In this first monograph on his work, architect Neil Denari sets his sights on the gyroscopic horizon, a term based on the altitude device found in most aircraft. Just as a plane's gyroscope creates an artificial horizon line for the pilot, Denari often eliminates the physical earth as datum or locus of experience, turning to cultural, economic, and graphic forces as points of departure for his work.

This long-awaited book combines photography, cultural criticism, and meditations on Los Angeles and Japan, along with Denaris trademark computer renderings and descriptions of over 20 architectural projects from the last ten years. Three of the most important projects discussed are the addition and renovation of the Arlington Museum of Art, the construction of an experimental space at Gallery MA in Tokyo (which won awards from I.D. Magazine and the Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles), and the first Microsoft retail store. Other projects include prototype housing in Tokyo, the Kansai-kan Library Competition, the Vertical Smoothouse in Los Angeles, Technology Research Park in Agoura Hills, and the Museum of the 20th Century in Los Angeles.

Gyroscopic Horizons shows an indepth look into the process, motivation and presentational work from one of the most important young american architects currently practicing. For a first monograph, Denari's work is seamless offering a unique journey through the architect's portfolio and logic. Denari's book approaches a very important issue for understanding culture and technology. In 1987, renowned architectural critic and historian Kenneth Frampton (architecture, Columbia U) separated Neil Denari out among his peers as a more thoughtful designer. As Frampton predicted, Gyroscopic Horizons contains enormous insight and energy into this thoughtful architects work. Landmark First Monograph!

This book is an excellent resource and covers all topics in a sufficient and easy to read manner and definitely covers all the "elements". Anyone that is interested in Photogrammetry will find this book quite useful.

Book Review: Elements of Phtogrammetry.......2000-09-27

This book is substantially revised from the previous edition in 1983, some 17 years ago. Consequently, new topics are added, particularly on GIS and digital photogrammetry. The appendixes on least squares adjustment, co-ordinate transformations, collinearity equations and digital resampling are particularly useful.

This book is clearly one of the best ones around in the area of photogrammetry. The chapters are properly organised and the concepts are explained clearly.

Of course, every book has to focus on its intent and target audience. The authors did this with flying colors. If there is anything missing in the current photogrammetric literature, it surely must be a book that reorganises the chapters into an operational book of case studies on photogrammetric practice.

I strongly recommend the book to you.

The problem of optimal consumption and investment is concerned with the decisions of a single agent endowed with some initial wealth who seeks to maximize total expected discounted utility of consumption. The decisions are the rate of consumption and the allocation of their wealth directed to risky and risk-free investments over time. The problem was first studied by Paul Samuelson and Robert Merton in 1969; however none of their formulations took into account the possibility that an agent might go bankrupt in the process. In a set of articles published in 1979 and 1983, Suresh Sethi and various co-authors explicitly introduced a bankruptcy value/penalty in the consumption/investment model. In addition, they also introduced a nonzero subsistence consumption level, which makes the consideration of bankruptcy even more important. This provided the ability to deal mathematically with the problems of bankruptcy in the study of consumption and investment. Optimal Consumption and Investment with Bankruptcy provides a useful frame for deepening our understanding of the consumption and portfolio selection behavior of individuals and households.

I THINK THIS IS A GREAT BOOK, I LOVE THE WAY YOU EXPAIN WHY WE SHOULD NOT NAME OUR YOUNG AS IF THEY WILL NEVER GROW-UP. WE NEED NAMES THAT WILL CARRY US WELL THRU OUR LIFE TIME.

This book was a waste of money. The book never touches on Hindu or Middle Eastern names other than Jewish. It is very judgemental and seems to make fun of people. I would not ever recommend this book to anybody. It is so trendy it even has "seen on Oprah" on the cover. Save your money for a latte or something trendy that tastes good. Forget the trendy books, and please forget the trendy names!! Find one you like and your child will not be made fun of. I suggest trying to come up with nicknames for any name you choose. Remember Deloris!:)

Best baby name book ever!.......2001-08-03

This book was so entertaining and insightful. Sure, sometimes it was opinionated, but it's nice to hear a few opinions about a name anyway. I really enjoyed their perspective. It's a few years old, however - go with the new edition: The Very Last Word on First Names. Haven't seen it, but it's sure to be good.

The Last Word on First Names.......2001-05-08

The authors possess a modicum of knowledge relative to the meaning of some names, but their presumption that they are in some ways arbiters of what qualifies as an "attractive" name is laughable. They authors judge that there are many "far more attractive" names than Vance for a boy, but Fred, Caleb, Barney, Moe, Angus, Mack and Tully fared just fine as reasonable choices.

With all due respect to the Barneys, Moes and Freds of this world, I'm glad, as a Vance, that my parents did not read Satran's and Rosenkrantz's book. If it came down to these other choices or Vance, I'm happy to have settled for such an unattractive name.

Too judgmental.......2001-04-29

For all of the intelligence the authors seem to have, it is a shame that their book is so incredibly biased about names. For instance: " KERRY, a county in Ireland, but more importantly, a name for girls and sometimes for boys, though it shouldn't be. " I want to know why this is so? Of course, it is based solely on the authors' opinions and as far as I'm concerned this book is far too judgmental. Find a nice open-minded book that will give you the background on names without throwing in personal feelings!

Short, but good.......2004-05-04

This book details what is often known as the only other battle, besides Gettysburg, fought on Northern soil: Corydon. Conway does a great job describing the battle. The problem is that this battle was just big enough to be called a battle, as Morgan's 2500 men fought 400 Home Guards. That is why the book is forced to cover much of Morgan's Raid, and not just the battle itself. The book's only weakness is how little its subject matter is, an better overviews of Morgan's entire Ohio Raid are done in far more detail in other books.
