Buy Jack Hamm's book instead.......2001-10-10
Since I had found Bammes' "The Artist's Guide to Human Anatomy" helpful, I ordered his animal anatomy book without ever having seen it. What a mistake. There were a few well done, loose, expressive drawings, but most of the drawings that purported to be realistic were badly drawn. I'm not talking about niceties such as line quality, or rendering of surface details either. There were gross perspective and proportional errors in far too many of the author's drawings! Buy Hamm's "How to Draw Animals" instead. It may have a dated look, but the information is still first rate, and the drawings are accurate.

Idiosyncratic, not a book to get as a stand-alone reference.......2001-03-24
Bammes was a professor of Anatomical Drawing in the Academy For Fine Arts in Dresden and his mastery of drawing and structure is obvious from many of the reproductions. He shows us a very mechanistic approach to understanding the structure of a given animal which is in stark contrast to the loose, expressive and often beautiful sketches and finished drawings.
The book is surprisingly text-heavy for a topic of this nature, especially for a book only 140-odd pages long, often explaining in words what I feel would have been better expressed with more drawings and diagrams.
It's subdivided into 9 chapters, not all of which necessarily make sense in terms of their separation. The first, "Basic Principles In Drawing Animals", is only six pages long, and doesn't really serve as much of an introduction and would have been better suited combined with chapter 3 on proportion. Chapter 2 is also an odd choice this early, "Body Cover Textures"; apart from the fact that it is very superficial, I think it would have worked much better placed near the end before presenting fully-worked drawings as a sort of tie-up of all the information presented to that point. Chapter 3 is also quite superficial, with only basic diagrammatical side views of a lion, dog, horse, cow and chimpanzee and what to me least is a pointless comparison to the form of a human bent over into an quadruped stance! Chapter 4 is titled "Repose And Motion" and is a good basic introduction to movement and stance, but again I felt it was over-simplified and could have included more examples. The fifth and sixth chapters cover the form of the hind leg and the foreleg respectively, making a very valid comparison of the structure of these between different species. Chapter 7 is on the form of the trunk, starting with a comparison of vertebral columns and then shifting abruptly to sketches of lions in repose before going back to sketches and then to almost-pointless comparisons of the thorax, isolated from the rest of the form. Chapter 8 is on head forms, and here the author includes a number of detailed skull drawings and anatomical views, with some skillful simplifications of the overall forms into broader masses but unless one wants to draw animal skeletons I can't see the real point of this. Sure, simplifying form is one of the basic tenets of drawing today but surely this is better suited to the outside structure, not internal details that have only limited bearing on the final form. The final chapter is titled "Coming To Terms With The Whole Animal Figure" and you will no doubt be surprised to discover there are only four drawings, all with simplified forms, with 12 sketches, some of which are extremely loose.
I'm sure if one were willing to read through the text completely and follow the accompanying drawings it all might make some sort of sense, but I found it disjointed and a bit aimless in its approach. Overall I was extremely disappointed with the book as a whole and would only recommend getting it as an adjunct to other, better, books and even then only if you got it cheap like I did.
AN ESENTIAL ARTISTIC REFERENCE TO THE ANIMALS ANATOMY.......2000-01-29
I have a Germany edition of this book, and want to found a Spanish or English translation. This book seems at least so good as the Gottfried's Human Anatomy. Please, give me information to get them. I'm Antonio, and my e-mail is abduran@cica.es

Book Description
Most Americans today view mines as little more than ugly scars on the landscape, places with no connection to an American way of life. This creative new work will force many to rethink that impression: after an introduction to the history of mining in America, the authors present eight visual and historical essays about diverse sites across the nation, each of which reveals mines not simply as physical degradations but as evolving cultural artifacts of the American landscape.
Customer Reviews:
Awe-inspiring trip underground!.......2006-03-03
Peter Goin is becoming one of my most favorite photographers, able to evoke the same emotions in landscapes that Sebastiao Salgado evokes with his portraits.
Mr. Goin compares and contrasts the state and evolution of various mines across the country with his contemporary photographs of mines taken from roughly the same locations as vintage photographs. Particularly fascinating is his chapter on the Bingham Canyon copper pit mine, tracing its evolution from turn-of-the-century immigrant copper town to its current position as the world's largest man-made hole.
Also of note is his exploration of American Flats mine and its present-day existance as a de-facto "autonomous zone" where all forms of "outlaw culture" is practiced.
This book is a must for all persons interested in urban exploration and industrial processes, as well as those of us who are fascinated by the ways man changes the world around him.

