Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good insight into a historical treasure of the church.......2006-01-15

This book is the door that opened me to the appreciation of Medieval arts from the eye of one who counts the past as a great heritage. People these days often think of the Medieval days with a certain sense of despise. We forget that we see a bigger world than the Medieval people did because we are standing on their shoulders. While we may know more about this world, we have much to learn from their understanding regarding the world yet to come, because spiritual truths are timeless. Spiritual truths aren't about how many angels standing on a pinhead. This book brings the spirituality of this ancient heritage vividly to life. Being a protestant myself, I certainly benefited greatly from it, because church history did not begin from the Reformation.

5 out of 5 stars The portal between heaven and earth.......2005-05-26

Fr. Barron's book was used in the course on the church and the arts at my seminary; the course strives to connect various aspects of art, architecture, music, etc. into the spiritual life of the church - this book fulfills that purpose admirably. It is an extended meditation upon humanity's link with God, using the idea and image of the Gothic cathedral as the central icon or focus upon which this meditation is based.

His analysis is erudite and wide-ranging, drawing upon his own experiences and reflections, as well as references past and present in the greater corpus of Christian and intellectual traditions. For example, in the chapter on Virtues and Vices, Barron flows easily from Aquinas to Flannery O'Connor (both of whom are frequently reference throughout the text); in other places, he incorporates Bertrand Russell and Pythagoras on mathematics, Tillich's idea of the ground of being, Rahner's idea about the incomprehensibility of God, the theologies of Augustine and Teilhard, Dorothy Day and the Desert Fathers. The ideas incorporated here include those of this world and of other worlds, drawn together into harmony and unity, while still retaining aspects of particularity.

Barron looks at particular aspects of the cathedral, drawing both on the physical and emotional responses one might get being in a cathedral. There are architectural and artistic features of cathedrals designed to deliberately evoke certain responses, symbolic of the status and relationship of human beings to God and the heavens. This includes the darkness upon entering, the verticality and light of the high windows, and even the very shape of the cathedral itself. `The building itself is a cross,' Barron writes; `as we walk through it, admiring its variegated faces and aspects, we are, unavoidably, walking through a cross.'

Barron explores the design features such as tall walls, flying buttresses, and cruciformity, as well as the artistic features such as rose windows, labyrinths, gargoyles, and the exterior facades. Elaborate in detail and polyvalent in interpretative possibility, the Gothic cathedral includes elements for people of differing educational levels and backgrounds, seeking to be a place where all of humanity could come together as one before God. `There are indeed no greater shrines to a spirituality of the earth than the Gothic cathedrals produced by the medieval mind.' These churches were intended both as portals to heaven as well as a foretaste of heaven.

This is a short book - indeed, I was able to read it in one sitting. Part of this was due to the engrossing nature of Barron's writing; it is easy to get swept away into the spiritual heights and depths of his descriptions and narrative flow. Each brief essay can stand alone (just as one might focus upon a particular aspect, such as praying the labyrinth in a cathedral), but like the cathedral, it is the combination of all the aspects taken together that makes it truly remarkable - there is a comprehensive vision that forms from Barron's meditation. This is a book that calls for repeated readings, and shall accompany me the next time I visit a cathedral.

This is a good resource for those interested in architecture and churches, as well as those who want a rather unique way of thinking about spiritual growth and representations in the world. Nonetheless, Barron is quite definite in his conviction that the Gothic cathedral, however remarkable a construct, is still a place that needs the life of the people around it for its true fullness to come into being; `if the cathedral is a body, then the liturgy - both celestial and earthly - is its soul.' The worship of the church always looks beyond itself, even in the midst of such splendour.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing meditation.......2002-05-09

Fr. Barron's book is truly a small gem. Very compact and readable yet extremely spiritual and philosophical, it gets right at the heart of the very essence of the great cathedrals. Simply looking at their form, though very beautiful in itself, is not enough without completely immersing oneself in the mentality and spirit of the people who built them. This rich mentality is in sharp contrast to the agnostic hedonism that resulted from the Enlightenment. As an architecture student, it gives me great hope that, as he points out in the book, we are in an age when people are becoming increasingly interested in spirituality and symbolism and long for a reality deeper than the profane and the mundane. Given the spiritually and architecturally impoverished and overall pathetic nature of most Catholic churches built in the past three decades, this meditation is like a candle in the dark, not only harkening back to a time when everyone knew that God was the center of the universe, but inspiring hope that that time will one day return. In short, this is an excellent book that I recommend to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars A devotional that uses cathedrals as the metaphor........2001-09-22

Cathedrals are monoliths of faith gone by; sacred geometries that tower above cities and towns throughout Europe. Cathedrals are now major attractions for tourist groups, projects for endless restorations and museums of meditation.

