Customer Reviews:
Gagewyn is a moron.......2005-01-26
This is a thouroughly researched book that digs into the history of the Jacksonville area with a heavy emphasis on the historic architecture of such architects including Henry Klutho, Louis Sullivan and the many other architects reared under the Chicago and Prairie schools of design. It is quite popular among locals, and should provide some interest for those familiar with the city whether a resident or visitor. Having said that, I would like to respond to gagewyn's comments in his review regarding Jacksonville. Jacksonville, in fact, has 5 public museums, not the 2 he references. And the city of Jacksonville is 700,000, not 1 million. That is not to say Jacksonville is a cultural mecca, but we have our strenghts. And while I would agree that some buildings have been destroyed that were worth saving for their historical significance, I would challenge gagewyn to identify any city older than 50 years that hasn't lost buildings to the inevitble march of progress. Savannah, Charleston and Atlant are 3 southern cities all who have had significant buildings torn down to accommodate the needs of the present. Finally, a bit of a grammatical correction for gagewyn, who stated, "Jacksonville was burned down in...". That is totally incorrect and a significant error when talking about southern cities (as so many were burned to the ground during the Civil War. Jacksonville burned as a result of an accidental fire at a mattress factory that began a chain reaction throughout the mostly wooden structures. gagewyn's take regarding multi-story building development also shows a lack of architectural understanding (or perhaps intelligence) as it is quite expensive to build highrise or any multi story building in Florida as the sub-surface material is usually one of 3 materials: sand, clay, or water. Just as New York is built on solid rock, it is necessary to create a suitable foundation when building on soft material. So buildings in Florida are often 2-3 stories vs 10-20.
Perhaps gagewyn should go back to rating books about robot love (see his other reviewed books), and leave history to those who rely on fact.
Finding the emerald in S___ville.......2004-12-07
A bit of background: Jacksonville was burned to the ground in 1901 in a city wide fire. It was already a large developed city at the time, and so there was a market for large buildings immediately after the fire up through the present. The city is not big on culture (more than a million residents and only two public museums) or any kind of preservation. When a building changes hands it is as likely to be demolished as renovated. Still if you know where to look it is possible to find representative buildings from each decade of the 1900's. Locals will be floored to learn that 128 buildings constructed before the 1901 fire remain.
This book provides a short write-up of each building deemed historically important. There is a black and white picture of the building. The address, date of construction, architects and builders are listed for each. Two to four buildings per page makes this cramped or action packed depending on your perspective.
Jacksonville is not big on preservation and it shows: This book was originally compiled in 1976 to commemorate the US bicentennial. Entries for buildings that have been demolished since then have not been removed, but have instead been marked through with a large red demolished label. Let's just say there is a lot of red.
This is a book with a very specific audience. Libraries in Florida and especially Jacksonville should have a copy of this or an older edition (and many do). This is an invaluable resource to any one doing a thesis in the Jacksonville/north Florida area.
If you are into architectural history and in the area, then visiting some of the buildings in this book could be interesting. Be careful though. Many of these historic neighborhoods are run down crack towns. If you are driving through a neighborhood and notice many stray dogs, plush armchairs in the front yard, and every building you pass could use a paint job and a new roof then that would be a tip off. Be cautious in "Historic Springfield". The city is trying to gentrify this slum area full of period wood frame houses. Every third house is being nicely restored. The rest are falling down and have no roofs.
PS, added August 12, 2005, not to be all Orwellian and change the actual review or anything: In hopes that willself will read this, although I stoop to respond at all. I just want to point out that Jacksonville's population was around 750,000 in 1990 and now in mid-2005 is approximately 1 million. (see www.cityrating.com/citystats.asp?city=Jacksonville&state=FL) The city has grown in 15 years - not a big surprise, as we are not located in the Dakotas. The two public museums I refer to are MOSH and The Museum of Contemporary Art. Private museums come and go, but props to The Cummer on being a fabulous and permanent (or I will cry) art museum. If public school students are going to a field trip to a museum, those are their three options. And please take note, willself as you flame me, that I am definitly not a "he" as my about page has always clarified. Also you might want to shake things up and review a book for a change and not a reviewer.

