5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!.......2007-09-17

If you have any genuine interest in Russian History, this is a great book for you! It really pulls you into the setting, and you feel a true connection to the Palace and the people who lived there.. and who saved it from ruin. A fascinating look at a Palace during different periods of history. This is one of my favorite books.. and I read a lot! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

3 out of 5 stars Pavlovsk with a rose-coloured view.......2000-08-28

Suzanne Massie creates a moving, romantic view of the palace and park at Pavlovsk. Indeed, the author gives an interesting history of the palace, the creative force of its first mistress, Maria Fedorovna, in shaping its structure and extraordinary park.

The history falls thin in unfolding the history of subsequent inhabitants; and in describing the development of the many features of the park (at one time the largest private park in Europe). That Suzanne Massie skimps on the history of those post Maria Fedorovna inhabitants and in placing the park in its proper framework mars the descriptive of Pavlovsk's story.

The historic descriptive becomes a prelude for the heroically painted picture of A. M. Kuchumov, the head preservationist at the time of palace's reconstruction (A. M. Kuchumov's story by itself, would be substantial material a book); and, thus, may explain the scant detail of the park's restoration, since A. M. Kuchumov displayed heroic dedication and courage to his work that would overshadow the story of the park in favour of that of the palace itself. There is no information on the continuing efforts to address all the problems persisting from that palace reconstruction--the first to be rebuilt after WW2--or the continuing story of the park.

Suzanne Massie does leave out the dimensions of the incredible collections at the palace-museum; and the continuing extraordinary work of the conservators. (It also may be of interest to note that the legendary Rose Pavilion has been reconstructed (1993-94); and that Suzanne Massie had contributed work towards fundraising for lighting for the palace, but no longer maintains such connections with the palace-museum and park.)

I should like to see an update and an expansion of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book..........2000-08-14

This is a book about a Russian palace, Pavlovsk, a classically beautiful building which was designed by Charles Cameron and furnished by Maria Feodorova, the daughter-in-law of Catherine the Great. The palace managed to escape the uncertain taste of descendants and the Revolutionary commissars to somehow remain intact. Then came the Second World War. The Nazis occupied the palace, stripped it to the walls and set it on fire. It was reduced to smouldering shell. A devoted band of Russians devoted their lives to restoring the palace to its former glory. Their work is like a detective story as they trace looted furnishings and use old blue-prints and photos to rebuild. Rebuild they did, and the palace is now open to the public. A heroic story, though not in the conventional sense.

This book makes you familiar with flash interface , tweening etc.Till there you will find it helpful but his section on AS is worth skipping. Not only its too theoretic , it is buggy like chap 13 projet , the event handler for the button was forgotten. After reading AS section don't think you can handle real life code probs ...this section vaguely makes you familiar with whats AS,its codes etc..You need a book dedicated to AS if you want to do something serious with it.

5 out of 5 stars I think this book is ideal for a computer-savvy beginner.......2005-03-27

I found this book to be easy to use and fairly comprehensive for a beginner's book. It is comprised of fourteen separate modules teaching new skillsets in Flash MX 2004. It was well-written and direct in its explanation of location and use of the different parts of the Flash interface, which really cuts down on the frustration level for newbies. Compared to some other books that took things a little too slow, I found this book got me up to speed in one weekend, which is how long it took me to go through it cover to cover and do all the exercises. I was already familiar with Photoshop; the drawing tools in Flash, along with using Layers, is similar. I think this book is ideal for any Web professional to quickly and efficiently get up to an intermediate level of competence in Flash MX in a short period of time.

3 out of 5 stars Only an average book, IF you are absolutely new to Flash.......2004-09-24

This is only an average book, if you are absolutely new to Flash. The reason I say this is because I am fairly okay with Flash, meaning I can make simple animations, modify other's, but am no pro at one. I know that this book is for beginner's, but I think that doing things in a more 'hands-on' fashion would teach you far better than reading how to make animations from a book. It would be better if you purchased Flash reference books instead, so if you ever needed help, THEN you go to find the answer. Also, you could just visit sites such as www.flashkit.com to find your answers or post on their forums.