In "Heaven In Stone and Glass", Father Robert Barron (a Catholic priest and professor of theology) has brought together a readable devotional, that combines a heavy dose of fundamental theology with a brief pragmatic explanation of how and why the Great Cathedrals were built as they were.

But be apprized that this text is really a devotional that uses cathedrals as the illustration for Father Barron's homilies. Robert Barron spent years in France and uses the Cathedrals of Notre-Dame and Chartres as his architectural examples, but these cathedrals are applicable to the propensity of cathedrals throughout the world Some readers may quail at the conservative theology that Robert Barron promotes. He states that we must come to grips with the fact that we are sinners "disoriented, lost, desperately in need of a guide". And that the church is the ark of our salivation "as long as we sinners stay in the confines of the church, we will make our way to the light." However, if this is not your spiritual belief, don't take flight, for Robert Barron's writing is as engaging as it is opinionated.

I read this while visiting the great Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, and I highly recommend that you read it while visiting a Cathedral. This book can add meaning to your next cathedral experience while providing a strong devotional base. It is evident that cathedrals hold stories of salvation to those who can read them as a metaphor. They are "symbolic manifestations of a spiritual universe that cannot be seen" and much more than stone and glass. Robert Barron has written an engaging devotional and useful guide. Recommended

4 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting.......2001-09-22

Robert Barron's enlightening little book explores the rich symbolic world of medieval cathedrals. Written as a series of fifteen meditations, "Heaven in Stone and Glass" approaches the cathedral as an intentional evocation of both Christian belief and the Christian journey. Barron's observations are rich in metaphor and allusion. His images are strongly drawn: the nave as womb, cruciformity as a way of the cross for all entrants, verticality as an invitation to transcendence, the rose as music of the spheres. He is also a voluminous reader, citing sources as diverse as the Desert Fathers, Dante, Flannery O'Connor, and Alisdair MacIntyre.

One criticism though. Despite his deep knowledge of cathedrals and their meaning, Barron misstated a few architectural details. Mostly notable was his contention that the flying buttress (not the pointed arch) was the architectural breakthrough that made brilliant illumination possible. But don't let this lapse deter you from enjoying this excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Microeconomics.......1999-05-18

I bought this book to help me with my first year introductory course in economics. I found the book reasonably good. However, I must point out inconsistency in the examples and some mis-prints. These tended to put me off track. Examples are plenty but some are not completely explained. Also, the book is much too basic for a first year course in microeconomics.

4 out of 5 stars Useful but Not Necessary.......2004-05-28

In the my real estate school (Arizona School of Real Estate and Business), we were provided with more than enough study information and opportunities to review. Nevertheless, I felt the need to throw some more money at the process and went to Amazon and ordered the Guide to Passing the Experior Real Estate Exam. I looked through it a few times but found that the questions were remarkably exactly like the ones my school gave me to review. After taking the test I realized that buying this book probably contributed nothing to my passing of the exam.

I do not say all of this to say that the book is useless; it is far from it. However, I want to dispell the myth that you need to go out and purchase extra materials to pass the exam. I have since loaned my book to several licensees-to-be within our company and the book was much more help to them. This was primarily because I took the Experior exam immediately after classes, so the information in the book was something that I had immediate and more familiar access to within my study materials from school. However for the those who borrowed the book and proceeded to pass the exam, the book was helpful because quite some time had passed between their schooling and taking the exam.

The Guide to Passing the Experior Real Estate Exam is strong in that it has many questions to review and practice with AND it takes the time to explain the answers to the questions. Many of the answers are regretably short and not thorough, but many are very insightful into the questions that students have.

The faults of this book are not inherent to the book. The book accomplishes what it sets out to do very well. But the faults of the book are related to its relevance and necessity. Do not neglect the use of the materials provided to you at school thinking that the more money you throw at your real estate education the better you will do. It's generally not true. But if you are rusty on your knowledge and getting ready to take the exam or your school does not provide adequate study helps this book is a great option.

