Econ Profs, Start Here First.......2001-12-01

This is one of 2 books I kept from my four years in college. It is also the book that helped me choose Economics as one of my minors. It's that good.

Gottheil's models (actually, he really only uses one model--a fishery) are almost absurdly easy to follow. Along the way he takes concepts a student would find new and difficult, and makes them into concepts a student can follow, and in my case, enjoy. I whole heartedly reccomend this title.

I have now had two course in economics - Principles of Micro. and Macro., both classes required the use of the priciples books by Fred Gottheil. My professor was a student of Mr. Gottheil and described his classes as clarifying. She said that he made economics easy to understand. This book by Gottheil, as his class, is also easy to comprehend. The topics are confusing to a newcomer of economics but the style and clarification used makes the principles quite simple.

You're absolutely correct!! I was a student of Prof. Gottheil the first year he released this book. The teachings of the book make Micro-Economics both easy to understand and enjoyable. I've recommended this book to both undergrads and MBA students alike, and have not received a single complaints (but have received much praise).

This is one of the most useful guides,if not the most useful, I've seen on how to think strategically about business ideas that are relevant to the nonprofit world. Kearns makes sensible distinctions between the two sectors. He presents in clear language and analsyis the for profit concepts and applications that are relevant to nonprofit organizations. Bad Timing.......2006-05-26

Rather unfortunately, this book appeared just two years before the end of the Cold War. It therefore will now seem dated to some, particularly in light of the new threats that have arisen since 1989; the old battles over nuclear deterrence have been replaced by new battles over how to deal with terrorism.

But it would be a great shame to let the book be forgotten for this reason. Finnis, Grisez, and Boyle are three of the leading scholars responsible for the revival of Natural Law theories in the late twentieth century, and their book presents their joint effort in analyzing the moral deficiencies of consequentialist (outcome-oriented) thinking. The book is well worth owning for just this reason. No matter one's feelings about the success of Natural Law reasoning (and I have considerable doubts), this book will help any reader better understand what is truly at stake in, for instance, contemporary debates over the use of torture.

Most Americans are misinformed about Native Americans and their history. In the nine essays in this volume, Laurence M. Hauptman, drawing on twenty-five years of teaching American Indian history, selects topics from the seventeenth century to the present as examples of some commonly held but erroneous views on Indian-white relations, including campaigns to pacify and christianize Indians, policies of removal, and stereotypes of Indians as mascots for sports teams or Hollywood film sidekicks.

Some misconceptions arise from mistaken claims that pass as fact, such as the notion that the U.S. Constitution derived some of its concepts from the Iroquois. The misuse of terms such as genocide and paternalism has also obscured the experience of individual Indian nations or dulled perceptions about Anglo-American avarice. The tribal sovereignty guaranteed by treaties and, at the same time, Native Americans' United States citizenship have confused many who assume Indians receive special privileges.

Throughout the book, emphasis is given to Native Americans in the East, where a quarter of all Indians live today. Hauptman's knowledgeable and provocative analysis strips away wrong notions and replaces them with new insights and perspectives.

Selects topics from the 17th century to the present as examples of some commonly held but erroneous views on Indian-white relationships, including stereotypes of Indians as mascots.

Buy it for the photography--you'll learn something, too........2002-10-25

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is an avid birdwatcher. Before I wrapped it, I glanced quickly through it and took a look at the BEAUTIFUL photographs of the great blue heron. However, as I read various lines describing the pictures, I began to look around for the associated text. Eventually, I just gave up and read through the entire book. Not being an ornithologist, I came to appreciate the true beauty and actual wonder of the great blue heron. Some of the details were specifically for ornithologist, e.g., the various stances and neck movements, but I enjoyed it and learned a lot as a layman.

An avid great blue heron researcher, this book by Hayward Allen captivates my undivided attention with each reading.

For three years now I've been mesmerized by this marshland creature. The elegant poise with which it carries itself. The superior "beat-the-bushes", stalking techniques have provided endless hours for relaxation within the confines of our great natural wetland areas.

The tedious research accompanied by the most fabulous photographs has made it #1 in my bird library. I've been privy to many of the same descriptive activites and marvel that for an amateur such as myself, I've experienced firsthand truly one of the greatest marvels of nature.

For 3 years I have followed their migratory routes throughout Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. My life shall never be the same. Thanks so much for this wealth of information about my all-time-favorite marshland creature!!!!

Ecobeetle has concerns for all species and habitats and the great blue heron is a favorite animal. Beautiful and majestic in flight the Heron is the sentinel of the shoreline and wetlands. Throughout British Columbia this species is under threat through loss of habitat and nesting sites due to encroaching development. The appearance of a thriving heron population is a measurement of a healthy ecosystem. Unfortunately as Robert Butler describes and summarizies in his book 'The Great Blue Heron' that the status of the heron and it's recent struggles with the rapid development of BC's Fraser Valley is a foreshadowing and environmental warning concerning the health of all west coast animal and marine life. Conservation and protection of this magnificent bird is of paramount importance for the Great Blue Heron is a west coast icon, a symbol of our health as an enviroment. Ecobeetle highly recommends this book to anyone with a concern for species at risk or an interest in natural history.
