Customer Reviews:
UNIVERSITY.......2007-02-04
These are wonderful books and very thorough. This book is full of beautiful old New Orleans mansions, the pictures are small, but every discription of a home has a requisite photo. The text is highly informative and the book is well researched. New Orleans is blessed with so many beautiful mansions and many reside in this section of the city. Reading this book, reminds me how special and unique this city is, as well as how beautiful the city can be. Highly recommended.
NOT for the coffee table!.......2006-10-15
I have read several volumes in this set and this one (vol. VIII - 1997) is the best.
This is more than merely a coffee table ornament. It is meant to be a poweful tool for equipping people to actively work for the preservation of the South's most architecturally rich and complicated city.
It is difficult to imagine a finer work of this size and scope.
First, the publisher (Pelican of the suburb of Gretna, LA) has spared no expense. Cover to cover, all 215pp. are packed with the highest quality photographs, maps and illustrations. The paper is glossy, sturdy, 8.5 x 11.
Second, the writing is uniformly precise and compelling, and moves at a good pace. rarely dry.
Third, the scope is manageable and makes good sense. The University Section, as conceived here, consists of the area around Tulane and Loyola, and extending south to the river. Thus Audubon Park, Hurstville, Bloomingdale, Burtheville, Marlyville, Greeneville, Friburg, etc. are all included. This includes from Lowerline and several streets west of the Park to Joseph and Arabella in the east, and from the river up to Clairbourne.
Fourth, the archtecture history is woven into the general history of the neighborhood and of New Orleans. Someone with no interest at all in the architecture would still glean much about the lager developments of the city, and of Uptown in particular. Politics, environment and social history are included.
Fifth, the maps and photos (hundreds of them) are used well to illustrate and make sense of complicated trends in the neighborhood. They are arranged in a very helpful and easily understood manner.
Hundreds of the homes are displayed, from the humble to the opulent, arranged by street address. Further, a chart is provided with the dates, architects, etc. of dozens of these homes and buildings.
An index is accurate and fairly thorough.
I have to really strain to identify any criticisms.
1. Wish there was a simpel modern map at the beginning showing the precise boundaries of this University Section, and all other sections in this series.
2. P. 16 shows a detail of a map from an Atlas of the City of New Orleans, leaving teh reader to wonder about the date of that work.
I would recommend, as a companion and supplement, Lloyd Vogt, New Orleans Houses (1985). Vogt gives even more exacting architectural detail, but does not provide nearly as much on the broader historical context.
Brought back great memories........1999-08-08
Growing up in this section of New Orleans, I was pleasantly surprised to see several homes of my childhood friends. No other city in the U.S. has such distinct and diverse neighborhood architecture. Another great volume in a GREAT series.
The best of the series.......1999-07-03
This volume in the N.O. Architecture series by the Friends of the Cabildo is, in my opinion, the best of the entire series. Perhaps it is because this is the section of the city in which I spend most of my time, a place to which I've become rather attached. Anyone who enjoys architecture will probably like this book, not just New Orleanians.

The New 35mm Photographer's Handbook.......2002-11-25
An excellent book on everything you need to know about 35mm photography. Good text, plenty of example shots, excellent graphics, it's a great all-round manual. Better for beginners / intermediate. Buy it! Cheers, Cotty.
General Photography book, not much else.......2000-01-28
I think the book's title is a bit misleading in that the handbook really doesn't tell you how to get the most out of your camera. I bought the book hoping to learn something new, but the focus is more about general concepts, such as how to buy a camera, basic shooting techniques, etc. I read the book in a day because I already knew what was in the book -- I gave this three stars because it's a good book for a beginner, but not for intermediate and above users.

It's just as advertised. The only thing that could make it more useful would be to have lower interest rates available in case you want to figure something out like student loan payments, etc. Overall a good book.

Book Description
Designing a successful retail business depends on relationships with four groups of people: customers, shareholders, employees, and suppliers. This book takes you inside those strategic relationships and shows you how to redesign your business to get them right. Highlights include a new theory of brands which shows how customer loyalty and service can be transformed. Insights into supply chain structure reveal a path to a new level of excellence. Job satisfaction is also given a complete overhaul for the new century. In each case the solution seems paradoxical - by finding a way to let the human element back into strategy we can actually increase its objectivity and extend its reach.

