Book Description
We know Paul Rand through the stunning advertising, editorial, publishing, institutional, identity, corporate and intellectual legacy he left behind. A major figure at the epicenter of 20th-century design, his impact on modern communication practice and theory was unparalleled. For him, modernism was a way of life and a form of belief, not a style. Like his European colleagues, he understood modernism's tenets as a something that could be employed to better human experience in the modern world. Whether he was designing for the American Broadcasting Company, IBM Corporation or United Parcel Service, or teaching at Cooper Union or Pratt Institute, Rand gave life to his art, definition to graphic design and a reputation for quality to a discipline that needed it. His was an early voice in proposing the essence of modernist theories in visual communication, and he was both ruthlessly pragmatic and startlingly visionary. His passion for his subject and his understanding of the theories and realities of perception and communication were immense, and he was often able to illuminate for the layperson the complexities and accomplishments of his triumphant art. Rand's contemporaries, students and friends knew him as a man even more extraordinarily cultivated and diverse in his talents and interestsUhere their diversity of voices combine to give a vivid, personal and uniquely informative introduction to Rand and his achievements. A compendium of essays, interviews, photographic reproductions, a contextual timeline and an extensive bibliography, Paul Rand: Modernist Design adds to the growing literature on Rand, helping to place him in the proper context within a century of innovative art, design, architecture and technology.

Modernist Design.......2004-11-20
This book, more than any other, will carry the reader into not only the work, but also the life of legendary designer, Paul Rand. The essays, written by some of today's leading designers and critics, give you an overview of his accomplishments and contributions to the practice of design. Whereas other books largely focus on his work, this book comes to life through tributes from friends and family which outline how great of an impact Rand truly had on our world. Finally, dialogues between Rand and others [in his own words] offer the most honest glimpse into Rand. In addition to this exhaustive account of Rand himself, the book includes beautiful photographs of his work and a timeline of his career for reference.
This book should not be overlooked by anyone serious about graphic design or anyone who is intrigued by the work of Paul Rand.
Paul Rand: Modernist Designer.......2003-12-07
After reviewing many books on and by Paul Rand, I believe the reader will be amazed of the facts about this genius designer that this book details.
After reading the contibuting materials from many other famous of his peers in the field of graphic design, a reader will be astonished of what this man has contributed to the world of design.
Design is what a reader does not readily see, but visually understands because of its simplicity at the hand of Paul Rand. Beginning with the children's books he was partners in producing, Mr. Rand has contributed more to the field of attractive and interesting graphic design than any other individual I have known.
Having had the honor of working with Mr. Rand, I can only say that his contribution to graphic design will always be missed.

Customer Reviews:
The first book was intriguing; this one's pathetic........2000-05-26
An attempt at making his photos more "narrative" has backfired on Roy Stuart on this volume. Here, not only are the pictures much more fetishistic, they're also exploitative to the point where they start to resemble stills from a low-budget porn film. Granted, Stuart's first book contained some very explicit images, but on this second book the models all seem to pose for maximum exposure -- in unnatural stances designed to reveal the most of their organs (those "karate kicks sans panties" definitely fall in this category). The result is a cold, calculated, dirty-looking caricature of sensuality, where "animalistic" is there but "sexuality" is entirely missing. This second volume is about as sexy as looking at medical textbooks, and about as aesthetically appealing.
A masterpiece of Erotism.......1999-12-14
The first thing I thought when watching the album was how hard it is to diference Art [Erotism] from Pornography. And if there's such a dividing line, it might be even impossible to determine, but when I finished the book, I get satisficed. I feel like the book was not just another nonsense photobook, but a true work of art. This book gathers all the pictures from the side of the line where the Erotism resides. Nice job by Rob Stuart.
Fascinating & Stimulating Photography.......1999-10-22
This book is packed full of erotic pictures of women. If someone is looking for pornography, this is not the book for you. This book is a collection of photographs that will give you a window into the world of fetishes. Great book!
Roy Staurt is the GOD of fashion/fetish photography!.......1999-10-15
Taschen has published another brilliant book. Roy Staurt creates photographs that make Helmut Newton look like a rank amateur. Staurt is the male Bettina Rheims (Chambre Close), his sense of location and time is sublime. It is pure pleasure to see a fashion photographer with perfect technique disclose his deepest kinks and fantasies in such gorgeous colors. His casting is flawless, ah the luxury of NOT finding a single surgically or steroid enhanced model between the covers. Roy Stuart Vol. 2 is a must have book. Leave this beautifully printed art book out on your coffee table the next time you have a party - your life will change when almost everyone has gone home...

