When Gianni Versace was shot dead outside his Miami villa on July 15, 1997, few believed that his fashion empire would survive. The chutzpah and flamboyance of Versace the fashion house seemed inseparable from Versace the man. And yet, a year later, Versace remained buoyant, its reputation and market position if anything enhanced by its creator's tragic fate.

This book goes some way toward explaining why. From his first 1980 collection, Versace cannily engaged a great photographer, Richard Avedon, who stylishly wedded his designs to a potent blend of celebrity, beauty, flesh, sex, and humor, which became instantly identifiable as Versace--poised, pansexual, tongue firmly in sculptured cheek. Whether in trademarked group shots of intricately entangled supermodels, Stallone nude and stone-faced, Elton gleeful in drag, or Bon Jovi proudly strutting his buff bod, Avedon equals Versace--to the extent that he can show Kate Moss, without a stitch of Versace (or anything else), and we know that she is thinking Versace. This gorgeous volume collects more than 170 photographs, and gives us, as it justly proclaims: "A glimpse of the impassioned shameful opulent titillating sewmanship of that daredevil magician of art and artifice who was and will always be Gianni Versace." --Alan Stewart

      Book Description

This book is almost completely full-bleed photographs taken by Richard Avedon of the Versace collections. The book is divided into 8 sections, by themes: Rembrance of Flings Past; Lust & Found; That Obscure Object of Desire; Gathering Moss; Rocks and Other Hard Places; The Way of All Mesh; Look Homeward Angel; and A Quick Stitch in Time. The sequencing of the photographs makes for an amusing, sexy presentation.

This is an archive of the advertisments and editorials for Versace. His pictures, like his clothes are refreshing, and surprising. Those who buy this book will encounter some director's cut images. However, "The Naked" lacks the better Versace campigns. Those familiar with Versace photographs will wonder why they did not include the better shots... Some pictures are amazing, yet, some didn't have the luster. And unfortunately, the bad outnumber the good. With the price, it is still a good buy but leaves you craving more.

                      Book Description

This brilliant history of warfare is the first to approach the modern era from a global perspective. Investigating both land and sea warfare, Jeremy Black examines weaponry, tactics, strategy, and resources as well as the political, social, and cultural impact of conflict.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-31

I'll begin by saying that I don't understand how anyone can award this book anything less than 5 stars. Some books you read simply to get information but this is one book that is a pleasure to read. Aside from being well-researched and well-written it is pleasing to the eye as well, with many interesting illustrations. The book covers warfare around the world in the period from 1450-2000. It's meant to be a survey rather than a comprehensive account of the history of warfare over the past 550 years. If it were comprehensive it would probably require something like 10 volumes at a thousand pages each! Instead what Black manages to convey to the reader is the idea that while Europe was evolving, there were major developments taking place in other continents and regions around the world. He also demonstrates that for much of this period European nations were not the pre-eminent military powers around the world. The Chinese, and the Mughals in India, were both expanding and conquering neighbouring territories as were the Ottoman Turks. It has the effect of enlarging your point of view and understanding that the military supremacy of the West was not the foregone conclusion that some historians have made it out to be. Well worth getting if you come across it.

4 out of 5 stars The Evolution not Revolution in Military Affairs.......2002-10-19

First of all this is not a book for the casual reader of military history. Although it reads as if it was designed to be used in a university history course, it assumes a fairly extensive knowledge of major world military events throughout the period under review. For the more knowledgeable reader of historical and contemporary military affairs, Jeremy Black offers a less radical view of the Revolution in Military Affairs based on a European-centric view of events. The strength of this book is that is broadens the scope of major military evolutionary trends to address the impact of geography, political, scientific, and demographic influences. Mr. Black strives and generally succeeds in bringing a "balanced" view of why military "revolutions" did and did not occur. I highly recommend this book to readers who have extensive background in both military and general world history. For more casual readers I recommend having a copy of R. Ernest and Trevor N. Dupuy's Encyclopedia of Military History and a good historical atlas for ready reference. Well done and recommended.

3 out of 5 stars quantity but not quality.......2001-12-12

I read this because of a History of War class in college. Black does a remarkable job of making mention of lots of conflicts that most people have never heard of before. But he jumps around alot, mentioning some people and wars very briefly and totally out of nowhere and often jumping around a bit. If you a want a very summarized look at military history in the last 550 years, this is it. Just don't expect details or alot of coherency.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on military history I,ve read thus far........1998-08-24

War and the World is an extremely well researched and informative account of military history that is truly universal in scope. Jeremy Black has wisely expanded his focus beyond the constricting binds of Eurocentrism to produce a work of scholarship that douments, in detail, military developments in parts of the world ignored by conventional military history. His assertion that future domination by Europeans of most of the world after the fifteenth century was by no means a foregone conclusion is a legitimate one in light of the opposition they would receive from equally determined, aggressive and expansionist non-Europeans. He explores the limitations of European power, expounding on their powerful naval capabilty, but emphasizing their inabilty to be more then a significant presence beyond the coastal regions of places like West Africa. Expansionist peoples like the Dzhungars of central Asia, the Fulani of west Africa and the Moroccans (notably in the context of their little known, but spectacular defeat of the Portugeuse at the battle of Alcazarquivir in 1578) are mentioned, their successes or failures examined. In other military history texts, they would have been outright ignored. It is because of this kind of depth to the author's research that War and the World was a far more satisfying read then John Keegan's A History of Warfare. While War and the World spans a period of history from 1450-2000, I hope that Jeremy Black, should he decide to write another book on world military history, will extend his chronological scope to encompass warfare from the dawn of man onward. It would be interesting to read his perspectives on the Romans, Mongols and other aggressive peoples who forged bloody niches in the pre-modern age.