Some people have a talent for being able to make new material easy to understand. With over 60 books under his belt, Brian Underdahl is definitely one of them. In Macromedia Flash MX: A Beginner's Guide, he writes in a friendly yet concise style that makes learning Flash MX, including the rudiments of ActionScript, as easy as putting one foot in front of the other.

The book covers the basic concepts behind Flash--learning the work environment; drawing; creating animations; using motion guides, masks, symbols, imported graphics, and sound; publishing movies; and using ActionScript. If you've been resistant to learning the latter up until now, this book may be just the one that gets you started programming your movies with interactivity.

The book moves you along by keeping you thinking, doing, and recapping what you've just learned. There are lots of mini-projects for hands-on learning. In fact, by page 22, you've gotten your feet wet with a simple animation. Each of the book's 14 chapters begins with a set of goals and ends with a "Mastery Check" with which you can test your comprehension. And there are pop quizzes on almost every page. Although they may seem elementary, these tests help you learn with confidence and know when it's safe to skip ahead.

"Ask the Expert" sidebars seem to anticipate readers' questions. For example, "I opened the Insert menu, and I see there is also a Blank Keyframe command. Why would I choose this command rather than the Keyframe command?" The strict answer would be "When you want to insert a frame that doesn't copy the contents of the previous keyframe." But Underdahl's answer goes one step further and lets you know that, most likely, you won't want to choose a blank keyframe because you'll probably want to manipulate the previous keyframe's contents in order to animate them.

In other words, this beginner's guide doesn't just define features and tools; it lets you know why you might need them and how they may be useful to you. A good teacher shows what's possible--and Brian Underdahl is a very good teacher. --Angelynn Grant

I got really frustrated with the book. Long chapters with little substance. Very hard to find what you are looking for.Unnecessary repetition is annoying. Definitely not a book for me.

2 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, but weak overall........2003-02-07

I am a java programmer, eager to learn Flash fast. This book was only slightly useful. I found the chatty style just long-winded and condescending.

Here's one example (p.56):"You're probably wondering just what the panel is, anyway. In effect, a panel is effectively what is known as a nonmodal dialog box. That is, a panel can be thought of as a dialog box that does not need to be closed."

In effect, this author needs effectively what is known as a good editor.

The later chapters on actionScript are particularly weak. Too much ink spent defining terms and listing actions out of context. I needed more worked examples. I found the built-in lessons in the Flash Help more useful than this book.

On a postive note, my tired old eyes really liked the large easy-to-read font used in this book. Why the heck do so many software texts have small fonts surrounded by acres of white space?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Just Starting with Flash MX.......2002-09-04

I was surprised at how easy it was to start understanding and using Flash with this book. It is organized very well, the language is concise and clear, and one can follow all the examples without having to go over the author's instructions again and again as with so many other books of this kind. In that sense, this book is a confidence builder and should be read by all who are starting with Flash.

I knew a few basics from the files that come with flash, and was able to do very few basic things. I read through this book, and I now have a solid background in all the flash basics. I like the layout too. Great book, excellent for beginners.

I had no previous experience with flash, and within 8 hours of purchasing the book I had a professional looking flash design website complete with links, movies, animation, and buttons. Excellent book for the flash beginner.

As a Realtor in a market that has a huge influx of the over 55 market, I was hoping for a lot more information. Yes, there are charts and graphs saying Americans are getting older. However, since the book was written in 1992, the information is about 10 years old. Save your money. There is no real hard core "How to Sell to the Seniors" info in this book

There is no more illustrious warship name in British naval history than HMS Victory, which is inextricably linked with Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. This fascinating book celebrates all three at a most appropriate moment - the 200th anniversary of Nelson's greatest triumph and his death in HMS Victory. What is less well known is that six warships before Nelson's carried the name Victory, the first being Sir John Hawkins' during the Battle of the Armada in 1588, which sailed from Plymouth to battle the Spanish. All manner of maritime life is included in this book, from piracy in the Azores to gentlemanly encounters between fleets as well as the battle of annihilation that was Trafalgar. The full horror, majesty and thunder of naval warfare in the age of fighting sail is revealed through the first-hand accounts of those who were there. The post-Trafalgar career of Victory is studied, continuing to the present, for she is still in commission, as Flagship of the Second Sea Lord.