This Tom Clancy real-life military thriller is more nuanced than his novels, because its object is not simply to dramatize armed conflict but to relate the life lessons of his source, jet-pilot-turned-Desert-Storm-air-commander General Chuck Horner. Horner is no war cheerleader like General "Buck" Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove. He loathes the arrogance of the backwards, nuke-happy Strategic Air Command and the madly out-of-touch Vietnam War planner Robert McNamara. McNamara confesses his folly in two books, Argument Without End and In Retrospect, but Horner's you-are-there account more vividly demonstrates Vietnam's grim lessons. He flew an F-105 Thunderbird "Thud" fighter in the Wild Weasels, the unit with the highest medals-per-aircrew ratio, knew pilots who were stoned to death by villagers, and realized all the bombing did zero good. "All we really had to do was befriend Ho," says Horner sensibly. "Seems he wasn't part of a monolithic Communist plot, and hated the Chinese more than anything else." Horner is savvy about the screwups, the achievements, and the political maneuvering in and after the Gulf War, as leaders and branches of service battled for PR victories. His idea of a hero is Boomer McBroom's pilot Captain Gentner Drummond, who won a Flying Cross medal for refusing AWACS orders to down a jet that turned out to be a Saudi ally. Horner thinks the interservice and international cooperation in the Gulf War was way better than in Vietnam, but there's ample room for improvement. The action scenes aren't quite as brilliant as those in Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, but Clancy fans will find plenty to admire. Horner's improbable survival of a 150-m.p.h. near-crash in Libya in 1962 belongs in a Tom Clancy film. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
The second in an extraordinary series of nonfiction books by the #1 bestselling author--a look deep into the art of war as seen through the eyes of four of America's outstanding commanders.
Written with armor and infantry General Fred Franks, Jr., Into the Storm won Clancy unanimous praise for its masterful blend of military history, biography, tactical analysis, and unique insight into the art and practice of leadership. Every Man a Tiger soars above it, into the sky.
General Chuck Horner was the right man in the right place at the right time. Combining a broad experience of all aspects of aerial warfare with a deep respect for and knowledge of Arab culture, Horner commanded the U.S. and allied air assets during Desert Shield and Desert Storm--the forces of a dozen nations--and was responsible for the design and execution of one of the most devastating air campaigns in history. Never before has the Gulf air war and its planning, a process filled with controversy and stormy personalities, been revealed in such rich, provocative detail. Beyond that, however, Every Man a Tiger is the story of two revolutions: of how a service damaged by Vietnam reinvented itself through vision, determination, and brutal-ly hard work--in Horner's words, "We had to learn how to be an Air Force all over again"--and of how war changed fundamentally in the last decade of this century, not only in the new dominance of air power but in all aspects. It is a story of speed, accuracy, efficiency, decentralization, information, and initiative, as well as smoke, fear, courage, and blood. It is a front-row seat to a man, an institution, a war, and a way of war that together make this an instant classic of military history. Index.
Customer Reviews:
Horner 1, Clancy 0.......2007-03-22
I recomend this book because of Gen. Horner and in spite of Mr. Clancy. (I think "The Hunt For Red October" is great but its been down-hill from there...) I'm sure Mr. Clancy brought organizing talent and expertise in formatting chapters, paragraphs and pages to this book, but I felt I could tell when Horner, or Clancy, was the primary writer, and I'd have been happier with the General's own voice the whole time.
General Horner comes across as a full character, with a story to tell. I'd rate his part 5 stars.
The "there I was" parts about planning and carrying-out the air-war in Desert Shield and Desert Storm are illuminating, and the description of the troubled USAF trying to find purpose, meaning and funding, after Viet Nam, are interesting. But the heart of the book for me are Horner's two tours in Viet Nam. Actually, in Thailand, but over Viet Nam when flying. By the end of his first tour, Horner realizes that the USA, his country, and the USAF, his service, doesn't actually want to win in Viet Nam, and isn't willing to do what it takes to win. Its not the left wing media, or the protesters, its the chain of command, from Johnson down, and he makes this point directly.
And then he goes back for a second tour, flying Wild Weasel missions at great personal risk. Why? He says its because this was "the war he had". He doesn't dwell on it, but it seems that having signed up, and being willing to serve, so far, he's willing to risk his life to do what he's been trained to do, in the persuit of foolish, pointless, even counter-productive things. I'd say immoral things, once you know you can't win, many might disagree.
But there, in a real officer's words, more or less, is why our nation must take (more) care in choosing its leaders, and give great thought to its citizens in uniform, volunteer or otherwise. People, all people, our people, are amazing, and they will try to do every job they are given to the best of their ability.
Give them a stupid job that hasn't been well thought out and they will die trying to make it happen. If its a military job and it involves killing, they'll kill. Not from blood lust or to be evil, but because that's what they've been asked to do.
Its no use blaming the soldiers- after a very brief time at war, soldiers have more in common with each other, with the soldiers of the other side, than they do with the folks at home. Its the leadership, which, in a democracy, is US, which is responsible. We cannot casually send out the Marines, or the 82nd Airborne, or the carrier battle group, and assume all is well. We have to be damn sure we know what we want before we ask our service people to risk their lives for it. They may do what we ask, and it may not work, it may not be the right thing, it may not be what we actually want.
This book is rather technical (about the level of "The Naval Institute Procedings", NY Times or Aviation Week, more so than "Air Force Review" or one of Clancy's books. Having a background in the subject helps, having an interest in the subject is a must.
Its hard to keep reading when Horner steps out and Clancy lets his fingers sing on the keyboard. But its worth it, at least through the first third, and after that, its like "Day of the Jackel"- you know how it ends, but you want to know this version anyway. Skim if you have to.
This is a far *better* book than Richard Hallinon's "Storm over Iraq" (Hallinon, the "Offical USAF Historian", is too rah-rah, with too little critical thinking or self awareness) and provides an interesting 50,000 foot view to contrast with, for example, "Warthogs", the first-person, 15,000 feet and under, stories of A-10 pilots & squadrons.
Every Man A Tiger.......2007-03-19
Great book. General Chuck Horner is a real character and I enjoyed his insights immensely. Tom Clancy does a great job explaining military technology although some of his graphs' Xs & Ys axises needed to be labeled. Overall a great book. I enjoyed it more that "Enter the Storm" which was based on Fred Franks.
A Warrior's Unique Story.......2006-06-01
The best part of Every Man a Tiger is the compelling voice of General Horner revealing the inside story of a revolutionary air campaign as it unfolded. General Horner, the man, the tiger, allows the reader to climb inside his head as he choreographs the human aspect of critical air operations while managing a multi-national coalition, freely admitting that the burden of failure rested with him. Indeed, destiny put the right man at the right place at the right time. All his prior training, assignments, and experiences in Vietnam and the Middle East coalesced during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In future conflicts, we will need tough, compassionate, selfless, military leaders like Chuck Horner if we are to overcome the daunting challenges that lay ahead. Read it.
Great book for those in the armed forces.......2005-04-25
I've read other negative reviews on this book but it was definitely worth the read, and I'd highly suggest it to anyone in the armed forces or anyone intrigued by their inner workings. I doubt someone with little interest in the Air Force would really get much out of this book but, like I said, if you are in the armed forces you'll love it and it'll make a lot of sense to you.
Excellent.......2003-04-16
This is on the U.S Air Force's list of recommended reading for a reaon. If you have an interest in what the USAF is and how it does what it does, this book is a must.