                              Book Description

The Diezmo tells the incredible story of the Mier Expedition, one of the most absurd and tragic military adventures in the history of Texas -- a country and a state, as Rick Bass writes, that was "born in blood." In the early days of the Republic of Texas, two young men, wild for glory, impulsively volunteer for an expedition Sam Houston has ordered to patrol the Mexican border. But their dreams of triumph soon fade into prayers for survival, and all that is on their minds is getting home and having a cool drink of water. After being captured in a raid on the Mexican village of Mier, escaping, and being recaptured, the men of the expedition are punished with the terrible diezmo, in which one man in ten is randomly chosen to die. The survivors end up in the most dreaded prison in Mexico. There they become pawns in an international chess game to decide the fate of Texas, and with their hopes of release all but extinguished, they make one desperate, last-ditch effort to escape.

                              4 out of 5 stars Relentless.......2006-12-23

Bass recounts the story of a troop of sometimes reluctant, but always relentless men ostensibly fighting for their new nation of Texas. The historical incident, obscure to most of us, is well known to Texans, the retaliation for the Battle of San Jacinto. We come to know what drives some of them and the regrets of others. Mostly, we marvel at their capacity for survival. When everything is taken away from them; when they live day after day in toil and torture, infested with an army of lice and tested by disease after disease, they still have the ability to experience the small joy that comes with the minutest reprieve.

There is little joy in reading the book, though the author presents the story as well we could expect. Like castor oil, though, it may be good for us to see those so eager for war get their wish, then regret it for every minute of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars You will be controlled by only the most civilized warfare..........2005-09-19

I was reluctant to continue after hearing some of the horrific deeds commited by the men who (after reading the dustjacket) I thought to be Texas heroes. But just as I was appalled I was mesmerized into reading throughout the night in hopes of learning how their fates played out. And as I write this just a few minutes later I am wondering how the survivors fared, the ones that were less critical to the story at hand but may have played a more powerful and less publicized role. Overall I recommend this to anyone with an interest in Texas...or history... or man in general.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent historical review (the book, not the review).......2005-08-19

I found this book to be an excellent historical novelation (or is it a novelation of a historic event)? Anyway, as someone who is familiar with Texas history, I still found much to admire about this novelisation (novelization?) of the Meir escapade, which I learned a lot about, in spite of my (supposed) knowledge of the story. It is made more interesting by the centering of the story on one fictional character, intermixed with real, historic figures. I would recommend the book highly to anyone wanting to learn about this tragic event in Texas history, as well as anyone wanting to read an exciting, bloody story in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Men will have war........2005-05-30

An absorbing account, written with much foreshadowing of an old man looking back upon the foolishness and stupidity of war. Comparisons with BLOOD MERIDIAN are natural, and here the message is quite the same, that men are addicted to war, that there is no glory in it, that stupidity and violence will continue to prevail.

Bass structures his narrative on the historical memoirs left us, which were biased and conflicting, but perhaps, as Cormac McCarthy might say, the truth of what did not happen may be about as true as what can be documented, the memories of men being uncertain and biased.

Some of the characters and scenes are imagined, but some characters such as Thomas Jefferson Green and William Fisher are historical. There is violence and gore in here, but it is not laid on. The author has an eye for the telling detail, as in this paragraph describing the commanders planning the invasion into Mexico:

"They sat in a circle of mismatched chairs. Green and Somervell's chairs were turned backwards so that they straddled them like horses. They leaned forward in the chairs, resting the weight of their torsos against the backs, as if even here they intended to somehow charge into battle."

The prose is nothing like McCarthy, of course, but is sparkling and fresh and goes down like a clean drink of water. Typical Rick Bass prose. The title refers to the black bean lottery that Mexicans used to determine which prisoners were shot and which survived. This may seem too obscure for browsing bookbuyers, but the attractive dustjacket may encourage them to look more closely.

Rick Bass lists his sources on the Acknowledgments Page in the rear of the book, so as to alert scholars who hunger for more details. The author says that he wrote it as our troops were charging into Baghdad--suggesting that his emotions then may have influenced the book.

However he came to write it, I'm glad that he did. This book is short, just 208 pages, but exactly the length needed to tell the story of these soldiers of misfortune. It is a treasure. Bravo!

Early Tejano Ranching: Daily Life At Ranchos San Jose And El Fresnillo by Andres Saenz (Professor of History, Austin Community College, Austin, Texas) is the story of the author's family (the Saenzes and the Lopezes) who established San Jose and El Fresnillo during the 1850s and 1860s. Drawn and composed from interviews, historical records, visits to historical sites, and more, Early Tejano Ranching presents a fascinating picture of life in the past, the daily work of ranching, the labor of self-sufficient families who struggled to surviving against drought, wild animals, and even Indian attacks. Early Tejano Ranching is solid and highly recommended representation reflecting the history and heritage of Texas. Also highly recommended is Professor Saenz's earlier work, Tejano Empire: Life On The South Texas Ranchos (0890968349)