        Book Description

Sustainable forest practices have become a pivotal issue within the forest products industry for a variety of reasons ranging from a broad sense of environmental awareness and responsibility to a more self-interested concern for maintaining the economic productivity of forests. Whether the forest products industry widely adopts sustainable practices, however, depends on their long-term economic viability. The development of broad demand and markets for sustainably produced wood products will be a key component of that economic viability.

The efforts of retailers J Sainsbury plc (JS) in the United Kingdom and The Home Depot (HD) in the United States to stock their shelves with products drawn from well-managed forests place them at the forefront of this global issue. These large, respected retailers are uniquely positioned to merchandise sustainable forest products to the mass market and by so doing, lend credibility to these products and demonstrate the importance of the issue to the industry and the public. The buying power of these two companies is of such a magnitude that their purchasing practices can exert a strong influence on the forest products' industry worldwide.

The initial programs of these two retailers and that of the 1995-Plus Group, a group of major wood products buyers in the United Kingdom, indicate that retailers and large wood products buyers will be instrumental in cultivating consumer awareness of certified products, as well as pulling suppliers toward certification and sustainable forest practices. A comparison of the activities of the two companies, which operate in different competitive, cultural, and political environments, identifies a variety of salient issues that will influence whether or not their initial efforts to market certified products are successful. The ability of these retailers to obtain and merchandise sustainable forest products is a barometer for the future direction of sustainable forestry.

The material presented is drawn from a number of different sources and research methods. In-depth interviews with senior executives, wood products buyers, marketers, environmental managers, store managers, and retail employees from both companies were the primary sources of data. These interviews were balanced by discussions with the 1995-Plus Group, competing firms, and suppliers, visits to stores of both companies in different regions while posing as consumers, and supplemented with a review of published materials.

          Book Description

Since the evacuation of Saigon in 1975, America has committed its forces to combat in more than a dozen military operations. In America's Splendid Little Wars, distinguished U.S. Naval Captain Peter Huchthausen explores the modern development of America's tradition of small wars. From the 1975 operation to recover the hijacked merchant ship SS Mayaguez in the Gulf of Siam to the 1999 "relief intervention" in Kosovo, Huchthausen presents an intimate history of each military engagement. Through eyewitness accounts, thorough research, and his unique insider perspective as an intelligence expert, he offers a fresh analysis of the Iranian hostage rescue attempt, the invasions of Grenada and Panama, the Gulf War, and the missions in Somalia and Bosnia.

This timely and riveting military history shows how America-now the world's sole remaining superpower-has enforced the global "Pax Americana" by developing and honing its military capability and making sophisticated use of the media and public sentiment.

          3 out of 5 stars Twenty-five years of mediocrecy........2006-07-10

A short review of fifteen American conflicts in twenty-five years. The premise is good, but this is a short summary of many conflicts. They include the conflicts in Cambodia, Grenada, Lebanon, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Somilia, Kosovo, and Bosnia. Most of these were disappointing conflicts from the American point of view. The author basically rehashs the conflicts and how America intervened. One conflict he went in detail was Bosnia, but he gave short shift to the success of the reconquest of Kuwait.
These are OK summaries of all these conflicts, but one will not find any new information in them. None of them were new to me.

This is an OK read for those interested in American foreign policy from 1975-2000. This is a summarization of all the conflicts in these twenty five years. Most of them were disappointments to the U.S.. This includes even the successes such as the seizure of the SS Mayaguez. This conflict caused more deaths than it saved. An OK read.

4 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad & the Ugly of U.S. Foreign Policy.......2005-08-12

This is book represents a straightforeward chronology of significant American military endeavors since Vietnam ending with the first Gulf war. The author is obviously a military fanatic, as we are treated to more a strategic analysis of these conflicts than any overall analysis of their long term consequences, but this is a minor criticism of a pretty good read.

This book is of considerable value in light of current events. When I was finished reading about the last 30 years of Americn imperialism, I was left with rather mixed feellings about the extent to which my country has meddled in the destiny of other nations and whether it has truly been worth it. America has had some heroic sucesses (Kosovo), military successes(Grenada,Panama,Gulf War 1) and dismal failures (Lebanon, Somalia). I found the chapter on the failed Iran hostage rescue to be a particularly depressing lesson in military incompetence.

The reasons for launching these foreign wars has been as varied as the results they have acheived, yet one aspect is crystal clear: despite America's monstrous advantages of wealth, military power and technology, long term victory even over 3rd world dictatorships is NEVER a sure thing.