Gardens of Longevity explains why a few designed landscapes are fabulous.......2007-03-28
Gardens of Longevity is a beautiful book which illustrates why some landscape design immediately looks spectacular and feels "right", while most landscape design feels dead. The book relies upon the iconography of landscape paintings and gardens in Japan and China, but the principles apply to all types of design (painting, sculpture, architecture, as well as landscape).
By analyzing original works of art and comparing them with western copies, the author explains the principles of allowing the dragon through. Those familiar with some branches of fung shui will understand that this means, in crude imagery, letting the good "chi" through and deflecting the bad "chi." However, what sounds like trendy gibberish to most scientific types, actually finds visual proof in this book.
I am a successful practicing architect, who marries the design of landscape with my buildings and urban designs. This book comes closer to explaining how to do this, and why some landscapes (natural and human-made) are so spectacular and most are humdrum or worse than any other book I know of on this subject.
The book also contains many examples to explain Chinese landscape painting to westeners which give us the aesthetics to "see" and then value an aesthetic tradition different from that of western Europe.
Incredibly, one example from the book, on a larger, geological scale, illustrated by the river drainage of China, explains why the country is killing the dragon which has sustained it for thousands of years, by damming and polluting the Yangtze, Yellow, and other rivers.
I can't say enough good things about this book. It's just marvelous. I have gone back to it many times to refresh my knowledge and to review the examples.

Great design book.......2002-07-05
This is one of the few books, that actually take you though the thought process, it's not a Photoshop "cookbook" but it gives the reader an idea about how a project came to be. Many books include art/ads you have never seen, but this include well known work from big design firms and there's design pieces from clients like Bjork, Coke and Nike.
A truly stand-out book.......2001-01-30
Visually stunning, Photo-Graphics is an authoritative, intelligent exploration of a well-chosen, eclectic mix of subjects and their photo/graphic projects. Gilmore demonstrates a keen and appreciative eye for his material, with technically deft, exquisitely rendered, yet accessible layouts and thoughtful text. An excellent reference for designers but should find a place on a lot of coffee tables too, as even the layperson will find Photo-Graphics fascinating.
EXCELLENT! absolutly amazing.......2000-03-17
Beautifuly laid out and wonderfully presented. It really goes deep into how things are made and some of the graphics that are shown look incredibly difficult to do, but when it is all explained it seems so very simple. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in graphic design and people that aren't interested too.

A relatively useful but fragile wedding planner.......2002-01-15
I bought this book when I became engaged last October, and I love how this book is organized. The tabbed sections make it very easy to flip to the section I want to work on at the time. I also like the check-off planning section. As I get things done, I can check it and move on. It gives me a nice sense of accomplishment.
However, after only owning it for about six months, the binding started to fall apart. It's spiral bound with the cover glued around the book. The cover started to separate from the spiral binding early on, and now the cover is almost completely removed from the binding. Additionally, the back pocket is too small to hold a full size piece of paper.
My other complaint with this book is that it is too regimented towards a very traditional wedding. Since my fiance and I are very non-traditional, we found ourselves writing N/A all over the book, and that makes it a rather unattractive keepsake.
I am currently looking for a new book to transfer all my information over into.

