Book Description

Kirkwood presents innovative environmental, engineering and design approaches along with ongoing research and built projects of international significance. Topics included are soil bioremediation, phytormediation brownfield development, structural soil, landfill capping and revegetation and bioengineering for soil and water quality. Ground breaking approaches to the design of contaminated land including public parks and commercial sites are outlined. Contributions range from innovative scientific and engineering research from industry and federal agencies to contemporary international and regional professional reclamation and redevelopment projects such as the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, the A.G Thyssen steelworks and blast furnace plant in Germany's Ruhr region to landfilling operations at Killingdon near London's Heathrow Airport (now Stockley Business Park).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Panorama on wastelands landscape.......2004-04-12

Niall Kirkwood has edited a very interesting panorama on the problems of wastelands and brownfields from the overview of the landscape researchers [what they insist in calling "manufactured sites"].
The book presents many well analysed study-cases and has a collection of theorethical texts produced by the editor and invited colleagues that covers many voids on this fundamental theme to better understand our complex and mutant cities.
We just remain intriguing on the resistant use by the authors on terms and concepts well developed by many expertises on the problem, mainly the architects: the "terrain vague" classic concept developed by the Catalan Ignaci de Solá-Morales; "wastelands" and "brownfields" by many American authors; "urban voids" used by many European thinkers [Koolhaas] to describe and analyse these residual spaces, usually derived from the post-industrial territory.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK REVIEW: Landscape Architecture Review, November 2001.......2002-04-27

Adapted from the review by J. William Thompson

"This book is the proceedings of an extraordinary conference held at the Harvard's Graduate School of Design in the spring of 1998, organized by Niall Kirkwood, ASLA, a GSD professor and editor of this volume
The purpose of this book appears to be to provide a thoughtful overview of current approaches and issues that includes numerous case studies of actual sites, including such well-known brownfield redevelopments as Duisburg Nord in Germany, Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, and the Sydney Olympic's site.
Overall the value of this volume is in making a bold start at "rethinking the post-industrial landscape", as the subtitle suggests. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the book is the gritty, substantive role it charts for landscape architects in brownfield reclamation"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent State of the Art Book.......2001-11-19

'Manufactured Sites' edited by N. Kirkwood resulted from a conference in 1998 at Harvard that presented complex
contaminated industrial sites and their cleanup and reuse.
It assembles authorities on the science, engineering, planning and design of brownfields and other remediated
sites and is necessary for anyone involved in the reuse of these landscapes. Simply the only book addressing the intersection of different disciplines and fields who have to confront the legacy of the 20th century industrialization.

      Book Description

Filmed images dominate our time, from the movies and TV that entertain us to the news and documentary that inform us and shape our cultural vocabulary. Crossing disciplinary boundaries, Fields of Vision is a path-breaking collection that inquires into the power (and limits) of film and photography to make sense of ourselves and others. As critics, social scientists, filmmakers, and literary scholars, the contributors converge on the issues of representation and the construction of visual meaning across cultures.
From the dismembered bodies of horror film to the exotic bodies of ethnographic film and the gorgeous bodies of romantic cinema, Fields of Vision moves through eras, genres, and societies. Always asking how images work to produce meaning, the essays address the way the "real" on film creates fantasy, news, as well as "science," and considers this problematic process as cultural boundaries are crossed. One essay discusses the effects of Hollywood's high-capital, world-wide commercial hegemony on local and non-Western cinemas, while another explores the response of indigenous people in central Australia to the forces of mass media and video. Other essays uncover the work of the unconscious in cinema, the shaping of "female spectatorship" by the "women's film" genre of the 1920s, and the effects of the personal and subjective in documentary films and the photographs of war reportage.
In illuminating dark, elided, or wilfully neglected areas of representation, these essays uncover new fields of vision.

