This is the first thorough guide to the design and history of “Kentuck,” a splendid mountain house in southwestern Pennsylvania designed in 1953–1954 by Frank Lloyd Wright. Inspired by Fallingwater, the famous house only seven miles away that Wright designed above the waterfalls of Bear Run, local businessman I. N. Hagan and his wife, Bernardine, commissioned the 86-year-old Wright to design this home.
Kentuck, constructed on an isolated knoll, or knob, is now owned by Lord Palumbo of London and is open for public tours. This vivid account tells the story of how the house came to be, detailing the many complexities faced by the Hagans—from the delights and difficulties in dealing with Wright to the problems with topography and architectual plans. In fulfilling Wright’s vision, the Hagans and their contractor managed to construct a building of great beauty, dignity, and serenity. More than fifty photographs, drawings, and diagrams accompany a detailed descriptive text to illustrate how the peculiarities of the plan, based on the equilateral triangle, resulted in a house that generates countless vistas, indoors and out, and spatial effects of great charm and intimacy.

It discusses how the sketches evolved due to the environmental considerations of the landscape showing how Kentuck Knob was build to coordinate the house and the hill upon which it was built into one organic structure.
It explains Wright's architectural philosophy as to why he makes the decisions he did when building this house.
Visually the book itself is elegantly designed with excellent photographs giving a true feel for the nature of the house and providing some insignt to the wise, artistically minded people whom conceived of and lived in Kentuck Knob so happily and with such a great respect for the environment which the house occupies.
As a child I spent a great deal of time in this house, being close family friends with the original owners, so I would know if there were any inconsistancies with the book and reality and find it most accurately written.
This would be a great gift for anyone interested in architecture, environmnetalism or whom is a particular fan of Frank Llyod Wright's architecture. Also it is so beautifully done that it would just be a pretty coffee table book to keep for yourself or for in a guest room.

This little quote book would be a nice stocking-stuffer or memento for a friend. It has photos of scenes from The Andy Griffith Show (some of them are color-tinted, which looks kind of tacky) along with quotes on friendship referencing the corresponding episode. If you have other books on TAGS, this one doesn't offer anything new or rare. I bought it because the title is a quote from one of my favorite, and terribly unappreciated, characters Warren Ferguson. Alas, there is only one photo of Warren, a common one from "The Legend of Barney Fife." Knowing that, I probably would not have purchased it. Still, it is a nice, inexpensive gift for the TAGS fan; but nothing more.

Dove's text surpasses the two other books I've read on fundraising in numerous ways. He provides a thorough, well-organized approach to fundraising in general and with extensive attention both to the various types of campaigns and to the many components that make up a successful program. Furthermore, Dove cites countless sources of research and practitioner experience, so that his admonitions about what to do and how to do it have a clear rationale and empirical evidence undergirding them. While I'm sure I'll continue to read other texts to delve deeper into details, I can't imagine I'll need to read another overview in the near future, because Dove's work has completely met that need for me.

An encyclopedic reference for heart disease risk factors.......2004-09-24
Dr. Mogadam has compressed a huge quantity of information into the nearly 400 pages of this book. The unifying theme in this book is that Dr. Mogadam describes 20 risk factors for heart attack and proceeds to describe how diet,exercise, supplements, and medication impacts on each one. He includes discussions of some of the less commonly performed tests, like lipoprotein(a), fibrinogen, and chronic infections.
If you're searching for a good summary of conventional thought on cholesterol and heart disease risk, this book can be a useful reference. You might find it a bit tough to read front to back, as the style is somewhat dense and didactic. I think it might suit best as a reference to refer to when specific questions come to mind on these various risk factors.
Great book on important topic.......2003-04-02
Great book because:
1) He's an M.D. that also teaches at a university hospital.
2) No hocus-pocus ancient remedies, or magic bullets.
3) Covers the results from newer longitudinal studies.
4) Discusses the new findings on causes of heart disease.
5) Discusses which foods are good/bad for you.
6) Develops a scoring system for foods that is easy to follow.
7) Points out that it is really a multi-faceted problem.
8) Describes the medical tests to get.
What I didn't like:
1) He says I have to exercise more.
2) He says I have to lose more weight.
I can now understand that: all food is bad, but without it you die; some foods are better than others; food is not the only part of this problem.
Overall, this is a great book that summarizes current understanding of heart disease. Perhaps most important is his point on the multi-faceted nature of heart disease. There are some really interesting charts and diagrams showing how its just not X (just not fat, just not cholesterol).
Great book. I highly recommend it.

It even addressed one area -- lipoprotein A -- that caused my heart attack that very, very few others even note. Do yourself or a loved one a favor, buy this book now and make the changes that will save your life. It's easy to read, take notes and implement.