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-08-25

This incisive and unbiased historical analysis of modern military engagements is invaluable as a basis for understanding the motivations, complexities, and details of armed conflicts that have involved America's fighting forces during the critical times covered in this book. Anyone wishing to broaden their comprehension of the policies, politics, and compulsions underlying decisions to engage in battle will find America's Splendid Little Wars a very satisfying read.>

3 out of 5 stars Some succes, some failure.......2004-06-15

This book is a survey of 14 American (some with allies) military actions from 1975 till 2000. For those interested in the military side it is interesting. He also writes a little about the politics behind it, though never really critizing it vehemently. It's a good reference book and I think well researched.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Modern "Small" Wars.......2004-02-23

The major U.S. wars -- especially the Civil War and the highly romanticized WW II -- loom large in the American consciousness. But as Max Boot demonstrated in his "The Savage Wars of Peace" (2002), scores of military engagements, interventions, peacekeeping operations and so-called "small" wars have had consequential impact. Boot discusses many such pre-Vietnam operations, including the efforts to end Barbary Coast piracy, the Spanish-American war, the Pancho Villa expedition, and various South America and the Caribbean interventions, among others.

Now Peter Huchthausen picks up where Boot left off, with a concise examination of more than a dozen military operations that occurred between 1975 and 2000.

Huchthausen, best known as the author of "K-19: The Widowmaker," presents the ignominious (Iranian Hostage Rescue, Lebanon, Somalia) alongside the unqualified successes (Panama, Desert Shield/Storm, Libya retaliation) and engagements in which success came at a price (Grenada, Kosovo).

Throughout the narrative, it is interesting to observe the U.S. military progressively restoring its efficacy following its "hollow" period in the immediate aftermath of Vietnan. And we see the positive effects of the Goldwater-Nichols reforms (1986) in fostering increased inter-service cooperation and improved operational performance. Inter-service coordination, for example, was much better in Panama (late 1989) than in Grenada (1983).

Huchthausen's book is a highly readable, compact overview, easily digestible in one session or two. Well worth the time for anyone interested in the creation of the modern U.S. military, whose recent successes in Afghanistan and Iraq we've all marveled at.

              Book Description

This book discusses the history of the major states of North West Europe during the later Middle Ages using the perspectives suggested by recent scholarship. The structure of rural society is contrasted with the growing importance of towns and trade. While the approach is generally thematic, some narrative traces the developments of states within the contexts of dynastic disputes, external warfare and internal revolt. Religion, heresy, the nature of warfare and debates about elite and popular culture all receive attention.

              Book Description

A Guide to the Birds of the Philippines is the first and only guide that covers all 572 species of birds known to occur within the 7,100 islands that make up the Philippines. The Philippine avifauna includes some 170 endemics - species that are not found anywhere else in the world - and is thus of interest to avid birders around the world. Many of these species are also endangered, due to the high levels of habitat destruction in the Philippine forest, and this book is also urgently needed by conservation workers in the region. The Guide is illustrated by 72 specially painted colour plates that show all but the three vagrant species recently recorded there. Its text gives detailed information about the plumage, voice, range, distribution, status, habitat, life history and behaviour of the birds and is accompanied by distribution maps for all the species described. The expert team of authors and artists includes two prominent Philippine ornithologists, and has combined field experience summing to over 100 years. This book clearly will be the standard for Philippine Ornithology for many years to come.

              4 out of 5 stars a good book.......2005-04-23

I am not an ornithologist. I have been using KENNEDY et al.'s book for several months, and find it all the more useful as I wasn't able to find any other book on Philippine birds. It is frustrating, however, in so far as Tagalog and other indigenous names are not mentioned, or very seldom. For instance I looked for balatitî / bulatitî and lilíw that are often mentioned in my documents, but couldn't find them. Nevertheless, KENNEDY and his team should be encouraged to work on a second, enriched edition, with finder lists in Philippine languages.

2 out of 5 stars Birds of the Philippines - maybe.......2004-02-19

I'm using this book in the Philippines and found it to be somewhat unreliable. Many species are listed as uncommon or rare and not really specific to the Philippines but to more of Asia in general. I've seen many birds that are not included in the book and find it fustrating.

The most use I've used the book for is to show children the pictures and make friends when language difference is an obstacle.

