Customer Reviews:
Mighty $teep Learning Curve.......2006-09-01
"Gazebos and Trellises : Authentic Details for Design and Restoration (Historic Landscape Detail S.) (Hardcover)" is a series of 200 rather small plates of historic structures that garden designers, preservationists and landscape architects may find of marginal use. The author's renderings mainly derived from field and library research of East Coast structures are unemotional, 1-point perspective, flat representations that I find undemonstrative and difficult on the eye.
In the back of the book are three pages listing plants and Vines from: Colonial Times and Republic 1700-1820 - Later Times 1820-1875 - to -Modern. Included in the list is Gloire de Dijon, 1853, - Gardenia, 1899 - and Souvenir de la Malmaison, 1893; among my personal favorites.
The author's rendering style is so dispassionate that his plates of Mount Vernon, Montpelier, and Monticello seem foreign to me.
There is an inadequacy of books on garden trellis and gazebos in general; and a paucity of anything of this genre. Nonetheless, I remain unenthusiastic about the content and cost of this book.
Inspiration.......2001-08-08
Peter Joel Harrison provides a valuable service to architects, designers, preservationists, landscapers and homeowners by researching, recording and presenting the details of historic homes and gardens. His books, full of accurate drawings of historic fences, gates, gazebos, trellises, pavement and garden walls, are tools for anyone who's restoring an 18th or 19th century home or landscape and inspiration for anyone who hopes to infuse some of yesterday's charm into a new building. This book presents fascinating garden buildings in all of the styles of America's architectural heritage. If you're looking for a gazebo or pool house to match your period home, this is the book to start with.

Surprising and beautiful........1999-08-30
This is a wonderful book. Morell is able to bring to life eveyday objects, making the world suddenly new and strange. The beauty of it is that he uses straight and simple photography to do this, rather than distorting the negatives through cheap tricks. He surprises us at every turn and his pictures are both fascinating and beautiful.

Odio (Hate) chronicles the misadventures, life experiences and repugnant habits of Buddy Bradley, oldest son of America's most dysfunctional suburban family. Buddy's moved to Seattle, which Bagge portrays as the grunge capital of the U.S.; a place of cheap apartments, cheaper drugs and plenty of lowlife, with rocker deadbeats working in used bookstores and organizing bands. American satirical cartooning at its most inventively hilarious. -Publishers Weekly I Love Hate. -Matt Groening creator of the Simpsons
Customer Reviews:
This Book of tips is a must for new parents.......2005-03-02
We loved this book and read it cover to cover in the beginning and reverted to it over and over again for its insightful tips that first year. Dr. Orenstein's book contains tips that are not contained in other leading first-year baby treatises. We recommend it highly. We are now well on our way trough the Toddler version and think it is exceptional as well.
Quick, Enjoyable Read.......2002-09-12
This is definitely not a know all, do all guide to babies but it definitely is very handy. There are tips in here on everything from diapering to soothing to taking baby out. These quick tips were a perfect read for those short trips I had to take on the bus while I was pregnant. It was also a book my husband didn't mind reading. Most of the 'guides' I have are huge and you could easily overload on information. This one is perfect to add to your own common sense. A handy, lil book I'm sure you'll enjoy.
Other Considerations.......2001-02-12
As background material for this book, the reader is referred to "The Scientist in the Crib" (Dr. Gopnik, et al; Perrenial, 2001). It offers a fresh and detailed evaluation of the language acquisition process by infants. At about 6 months of age, a critical change seems to occur. The specific pronunciation patterns of the language(s) heard begin to be retained in a very focused manner. Also see "The Monday Tape" (The Snow Water Corporation) at Akilo.com for more insight into this process. This audio tape, one of a series, provides multilingual speech patterns for infants. These tapes are available exclusively through Amazon.com (not available in stores). It appears that they should help an infant (birth to age 2) gain good pronunciation skills for many widely used languages.
That paper cover ain't getting harder, ya know!.......2000-10-03
A five-star follow-up to "Crying Baby!" The 365 Tips saga continues as Dr. Julian, now conscripted into the ranks of the soldiers of Titan, devises plan after devious plan to trip up the evil Toddler. I can't wait to see how it all turns out in "365 Ways to Stifle Your Teen's Individuality and Keep Him Tied to Those Apron Strings!"

First Time Mom ~nt.......2007-02-12
Some helpful information enclosed but mostly just a simple relaxing book to read.
The pages have large print and you can breeze through this. Got a few good tips but not as many as I thought I would get when I started reading this book.