Book Description
The Tools of Government is the first professional guide to the principles and practices of public administration in an age when governments no longer provide many services-but arrange for others to do so. Characterized by extensive collaboration among levels of government and between government and the private sector, this new approach to solving public problems presents many new important issues. Comprehensive in scope, this new book offers a first hand look at the challenges faced by contracting out to nonprofit and profit sectors for grants, insurance, regulation, vouchers, cooperative arrangements, tax data, grants-in-aid, and others. The chapters examine over 20 different tools in use today and summarizes their basic features, patterns of usage, key tasks, political and substantive rational, and the major management challenges that each one poses. International in coverage and application, this book is ideal for students, teachers, and scholars in public administration, management, public policy, economics, political science, and nonprofit management; managers and heads of state, local, and federal agencies; executives in foundations and other nonprofit organizations; and academic, government, and research libraries.

Tools, tools, and more tools.......2006-12-26
Lester Salamon's edited book, "The Tools of Government," is an immensely useful work that identifies the various tools that government has today to effect its goals. Government policy-making has changed in recent decades. Now, problem solving by the public sector is not carried out by government alone. Nonprofits and the private sector have become involved, too. As Salamon notes (page vii): "Largely overlooked. . .has been the extent to which actual public problem solving has come to embrace the collaborative actions of governments at multiple levels and both government and private institutions."
A table on page 3 well illustrates this thesis. This table shows that:
(1) In social service delivery, 56% of services are delivered by nonprofits, 4% by for-profits, and 40% by government.
(2) In health, 44% of services are delivered by nonprofits, 23% by for-profits, and 33% by government. And so on. In reality, public service delivery is a complex mixture of government and non-governmental actors.
This volume describes the various tools used by those who deliver services--from economic regulation to government corporations to vouchers to grants to loans to tort liability to contracting and so on. The point is simple: there are many tools that can be used to achieve public goals--whether those services are actually delivered by the private sector, not-for-profits, or government itself.
However, tools are not developed and deployed in a vacuum. This volume also discusses the use of such tools in democracy and the nature of the politics of tool use. Also well discussed is accountability of the nonprofit, for-profit, and governmental sectors.
In the end, a well worthwhile book for those interested in how government decisions and priorities become implemented and services delivered. The book is not elegantly written, but there is much content here.

Homes Not Jails:
The Secret Success of a Squatting Movement to House the Homeless
Benjamin volunteered to open the vacant building on Shotwell and 22nd, and said I could follow. He had squatted it before the landlord kicked him out, but now lived in a sleazy downtown hotel. We walked up to the alley door, and just as Benjamin produced his crowbar, a very large guy (much smaller than Benjamin and much bigger than me) walked up to his own door just a few feet away. Benjamin thought quick and pretended legitimacy by knocking. "Whatcha knockin for?" the neighbor asked. His eyes narrowed. "Nobody lives there."
Benjamin has broken into hundreds of buildings with Homes Not Jails and knew when to lead a tactical retreat. But undaunted, he circled the building and easily lifted his seven-foot frame over a fence and into the backyard. From my cowardly vantage I could see a weak flashlight flickering at us from a window in the second story of the next-door flat. Was it the neighbor who confronted us? Did he have a gun? Again, Benjamin either failed to notice the flashlight-wielding neighbor or cared little. He climbed the back stairs, jimmied the door, walked out the alley and returned with two homeless people who needed a place to stay. After letting the two into the squat, Benjamin promised to help change the lock if they stayed for a week. Afterwards I skipped to keep pace as, with a crowbar dangling from his pinkie, Benjamin lumbered about the neighborhood in search of more squats.