        Book Description

Two crucial aspects of economic reality are uncertainty and dynamics. In this book, new models and techniques are developed to analyse economic dynamics in an uncertain environment. In the first part, investment decisions of firms are analysed in a framework where imperfect information regarding the investment's profitability is obtained randomly over time. In the second part, a new class of cooperative games, spillover games, is developed and applied to a particular investment problem under uncertainty: mergers. In the third part, the effect of bounded rationality on market evolution is analysed for oligopolistic competition and incomplete financial markets.

                  Book Description

Retail-based businesses are facing turbulent times. With intense pressure from competition and sophisticated new information technologies, devising successful growth strategies is difficult to say the least. Driven by the need for greater precision and certainty, retailers are seeking new tools and advanced decision-support systems are becoming the norm for retail location strategy. However, if used incorrectly, these systems can create confusion, disappointing results, and even inaccurate conclusions. This book offers guidelines for retail decision makers and analysts who are ultimately responsible for delivering good recommendations to top-level management. Its chapters will help you identify customer segments that are critical to your business, including their value, purchase behaviors, and current levels of penetration; identify which markets offer the greatest opportunities for growth and expansion; identify over-saturated markets; measure potential effects of same-store cannibalization; and minimize risk associated with real estate investment.

                    Book Description

Gavan Daws combined ten years of documentary research and hundreds of interviews with surrviving POWs to write this explosive, first-and-only account of the experiences of the Allied POWs of World War II. The Japanese Army took over 140,000 Allied prisoners, and one in four died the hands of their captors. Here Daws reveals the survivors' haunting experiences, from the atrocities perpetrated during the Bataan Death March and the building of the Burma-Siam railroad to descriptions of disease, torture, and execution.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-08-01

Extremely well written and comprehensive overview of the POW experience in Indonesia. A very good balance of human stories, information, statistics, and background. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars imperial devil race.......2006-03-28

Japan has committed some of the world's worst atrocities in history (nanking massacre, unit 731, batton death march, comfort women, pearl harbor, ect..) and they still refuse to apologize, compensate, or make an accurate history in there textbooks. Why is Japan so cowardly and instead try to make their amends to their victims of the horrible crimes against humanity. No wonder people call Japan a "devil" race.

5 out of 5 stars WWII POWs in the Pacific.......2005-09-04

During the course of WWII, the Japanese Army took more than 140,000 Allied prisoners, and one in four died in captivity. Their story has never been systematically recorded or documented--until now. Australian author Gavan Daws combined ten years of research and hundreds of interviews with surviving POWs to recreate this haunting account of day-to-day heroism and humor amid atrocities. Incredibly complete, profoundly disturbing, yet eminently readable, this book will hold your interest and expand your vision of the human story.

4 out of 5 stars great book on important subject.......2005-07-27

Very enjoyable. Tells stories of different ppisoners from many regions from singapore to burma. Not very many details left out and a page turner. Instaed of dry books that just go over details and important events, book focuses on actual accounts of individuals. Helps you to better understand the events on a human level instead of reducing the people to statistics.

                    4 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Cruelty.......2004-05-25

Many people have heard of the Bataan Death March and are aware that the Japanese treated their WWII prisoners inhumanely. An additional few stories here and a movie or two there probably compiles as much as most of us know on the subject. For anyone who would like to know more, I highly recommend "Prisoners of the Japanese". It is a well documented and well told story that uses certain units as a focus on what it was like to be a prisoner of the Japanese. Through the eyes of these survivors, Daws recreates a living hell than no one should ever have to go through and, more importantly, one than no one should ever administer or tolerate. Daws looks at all of the different groups of prisoners including the British, Australians, and the Dutch. The war was over so early for the Dutch that it was somewhat of a surprize to realize that they were participants as well. Many images remain from this book and most are inappropriate to toss out in a review like this. This book is not for those with weak stomaches. In fact, I loaned this book to a friend after I finished it. He finally gave it back to me a year later saying it was just too difficult for him to finish reading. The author takes us through hell and back. There is a summation of what happened afterwards and that was a helpful aspect of the book although we are still left a bit short of empty.

