Book Description
Bambusa guadua, the tropical giant bamboo, is the most versatile, reliable architectural material of its native mountainous regions. Bamboo's delightful exterior and exotic reputation obscures its oaklike strength.
New Bamboo is a color portfolio of contemporary structures and decorative designs demonstrating the appeal of building with natural materials for the modern eye. Properly treated, bamboo is as reliable as prime-grade hardwoods, beautiful in its own right, and suitable for commercial and residential structures in any climate.
This is an anthology of bamboo construction by different experts: an agronomist, architects, a designer, and a builder, that showcases projects in Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia, where this product has been used as a traditional construction material for centuries. Also covered are France and Germany, where architects are discovering the delights of working with bamboo.
Guadua is beautiful but not so delicate that it cannot be used in commercial structures like the auditorium-size pavilion built for the Hannover Expo 2000. Here are delightful details and rugged outbuildings that show bamboo as a most natural design element.
Customer Reviews:
Only covers huge structures... not much here for small builders..........2007-08-30
The picture on the front cover says it all - this book might be useful if you are designing or making large Bamboo structures but it gives no advice about using Bamboo to make a real house to live in.
It's not a "How to" book - I can't recommend it.
How can you forget the ZERI Foundation?.......2003-12-30
The book is beautiful, well documented and presents a marvellous insight about the great work of Simon Velez and his colleague Marcelo Villegas.
It is though a mystery that the book simply decides to neglect mentioning the ZERI Foundation and its protagonist Gunter Pauli who prefered to go broke over the initiative, then to drop the ball half way.
Thanks to his determination the full scientific tests on bamboo could be undertaken, the building permit could be obtained for a first time ever in an industrialzed country, and the 6.4 million visitors could admire the masterpiece created by Simon Velez.
One would have expected that an othewise professional publisher like Villegas Editores, who is well aware of the origins of the great building in Hanover would have put reality in balance. After all without this large investment this masterpiece would never have materialized.
It is hoped that the book will quickly sell out, become a great success which it deserves and then this minor error could be corrected.
Best Bamboo Book for Sophisticated Guadua Architecture.......2003-11-06
During the International Bamboo Festival at Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami, I had the pleasure of personally meeting Marcelo Villegas. He is truly "el miestro", a master carpenter, who builds some of the most exciting and innovative bamboo buildings in the world. He is soft-spoken, humble, and refers to himself as a simple carpenter, not master.
The book is a great reference for photographs of his most recent exciting work. Bamboo is a natural building material which has some very interesting properties. It is as strong as steel by weight and has incredible strength under tension.
Villegas has a deep understanding for the special type of bamboo he used, Guadua Angustifolia, which is native to his Colombia. He treats each project organically and executes them flawlessly.
He helped build the largest bamboo structure in the world which was tested by German Engineers for the WORLD EXPO in Hannover in 2000. The structure was so strong, according to him, that is surpassed german building codes (the toughest in the world).
This is a MUST buy bamboo book, one you won't regret buying.

ARTIST AS ALCHEMIST.......2004-10-13
Duchamp was not an artist, but an alchemist. As a teen I had the opportunity to see Arturo Shwarz give a lecture on Duchamp, called "archetypal alchemical iconography & the work of Marcel Duchamp". Though much of what he said was lost on me, the bits I could make out spoke directly to my soul. A favorite artist of mine thus took on a far greater significance in my estimation, & the way I looked at life was never quite the same. This has got to be the definative work on Duchamp, from a man who was both his greatest protagonist,& a close personal friend. Shwarz was a great documenter of the 20th century avant-garde, & i feel very lucky to have known him.

Customer Reviews:
Necessary for Success.......2005-11-21
I have been building my professional library and count Simone's book as a "must have" and "most often consulted" on a wide range of topics. This book is in my top 5 list and on any reading list that I prepare as an adjunct to presentations. The theoretical concepts supported by practical examples makes this book a most useful resource for the new and seasoned development professional. As the number of fundraising resources grow there are numerous books on special topics. For this reason and due to the caliber of this book, I hope that it remains widely available. Building the Relationship Edge.......2005-11-18
As someone who has been a subscriber to Simone Joyaux's newsletter over the last two years, I knew that her book would offer me many valuable insights into how to do my job as the Chairman of a non-profit cultural institution better. Indeed, Ms. Joyaux's book took the goal of building long term, profitable relationships-the lifeline for any non-profit-and broke it down into a step-by-step road map that our instituion was able to put into effective use immediately. All that non-profits need to know to become more financially sound is contained in this straightforward, comprehensive guide. The real life illustrations make the advice and guidance extremely compelling. An indespensible tool for serious fund-raisers!
A Must Have Resource.......2005-11-03
If you are a development director, a board member, or an Executive Director of a nonprofit organization (or someone just interested in learning more about development), you should waste no time and purchase this book. It is very comprehensive and has lots of practical tools you can use. I find myself grabbing for this book over and over. It is a wonderful, must have resource!
Groundbreaking.......1999-12-07
An important work if we are to be serious about positioning our institutions for the future. Joyaux has captured the essence of what we as development professionals should understand and be prepared to address as we look to the 21st century.