Book Description
Denis Davidov was an officer of hussars, a partisan, a Russian hero and the inspiration for the character Denisov in Tolstoys epic War and Peace. Here, for the very first time in English, are his captivating memoirs which, with dash and lan, convey the Russian perspective on this cataclysmic conflict. Davidovs memoirs cover the confrontation between the French and Russians in Prussia in 18067, including the horrific battle of Eylau; the Russian invasion of Finland in 1808; the French invasion of Russia in 1812; and the War of Liberation in Germany in 181314. The memoirs cover the 1812 campaign in particular in great detail as it was here that Davidov made his legendary reputation. Gregory Troubetzkoy is an expert on Russian aspects of the Napoleonic Wars.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding translation of an important memoir!.......2003-06-16
In an era of dashing young military heroes, Denis Davidov was a heroýs hero. He was, in some senses, a Renaissance Warrior: a man comfortable with the men on a battlefield, in a camp singing and telling stories, with the aristocratic leaders who were often both his friend and foe, and also comfortable in his continuous pursuit of ladies. Most unusually, and here is the essence of his Renaissance nature, Davidov was not only a warrior but was also a wonderful writer. His poetry and his prose were each popular in Russia in measure equal to his military heroism. Davidov was such an unusual man of his time that none other than Tolstoy used him as a model for the devil-may-care character Denisov in War and Peace. The great Russian poet Pushkin also remembered him, referring to him as a singer and a hero.
Until now, Davidovýs words were available only to readers of Russian. Now, thanks to the efforts of Gregory Troubetzkoy, they are brought to life in English. And to life they are indeed brought. Translation is not a science, but an art, and a bad translation can kill words as easily as a good translation can enliven them. This is an excellent translation: Davidovýs humor, insight, and emotion literally pour from the pages of this book.
Davidov was in some ways a rough individual, as he came through the ranks and made his reputation as a leader of irregular partisan guerrilla groups. He found it difficult to adhere to the more standard discipline of regular units. Yet he had a civilized, romantic nature about him as well. The campaign of 1812 was bitterly fought, and seen by many Russians as something of a holy war. As a result, prisoners were not always taken, especially by the partisan groups. Davidov was always careful, however, to obtain receipts for his prisoners, and he treated them with respect.
Even in his youth, Davidov was aware of the political and other considerations that sometimes overrode the ideals and single-mindedness of youthful fervor. Just before the peace of Tilsit, he was informed of impending peace. At first, he was not pleased, as he wanted to avenge the Russian loss at the Battle of Friedland. When he saw the people who were close to his commander, however, he understood the reality of the situation:
I galloped over to headquarters. There were crowds of people there: Englishmen, Swedes, Prussians, French Royalists, Russian military and civil servants who knew nothing of either military or civil service, men of intrigue and without employment. It resembled a market-place for political and military speculators whose previous hopes, plans and actions had already thrown them into bankruptcyý
I looked around at the fashionable crowd that had gathered, reflecting that these were the very people who were recently so confident that Napoleon could be easily defeatedýWith hangers-on such as these, how could we even think of continuing our struggle with the enemy? I had stumbled into the midst of what was to me a new world ý people who lived under a real roof, never giving a thought to what might be happening on the battlefield. How different from the world I had left a couple of hours ago, where men spent their time under open skies, facing bullets and cannonballs, geared up for endless fighting.
Davidovýs reputation mostly stems from his leadership of the Partisan activities against Napoleonýs army in the 1812 Russian campaign. While it must be said that much of his success came against stragglers and soldiers weakened by the awful conditions experienced during the withdrawal from Russia, it is also true that his efforts, using only a few hundred mounted horsemen at a time, caused the French army a great deal of difficulty. His success must be measured not only in terms of casualties inflicted, but also in terms of the psychological damage done to those who survived. Davidovýs descriptions of his 1812 campaign activities make for some of the best reading of that nature, and present a very different picture from that normally read by western readers.
Davidov was a true Russian hero whose efforts, especially in 1812, were instrumental to Russian success. But it is his writing ability that brings his campaignsýand his insightýto life, and presents a view of this period only now available to the Englishýspeaking public. Thanks to Troubetzkoyýs lively translation, amateur and serious historians alike will want to read this book.

Davidov's Memoirs.......2001-04-17
Davidov is best known as a leader of Russian partisans during Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. One of the inspirations for his memoirs was Napoleon's subsequent denial of the importance of the partisans in this phase of the war. Unsurprisingly, then, the memoirs often seem argumentative, and present themselves as a mixture of personal experience, hearsay information, and analysis. The primary concern is with things that are worthy of being deemed "history" in the grand sense, and in order to make historical arguments, Davidov relies heavily on hearsay. Among his goals are (1) to document and to take credit for his own achievements as a leader of partisans; (2) to explain, to analyze and to critique strategic and tactical decisions of other leaders; (3) to explain important military events in terms of their less well-known causes; (4) to share his experience of famous military leaders (he gives a lengthy characterization of Suvorov, and decribes his observations of Napoleon).

A book packed with outstanding photography........2005-02-20
Whenever I am not underwater, I am often found photographing birds in which I have achieved some modest success. This book is packed with pictures of the highest quality I have ever seen in any book which is "not" about photography. Whether they are standing, perched or even in mid-flight, the pictures are just stunning. The reason I have deducted one star, however, is because the photographers who took these excellent pictures are not named in the book. Sadly, all we learn is that the photographs came from a particular picture library. Simply not good enough!
High quality photography is very important when it comes to determining the difference between birds of different species. I still can't tell the House Sparrow from the Tree Sparrow or the Song Thrush from the Mistle Thrush and it is books like this which both explain and demonstrate those differences by setting such high standards not only in photography but also elsewhere.
So what have we got? A high quality book which describes just about all there is to be described in terms of ornithology; The birds around us, how birds work, behaviour, binoculars, photography, keeping notes, bird-watching in towns, inland waterways, the seashore, cultivated areas, forests, mountains and so forth. Altogether an excellent book for the amateur ornithologist who really does want to learn more about his hobby.