This was a major event in 20th Century history and persons unfamiliar ought to become more aware of the depth of the brutality that has emerged in times of war. As I write this review, there is a lot of hand wringing, soul searching, and congressional investigations going on in the US over abusues American soldiers inflicted on Iraqi prisoners. What we are finding out is wrong and upsetting. However, the rhetoric and hyperbole suggest that we have forgotten the depths to which otherwise civilized nations have sunk in similar conditions in the past. It doesn't make what we've done acceptable but the comparisons some people are making betray their ignorance. If the pictures of Iraq shocked you, please read this book.

"Searching for Friday\'s Child" chronicles the life of a young heroic soldier, his early life, duty in the Philippine Islands, on Bataan, Corregidor, and life as a Japanese POW during World War II, as told by letters, telegrams, the words of his close friends and those of his sister, the author.

5 out of 5 stars Touching and True.......2007-02-10

Howard "Jack" Irish was born to Michigan farm life. His family was close, his friends were true. He was a 4H lad, strong and faithful. He went to college, joined the ROTC and was drafted after he graduated in May of 1941. He was commissioned a lieutenant after training and sent to the Philippines. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December and all of a sudden Jack's sweet duty in the tropics evaporated like steam on hot pavement.

Jack saw action on Corrigador before he was captured by the Japanese. He endured life as a POW as well as anybody could, but sadly he lost his life in September of 1944, while being transported along with 749 other prisoners of war on the Japanese freighter Shinyo Maru. The Shinyo Maru was torpedoed by the USS Paddle. The sub's commander had no way of knowing the POWs were on board.

It all happened so long ago, but Marjorie makes it seem like only yesterday, so timeless is her writing. Jack was her brother and she lovingly tells this story through the numerous letters written by Jack to his family and friends before the war, the all to brief correspondence between Jack and his family after his family discovers he has been taken prisoner and the volume of letters between Jack's mother and different officials as she relentlessly sought to find out what happened to her son.

This book is so well crafted that at times it seemed as if I was reading a novel as I read the night away. I should have read the book long ago and I'm ashamed to say that that I did not, for you see, Marjorie's Uncle Ray was my grandfather. So many of the characters in her book have passed away, as has my father, Jack's cousin, who fortunately survived the war. Soon all the people from that time will have passed this mortal coil, but thanks to people like Marjorie Randall, who can tell a story without making it seem like dry history, there will be those of us left behind who remember.

5 out of 5 stars Sister searches for brother.......2003-06-08

I just finished reading Searching for Friday's Child for the second time. Each time I couldn't put it down until I finished.
Searching for Friday's Child is more than a portrait of an intelligent sensitive young man, it is a book about warm human relationships. Although Jack, a prisoner of war being transported from one Philippine Island to another or perhaps to Japan by the Japanese aboard the Shinyu Maru, died in his early twenties (a result of the torpedoing of the Shinyu Maru by an American submarine toward the end of Second World War), he lives in this book! It is clear from his letters to his family, his girlfriend and to his friends that we all lost a person who had much to offer to those he loved and cared about and to society.
Jack's words, through his letters, show us that he had a gift for writing and storytelling, as does the author, his younger sister. Searching for Friday's Child tells us of the author's emotional journey to find her brother, to discover things about him she hadn't known before, on an intimate level that I haven't found in any other memoir, autobiography or biography about the courageous soldiers of World War II. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A family's quest to ascertain the status of a WWII POW.......2003-03-29

I read this book in the past few days, only days after the beginning of America's 3/03 war with Iraq, which may be a partial explanation of why I found "Searching for Friday's Child" such a compelling read.

The book begins with the author's recollection of growing up on a Michigan farm, with her parents, and her brother, "Jack", four years her senior. We are then provided with copies of her brother's letters to home, and to his girlfriend, while he attends Michigan State College, when he is called into the Army Air Corps, from bootcamp, then when he is sent to the Philippines only months prior to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 and Japan's simultaneous attack on the Philippines.

