The Telecommunications Act of 1996 envisioned a competitive free-for-all in the U.S. telecommunications industry with removal of barriers to entry in local telecommunications markets and the lifting of the artificial restrictions that kept the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) out of the interLATA long-distance market. After close to 5 years, only one RBOC has been granted permission (controversially) to enter the interLATA market, and local competition has yet to provide most consumers with meaningful choices. In addition, the wave of mergers across the industry has raised the specter of putting the former Bell System back together again. Policymakers now openly question whether the Act can deliver what it promised.
Three principal themes are developed in this book. First, there has been a coordination failure between Congress and the FCC in translating the principles embodied in the Act into practice. The authors provide evidence for this by analyzing stock market reactions to legislative and regulatory actions. This coordination failure was largely predictable, given the ambiguity in the Act, as well as conflicting jurisdictions between the FCC and the states.
Second, the Act calls for wholesale prices to be `based on cost.' Regulators adopted a costing standard (TELRIC) that provides a means to subsidize competitive entry in local telephone service markets. The ready adoption of the TELRIC standard by regulators is shown to be tied to the third theme: price cap regulation provides regulators with `insurance' against the adverse effects of competition in local telephone markets. Statistical analysis reveals that regulators in price cap states set uniformly lower unbundled network element prices (lower barriers to entry) in comparison with regulators in rate-of-return and earnings sharing states. The result is a triumph of regulatory processes over market processes - the antithesis of the purpose of the Act.

First published in 1944, The Boom of the Eighties is a companion volume to The Cattle on a Thousand Hills: Southern California 1850-80 by Robert Glass Cleland. Boom takes the story forward from the early days of Anglo settlement of the region in the nineteenth century to the period when the immigration explosion created the Southern California of the twentieth century.
The 1880s were remarkable in Southern California history for a land boom of unprecedented proportions. In the decades after the Civil War, the great ranchos of Southern California were breaking up, and vine and citrus culture gradually replaced the Spanish-Mexican pastoral economy. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1876 increased immigration, and prospective settlers swarmed in from most of the United States and many countries of Europe.
Millions of dollars changed hands in realty transactions: fortunes were made and lost. The city of Los Angeles, nucleus of the boom, increased in size by 500 percent. Many new suburban towns were incorporated. Where once cattle had grazed on the Mexican ranchos, the American citizen built trolley lines, founded banks, and irrigated orange groves.

I really enjoyed the book and learned a lot. The author, Mike Baker, gave good, practical information. Unlike most authors of eBay books, Mr. Baker actually makes his living selling on eBay. Although he is not a professional writer, he gives you information necessary to succeed. His book is easily worth 10 times the price.

Maybe It Is Useful?.......2003-02-15

I think it could possibly be a good training tool in english classes. Have your students proofread the book for an asignment and grade them on how well they find and correct the errors and teach how NOT to write a book or anything else. Whatcha tink? Have you seen the infomercial with him in it. You can buy the course and get a hardback copy of the book with the course. NICE!

Anyone can publish a book!.......2002-12-21

My wife bought this to give to a friend for Christmas. Being a periodic eBay seller myself I thought I'd give it a quick glance before she wrapped it. Well, that's all it took. To my surprise it was 75 pages of double-spaced boring reading. Basically, it is the eBay help pages expanded upon and poorly written.

Mike's attempt to share his knowledge of striking it rich on eBay fails miserably, probably because he lacks such knowledge. However, he does give a few sample follow-up letters that might help those who can't write their own. If you are hoping to strike it rich on eBay, don't expect to find any answers here. Needless to say, I am recommending my wife return the book to save the ebmarassment with her friend. Although it could serve as a step-by-step user manual for someone just getting started on eBay, there are MUCH better books available on the subject.

Want to know the most amazing thing I came away with? Even the worst writer can publish a book on their own and get it sold on Amazon.

I feel dumber for having read it..........2002-12-02

I was interested in purchasing this book before I was scared away by the reader reviews. By chance, I happened to find it at a garage sale and for 10 cents I just couldn't pass it up. What a waste of a perfectly good dime! It really is the worst thing I have ever read. I feel stupid for having wasted 45 minutes of my life reading it.

In addition to the countless spelling and grammatical errors, there is also absolutely NO information in this book that you cannot get for free by reading the Ebay help section for new users and believe me; the Ebay site will explain it much more clearly.