Looking for a place to live for all.......2000-02-06
NO TRESPASSING is a humane and scholarly look at homelessness, its root causes and its grass-roots remedies. The author has written a non-fiction, philosophical page-turner which should be in every homeless shelter, on every urban planner's desk, and on every corporate boardroom table. The book brings to bear the historical, political, philosophical, and human forces that shape homelessness and offers descriptions of solutions that have worked in today's world. Its an important read and a good one! Read it as you curl up in your warm house in a comfortable armchair, with a good reading light, a cup of hot tea in hand, and the knowledge that your chair, your light, your hot tea will be there for you tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

Book Description
This year, six million Americans--most of them women--will go to their doctors, complaining of an illness they have no name for. The majority will be turned away or treated for depression; the few who persist will go to an average of four doctors before they receive the correct diagnosis: fibromyalgia. In Making Sense of Fibromyalgia, noted medical writer Janice Wallace and Dr. Daniel Wallace, a leading expert on this disorder, provide a comprehensive guide--for both patients and professionals--to this little known and poorly understood syndrome. The authors offer detailed information in a clear and accessible style, taking readers through the steps of diagnosis, all the established forms of treatment, and alternative therapies that have yet to be proven effective. Fibromyalgia, they explain, is a pain amplification, brought on by abnormal interactions between hormones, the immune system, neurotransmitters, and the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes the syndrome occurs spontaneously; in most cases, the authors write, it is associated with trauma, stress, such conditions as lupus and hypothyroidism, and over forty microbes, from hepatitis to Epstein Barr to Lyme disease. They draw on actual cases to illustrate their points and to break through the isolation that patients often feel when doctors misdiagnose or simply ignore their symptoms. When Dr. Wallace wrote The Lupus Book, he brought hope and relief into the lives of countless Americans, in a book that sold through many printings. In Making Sense of Fibromyalgia, the authors address a desperate need for information and reassurance, in a groundbreaking book.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Wallace is also my doctor.......2002-03-17
I have the priviledge of being a patient of Dr. Wallace. I did not even know he had a book until he gave it me at my first visit with. He knows what he is talking about and I know first hand as I have followed his treatment plan. While I still suffer daily from fibromyalgia, I have accepted it and am able to have a full life, and work a stressful job. something that most fibromyalgia patients cannot do. I look forward to another book from Dr. Wallace soon.
A Comprehensive, No-Nonsense Explanation of Fibromyalgia.......2001-10-18
I found Dr. Wallace's book to be extremely informative. He discusses the dynamics of fibromyalgia in layman's terms, as well as the mechanisms of the syndrome scientifically.
Being a health care professional myself, i appreciated the succinct nature of the book. I have read it twice from the library and it was so good that I feel it necessary have at home for reference. Also, I have recommended it to 3 women that I personally know with fm.
Making Sense of Fibromyalgia--Doesn't Make Sense in Places.......2000-12-18
Making Sense of Fibromyalgia is roughly speaking divided into the science of fibromyalgia and the therapies to help control the disease. The second half of the book on improving the quality of your life is well worth reading. The book begins with an informative section on the history of fibromyalgia and its acceptance into the current medical classification system. While the authors attempt to provide an up- to- date overview which serves to legitimize the disorder it, for the most part, does not, in terms of severity, focus on the spectrum of the disease, leaving the beginning reader with the impression that this is a relatively mild, and controllable illness. I began reading the book with expectation and felt at first a sense of appreciation for the authors' attempt to combine the science of the disease with literary and historical references. It is some of the literary references, interestingly enough, that seem to speak to the debilitating aspects of the disease, almost as if the authors could not: Emily Dickinson talks about the unending pain. Nobel talks about the paralyzing fatigue.