'H.M.S. VICTORY' includes the forgotten story of HMS Victory AFTER Trafalgar, including the amazing triumph she obtained for Britain in the Baltic while flying the flag of Admiral Sir James Saumarez. The same chapter includes the never before published letters of a humble Royal Marine who believed his wife had drowned off Guernsey, only to find she had run off with a sailor! It also tells the story of the parallel lives of Nelson and HMS Victory, for the book places the human element to the fore throughout. The stories of other admirals who flew their flag in Victory are also touched on, including Howe, Keppel, Hood and Jervis.

The Foreword is provided by Vice Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, Second Sea Lord and Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command in the Trafalgar 200 year. There are also contributions from Admiral Sir Alan West, First Sea Lord and other serving members of the Royal Navy, including Commodore Allan Adair, Commander British Forces Gibraltar, whose forebear was killed in Victory at Trafalgar and Lieutenant Commander Frank Nowosielski, current Commanding Officer HMS Victory.

Superbly illustrated, well researched and written by two leading naval experts, 'H.M.S. VICTORY' will be enjoyed by all those for whom naval heritage and the 'Immortal Memory' of Nelson, his ship and achievements hold a fascination.'H.M.S VICTORY' is the third in Pen and Sword's 'Warships of the Royal Navy' series. The previous two titles were 'WARSPITE' (2001), about a legendary battleship that fought in both WW1 and WW2, and 'H.M.S. LONDON' (2003), about a Portsmouth-built cruiser that saw action from the Russian convoys in WW2 to the Yangtze. The previous two titles were written by Iain Ballantyne, placing the experiences of ordinary sailors in war and peace at the core of the story.

                      Book Description

For the first time, this special edition combines excerpts from John J. Audubon's vivid and witty descriptions with 97 full-color plates of the birds of the Northeast, creating a guide that Audubon might have published himself. In his own distinctive voice, Audubon casts light on his inspiration, exuberance, and deep love for birds and nature. Audubon's observations take us into the field with him and "see" the birds as he did.

In this first in a series of regional guides, editor Julien Tavener takes Audubon out of the confinement of museums and galleries, and places him back in the fields and forests he loved.

Perfect for any Audubon enthusiast or birder, this personal field guide portrays a unique insight into what Audubon saw, both through his art and his eloquent writings.

5 out of 5 stars A new look at Audubon and his birds.......2004-02-24

I love this book, and anyone interested in birds, history, and/or art is bound to love it, too.

John J. Audubon's Guide; Birds of the Northeast pairs a selection of the familiar, classic Audubon images with his descriptions of the birds as he observed them in the early 19th century. Audubon's writing style is poetic and vivid, and if you are familiar mainly with his images, this book is a very accessible way to introduce yourself to his writing.

Ron Tyler's essay on Audubon's work makes for enjoyable reading, too. And, finally, the book is handsomely designed and handily sized.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea - Nicely Executed.......2004-01-31

This is the first in a series of four books, delineated by region, that will present the text and octavo images of Audubon's birds. The 34-page introductory biography by Dr. Ron Tyler is worth the purchase price by itself. Even advanced birdwatchers will learn something from Audubon's descriptions that have been expertly edited by Julien Taverner. I have been researching and writing about Audubon for fifteen years and even I found some new references in the excellent and exhaustive biography. If he were alive today, this is the way Audubon would have done it. Great gift idea for birders, print collectors, and history buffs.

5 out of 5 stars In his own words.......2004-01-16

This book is a real addition to any birder's library. Combining John Audubon's well known and beautiful images of birds drawn in the 1830's with his lovely descriptions. The book has a good biography of Audubon as well as the pictures and Audubon's notes. You can really hear Audubon's love of birds and nature in his writing. I liked the fact that it was styled like a
guide from the 19th century. It is beautifully illustrated.
