Customer Reviews:
missed the mark.......2003-01-27
If you are already a technical person who is looking for more information...skip this book. Unfortuneatly it is vague and unhelpful. I say this technically speaking...if you are curious about the process and just want to pick up a bit of vocabulary.. have a look. They could have done a great job with this book... but once again the process falls flat. Don't let the cover fool you.
Only for beginners.......2000-07-25
While I was able to glean some marginal information from the book, I found it totally unsuitable for an intermediate approach to lost wax casting. This is a great book for a housewife who wants to show her kids how to make relief sculture or simple plaster casts. If you want to find out about the intricacies of casting for bronzes, save your money; you won't find it here. "Moldmaking" describes waste molds and latex, "Casting" is in plaster, and "Patina" is only for gypsum products. I expected more from the title, and I was disappointed.
Wonderful instruction book for a first time mold maker........1999-10-23
Very clear and simple instructions. Takes you step-by-step through several different basic mold making procedures, using simple latex molds and plaster casts. There are a multitude of pictures and line drawings with clear repetitive step-by-step instructions as though the author were working with you in your own home. It is a basic book and not so advanced as to confuse you. Great beginner book.

Bronze Casting: A Manual of Techniques

Customer Reviews:
Not what it claims to be........2005-10-09
Despite the title, this book is not a manual of techniques for casting bronze. It does provide a some good information about sculpting a model and preparing it for casting, though. If that's what you are interested in, then this book is worth reading. However, it provides very little information on the casting process itself. As the earlier reviewer said, it doesn't go much beyond "take it to a foundry".
It's a good book with a bad title........1999-11-07
I bought Guy Thomas' "Bronze Casting: A manual of techniques" with the idea that I would learn from it how to cast bronze. I was sorely mistaken. This is a book not about casting bronze, but preparing to cast bronze. It covers all the preparatory steps quite adequately, and I won't deny that I learned a lot about modeling, making molds in various materials, and suchlike. But when it came to the part I really wanted to learn about, i.e. how to cast bronze, it says: "Take it to a foundry." It does give a bare sketch of what they do at the foundry, but certainly not enough that I could learn what I wanted to know. I'm not sure what an appropriate title would be, but bronze casting involves firing up a furnace, pre-heating ingots, dropping them into a crucible, then removing the molten metal and pouring it into a mold. It's about fuels, furnaces, temperatures, crucibles, gas welding and sand-blasters. I was sorely disappointed, many dollars poorer, no more knowledgable, and still kicking myself for buying a book by its title.

“Truly a picture book. It shows, rather than tells, how to display photographs in every nook of your house. Good book.......2005-09-25
Artfully showcase your family photographs where everyone can see them instead of in an album or scrapbook. They'll add appeal to your home & you'll be able to take pleasure in them every day. From classical to eclectic.
Your pictures can only be fully appreciated if they're shown to their best effect.
No tips, just directions to hire a photographer /framer.......2002-07-03
What a disappointment! Although there are some beautiful photos here, you can find similarly beautiful photos in "Architectural Digest", "Home and Garden", etc. What ticked me off was that it would mention something enticing (like canvas inserts), but say only to request them from your photographer. For those of us who like (or have!) to do it ourselves, it wouldn't have taken much space or time to very briefly explain what that is (it is like a very plush canvas-covered matboard), where to buy it (most framers, or online), how to use it (as you would matboard), available colors (I've only seen ivory and black). Likewise, a few framing tips would have been a very nice idea, rather than just saying "go to a good framer", like each reader has tons of money for this. It could have been a wonderful book if the authors had only been a teensy bit less greedy, and tried to help readers from all walks of life, rather than just the super-rich.
A masterful display of photo originality!.......2000-04-10
A must have book for anyone who is in search of classfully unique photo decorating ideas.
Upscale and Current.......2000-01-16
I got a glimpse of this handsome title at a freinds home. If you are the type to pay well for a family portrait, this book shows stunningly beautiful ways to display it in your home. The typography is a little large (casual) for my taste, but the photos are the focus anyway. I'd call it more accessible than most of Martha "you-know-who" but still targeted to the well heeled. Family portraits are special to us and definitely a fitting focal point in our home decor.

