5 out of 5 stars The Mistress of Pen & Ink!.......2005-03-25

This book not only has great ideas for sketchbook journals, but wonderful detailed lessons on pen & ink work and watercolor techniques. I wouldn't say it was directed at beginning artists, thought. This is more geared to drawing & painting than actual journaling.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and nice tips..........2004-12-31

I got this book for Christmas and it was a rather nice gift. The copy that was sent to me was a bit imperfect on the cover but I was much pleased with the content. The author presents good tips on how to choose a journal type, the right medium for you and adequate tools, type of drawing, how to draw basic forms and more sophisticated images, what details you should write on your journal, etc.

The images in the book are very nice and they vary in sophistication so they are not intimidating. Even if you really don't know how to draw, there are very nice ideas on how to start, for example use plant leaves to make prints and add details with pencils, paints, etc. Another great thing is that the author advises you to research the subjects of your drawings further, instead of just drawing them.

Overall, I was rather pleased. Now, if only this book would come alive and send me out the door...

3 out of 5 stars Not the 'Journal'.......2002-09-22

Really, this book is good. But to tell you the truth, there's not
much of a 'journal' enthusiasm than I wanted. If you're looking
for how to draw, what you need type of book, than this will be
a good book for you. I recommend Pencil Dancing or Making Pearls.

3 out of 5 stars May be inspiring to you, but it didn't inspire me at all.......2002-08-20

This is more of a "how to draw and paint" book than about keeping a journal. It is packed with plenty of drawings in mixed media from pencil to pen to watercolor and a blend of all of them.

I must say the book is attractive. The format is like a wider-than-long sketchbook, bound attractively with a wide hessian cloth band. But the drawings didn't do anything for me most of the time, though the butterflies were nicely done. There is a very handy schematic for sewing a field drawing and painting carryall to carry your book and implements with you in the field. That was a nice touch.

I already have a library of art instruction books, and that wasn't what I expected from the title. This book just doesn't have enough "journal" content for me, nor do I like the style of drawings so this isn't my cup of tea. However, you might like the style and the art lessons, so your opinion may differ completely from mine.

5 out of 5 stars truly a life enhancing experience.......2002-05-06

I was fascinated by the style and piercing grab Claudia Nice arrived at in her book "How To Keep A Sketchbook Journal" and added some of her suggestions to my own Journaling.
It is amazing but some events I "Liked" became events I "Love"
now that they have been recorded, illustrated and enhanced with the further insights that seem to tease out or arrive when you revisit the past.(Suggestion: Leave space for new insights and spantaneous arrisings of surprising feelings and sensations as your penetrations into your own life take on a new life of their own ) If you connect meditation with your journaling new space opens up and it is like having a Parallel Universe to be alive in. Truly a life enhancing experience...
You owe yourself this books enhancement to the life you own.
When you get the knack of it every day can be an adverturous trip that is worth writing about.
Seems like there is immesurable meaning and depth to life once you start looking.
    Thank you Claudia ...

Most of us know the Salvation Army from its fundraising efforts and philanthropic programs, but the $2 billion-a-year transcontinental institution, now serving more than 30 million people with a vastly underpaid and overworked staff, is also a model business structure. Under a title taken from the description applied to it by management guru Peter Drucker, The Most Effective Organization in the U.S. outlines the fundamental tenets that the group has prospered under since its founding in the mid- to late 1800s. Written by former National Commander Robert A. Watson and freelancer Ben Brown, the book details eight principles that allow the Army to do so much with so little: focus on "a purpose that transcends quarterly earnings"; make "what you do serve human needs"; stay publicly accountable to visible standards; encourage feedback and act upon it; "invest real power and real responsibility" in top personnel; "accept the inevitability of change"; take calculated risks; and motivate employees by ensuring their jobs are both valuable and enjoyable. Some readers may not be comfortable with the organization's overt ties to Christian teachings, but few can argue with the success it consistently enjoys. --Howard Rothman

          Book Description

The book about not just business but the meaning of life ... a guide for being the best at what you do and doing it with a sense of purpose that connects with something larger than yourself ...