Book Description
A concise, up-to-the-minute guide for parents on what the latest research says--and doesn't say--about enhancing child development and early learning in the critical first 18 months of life. Internationally renowned child development experts Dr. Craig Ramey and Dr. Sharon Ramey have written a readable, informative book that tells parents what works and what counts in raising good-natured, capable, confident, caring, and accomplished children right from birth.
Customer Reviews:
Emotional Development of Children.......2003-01-20
Illogical to assume that a child's psychological and emotional development are not patterned as infants from the first day, and that his or her outlook and life attitudes of emotive responses are created by parental attention and attentive encouragement, this book is a long time overdue. Acknowledging this fact, and considering labor issues which remove parents from the household so much that this vital process is minimized threatens each infant born and promising to erode the value of human interaction and harmonious potential in all human resources areas. Valuable time, effort and progress which once lost is not recoverable is enormously important to America and to each country in the development of humans and their treatment of one another. Robotic clones without the emotions of compassion, guilt, empathy or sympathy can only promise a hard-hearted society, a direction of high risk detrimental to everyone of all ages in all capacities. This is a very much ignored area of human relations that addresses all of the social system involving mental health and the subsequent poor physical health that inevitably follows.
This is a fabulous book!.......2002-02-06
As the mother of a now nineteen-month-old, I highly recommend this book. For the first eighteen months, this and the AAP's book were all I needed. I liked the blend of research and advice explained in an easy-to-read and nonjudgemental format. While some may find the book overly general, frankly, I already knew how to change diapers and stuff, and I prefer the approach of being told what is happening developmentally with my child at a given moment and then letting me decide what to do with the information. There are some very good suggestions for what sorts of stimulation a child needs at various ages, and they're nice to use for launching points. Having made it all the way through the stages in the book, I can say that their advice helped my son become the happy, well-adjusted toddler he is today.
Every parent with a newborn should read this book!.......1999-03-16
This is a fascinating and very readable guide on early learning and emotional growth for the parents of newborns through 18 months. Using the latest research, the internationally renowned Rameys discuss how infants adapt, learn and grow, both intellectually and emotionally. Right From Birth contains examples of proven benefits, the Seven Essentials, that parents can give to their children beginning at birth that will result in permanent developmental benefits. It also contains many practical suggestions on parenting that are easy to understand and apply. They are presented in simple formats such as What Parents Should Do. This book considers everything from an infantss personal style to elements of growth to what to expect. It covers teaching, daily routine, language development, outside care, appropriate activities, and a myriad of other important elements and milestones in an infants development. If you are the parent of a newborn, this should be must reading for you! Start Right From Birth to give your child the best head start for development!
A nice blend of research and common sense advice!.......1999-02-10
The Rameys have crystallized a lot of research and have given prudent advice on the importance of building your child's foundation in their infant years. This book is easy to read and nicely laid out so that busy parents can learn a lot even if they browse for only a few minutes. It has earned a spot on our library shelf next to Dr. Spock!
Interesting and enjoyable, but disappointingly generalized........1999-01-28
This book is an excellent read for parents who are ignorant of child development, or for those who still are depending on regimented ideas from the past before so much was known about how babies learn. As a new grandma, and a teacher who specialized in early childhood development years ago, I was expecting to learn something new. I didn't.