Book Description
In 1990, U.S. Army Major Martin Stanton was a military advisor stationed in Saudi Arabia. Encouraged by the Army to broaden his cultural horizons, and assured by the U.S. embassy that Kuwait was perfectly safe, Stanton took off for a long weekend there. Roused by gunshots his first night in Kuwait City, Stanton looked out the window and discovered he was in the middle of a full-scale invasion.
Iraq’s Gulf War had begun—and in the Kuwait City Sheraton, overlooking the entire western part of town, the United States had inadvertabtly encouraged an Army officer to go "behing enemy lines". As fighting continued and bullets hit the hotel’s facade, Stanton began phoning in intelligence reports to his superiors. He noted the arrival of the first tanks and their strategic deployment—to places with the most shade—as well as the Sheraton’s transition from hotel to Iraqi military headquarters. From the top floor of the hotel, Stanton would scour the surrounding streets with his binoculars, then descend to the lobby, where he’d lounge around the door of the Iraqi command post’s map room—conveniently converted from the Sheraton’s conference room—gleaning what he could and reporting back intelligence. Without a doubt, the Pentagon had unwittingly scored a major coup.
Yet Stanton’s prime “position” was short lived. Rounded up by the enemy, he would spend the next four months in Iraq as one of Saddam’s “guests”— also known as human shields—as the western “hostages” were shifted among various strategic facilities: chemical weapons factories, oil refineries, and power plants. Despite his dire circumstance, Stanton nevertheless strove at all times to do his duty to the best of his ability by continually taking notes and looking for ways to smuggle out information. In his role as a roving human shield, Stanton saw more of Iraq than he ever wanted to. Fortunately, he was released in time to fight the Gulf War with his Saudi unit.
With the same insight and intelligence evident in his first book, Somalia on $5 a Day, Martin Stanton has produced another fascinating account that offers readers a rare glimpse of a different time in the Middle East, when Saddam Hussein was at the height of his power and ambition, and when the U.S. was simply trying to repel an invader.
From the Hardcover edition.

OutStanding.......2006-07-06
Captain Micheal Stanton is captured in Kuwait during the first Gulf War. He is Saddam's guest for many months. It's quite surprising that this happend and the small attention it got on from the media.
Should've Been Advised of His Rights Against..........2005-04-23
Self-incrimination.
COL Hart's review below is spot-on.
To a civilian reader unfamiliar with military law, good order and discipline, and professional conduct of an Army officer, this book will appear to be exactly as other reviewers have described it...a well-told, entertaining adventure story. However, the truth of the tale appears to be that the author acted with willful disregard to Army regulations and in a reckless manner, which ultimately led to his detection and capture, thus negating whatever tactical usefulness his presence served during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
Very much an enlightening read.......2004-02-25
I will not write a detailed review, suffice to say I agree with the other 5-star ratings already written and highly recommend this book. Very well written and keeps your interest throughout. I enjoyed the narrative from cover to cover and it gave a great insight into the "mentality" of the middle east and what we continue to be up against in that region (with friend and foe). I'm glad he was able to survive, put it together in a book and not be just another untold story.
First Hand Account of a Unique Experience.......2003-07-18
Marty Stanton has the ability to spin a fascinating story. Before the first Gulf War, he was assigned to a one of a kind military organization, quite unlike anything which most career soldiers will ever experience. The opportunities that assignment gave him for travel and interaction with the locals, lead to a unique perspective on that period of history. Coupling his rare view of events with his sense of humor, he has used his gift for writing to produce an accurate account of events which is fun and easy to read. Most soldiers never have the opportunity to find themselves in the sort of situations that Stanton writes about. Using plain language that takes you along with him on the adventure of a lifetime, this book is a must for anyone going on an assignment as a military advisor or observer. A good read for anyone interested in history, the military, or life in the Middle East.
Former eye witness to the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait.......2003-07-13
I found Stanton's book as a self-serving promotion of an Army officer who did something stupid and in violation of the current US CENTRAL COMMAND policy and in violation of State Department travel warnings issued weeks before the invasion. Granted as an Army officer also present during the invasion there is no doubt that his two days of observation were interesting but hardly of any strategic value. Two days in the Sheraton and then a human sheild is all very good, and makes a good story for an officer who knowingly entered a country purely for self gain. The books reflects how a individual who has used a circumstance to self promote himself. As any military value is highly questionalbe and not worth the read.

Identifying made easy.......2001-01-30
I am just a beginner birdwatcher and this book was so easy for me to locate the different birds I saw. Very informative-Good drawings and a great price. I just love this book. Being from the Pacific Northwest I didn't want to look through the books that displayed all North American birds. It would take me forever to find the bird I saw and I would forget most of the time what the features were. With this book-refined down to the pacific northwest birds- it is so easy and QUICK to identify the birds in my backyard and on the coast. Pick one up today....you won't be disappointed.
