This is an excellent manual which answers all of the procedural and operating questions anyone could have about this topic. I heartily recommend it.
Starting a Nonprofit.......2007-04-10
I am in the process of forming a nonprofit organization to benefit people with brain injury. An attorney friend suggested that I purchase this book which gives guidelines for setting up a nonprofit organization in California. Being a novice in the field of start up companies I have found this book to be without exception easy to understand and follow and gives you samples of forms and detailed explanations on how to file them with your local, state, and federal government. I would recommend this book to anyone who is in the process of beginning a nonprofit even if you have previous experience. It gave me the assurance that forms would be filed properly and the advise on writing the bylaws to the company.

This book has saved my theatre troupe hundreds of dollars. Easy to use and extremely helpful, it explains all of the legalease and other intricacies that go into filing for a 501c(3). A good for instance -
A friend recently filed for a 501c(3) for the same purpose as me (educational). Her filing fees and legal costs have totaled over $800.00. Mine, including the purchase of this book, are estimated at $300.00! That's a huge savings, especially for a small group like mine...
An invaluable resource for starting a non-profit in CA.......2006-07-22
This was an excellent book, very well written for the layperson. The online links to further instruction and the CDROM were fabulous tools. I highly recommend this to an start-up non-profit.
Excellent Step by Step Guide to Forming Your Non-Profit.......2006-04-03
This book is an excellent step by step guide for starting your non-profit corporation in California. The author does a lot of hand holding, which is especially helpful when it comes to filing your 1023 with the IRS which establishes your tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.
So here is what you will get out of the book:
1)Should you form a non-profit or a regular business?
He discusses the advantages and disadvanges of a non-profit.
2)501(c)(3)- What is it, do you qualify?
He goes in to detail on if your organization's purpose and activities qualifies you as a 501(c)(3) non-profit with all of its tax advantages. This is a key and important consideration. He also goes into the detail about the structure of your organization- the directors, officers, and how officer's/director's salaries and family affliations might affect non-profit status. He gives plenty of examples, which I found very helpful.
(3)Step by Step filing of articles of incorporation with the State of California.
He gives sample articles of incorporation for "public benefit corporations", which a general category as well as religious corporations. He give plenty of information on how to modify these articles to your individual needs.
(4)Step by Step creation of Bylaws. Again, discussion of each point in the bylaws with suggestions for modification to suit your needs.
(5)Filing for tax exempt status with the State of California and the IRS. This is potentially the most daunting part of the process, but I found that he takes you through it slowly, step by step, to make it as painless as possible although I am sure it is still a somewhat painful process.
(6)Finally he takes you through how to keep corporate records, and conducting your first board of directors meetings.
All of the forms, sample bylaws, articles of incorporation, IRS instructions, etc. are found on the CD rom that comes with the book.
What the book doesn't provide:
--Some practical and common questions did remain unanswered. For example, Lets say you pour seed money into a non-profit corporation, from your own pocket, to pay for travel, meetings, conferences and other promotional activity. Is this tax deductable to you?
--Doesn't offer very much guidance of where there are free university and other resources for new non-profits. This would have been very helpful.
Perhaps both of these like that are beyond the scope of the book.
If you are looking for a book that will give you an very good understanding the structure of a non-profit corporation and a practical step by step guide of how to form one and fill out the proper paperwork, I highly recommend this book.

A book for someone who is wanting to begin exploring theatrical costume design or production.
My Bible for Costume.......2006-11-24
I found this book around 25 years ago. At that time it didn't have any explinations, only the designs and some general info in the front. I do pre 1660 re-enactment and still use and teach from my well worn copy. I put it in a notebook and lend out sheets to explain how pieces go together. It isn't totally accurate, but it is a starting place for new costumers. It is easier to explain changes to make it accurate from there.
Wonderful sourcebook.......2006-11-02
I am a costume designer and have had this book for many years. I
recently purchased a copy for one of my student workers who has
gone on to pursue a degree in costume design. It is a great book
for fashion history overview. It is full of basic period patterns
that are simple to draft and then use your own details.
It accessible to beginners but a wonderful resource for professionals
as well.

I bought this hot off the press 22 years ago, and wouldn't be without it. This dog-eared book has been borrowed many times! I copy pages, draft patterns. Now, I'm going to get a copy for my son's drama teacher. It is a wonderful, basic reference, with enough patterns to get started. Really valuable for getting an idea of historical silhouette. I can't wait to see what changes have been made from my edition!
Accurate, clear, and user-friendly.......2006-10-11
This simple book is the ultimate on basic construction in period costumes for the stage from ancient Egypt to the early 20th century. This goes through history and shows for each look the following: male and female sketch of the final costume, labels that name important parts of the costume, undergarments (where relevant), scale patterns on each piece shown (except some hats), decorative patterns to help with the selection of trims, and instructions on how to wear (when needed). There is also a section on pattern drafting and draping methods, sizing, millinery (hat making), and special costume pieces (hats, wigs, corset sizing, animal faces, masks).
My book is worn and torn though I care for my books like some people do fine china. It is the most useful reference for a costumer, and as a designer, it is important to see what goes behind a design. The designs cover a narrow enough amount of time to show distinct and fairly subtle changes, while remaining general enough to give the feel of an era, but allow complete creative license. (And think of how much you save by not buying dozens of patterns, many of which lack the accuracy for shape found in this book!)

New Lives .......2007-01-13
The book New Lives by Dorothy Rabinowitz, is a graphic yet moving book about Holocaust survivors, before, after and during World War Two. In the books seven chapters, it tells stories of many survivors and goes back and fourth between some, finishing stories after starting a new one. For example, chapter one is all about a woman, who had been an SS guard, and her war crimes trial. Through out the book you learn the stories of many witnesses that are testifying against her. The book is very long but extremely interesting. And although sad, it can change your outlook on the Holocaust.
I would recommend New Lives to anyone who is interested in learning about the Holocaust but beware of younger readers; the contents are very upsetting at parts. I love learning about the Holocaust and have read many books about it but none like this. Dorothy Rabinowitz tells it word for word, how it happened to these people, it almost felt like I was there with them. Rabinowitz wrote the book to teach people what they went through and ho9w they lived after wards. Some stories were like mini-autobiographies. I thought that there was a small connection with the book Inherit the Wind because both shows how religion can change someone's live so drastically. This book was amazing and disturbing and sad all at once. If you can handle all that and are interested in the Holocaust, then you should read New Lives.