For many people, The Salvation Army is most visible between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's when its officers, soldiers and volunteers, in the ubiquitous Kettle Campaign, make music and collect money for good works. Few realize, however, that the Army is much, much more than this one effort and is in fact a powerhouse of an organization. None other than Peter Drucker called it "the most effective organization in the U.S." Not the most effective nonprofit, but "the most effective organization." Quite a compliment from the world's most preeminent management thinker, especially when you consider that he is comparing The Salvation Army to world-class corporations like General Electric, IBM and Johnson &Johnson.

Now, Robert Watson, the Army's recently retired national commander, is ready to share the Army's secrets about organization, strategy, and acting with a sense of mission. With its 9,500 centers of operation, $2 billion in annual revenues, and 32 million clients served in every zip code in America, The Salvation Army is the model for doing business with a purpose. As Peter Drucker says, "no one even comes close to it with respect to clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication and putting money to maximum use":
          * Clarity of mission: What you can learn from the Army's laser-like focus of evaluating everything it does in terms of its mission of preaching the gospel and meeting human needs without discrimination.
          * Ability to innovate: How The Salvation Army's investment in people gets incredible returns and why it as much venture capitalist as charity.
          * Measurable results: Learn The Army's unique ways of setting, monitoring and celebrating the achievement of measurable goals so you, too, can say, "look, we promised we would do this and we delivered."
          * Dedication: How the Army accomplishes so much with such a small cadre of officers.
          * Putting Money to Maximum Use: What you can learn from The Army's bare skeleton of a national organization in terms of making the most of your resources and making all of your operations self-sufficient.

By demonstrating the power of a sense of purpose combined with organizational effectiveness, this remarkable book has something essential to say to all executives, entrepreneurs, managers, and anyone with the ambition to bring people together to reach a goal.

          5 out of 5 stars Leadership.......2003-01-15

This is actually an interesting book. It tells the reader how the Salvation Army is an effective orgainzation. I bought this book for a college management class assignment on leadership and found the book to be very helpful.

          4 out of 5 stars Food for thought, not a how-to guide.......2002-02-01

Disclaimer: I was a civilian employee of The Salvation Army (i.e., I am not an officer or a Salvationist) for five-and-a-half years, and I am an academic sociologist by training.

This book is not a cookbook for effective leadership. You can't read this book, apply a couple of techniques, and expect to be as effective as The Salvation Army is at raising funds, running programs, and improving communities.

If you are interested in effective leadership and you're willing to reflect on your practices and, more importantly, the principles underlying your business and/or management style, this is a book you should consider reading. If you're looking for some sort of quick-fix to improve your own management, look elsewhere.

Instead, this book provides several general guidelines with supporting commentary drawn largely from Watson's experience as an officer with (and ultimately the National Commander, or Commissioner, of) The Salvation Army. According to Watson, the central tenet of The Salvation Army's leadership effectiveness is to, "engage the spirit."

The remainder of the book elaborates on this point with other related ideas (i.e., put people in your purpose; embody the brand; lead by listening; spread the responsibility, share the profits; organize to improvise; act with audacity; and make joy count). Watson and Brown don't tell you specifically *how* to do these things, but provide examples of how The Salvation Army and, in some cases, other companies and executives accomplish these things.

To be clear, the book isn't about The Salvation Army itself or its operations. You can gain insight into some of The Army's programs, but they vary too much from one community to the next to get a sense of the massive scope of what they do.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging the Spirit, Mind, Body, Family, and Community!.......2001-11-07

The Salvation Army's role and effectiveness may be the best-kept secret that is out in the open for all to see.

Reading this book is a deeply moving spiritual experience. " . . . [T]he real secret of our success is getting them [those the Salvation Army serves] to accept responsibility for integrating their hearts, their minds, their souls with transcendent purpose."

In grading this book, I was most heavily influenced by how much it added to my knowledge of the Salvation Army (clearly a five star operation) as an organization, and its key leadership and management principles. Like most people, I mainly know about the Salvation Army through tiny glimpses of its work as seen in good neighborhoods (while most of the work takes place in more challenging environments) . . . rather than as a case history in organizational effectiveness. Now, as a result of reading this book, I can see the whole a little and see it as being much more than the sum of the pieces.

