This unique urban research project examines the often overlooked areas known as "the barrios," "shantytowns," or "slums" and assesses their validity as an architectural phenomenon in their own right.

The hills outside Caracas are dotted with transient, dilapidated structures which are home to thousands of people who create their own socioeconomic environment, one which has a unique place in the city's infrastructure. This publication can be understood as a handbook of informal urban and cultural practice. Its validity extends far beyond Caracas and encompasses nearly all Latin American metropolises. Its essays question the value of traditional Western-style socioeconomic and socio-political structures, present a new form of urbanism as a subject for discussion, and show the need for a profound change in our understanding of urban culture, especially in today's era, which is characterized by increasing insecurity and uncertainty. This project was jointly initiated by the Cultural Foundation of Germany and the "Urban Think Tank" in Caracas, Venezuela.

Gio Ponti was not only an architect but a poet, painter, polemicist, and designer of exhibitions, theater costumes, Venini glassware, Arthur Krupp tableware, Cassina furniture, lighting fixtures, and ocean liner interiors. He is perhaps best known as the architect of Milan's Pirelli tower, at one time the tallest building in Europe, and for his "Super-leggera" chair which was first manufactured in the '50s and has become classic because of its almost universal use in Italian restaurants. Above all, Ponti was responsible for the renewal of Italian architecture and decorative arts. Drawing upon the legacy of the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstatte, he transformed "classical" language into a rationalist vocabulary.

The entire photographic archive of Ponti's studio, together with his unpublished writings, were made available for the first time for the preparation of this book. There are many new photographs of his work and a broad selection of his letters, diaries and essays. A biographical profile, bibliography, and chronologies of works, exhibitions, and sales round out this stunning book

Lisa Licitra Ponti is curator of the Ponti Archives, She is also a well-known art and architecture critic. She collaborated with her father from 1940 until his death in 1979.

It might be what you're looking for..........2004-04-22

The iMovie 3 Visual Quickstart Guide is a thinner book than most others
in the VQSG series. It has only 170ish pages and is labeled for the
beginning to intermediate user. After looking through the book, though,
I don't see any topic that is not covered (and I have used iMovie
pretty extensively). So I think that maybe there isn't such a thing as
an advanced iMovie user; advanced users are probably using Final Cut.
For any iMovie 3 user, this book would seem to satisfy the need.

iMovie is meant for the novice user; it is meant to give the average
person the ability to produce videos that look semi-professional and
can be easily burned to CD-ROM or emailed. This book undeniably meets
this demand. OK, you say, but what about iMovie 4, the newest version
of iMovie? Well, I chose this book for two reasons: first, there is not
a good selection of iMovie 4 materials yet, and second, only buyers of
iLife '04 and new Macs (since March 2004) would have that program
whereas iMovie 3 is still a free download and usable by anyone with
10.1.5 and up.

Although people argue that iMovie 4 is worth the upgrade, that is
another discussion. My focus on the utility of this book is intended to
reach a larger audience. This book contains EVERYTHING you need to know
about iMovie 3 and has added sections on using a digital video camera
and integration with iDVD 2 (only available on Macs with a Superdrive).
The iMovie 3 VQSG is an excellent resource to have around and will
likely find a home in my classroom where my students can benefit from
it.

Great For The First Timer.......2006-07-21

If you don't have a graduate level training in research, but still want the benefits of having evaluation info from focus groups, then this book will help.

I've long been a big fan of the workbooks from the Wilder Foundation, and have utilized the Marketing, Collaboration and Team Building workbooks. This one, like other Wilder workbooks, is easy to follow and written in lay language so almost any staff member can quickly comprehend how to facilitate a focus group.

It helped me greatly to do an informal evalaution of my program.

This is a beautiful book that doesn't just deal with how your house looks but how the place where you live--house, apartment, dorm room, whatever--can feed your soul. The author is a single mother who made a "real home" for herself and her daughter. She talks about eating at home more often, finding quiet time there, giving yourself the comforts you can only give yourself at home, and even how to make housecleaning spiritual practice. After I read this book, I stopped feeling like my home was a second job and I just started to exhale there and enjoy it. This is a spiritual, practical, warm, witty, wonderful read.

Pretty Darn Good!.......2005-01-30

This is as good an account of Confederate guerilla activities in the Eastern Theater of operations as I have run across. For me, this book helped me understand 3 things:

1)The war was intensely continuous. It never stopped. Most historians focus on the major battles being as they were the key tests of strength between North and South. But the war was not made up of 15 or 20 segmented, key events. It was not a sometimes thing. It was brutally constant. These people were angry with each other, killing angry, and went out of their way to make their point as often as possibly.

2)The North's battle plan was exceedingly difficult to execute. Virginia's topography was not suited to a clean advance. Holding territory taken was difficult. Supply lines had to be thin, extended and vulnerable. The land itself had to be worth many divisions to Southern forces. And they took maximum advantage of the terrain.

3)The South fought a campaign of terror and was damn good at it. Both sides fought to win. Both sides fought to intimidate. The South was exceptional at this through the summer of 1864 but then the tide changed and when it did it was a tidal wave of unimagined proportions.

It is amazing how small some of these bands were that descended from the mountains to attack their enemy and then disappear. They snatched couriers to learn of Union movements and plans, destroyed bridges and railroad service, attacked sleeping camps and captured supply trains and prisoners by the thousands. They attacked in the evening, at noon, in the morning and at night. They even captured three Union generals from their beds, almost without firing a shot.

This is a good book, one worth reading. It drives home the intensity and continuous nature of this conflict. You will not be disappointed.

Dense History.......2002-12-02

This is an incredibly dense historical account of Confederate guerrilla warfare in the areas of northern and western Virginia. The author obviously did his homework with hundreds of quotes and references. The book was so detailed as to occasionally lose the reader. A map certainly would have helped. I got the feeling that every single guerrilla attack was accounted for in this book.

On the strong side were some amusing and touching accounts of individuals and incidents. On the weak side was the page after page of oh-so-so similar accounts of attacks. The book also centered on the Virginia area guerrillas with hardly a mention of those in Missouri and Kansas.

The author's theory, that the Civil War - or at least Lee's surrender - was delayed by at least months by the work of the guerrillas is well-substantiated in the book. However, I think the author would have been better served to apend more time on the larger picture and overview and less time on every derailment on the B&O Railroad.

Worth reading for a serious Civil War buff. A bit too much for the casual reader of Civil War material.

A profound study on Leadership.......2004-11-30

Mr. Kohut's book is a very acqurate reading for anyone interested in Leadership. He shows the keys of both the needs of the leader -Wilhelm II- to assert his own personality and the needs of the German country of his time to build a symbolic image of the country. It's a perfect example of what could be told as emotional leadership, a leadership based on public image, fanfarre and public exhibitionism. Kohut has the merit of having investigated Wilhelm II for more than ten years. You can feel the closeness with which he explains the Kaiser's behaviour and reasons.

The author makes use of the conceptual tools of Self psychology, but the reading is not boring for non specialists. Kohut and Donald Winnicott seem to be the main influences of the author a historian and psychoanalyst himself.
