One Story - Same old story.......2004-01-02

There are lots of plans in here with ridiculously high pitched roof-lines, tiny, barely functional rooms, and for a book that was supposed to feature ONE STORY homes, a surprising number of TWO STORY plans. No matter how small the total square footage of the house, these designers (surely not architects) worked in three bedrooms and sometimes a "media room", leaving some of the bedrooms as small as 9 x 9, and hardly any that were larger than 12 x 15. Nobody could live in such cramped spaces, and you'd never find furniture to fit the rooms.

There are elaborate Master Bath plans, tacked carelessly onto medium sized bedrooms, and throughout the book, you'll see dozens of upper floor "loft" spaces and "bonus" rooms, that people who are seeking single level homes would never need or want.

As for the claim that there are 450 floor plans, I guess it would be about half of that, if you eliminated all of the "mirror image" plans, and multiple plans that are identical, except for some minor variation.

This book is a waste of time and trees.

Nonprofit corporations, cooperatives, and credit unions constitute an alternative avenue of hope and action for communities that have come up short in the normal operation of the market economy. These organizations comprise the third sector, which accounts for approximately 10 percent of U.S. economic activity. Engaging, insightful look into the Danish Resistance.......2003-04-11

This work provides a unique look at the individuals involved in the Danish Resistance Movement during World War II. Most other works on the subject describe either the resistance as a whole or a few more public figures, but Skov describes the life and feelings of an individual trying to "put a prick in the German wehrmacht." His perspective is valuable, and he presents his narrative with insightful discussion on both the war and human nature.

Outstanding First Person History.......2000-07-29

I was fortunate to have Niels Skov as a professor and as an academic advisor some 20 years ago. When I learned he had written a book, I knew it would be well worth reading.

This is as good as it gets in first person history. An honest and direct account with no particular axes to grind. I found the book hard to put down. Niels has included a wealth of fine detail on day-to-day life in the 30's and during the war, which makes his experiences very real, sometimes chillingly so.

We are all Dr. Skov's descendents........2000-03-11

I had the honor of taking a class from Dr. Skov, on "The Experience of War in 20th Century Europe". "Letter to my Descendents" was one of our texts.

I'll admit, there are memoirs of resistance activities that I consider to be more interesting and better written. However, Skov's biting, dark sense of humor, combined with his unassuming sense of arrogance, make for a unique read.

For me, "Letter" drives home the fact that each and every one of us is capable of resistance. The question is, will be accept this in ourselves?

Honest, revealing and personal view of the resistance.......1999-03-05

I consider it an honor to have grown up with Dr. Skov's youngest child. Having known this gentle man my entire life, I knew that he had been involved in the war in some way but to finally read his words have given me a much greater respect for him as a person, as a father and as a teacher. I cannot relate what he is like to know, but to read of his trials during the war and his acceptance of sacrifice against terrible odds, we all become his descendants in part. My words don't do his justice, just read the book and be enriched by the experience. thank you Niels!

A Gem.......2001-02-18

This account of efforts to understand and deal with threatened exotic-caused extinctions on Guam is a gem. The paper back's blurbs focus on Jaffe's "ecological detective thriller." But it's the seamlessness of the book's widely-informed joined elements -- including biographical and political sketches of great pith, accessible population biology, and How Modern Science Works to try to save avian species -- that's most compelling. This deftness in weaving many individually fascinating threads recalled for me Neal Ascherson's astonishing "Black Sea."

The paperback's Index lists only passing references to DDT -- on pages 26, 27 and 72. Because the bad guy is not a chemical, not one of our products. No, he's one of us. And after the paucity and untimeliness of the legislative response to the Guamanian situation had sunk into my consciousness, it was ironic that in the end, an air force base on the island established the 50-acre "environmental reclamation experiment" Jaffe hopes could begin to turn it all around. Like the ending of William Golding's little masterpiece, with the navy warship rescuing the tribe of island-stranded boys from themselves.

My God! You won't find any birds singing in this masterpiece! Rachel Carson has nothing on this guy! The DDT chapter broke my heart!!!