Book Description
The debate on inheritance and inheritance taxation has always been linked with the " efficiency versus equity issue". Some consider inheritance taxes as highly appropriate means to bring forth more economic equality, especially equality in starting conditions. Others openly doubt the effectiveness of inheritance taxes in this domain, and point out that the negative effects may outweigh the positive. Some go as far as to say that high inheritance taxes threaten fundamental ethical values and should therefore be abolished. In this book both economists and philosophers try to disentangle these and related theoretical issues. It gives an overview of what economists and philosophers have to say on the matter, and confronts and discusses two radically opposed reform proposals.

Roll Up for the Mystery Tour! Step Right This Way!.......2005-08-06
Asperger's Syndrome, which is on the autism spectrum is a sensory and neurobiological condition that affects communication, sensory integration and processing. People on the spectrum are affected in varying degrees.
Despite the few typos and errors in names, this is an excellent book. Lise Pyles takes readers on a Magical Mystery Tour of Asperger's as experienced by her older son, John. Born in 1984 when a dearth of literature on Asperger's existed, John showed signs of it from infancy. He loved visual stimulation and playing with lights; insisted on having his legs covered; insisted on wearing only soft clothing and hated loud noises. One delightful anecdote was when John, then a pre-schooler looked at an iron with fear asking if it would make a noise. It seemed perfectly natural to find loud noises aversive stimuli.
John found school overwhelming due to his sensory sensitivies. He was forced to leave 4 preschools and found kindergarten and the early grades nightmarish. Since he had trouble navigating the social territory with peers, he was an easy mark for bullies. His rich experiences in living in 3 continents (U.S., Europe [England] and Australia) provided him with enrichments that many people have never known.
March 4, 1992 was a banner day for John. That was the day he began his homeschool program which continued until the 1994-95 school year. John was also taken off Ritalin, which he hated. From 1988-1992 John was on the drug which made him easier for his teachers. The downsides to the drug was that it caused sleep wetting and migraines as well as added stigma. Once off and once homeschooled and provided with helpful cues from his younger brother, Jay, John was well on his way.
John had special interests which is part of Asperger's Syndrome. Luckily he was allowed to pursue his special interests which segued into real talents and developed skills. He had a myriad of interests over time and became a good source of interesting information.
I like the way this book includes practical suggestions; each chapter contains a list of approaches to take with a child who is on the spectrum. There is also a list of organizations which is provided at the end of the book which will undoubtedly prove invaluable to many people seeking guidance.
This book makes me think of the 1967 Beatles' classic, "Magical Mystery Tour" because readers take that magical mystery tour through Asperger's with two very proficient guides - John and John's mother, the author of this book. "Roll up for the mystery tour! Step right this way!"
Parent of a child with AS.......2003-12-22
This book is a how-to guide and daily encouragement for the dispaired parents and family members. It shows a path and opens you up for creativity and inventiveness needed to get your AS children through the daily life and lead them to normal life they would never achieve on their own. It is also a very good literature, wize, humorous and inspiring. I wish I knew of it when my son was little. Even now, when he is 18, I find the book very helpful and practical. Lise is one of those heroes who make a difference in other people's lives.
How Long?.......2002-11-08
I'll keep it brief. My husband is 70 and we have only just recently found a name for what has troubled him for 70 years. The "why don't I fit - the anger, frustration and anxiety". I knew something wasn't quite right for some time. We discovered that Food Combining helped. I wrote a small article but never got it published. Like Lisa I believe our family may have had slight Asperegers Syndrome - some symptoms were there and some not. But my husband is a classic and yet none of the doctors or pschologists ever came up with any suggestion that this has been his problem. I wonder how many other adults are battling through their illness and psychological problems today that could be helped if only THEY ( the medical profession)would wake up. It seems that the biggest problem is that even they can't agree. A recent documentary on ABC Television hosted by George Negus pointed this out. OK - it's a problem for kids - does anyone have any idea what it's like being 70 and trying to get some help? (I'm told it's too late). A recent interview with yet another psychiatrist received the comment - "Oh, he couldn't have it now - there would have been signs and he would have come in contact with someone for help. He couldn't have had a life without help". Somewhat stuneed I remined him that when my husband was a child the only help he got was canings especially for bad handwriting and frequent hidings from his parents (probably for not listening). When he tried hypnosis the psychologist said that he couln't get him past a block because he had been traumatised. It wasn't until we watched the movie "Shine" that my husband revealed that his parents had treated him like that.Yeah - some help. Can you imagine his hang-ups? How many more adults are there who received this kind of help? I wish that someone would research what happens to older Asperegers Syndrome sufferes.
EXCELLENT book for parents/caregivers.......2002-11-05
This is the most helpful book I have read so far on Asperger's. My son was recently diagnosed and tested and we have so many questions and concerns and this book has helped answer many of them.
She covers about every possible aspect of daily life of a family dealing with this disorder.
I HIGHLY recommend this book. Thank you, Lise Pyles, for writing such a helpful guide for parents.
Excellent!.......2002-09-16
If I could only recommend one book on Asperger Syndrome, this would be it.