Compared to the potential to tell the Salvation Army's story, however, you may find that this book could be improved upon. I certainly did. The examples from businesses, sports, and music as well as the many references to famous management books usually just stole space, in my judgment, from telling more about the Salvation Army. A more useful counterpoint in the book would have been to explain how for-profit organizations fare in performing many of the same tasks that the Salvation Army does.

I'm also not sure that the book totally captured the full lesson of the power of the Salvation Army's mission: Potential and actual volunteers and donors, those who need the Salvation Army's services, the families of those who need the Salvation Army's services, and the communities in which the Salvation Army operates (regardless of religious faith and personal beliefs) find the Salvation Army's purposes of principles to be inspiring and worthy of both active and moral support. In this dimension, the closest I can think of another organization for its mission's powerful appeal is Habitat for Humanity.

As a student of leadership and management, I came away totally awed by thinking about how you provide services over 30 million people with around 5500 executives and managers (about a third of whom are "retired") in so many different, difficult activities: alcohol and drug rehabilitation; rehabilitating prisoners; helping homeless people get back to normal living; community recreation; disaster relief; rebuilding communities after disasters; and providing for the poor. The Salvation Army takes justifiable interest in measuring how effectively it performs these tasks compared to other organizations. The comparisons are usually very favorable. To put this in perspective, did you know that the Salvation Army had its first portable canteen on the scene within 20 minutes after the Oklahoma City bombing? Within minutes, three canteens were there.

Then, I was totally flattened to realize that those who run all of these activities must raise the funds for them locally. Beyond a little start-up money (which must be repaid), each effort must be financially self-sustaining. So when a need arises, the leaders must be serving the need and raising the money at the same time. Somehow, it all comes together.

Commissioner (retired U.S. national commander) Robert Watson describes these successes to the way the Salvation Army's mission engages the spirit of people. "We must always be mission driven." "If a proposal doesn't advance our twofold mission, we're not interested in it."

          The mission is:

"The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church."

"Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God."

"Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination."

This mission is based on the injunction to teach in Matthew 28:19 and to serve in Matthew 25:40. These are two inseparable obligations. Yet the book is full of examples of those who are not observers of the Christian religion who support the work of the Salvation Army.

In pursuing the mission, the Salvation Army looks for holistic solutions. As William Booth, the Salvation Army's founder, said, "Take the slums out of people." For homeless people, this may mean providing them a place to sleep, helping them overcome any drinking or drug problems, making clean clothes available, helping them polish up skills to apply for jobs, assist with learning to read better, and rekindling the spirit of wanting to take charge of their lives again. At the same time, their spiritual needs and self-worth need to be nurtured just as much.

The holistic solutions carry over to building its staff. Many are sons and daughters of staff members or families that received aid in the past, as was true of Commissioner Watson. Both the wife and husband share a job. They both wear the uniform, and follow the rules. Assignments are made in ways to be best for the family and the Salvation Army. The children are often enrolled in the same youth programs that serve the poor in the same community.

"God, please make us worthy of such trust!"

My favorite quote from the book is that "you can be forgiven a great deal for honest mistakes committed in the act of trying to save the world."

Does your work reflect your spiritual values? If not, have you considered taking on volunteer work that would? Who knows where it could lead?

As the book's final point reminds us, be sure you are having "the fun of work."

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book!.......2003-01-30

This is a terrible book. Like many other books about disipline, the philosophy in this book seems to be summed up in the following sentence:

"You (the parent) have more power then your child, so use this power to make the child stop whining."

According to this book, the way to carry out this power struggle out varies from situation to situation and uses tactics like time outs and rewards. Most of the solutions that I read in this book are really just power struggles.

I have personally found that using these power tactics like these make everyone upset (including me!). I might get my way in the short term, but my daughter isn't too happy about it and I don't feel good about the way I treated my daughter.