As of 12/7/41, the letters from Jack stop, and we are treated with reply letters to Jack's family from U.S. military, the Red Cross, etc., as the family is desparately trying to find out what's happened to Jack, with the advent of the US/Japanese war. Subsequently, the family learns Jack is a POW in the Philippines, but they cannot find out how he is, whether he is alive, healthy, or been a victim of the myriad of attrocities committed by the Japanese solders in the Philippines upon our servicemen, as well as the Filipinos.

Jack's family is advised of the POW camp within which Jack is held, and advised they should continue to write Jack as he may receive their letters. They do continue to write, but have no way of ascertaining if Jack is receiving any of their letters. After several months, they receive the first of about four "postcards" from Jack, from the POW camp, but these tell little of Jack, as little can be said due to censorship by his captors.

Ultimately, the family is informed that Jack was aboard a Japanese ship, one of 750 POWs being transported in September 1944 by the Japanese to another island, or perhaps Japan, that on September 7, 1944, that ship is torpedoed by the US during which 83 POW's swim to shore and are rescued by Filipinos, and ultimately returned to the US. Unfortunately, Jack was not one of the lucky ones. Thereafter, he is listed as Missing In Action(MIA), and again the family has no way of knowing if Jack is alive or dead, whether he drowned, was shot by the Japanese, who were murdering all visible POWs after the torpedo struck, or whether he somehow survived.

We are then treated to many letters from several surviving POWs, some who knew Jack, were his friends at the POW camp.

This is a wonderful historical account of a family's desparate, yet compassionate, attempts to try to find out about Jack's well-being, his life during those years, anything to fill the gaps. It begins primarily with the efforts of Jack's mother, but is continued with those of the author, his younger sister, efforts which continued all the way up the late 1990's, over fifty years after WWII.

We are treated to the insights of several POW's, their own accounts of life in a Japanese POW camp, their accounts of life with Jack, Jack's excellent accomplishments in the Army Air Corps, his unique skills with operating anti-aircraft artillery, his command's success is shooting down 15 Japanese aircraft, which as I recall, was a record during the war.

By the time one completes Searching for Friday's Child, one feels one knows Jack Irish, his mother, father, and certainly his sister, the author, she who joined the U.S. Marines Reserves during WWII. One is certainly treated to a wonderful account of a close-knit family's quest during unimaginable times of the tragedies of war.

This is a wonderful read. I highly recommend it.

Marjorie Randell's recollection of her life growing up in a close-knit family on a Michigan farm, and her subsequent heartbreak of losing her brother and the search for meaning in his death is both sentimental and memorable. She captures the innocence of the mid-West that was torn apart as her brother, and other small town boys, were thrust into the horrors of war. The story shifts with her brothers letters - both from his service days, and then more harrowing, when he was a POW. Through his letters, we see a boy turn into a man, and at age 23, we see how his death aboard a Japanese war ship at the hands of American bombers brought agony and questions to a family back home. Sweet recollections of an innocent time lost, and the loyalty of a sister that looks for answers, even 60 years later.

In "Surrender & Survival," author E. Bartlett Kerr does an exceptional job of detailing the American and allied experience in prisoner of war captivity by the Japanese.
Kerr's book traces the chronology of the Pacific Campaign through the fall of unprepared allied forces caught beneath the wave of early Japanese successes.
From Wake Island, Bataan and Corregidor to the Japanese home islands, Kerr documents both the heroism and atrocities that faced tens of thousands of these American, British, Dutch, Filipinos and other POWs of the allied nations.
Each chapter is broken down into subchapters which makes the book easy to set down and come back too.
The writing and research are near perfect, without bogging down the stories in trivial anecdotes or biased commentary.
The succeeds in fairly depicting the good and bad qualities of the Japanese warders as well as those of the captives. Serious crimes by either are not dismissed, while less than honorable behaviors are weighed against particular extreme circumstances. Failures by relief efforts and by U.S. military actions that resulted in POW casualties are evaluated fairly, citing negligence, deliberate acts, cultural differences, lack of resources or the overall fog of war.
With this book, Kerr achieves an unbiased academic chronicle of the experience of WWII POWs held by the Japanese.