Book Description
Honored as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association
Clash of Arms examines how the Western Allies learned-on the battlefield-to defeat the Nazi war machine. Beginning with an investigation of the interwar neglect that left the Allied militaries incapable of defeating Nazi aggression at the start of World War II, Russell A. Hart analyzes the methods the Allies used to improve their military effectiveness. He also explores the continuous German adaptation that prolonged the war and increased the price of eventual Allied victory. Central to his comparative study is the complex interplay of personalities, military culture, and wartime realities that determined how accurately the combatants learned the lessons of war and how effectively they enhanced their battle capabilities.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent analysis of victory.......2002-10-18
Every army prepares for and conducts combat differently, in a way that reflects its own particular traditions and culture as well as the characteristics of the society from which it springs. An army's performance depends upon a multitude of factors, many of which are beyond anyone's ability to control or simply impossible to predict before the shooting starts. In large part an army's success comes from its ability to perceive what is happening on the battlefield, learn the correct lessons from the events, develop new techniques, and train its soldiers to the new standard.
Unraveling the complexities of this process is difficult enough when one looks at one single army. Russell Hart has taken on four: the British, Canadian, American and German. In each case he has examined that army's development in the years after the First World War as well as its performance in the Normandy campaign of 1944. His conclusions will surprise some people. For example, the vaunted German Wehrmacht, which authors have lauded over the years as the best fighting force of the war, comes off a poor second to the U.S. Army in its ability to learn and adapt, while the British and Canadians rank lower still. That is not to say that the Germans were weak opponents or that the Americans never made mistakes; any American veteran of the fighting in Normandy would scoff at the idea. But neither is it true, as many German generals maintained after the war, that the Americans fought without skill and won simply because they had vastly more equipment. By the end of the Normandy fighting, the U.S. Army was clearly better than its opponent.
The strength of Hart's book is in his understanding of the issues involved and in the careful research that backs up his conclusions. This is not a book to pick up if you want guts-and-glory descriptions of the battles on the beaches and in the bocage. But if you want to understand why the battles turned out as they did, this is probably the most important book you could read.

Book Description
As a self-proclaimed twitcher—a birdwatching extremist who travels around the country trying to catch a glimpse of as many species of birds as possible—the author took a year off in 2002 with the goal of seeing 700 birds and thereby breaking the national record for most birds seen in one year. In this amusing memoir, he recounts his quest, including how he spent all of his inheritance from the untimely death of his parents to make his dream a reality. Populated by unusual characters and interesting species of birds, this part confessional–part travelogue for both bird nerds and the general population follows the author as he works out what it means to be normal despite his unusually avid compulsion toward twitching.

Big Twitch.......2006-09-09
Australian birder Sean Dooley describes his Big Year, an effort to break the record for the most birds seen in Australia (and environs) in a year.
I loved this birding memoir. Dooley is a lively, humorous, engaging writer, and his Australian slang makes his voice particularly come alive, at least for this American reader. He conveys a passion for his pursuit and a concern for wildlife and the environment without sanctimony.
Clearly, there are scads of awesome birds in Australia, and undoubtedly they have the best common names of any birds anywhere. The species list at the back of the book is an entertainment in itself.
I am at a loss, however, to explain Mr. Dooley's difficulty in finding women who bird. Maybe it's a cultural thing?
Definitely recommended, especially for American readers to whom the language and most of the species will be engagingly exotic.