Book Description
By transforming math "problems" into games, this easy-to-follow book gives parents a fun way to help their children learn math. With an expanded section on problem solving, fun word problems, and entertaining visual concepts, it proves that math can be interesting.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of helpful.......2007-04-22
As the book suggests, the book is geared for parents who want to teach their children math. It might be a good system for a home-school parent, but I find that since my 6 year old daughter is in 1st grade the lessons are going to be a tad different from what she's learning in school. Since she's having a hard time as it is, I don't want to confuse her further.
The book starts with some really basic sorting and describing games. It was really funny when I held the cat on my lap and asked my two children what I was holding and why it was a cat. They both liked that. But when I went on to ask them to describe a ball as suggested by the author they lost interest. I tried the same game later with my 4 year old son and a few different cups, but he became bored almost immediatly and told me he wanted to play that game "later". Not helpful.
I wonder if this book wouldn't be better had it been created as a workbook. The author assumes you have access to a photocopy machine to copy the pages in the book. Somehow I don't think photocopied, black and white drawings of pigs are really going to get my already-not-interested-in-math child interested in math.
I'm not sure if the author has children or has worked with children. It might just be that the author is used to working with kids who already like math and find it interesting. Or maybe his enthusiasm for math is contagious in person. I don't know. I do know that my own enthusiasm for math is minimal. I was hoping to find a book that would get both me and my kids into math. It hasn't inspired me and the excersises don't seem to be exciting my children. So if you don't find math all that interesting, and if the kids you're trying to teach are having a hard time with math, then this book probably won't be very helpful.
More for the older child.......2005-08-04
I bought this book for my 5 year old- to get many fun ideas on how to introduce math to her, but was disappointed to find that only the first two chapters are devoted to that age group. It is more geared towards the 2nd grader and up. So until I can find a better book, we are just counting shells, beans and whatnot, adding and subtracting.
What a great idea.......2000-10-08
I read this book because, although I don't have any kids yet, I want to do some substitute teaching this spring. I thought I might be able to capture some of the fun that math games can entail. This book does the job. Bear in mind, these exercises are for YOUNGER children, up to 3rd grade or so. The authors are full of ideas, and seem to have a grasp both of child psychology, and the trials of parenting. The parenting part doesn't apply to me at this point, but I hope to be able to pass on some of the fun spirit these guys infuse their book with.
Hey, whoever is reading this -- you might want to think about sharing this book with someone in your life who couldn't afford it, when you're finished getting ideas from it. Or even more than one person -- go on a parenting listserv and talk about the book, and pass the word along. Maybe you have a poor cleaning woman who comes to your house, and only speaks Spanish. You could try to share a few of the games with her, if she has kids, and show her how her kids might benefit if she played these games with them. Think about it. It can only help.

Nation of Fliers.......2007-06-15
It is not a text of technical details, like how zeppelins were built, or what the actual range of the Bremen trans-Atlantic flyer was. Instead, it gives a general portrait of the importance of aviation in the popular mind of that era, and how certain ideas and issues became dominant. This actually explains a lot, that might be obvious to someone growing up in Germany, but that can be hard to understand from the outside. For example, how the popularity of the zeppelin before WW1, and of Count Zeppelin - both as a technological wonder, and as a celebration of Southern Germany - was such that when an early zeppelin crashed - a replacement was built with the outpouring of private donations, not government money. How Count Zeppelin was always depicted as a smiling white haired "Father Nicholas" character, in contrast to the stern Prussian leaders that dominated the government. How the WW1 aces BEFORE von Richtofen seized the public imagination, and made the fighter pilot a romantic hero (Boelcke is NOT a household word in the US). How the informal glider movement on the Wasserkuppe rapidly grew to a national obsession, and made a series of aeronautical discoveries. How the whole idea of the glider club as a healthy outdoor activity available to all boys (sort of like the Boy Scout movement in the US) was part of the redevelopment of German aviation in general. How the aces were transformed into popular aviation figures who flew stunts and showed what a plane could do - (I never before understood why Udet was such a popular character) It is not all positive. The last chapter also explains how in the 1930's, this took on a much darker color - how the "airmindedness" = fear of aerial attack on cities was taught in schools and clubs to make the public accept the idea, and believe that they could survive it.
Models played a role in this. For those that could not join a club to build and fly their own glider, there were school-based clubs in the 1930s, that built models, to spread the idea of modern aviation as much as possible. I bet many of them were paper models. p203: "Schoolrooms acquired a completely new intellectual scenery - model airplanes hanging from the ceiling: air war murals on the walls; dozens of airplane books on library shelves- -a miniature design for the mobilization of the nation under the banner of airmindedness."
As a long term "wing nut" and one time Air Scout myself, I enjoyed this book a lot - but had to pause to finish it. The 1930's were not pretty, and the degree to which the heroes old and new were transformed into the new politics was painful to read about. Painful but certainly necessary to describe, I think.
For anyone who wants to better understand the long standing love affair with aviation in German popular culture, this is a good beginning. It wants a volume 2, that starts in the 1950s, with the HD 153, the Hansa jet, and the resurgence of the zeppelin idea.
Everything you ever wanted to know about airships & gliders.......2000-10-23
Fritzsche's writing feels considerably less like formal academic history and more like an entertaining narrative of the rise of aviation in fin de sicle Germany. At times his sweep is so large that the historical details get lost, but at the same time the added perspective keeps the often dry subject matter (Airships, Zepplins, gliders, the rise of nationalism from German aviation) moving in a lively manner. Particularly interesting is his narration of the rise of gliding as a German response to the aviation restrictions in early 1920's Germany. I often feel that authors writing on Nazi-era Germany try too hard to view all aspects of pre-WWII German culture as logically leading to the rise of the Nazi horror, but in the case of gliding the parallel is both applicable and well drawn.

identifying western birds.......2000-11-09
This book has very good photographs of Western birds and has a very pleasing format. The book itself is well made and has a very sturdy binding. The notations in the field marks almost always include a behavior easily noticed in the birds, making them easier to identify.
EVERY one of my friends interested in birds has loved this book and has wanted one. I have given 6 or 7 of them as gifts.