I realize that maybe the Philippines is not as bird friendly has other countries, but expected more out of this book. Maybe this is as good as it gets and there is room for much improvement.

I'm still glad I brought it, but just somewhat disappointed in the contents.

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for this book.......2001-08-15

This book is definitely the best field guide yet that came out of press. The plates are good and rendered better. Although, what is lacking is the description of the different races of each bird. Only the nominate race is described and I still have to refer to the book "Philippine Birds" by DuPont for the info lacking in this book. Still waiting for a better one.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an excellent guide to the birds of the Philippines!.......2000-12-25

Although I agree with Mike Ramos on the quality of the text of this book, I disagree with him concerning plate quality. Often multiple artists can lead to varying quality and lack of uniformity, however in this Philippine guide, which has 12 artists, the plates are surprisingly uniform in layout and generally of very high quality. This book has a winning combination of excellent plates accompanied by clear, concise distributional maps and useful, abbreviated texts all at the users fingertips when the book is opened to a particular plate. There are a few problems with the order and names of authors on the Amazon listing. Robert S. Kennedy is the first author, followed by Pedro C. Gonzales, Edward C. Dickenson Hector C. Miranda, Jr. (his name is incorrect in the Amazon book listing) and Timothy H. Fisher.

3 out of 5 stars The Philippines get a bird guide.......2000-09-30

Long needed, a well written and well organised field guide to the birds of the Philippines is finally available. The 72 color plates illustrate all the species of the islands. A nice color distribution map and a short summary of status and occurance, along with identification information is opposite each image.

Unfortunatly the book follows the current trend in bird guides of using more than one illustrator. The result, though well done in some other books, often results in a clash of styles, and worse, inconsistancy. This book is illustrated by twelve artists and suffers a little from the latter. The work here is uneven, some of the illustrators being better at capturing the look of the birds than others. The proportions, build, and "facial expression" are not correctly drawn for many species. Experienced birders will have fewer problems translating what they are seeing in their binoculars to what is on the color plate. But beginners and more casual observers may encounter some frustration. For example, the figure of the Citrine Flycatcher on plate 62 resembles the bird only in general color pattern. This species usually appears brighter, and you would not be far wrong if your impression on seeing it, is of an all yellow bird. Also, given the head size, the body should be shown slightly larger and more filled out. The folded wing is incorrectly drawn, as are those of every other bird on the plate. Though not unique to this guide, many of the species that have olive or yellow-green upperparts are shown too dull and gray. The White-eyes on plate 70 for instance are bright, trim little characters, that may remind North American birders of Wood Warblers, not the dull, misshapen things depicted.

My guess is that so many illustrators are being used to save time, and perhaps the money needed to pay a really good one to produce 70 or 80 plates. Whatever the reasons, the result here are some illustrations that betray a lack of knowledge of the form of birds that really shouldn't be in a modern field guide. Not with the high standards achieved in other works, which this book otherwise seems to meet.

Despite these problems, all of the plates are adequate for identifying the birds, indeed, many are quite well done, and the authors and artists have produced a work of lasting value. It certainly will be a useful book in the field or reference on the shelf.

              Book Description

This is the very first comprehensive photographic guide to the birds of mainland Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and Borneo, including the birds of Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Indochina, South China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Covering 668 species, the volume contains a distribution map for each species in addition to more than 700 brilliant color photographs, many appearing here for the first time. The photographs are complemented by a concise text providing all the information needed to accurately identify species in one of the world's richest avifauna regions.

Given the notorious difficulty of photographing rainforest birds, this book represents a major achievement. It is an ideal volume for travelers to the region as well as for all bird lovers.

This is excellent guide book to have if ever you in southeat asia.

2 out of 5 stars Not the book for the serious birder.......2003-04-19

While it is nice to see the birds in the flesh with real-life pictures of them, it is certainly not pratical for use in the field.

Some of the pictures are poorly taken and it is highly difficult if not impossible to identify certain birds. Some of the images are back-lit, giving a silhouette of the bird!

There is no proper classification and very little info given of the birds - how the juveniles look like, breeding plumage, male/female plumage etc.

I suppose it is a good book for the casual birder who would like to know what's chirping outside his apartment window or chalet in the wilderness. It also comes with some interesting information on where to go birding to catch wetland or passerine birds etc.

I must commend Strange though for all his efforts into going into the field to capture these pictures - all pictures in the book were taken by Strange - good job Strange!