So, how do you stop whining? I would suggest reading either Gordon's book (Parent Effectiveness Training) or How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Faber and Mazlish (or better yet, read them both). These books present a way to solve your problems and, at the same time, treat your children like real human beings instead of pawns that you can exert your power over.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent should read this book!.......2000-07-14

A quick and easy read (my wife and I read it together in one sitting) that outlines a painfully simple yet amazingly effective strategy for ending whining and tantrums. We had a two year old who was about to drive us both into therapy with constant tantrums, testing, and controlling behavior. Things got worse for about a week, but we stuck with it. He is now a totally different kid. Try it with your "high spirited" child.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Mother, Even Those Without Whiners.......1998-12-22

I have two children ages 3 and 4 1/2. This book gives wonderful ideas for better ways of dealing with whiny communication. I found some relief in many parts of the book that empathize with those of us who are just plain tired of hearing ourselves scream day in and day out. This book should give other mothers a sense that they are not monsters for feeling angry, resentful or distant from their child when this whining behavior occurs. It gives us some much needed insight to reasons why the child may be whiny and positive ways to deal with it. My little guy is learning quickly that whining does not produce his desires, but that his "big boy" voice gets my attention and praise more easily. There is so much great advice in this book I may read it cover to cover again so I don't forget it all! A nice thing is, it doesn't cover just whining behavior or the preschool ages, there is great advice here to apply to grade schoolers as well. This is at least my fourth book this year on child behavior and it is excellent. Kudos to Child magazine for addressing this subject in such detail. Personally, this is the kind of material high school juniors and seniors should have the option to learn in a classroom setting to better prepare them for the most important job they may ever have: parenting.

            Book Description

The rise of South Korea is one of the most unexpected and inspirational developments of the latter part of our century. A few decades ago, the Koreans were an impoverished, agricultural people. In one generation they came out of the fields and into Silicon Valley. In 1997, this powerhouse of a nation reeled and almost collapsed as a result of a weak financial system and heavily indebted conglomerates. The world is now watching to see whether the Koreans will be able to reform and continue their stunning growth.

Although Korea has only recently found itself a part of the global stage, it is a country with a rich and complex past. Early history shows that Koreans had a huge influence on ancient Japan, and their historic achievements include being the first culture to use metal movable type for printing books. However, much of their history is less positive; it is marred with political violence, poverty, and war-aspects that would sooner be forgotten by the Koreans, who are trying to focus on their promising future.

The fact that Korean history has eluded much of the world is unfortunate, but as Korea becomes more of a global player, understanding and appreciation for this unique nation has become indispensable.

In The Koreans, Michael Breen provides an in-depth portrait of the country and its people. an early overview of the nature and values of the Korean people provides the background for a more detailed examination of the complex history of the country, in particular its division into the Communist north and pro-Western south.

In this absorbing and enlightening account of the Koreans, Michael Breen provides compelling insight into the history and character of this fascinating nation.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on South Korean people and culture.......2007-10-03

Michael Breen does an excellent and hilarious job describing the South Koreans, their culture, habits, and history. This is simply the best and most accurate book on the South Korean people I've found. Everything he writes is not rosy and great, but his observations are spot on in my opinion, and I have lived in Korea for about 10 of the past 20 years.

Also, if you are looking to learn about North Korea this is not a good book since it focuses almost entirely on South Korea. Michael Breen also wrote the book "Kim Jong-Il: North Korea's Dear Leader", which I hoped would complement "The Koreans" but which, unfortunately, was a medicore book at best.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Background.......2007-08-06

This book provided an excellent series of insights into Koreans and their culture, exactly as the subtitle suggested. In many places I found myself nodding emphatically at the descriptions of Korean culture and personalities. I have passed this on to a friend interested in doing business in Korea, as I believe that it provides an excellent starting point.

The only weakness I felt, was that I would have liked to have seen more on 'Where Their Future Lies'.

            2 out of 5 stars very bias.......2007-06-11

I understand that he, as a journalist, have seen and experience much from the Korean life. However, the book is just full of sterotypes and negative image building, he includes a 10 page summary on Korean history and a personaly visit to a mountatin in seoul (which somehow validates that Korean history is fake). Although, he makes crucial points on business ethics and economic systems, the very purpose of the book seems to undermind the cultural and social aspects of Korea. He gives personal examples and "suggestions" on how Koreans live. I don't know about this book, but if you want to learn about any Korea or any country you should go there and live it. I find it a good easy read but it sounds like a another book written by a westerner bashing the east.