Customer Reviews:
Order of Battle Allied Ground Forces Operation Desert Storm.......2003-04-06
If you a war gamer this work will do just fine. However, if you
are a professional soldier or military scholar you will find a
big topic of information missing. Military order of battle contains detailed information on unit commanders and key (general officer) staff. Dinackus should have provided at least the names - rank - branch of commanders down to battalion and
similar data on all Generals. The one time he looks at General Schwarzkopf in the form of a bio sketch it is very light. All in all this is not a work that should have gotten by the editor.
If You Don't Have Time to Look Elsewhere.......2001-10-23
Order of Battle : Allied Ground Forces of Operation Desert Storm, is a pretty concise order of battle book on the larger units that were deployed during DESERT STORM. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Reserve components are listed here. Additionally there are summaries regarding the conflict and the weapon systems involved. ... The price is very reasonable for this published resource and can be a point of departure for future study.
Order of Battle: Allied Ground Forces of Operation Desert S.......2000-12-20
Most order of battle books merely provide a listing of units participating in a specific war or campaign. Tom Dinackus' Gulf War order of battle study goes far beyond that. He not only covers US Army and Marine Corps combat units, but addresses Allied units. For a conflict so recent it is surprisingly difficult to locate detailed information on the units involved. Even the Army's and Marine Corps' records and campaign participation lists are sometimes in error. Tom Dinackus by far provides the most comprehensive work on this subject. Another area in which this book excells is the analysis of the types of combat units deployed, which allows one to examine the build-up of Allied forces. It also provides the task organization for combat of these units, or how they were cross-attached and reassigned to different commands for the actual conduct of the 100-hour ground war. This makes it a particulary valauble research aid.
The Best Gulf War Order of Battle.......2000-12-18
This is the most accurate and comprehensive "order of battle" book I have ever read. It provides the researcher and war game enthusiast will all the data one could ever want. The depth of detail and the author's accuracy regarding my specialty (Marine Corps) is amazing. Mr. Dinackus covers virtually every aspect of the American armed forces during the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991 including combat, Aviation, naval, service, and support units in Southwest Asia and even covers those that did not go "Downrange." Bravo Zulu.
Very useful reference book.......2000-11-29
Tom Dinakus'Desert Storm book is an extremely handy volume for anyone interested in modern armies. It is particularly valuable for anyone reading other accounts of the Desert Storm campaign, as it provides a more comprehensive explanation of the forces deployed during the war than is available in most other books on the subject. Even if you're not interested in Desert Storm, it provides a very useful guide to the composition of the US Army at the height of its powers in the days immediately after the end of the Cold War.

Book Description
The Civil War was the first "image war," as photographs of the battlefields became the dominant means for capturing an epochal historic moment. At the same time, writers used the Civil War to present both their notions of nation and their ideas about the new intersections between photography and literary form. Through the Negative offers an account of the collisions between print and visual culture in the work of Hawthorne, Melville, Twain, and Crane, as they responded to and incorporated the work of such photographers as George Barnard, Alexander Gardner, and Jacob Riis. Megan Rowley Williams examines how key nineteenth-century American writers attempted to combat, understand, and incorporate the advent of photography in their fiction. In so doing, Williams demonstrates how analyzing the impact of photography on the diverse narrative histories of the nineteenth century yields fresh insights about contemporary art and writing-including an epilogue that applies her study to photography of the events of 9/11-as the photographic image continues to shape national consciousness.

Book Description
Written for a general audience, with spectacular images for birders and nature enthusiasts at every level, Hummingbirds of Texas: With Their New Mexico and Arizona Ranges reveals the enormous appeal of this tiniest and shiniest of birds.
The book opens with a look at the many manifestations of the human attraction to these flying jewels, including the Hummingbird Roundup, a citizen-science project run by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, as well as the Rockport-Fulton Hummer/Bird Celebration, one of several festivals dedicated to hummingbirds. The book also includes easy tips for attracting hummingbirds to your own lawn or garden, such as what to plant in the ground or in pots and how to choose and take care of feeders.
The authors then showcase the nineteen different hummingbird species that have appeared in the region covered by the book. Magnificent color photographs and original artwork aid in identification and accompany descriptions, range maps, and abundance graphs for each species.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2007-01-04
My wife and I enjoy watching the hummingbirds through our front window and I decided to find a reference book on the little birds so we could see what kinds shared our front yard.
I was amazed to find so much information in one small book about hummingbirds and so many beautiful pictures to help identify them. There is information about their nesting, eating, migrations and tips to help encourage the birds to share your yard. It is also amazing that because of their extreme need for high energy food and the scarcity of nectar, they are born to be very aggressive to protect their sources.
The author did us all a great favor in writing this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to watch hummingbirds
