Inspiring, Very Well Done Book.......2006-03-23

I have picked it up for the photos over and over again, and read it more than a few times. It's pretty darn cool. To be clear, it is not a DIY information sort of book (but I don't think the title even suggests that anyway). Neat dreamy title, neat dreamy pictures, neat dreamy book. I bought this when we were first thinking about building a cabin, and it was really inspiring. Great pictures of lots of kinds of retreats, and really cool stories about people who created them. Thanks to the author for including all kinds of camps ... from tiny sheepwagons to tar-paper shacks and from log cabins to treehouses.

A great coffee table book but it dosen't include any plans for building a retreat yourself. It isn't a do-it yourself type of book but it is informative and has great pictures.

Great but not what I was looking for.......2001-03-09

Although the book and information is helpful and thoroughly useful, this is not what I was looking for. I am having a hard time finding - a social area - party area - for outdoors to build along side of the pool. We find we need an (approx 25 x 12) area for indoor/outdoor use when we entertain.

Dreamy but not as helpful as we wanted.......2001-01-20

We have been searching for vacation home books as we plan our own, and this one, while handsome, was a bit of a disappointment. I love to sit and dream with great photos of retreats, but we couldn't relate to many of those shown here. Still, this is a nice little book. I highly recommend another new book called Second Home, which is large and colorful and mixes tours of real homes around the country (everything from oceanside homes and lake cottages to mountain cabins) with practical tips on finding the right location for us, and on building, decorating, remodeling, and so on. My husband and I keep grabbing Second Home away from each other as we go from picture to picture. (We found Second Home at Border's, but I now see that amazon stocks it. I don't know why it hasn't turned up on amazon's recommendations or "new and notable" lists yet.)

I recently had a cabin built. If you can't stay away from yours, or think you wouldn't if you had one, this is THE book!

Fabulous book! This is the most complete and comprehensive account of the ill-fated 1968 Presidential campaign of RFK ever written. All the speeches, campaign stops and strategy meetings are discussed in detail as well as an analysis of RFK's platform and the deteriorating political relationship with fellow Democratic candidate Eugene McCarthy are vividly covered...Witcover really puts the reader right into the campaign and it's never more evident than when the assasination and subsequent hospital stay and funeral are covered. Most books about this campaign cover just the campaign details or the assasination and none cover completely all the post assasination details like this book does (i.e. we hear about how 3 people are injured/killed in the funeral train procession). Finally, Witcover's conclusions about Kennedy's policies and speculation about his possible Presidency are right on target. Overall, this is an essential book in understanding RFK's transformation from the "Ruthless Cannonball" into a caring/[...] person who very well would have been President...highly recommended.

Tagged by detractors as being ruthless, the Senator's supporters lighten the charge by doing a parody of the "Wabash Cannonball," called the "Ruthless Cannonball." Robert Kennedy, then a senator, had lived with the charge of ruthlessness since his days as a young attorney prosecuting Teamsters and mafiosi. In fairness, the Senator does not appear to be ruthless. He appears to be a very determined, committed, goal oriented, compassionate and often driven man. He was the man who was credited with helping unify groups of disenfranchised persons; he was the advocate and voice for many.

Witcover's clear, precise writing literally places his readers on board that 1968 campaign train. In reading this book, one almost wants to cheer, "Hop on board the campaign train! Next stop, VICTORY!"

Sadly, the last stop was in Los Angeles the night of June 5, 1968 when Senator Robert Kennedy was assassinated. This book does an excellent job of discussing the tragic aftermath of the Senator's assassination and yet the question will always remain -- what would this truly good man have accomplished had he lived to be elected president in 1968?

Really puts you with RFK in the '68 campaign..........2001-05-08

A marvelous book! Bill Eppridge's pictures along with the subtle prose take you back to 1968 for the RFK Presidential campaign. Eppridge and Gorey do such a good job that you're once again shocked when Sirhan fires his gun. If you get this book along with Jules Witcover's 85 Days (both out-of-print, but easiliy available through on-line book searches) you'll have a definite and detailed understanding of RFK's vision for America in '68. A must have for the Kennedy historian.

HISTORY PRESERVED IN PHOTOGRAPHS.......2001-02-15

As another person who has an extensive RFK collection, this book is a must have. The photographs capture the chilling contrast of the vibrant, living, active, moving, doing Senator and the dying man, eyes seemingly trained on whoever fired the fatal shots.

This book in an excellent addition to any serious collection and it preserves a period of history without condemning the times. It is something that is well worth having.

A great book for beginning birders.......2004-04-29

For the beginning birder, the identification of Sparrows (in particular) and Finches can be a trying experience due to their similarity in appearance. This guide attempts to simplify the process for those in the eastern region of North America. Naturally, for the beginner, reems of scientific information is out of the question; what is need is key information and clear, detailed photographs in order to gain familiarity. And that's what this guide provides. There's no two ways about it, this is an excellent resource for the beginning birder.