Modern warfare.......2006-11-10
Brightly written, it let the reader to look at the man responsible of the air offensive in First Iraq War. How a man can learn all the stuff needed to coordinate such an effort? Tom Clancy and Chuck Horner give us a glance of the different areas a General has to cover to bring a mision to a succesful end, including a very important one, to know the strong and weak points of your allies and of course thats of your enemy. It also makes recounts of the early years when Gen. Horner (Ret.) learn the basics and conducted missions in Vietnam and most important how that experience lead him to plan and coordinate the efforts in Iraq war in a totally different way. At the end the authors give a little view of the possible evolution of the military in USA and the importance of the air and space programs to the future of armed conflicts.
The book reveals also a the light side of Chuck Horner's personality and the importance he give to personal relations including the knowledge and experience he acquired when working in different Arab countries.
I learn a lot of the develompent of the military technologies, warfare and of course how a combat pilot becomes a leader for his men as well as for the men of other allied countries.
It actually is an easy to read book. Difficult to stop reading it, once you begin.

Book Description
There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.
The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.
100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification.
Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.
Our partner,
Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

A field guide, but not a guidebook.......2007-07-23
This book has beautiful color photos, but is not really a guidebook for locating Minnesota species. This is more of a field guide (which I already own several) and wasn't very helpful in finding the Minnesota specialties. If someone is new to birding, this is a great book. However, for the serious birder aiming to add new species indigenous to Minnesota, this is not a guidebook with locations and maps.
