Great Historical Value.......2000-06-12

The book has a great historical value. It explains the theoretical basis of the simplified methods implemented in most modern design codes. The emphasize is on strength design based on Yield Line method. But, nowadays slab design is governed by the serviceability criteria, rather than strength. The serviceability design is not well covered, which makes this book not very useful. It is an interesting book, but it is not very practical and it is not very relevant to the modern design practice.

A beautifully illustrated guidebook........1997-11-10

This book, which was developed from an exhibition catalogue produced for RIBA, provides many beautiful photographs of antique drawing instruments with a descriptive text. Although the text is divided into thematic chapters (published works, instruments for drawing circles, for measuring, cases of instruments, etc.), the illustrations seem to follow no particular order, and captions are written in the style of antique sale catalogues. The lack of footnotes makes this work less useful for the scholar than the collector, and there is the occasional indication that the author's expertise is based more on an art historical than a practical perspective, but there is a large amount of useful information here; the section on published works is especially well done. A must read for those interested in the history of scientific instruments in general and specialists in the history of technical drawing.

not a bad book but by no means good. it's like 7 pages long and not as comprehensive as I was hoping, but for the price it's not a bad investment if you're going to take the exam.

Hundreds of thousands of small retail businesses in the United States are being put out of business by the major retail chains. The Main Streets in America's towns and villages are losing their businesses and customers to the chain retailers located in malls and stand-alone destinations outside of the town. Towns and villages and their residents lose high-paying employment and business opportunities, property values and the tax base go down, and community costs go up to pay for health and other services for the underpaid workers of the major retail chains. The problem, as seen by the author, an antitrust and civil rights lawyer, is the nation's failure to enforce the antitrust laws.

Another problem is that towns and villages, in their effort to bring in the moneys needed to pay for their increasing governmental services, lean heavily on human beings in the area with nuisance fines for parking, driving, standing, outdated inspection, registration and license, marijuana smoking, speed traps, dirty sidewalks - anything to help the town make its budget. Along the way, enforcement of law against non-humans (i.e., the major corporations) is virtually non-existent, probably because it is difficult to put a corporation in jail.

The author explains a novel but highly workable solution to these town and village problems. He describes how every town and village should appoint a "Town Attorney General" to act as a CIVIL PROSECUTOR against the corporations for their wrongdoing injuring the town and/or its residents, and use the proceeds of the civil litigation to provide FREE healthcare, FREE dental care, FREE prescription drugs, FREE broadband services and REDUCED local taxes for all residents.

An unintended but very real consequence would be the reduction of prosecutorial abuse in criminal prosecutions, because the new way to political success would be to obtain needed services for all residents rather than trying to put as many local residents as possible in jail, with high costs and few benefits to the community.

Any one town can do this without waiting for any other towns to act, and any one individual in the town can make it happen by running for office promising (realistically) to obtain healthcare and dental care for the town's residents. When this occurs, the residents of adjoining towns will demand the same, which in substance is a grass roots program for putting the genie of globalization (and outsourcing progeny) back into their bottle.

I must say that I knew most of the stuff contained in the book, since the web contains a LOT of information. Nevertheless, the online info is quite dispersed. Here you can have all the knowledge in one book. Also, I did not give it 5 stars, because I think it still lacks a bit of professionalism; the author indeed knew a lot from decades for worm composting, but still, a lot of her knowledge was empiric and seems unsure of some of the causes. For instance, she emphasizes a lot on cold climates and gives little info on hot climates.

This book had very compete instructions on the worm composting system. In fact, it was so good, that after reading it, I decided that the amount of care they would need was more than I wanted to take on.

Recycling to the Max.......2007-06-09

More and more people are developing an interest in non-toxic methods of horticulture and agriculture. Not only that, but the limitations of landfills, the expense of fossil fuels, and the growing body of evidence showing a relationship between human activity and global warming is leading us to consider the wisdom of recycling. Everything. So here we are with a natural, inexpensive method of enriching our soil, and making it disease and pest resistant. This book is a great introduction to the topic of vermiculture. It may take a while before you actually get up the courage to do it, because the book does not adequately dramatize and address the fears and revulsions most people have to rotting, decomposition, and the like. But still, it's a good book.

Hurray for Worms.......2007-03-09

This book is very informative. My only negative comment is that sometimes the information is hard to find when going back for reference.

I've had my worms for 3 days now and a few have escaped. Overall they seem happy to eat the food I've put in the home I made for them, but plastic tubs the size and shape that she recommends are pretty impossible to find. I don't know if this is why some of them are trying to leave. I hope to get an upgrade in worm housing for an upcoming birthday and perhaps this will eliminate the wanderlust some of them are feeling.

This is a great book! Not only was it easy to read, I found everything I needed to know and more. The book is filled with a nice blend of scientific information presented with a light-hearted often amusing approach.
