in HIV-infected families are reluctant to make their needs known for fear of social stigma or possible reductions of benefits. Multiple systemic barriers to case management and other services also frustrate attempts to bring available resources to elder caregivers. These barriers include professional ignorance or denial that HIV affects surrogates, eligibility restrictions through CARE, limited funding and age restriction on OAA, and a fragmented health and human service system. Because the issues facing elder caregivers are many and varied, this collection covers a host of issues: community health, aging, HIV services, child welfare, education, public policy, and mental health.

Good, but definitely could have been better.............2004-05-01
I want to start off by saying that I certainly enjoyed this book, but it could have been better. I'll start off with the positive first.
As in all of his book, McDonough writes very well in this book. I found myself gliding through the pages. But now for the bad.
I consider good maps almost essential to a great military history; I will not consider a book worth five starts if maps are nonexistant or are not good. The maps in this book are few, and, well, bad. The few provided are small and hard to read.
I also found myself wanting to learn more of the details. As are McDonough's other books, this one is not very detailed.
These reservations put aside, I would recommend this book to any Civil War or military history buff. But, if these problems bother you too much, I would recommend this book for only "hardcore" Civil War buffs, or those specifically interested in the Murfreesboro (or Stones River) Campaign.
Bar Room Brawl!.......2003-10-07
This bloody Murfreesboro, Tennessee battle became a turning point in the central theater of the Civil War. Starting with a Confederate surprise attack, 24,000 casualties would be inflicted on both sides before the Union army would awake to find the Confederate army having deserted the field three days later. Fought by two mediocre generals, Braxton Bragg and William S. Rosecrans, this engagement was intense and ugly. Once begun, there was little strategy involved. The opposing armies simply mauled each other.
Stones River was the first major battle in the Union's plan to seize the Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta corridor. Claimed by many to be a tactical draw, it was a Southern defeat of the worst sort. The South lost control of an invaluable asset, middle Tennessee's railroads. It is from this spring board that Union armies once again sliced the Confederacy in two.