I have to wonder if the reviewers who say this is the best book they've ever read have ever really read another book! I've read better written mattress tags. Save your money and your time.

Please Mike, stop having your mother write five-star reviews for you and for Pete's sake, learn how to spell!

The Last War of French Decolonization.......2004-05-17

After the Lost of Indochina,Algeria became more interested the need of independence but for some Algeria was the Jewel of the Emperie and specially for the Troops that have been their second nation like the French Foreign Legion who have fight for 134 years, many muslin were pro-french but with the pass of time the pressure for Muslim rights,internal self goverment,independence, or even complete integration with France had long been building up among the small but significant academic and professional class which had benefited from the French education.

The post-war French loss of Syria and Lebano,military reverse in Indochina and events in Tunisia and Morocco all prepared the ground for rebellion in Algeria.

The ALN try to emulated the VIETMINH, but never enjoyed the VIETMINH'S greatest asset, an area they could control and in which they could hide up and remain secure.

After 8 years of war on March 1962 a cease-fire was finally arranged between government and FLN representatives at Evian, France. In the long-awaited referendum, held the following July, Algeria voted overwhelmingly for independence. The colons began a mass evacuation; before the end of the year most of them had left the country.

Martin Windrow come again with another title dedicated to another War of French Decolonization(check The French Indochina War 1946-54 MMA322)this time we enter the Algerian War in North Africa, with a quick overview of the war and a summary of main eventes between 1954-1962, I like the comments on The Army of National Liberation(Command Structure)and the French Army in Algeria with all their troops from Zouaves to Natives,a part dedicated to the Mutiny of April and Select Bibliography(Small)

The Book is small but help me see the War in a Quick look,with good photos and superb colour artwork by Mike Chappell. we can see the ANL and the French Amry Uniforms in Color(great plates on General Marcel Bigeard famous for the torture of Algerians)

Good Introduction to the Uniforms of France's Algerian War.......2003-08-27

This is the best book of the Osprey uniforms series I have run across so far. It is an excellent introduction to the uniforms of the colonial (French) and revolutionary (Algerian) forces of the late 1950's and early '60s.

As always there are 8 pages of colour plates presenting 3 soldiers each. These plates, by Mike Chappell, follow the Andrew Mollo pattern of colouring period photographs, but Chappell alters them slightly to provide additional detail. This volume also provides detailed b&w illustrations of French issue uniforms and camouflage patterns. In addition there are b&w photographs of caps and unit badges, and many reference photos of period troops. A map of the area of operations is provided, as well as a useful overview of unit formations. Note that in addition to descriptions of each colour plate in English, the last page of the book provides translations of the plate descriptions in French and German. As there is no translation of the body of the book, however, this is a somewhat odd use of space.

48 pages is not really enough space to adequately cover two national armies, especially one as varied as that of the French. No table of rank or insignia is provided. Gear and weapons are not specifically presented. I would recommend this as a useful adjunct to a more comprehensive work on French uniforms of the cold war period.

Recommended reading mtrl........1999-03-05

This title in the Osprey Men At Arms series covers the war in Algeria 1954-1962. The book is well written and covers both sides. It's also a sort of a "companion" to the other MAA titles like The French Foregin Legion 1945 - ... and The French War In Indochina which are also written by the same author.

Good Read but.............2007-07-12

It's been a long time coming, since A Horne's 'A Savage War Of Peace', but this new perspective on the Algerian war of independence 1954-62, while being contemporary in its demystification and breakdown of the ideologies and silence that have controlled the interpretation of this conflict, still left a lot to be desired.
The papers presented by Zervoudakis (From Indochina to Algeria), Shipway (Algeria and the official mind), Evans(The Harkis)and Rollet(Remembering the Algerian war) were excellent.
However the book was the product of a conference held at Salford University in 1996 and in a way this does excuse the intellectual indulgence and Anglo-Saxon perspective contained within many chapters of the book.
I think it would have been a lot more rewarding if the book had contained more commentary on the French military participants (Massu, Bigeard, Trinquier and Jean Pierre), rather than centre on media images, Gillo Pontecorvo's filmatic work 'The Battle Of Algiers' and the fictional character of Colonel Mattheiu. The title of the book, after all, was the the Algerian War And The French Army!
It doesn't beat Larteguy's 'The Centurions' for the nitty-gritty of a very ugly insurgent war and the motivations behind the French military participants, but it's a lot cheaper at $115 dollars and still is a great read.