I see numerous patients who have fibromyalgia. My skepticism began with the case examples. They have such happy endings. The authors focus primarily on relatively mild cases that respond to the treatment protocol and patients improve often to their prior level of functioning. The patients I see would wonder if they were reading about the same disease. Regarding treatment protocol, there is no discussion of first line, second line, and third line drugs which would be helpful to both patient and professional alike. Especially since in more severe cases, we enter the realm of needing different and more effective pain medications which then initiates into the discussion of treatment the hotly debated use of opioids.
A chapter is devoted to disorders that are not currently accepted as medical disorders which are often confused, according to the authors, with fibromyalgia. The authors warn potential patients about such suspect diagnoses. Given the fact that fibromyalgia was until recently also such a suspect illness and still raises skepticism among some, their attitude seems rather uncharitable. I agree with the reviewers who voiced some concerns about the book. One noted that the book was just too rosy in its outcome examples. The other observed that the authors still could not get away from the notion of a fibromyalgia personality and that stress causes the disease: "Severe emotional stress and trauma frequently triggers and aggravates fibromyalgia. There is little doubt the fibromyalgia can come about or be accelerated by the diminished ability to cope with life stress and traumas." (p.16). The latter is especially puzzling since the authors also often reassure the reader throughout the book that fibromyalgia "is not in your head." Indeed this was the reason for writing the book.
An entire chapter is devoted to challenging the idea that fibromyalgia is a psychological disorder and reviews the DSM IV classification system (the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as it might pertain to fibromyalgia. They list the psychological disorders that fibromyalgia patients do not have (such as hypochondriasis), give the definition of the psychological disorder and differentiate it from fibromyalgia symptoms. They note that fibromyalgia is not directly mentioned in DSMIV, but some of its symptoms are listed, according to them, under undifferentiated somaticization (They meant to write Somatoform.) disorder: these include, among others, myofacial pain syndrome, chronic fatigue, back and joint pain, etc. The authors claim that in the 1970's and 80's fibromyalgia patients were wrongly diagnosed under this psychological disorder. In my experience, psychologists have diagnosed fibromyalgia patients with this disorder well into the 1990's and continue to do so today. In the future, mental health professionals may stop labeling fibromyalgia patients with psychological disorders. In the meantime, they might make better use of the various categories of psychological disorders under the category called, "due to a General Medical Condition." Finally, at present the diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder (Chronic) might be the best DSMIV diagnosis and reflects the psychological reality of fibromyalgia.
Making Sense of Fibramyalgia.......2000-11-06
I have had Fibromyalgia for a long time now. This is the first book that actually answers the whys. The author is a MD and speaks in scientific whys and hows. I have read a lot of other books and this one is a must, especially for family and doctors.
A book that has been needed for a long time!.......2000-08-10
For those of us that suffer from this disease, many of the books available are full of mis-information and are not easy to understand. This book explains things in clear and concise terms, and I would recommend it to any one with fibromyalgia, or to their family members.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book to be used in the field........1999-01-22
An excellent book in terms of the text and photographic material, this book is small in size and makes it easy to carry around in the field. The text is written in simple English, making the information both precise and concise.Technical terms are kept to the minimum, making it user friendly for both beginners and experienced ornithologists. The description of the identificatory features are brief, focusing only on the important field characteristics. The bird calls and songs are also described fairly accurately, judging from my own personal experience as an experienced amateur field ornithologist here in Peninsular Malaysia. This book compliments the existing field guides in the region. The photographs are excellent in terms of quality and certainly help in the identification of birds since photographs show colour and jizz of the bird accurately, which in some cases may be difficult with line drawings and paintings. It is indeed comendable to note that the majority of the photographs were taken under natural conditions in the wild as the surrounding habitat is also shown. Though some of the birds were photographed in captivity (e.g. the hornbills, partridges and some pheasants), this still serves its purpose for accurate identification. It is a very handy book to have for visiting birdwatchers to Malaysia and Singapore who will find the descriptions and the photographs good. Some of your identification problems may be solved instantly.