4 out of 5 stars A proper introduction for anyone interested in Korea.......2007-03-29

My interest in Korea stemmed from a possible job opportunity in the country. I had little to no knowledge about the country's history, it's people, or it's culture, and I knew I would need a book that could give me a proper introduction without overwhelming me. I selected this book, and I was not disappointed.

Breen is a self-educated man when it comes to Korea. His writing takes on a narrative tone that is both personal and candid, and I suspect that this is a direct influence of him being a journalist. After the first chapter, I was drawn into this world that was miles away from my own, and yet I felt as if I were visiting it personally thanks to Breen's descriptions and insights.

The only drawback of this book was the chapters dealing with business and economics. Though this is a very crucial aspect to Korean culture, the text tended to be heavier than previous chapters. The pages didn't turn as easy, and I believe that the reader would have been better served had she not been submerged into numbers, statistics, and percentages.

Other than this, Breen provides an excellent introduction into a country that most Americans know little about, and thanks to this book, I plan on investigating more on the topic.

4 out of 5 stars As accurate as one man's observations can be.......2006-09-06

This book is what it is -- a broad brushstroke of Korean society based on one man's experience. Breen's observations are insightful, entertaining and witty (as are all Englishmen?); however, at times he betrays a paternalistic attitude toward Korean society (as do all Englishmen?). This is not a scholarly book nor a history text (Hallelujah!), yet it provides a clear and concise account of Korean history. If you want a dissertation, go to a university. If you want a brief and readable introduction to Korean people, then start here. Just remember that stereotypes do not define everyone within a group, but often have an origin in truth.

Provides a thorough description of the role Jews played in the American Civil War, and proves that the contributions of these soldiers far exceeded what has been previously believed. The author meticulously documents Jewish fatalities in all the major Civil War battles, the places of final repose for these men, and the circumstances of their deaths and relevant documents. "Where They Lie" is an impressive and moving living document for these soldiers.

                              Book Description

Most birdhouses, according to "underground architect" Malcolm Wells, are "silly-looking boxes embarrassing us out of doors. We owe it to the Creator of the birds, if not the birds themselves, to give it our very best shot; to say, somehow, in human terms, what they say so movingly in grass and twigs and straw." The author has been giving it his best shot for over 40 years, creating little habitats of weathered wood that belong to and blend elegantly with the landscape. The 25 easy-to-follow designs presented here (with the author's humorous and philosophical asides) will make both birds and people happy.

I loved this book. Great designs. However, the following day I received in the mail the same book published with the title "Classic Architectural Birdhouses and Feeders." It's very annoying when authors publish the same material with different titles and cover designs.

3 out of 5 stars Good for inspiration, but not for beginners' guidance........2001-01-03

This book has some novel and interesting ideas for breaking out of the classical design mold which might be boring to some people. However, contrary to the claim on the backcover that it contains "...easy-to-follow construction drawings even the most hesiteant amateur will be moved to build...", the designs really require the skills of a moderately experienced carpenter or cabinetmaker to follow. If you're already experienced in woodworking and reading design plans, then the diagrams may appear to be "elegantly simple". However, to a construction novice like myself, the designs will be daunting. The book is worth the price just to get some nice new design ideas, but don't expect it to be a beginner's guide to construction.

4 out of 5 stars Creative, But Not Technical.......2000-06-12

Once you plow through the diatribe condemming man for destroying the bird's environment, there are a lot of creative ideas here if you want to build birdhouses and nesting platforms. The book is illustrated with freehand drawings that can be hard to follow, but this is not meant to be a book of plans, more as an inspiration to the creative.

There is a brief chart showing the diameter of entrance hole for a few species, but it is not as complete as other sources. He does not get into any great detail about where to mount houses, proper interior sizes or spacing for the different species.

Most of his designs are for pole mounted houses and he gives some creative ideas for poles. Several ideas are for wall mounted houses. He does have a few designs for hanging houses. One of the more interesting houses is a pole mounted "earth sheltered" nesting platform.

If you want more technical information, I'd suggest Scott D. Campbell's "The Complete Book of Birdhouse Construction for Woodworkers" (available from Amazon.com.) Campbell's book is an excellent companion to Well's book and a basic technical reference for building birdshouses. You can modify the creative designs in Well's book to conform to the researched standards in Cambell's book.
