Book Description
Among the most talked-about names in contemporary architecture, the firm of Diller + Scofidio has for the last two decades redefined what architecture can be. Through site-specific, highly conceptual works such as the acclaimed redesign of the famed Brasserie restaurant in New York City's Seagram Building, to the "Blur" building, created for the Swiss Expo 2002 and composed entirely of mist, the firm has consistently challenged and expanded the role of architecture and design in our technology-oriented environment.
In this first-ever comprehensive survey of the work of this internationally recognized firm, published to accompany a traveling exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, 10 of Diller + Scofidio's most important site-specific pieces are examined, along with several of the artifacts they have created in order to examine issues of gender, surveillance, place, and travel. With essays by respected scholars and a contribution by contemporary artist Laurie Anderson, this fully illustrated volume offers a compelling look at the work of Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio.
Customer Reviews:
The Aberrant Architecture of Diller + Scofidio.......2003-06-08
The companion book to an exhibition at the Whitney, which runs through June 1, is a work of art in itself. The lenticular plastic cover shimmers enigmatically; folded pages with elliptical cuts allow you to peer inside, propelling you through the book in search of what can be imperfectly glimpsed. It's an appropriate, teasing metaphor for this collection of installations, exhibits, and as yet unrealized projects, plus Blur from the Swiss Expo 02. Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio ponder our obsession with display and call everything into question. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

Book Description
Ari Marcopoulos is best known for documenting boyish subcultures from the inside out. His work on professional snowboarding appears in Transitions and Exits and his photos on hip-hop--five years of images of the Beastie Boys--in Pass the Mic. Aaron Rose, who showed Marcopoulos at Alleged Gallery, has said of the artist's uncanny connection with one set of subjects, a crowd of New York skateboarders ten years his junior, "There was just something in his personality that said, 'Hey man, it's cool.'" It shows. Marcopoulos's self-taught snapshot style brings his subjects in close, and captures, without sentimentality or voyeurism, the intimate feeling of their daily life. Here he focuses on the subculture that is his own family. Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked is a journal-like collection of images of the accidents and pleasures of "normal" life, full of the artist's loved ones, of landscapes and of American social reality.

Book Description
This microeconomics text presents the traditional economic theories about utility and production. But it contains new theoretical functions created from specific optimization procedures. Moreover, it details clearly the common function expression forms such as Cobb-Douglas and CES in which the theory is checked. Finally, it presents empirical tests and their interpretation in relation to the theory.

Description:
This paper extends the literature on firms' behaviour under uncertainty by providing a simple framework for empirical analysis of general non-expected utility behaviour. We show that standard duality techniques can be used to derive and estimate demand and supply functions for non-expected utility maximizing firms. Moreover, the framework also provides a simple econometric test for a necessary condition for expected utility behaviour. In an empirical example we apply the model to the US Furniture and Fixtures industry and find that demand and supply functions retain all the usual ''intuitive'' properties. We test for expected utility behaviour and find that it cannot be rejected.

How to List and Sell Real Estate.......2007-07-15
Absolutely the best! A real must if you are serious about your real estate career.
Fair review.......2006-07-05
This book was o.k. I learned a few things. I thought it was a bit corny on some topics.
Great eye opener.......2006-06-02
I'm a new agent and this book is giving me the tools to understand how this industry works. AWESOME tips!!!
Good Practical Information.......2005-10-02
I really enjoyed this book and found it had many practical tips. One the best tips the author gives is to develop your "quick speak inventory." When you get a call from someone looking to buy or sell, you really need to know the inventory off-the-top-of-your-head as much as possible. The author gives a sensible way to start and build your quick speak inventory. Other great advice is given for how to deal with "old pros" and how you have to be willing to "bury the dead cats." I also like the 12 month farming almanac to keep up a marketing cycle. A truly joyful training program for the new agent and a good refresher even for old pros!
A Great Buy for the New Agent.......2003-10-11
I thought this was an excellent book. I've read it straight through and now I'm working on the Break-away schedule in the back of the book. As a new agent, it was very helpful to get an honest preview of the work it takes to be successful in this business. My broker said that I was the most prepared of any of the new agents that he'd interviewed with. I have Danielle's book to thank for that. It's worked for me so far, so now I'm going to hit the ground running with her break-away schedule! Worth the money, if you're willing to work it.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Account .......2007-05-17
This book should be a must read to all of those who have any interest in Guadalcanal. The book is written in such a way that a reader can get lost in the tale. As you read the book you will swear that you hear the guns roar, feel the jungle humidity as you turn page after page. The author was a very central figure in the battle. It is written in such a way it makes you feel you are talking to the guy. His perspectives brings a new light to understand the why behind what happened. He really covers the intangible things extremely well behind the critical decisions effecting the battle. HE even covers the important but seldom discussed things like the divisional training before the battle.
The con side of the book is it's perspective. Readers should understand he was at the top of the chain. Thus the story is told from that perspective. If a reader wants an understanding of the grunt on the line they should check out another book like the famous Guadalcanal diaries.
A definite must read for any serious student of the war.
"It was another of those beautiful evenings when even the snipers were quiet.".......2007-01-12
General Merrill B. Twinings memoir of the Guadalcanal is amazing. His knowledge of events leading up to the invasion and what happen on the island, are details few know about. He describes how a lot of the records were destroyed. His work is little known but so important to what happen. But its his easy and fun to read narrative of life leading up to and on Guadalcanal that add so much more. I salute you General, for the service to our country.
Instead of a battle quote from The General, I will quote some humour from him about a the Divisional head quarters head cook. I think he would like it.
"Butch Morgan, the world's finest cook, lived a life of quiet despair. He had replaced the blacksmith's forge with a portable Marine Corps field range called, for some strange reason, a Buzycott. Surrounded by all this splendor, poor Butch had nothing worthwhile to cook."
I will leave this with the thought that Good Marines are always hungry and will appreciate the Generals quote :)
A Marine officer's WW2 memories.......2005-07-16
"No Bended Knee: The Battle for Guadalcanal," by Merrill B. Twining, is a memoir by a U.S. Marine Corps officer who served on the headquarters staff of the First Marine Division during World War II. The book is edited by Neil G. Carey and features a foreword by Lieut. Gen. Victor H. Krulak, USMC (retired). Gen. Twining tells of the the Marines' stay in New Zealand in preparation for battle, the amphibious assault on the island of Guadalcanal, combat on the island, and the aftermath of his time on Guadalcanal.
This is a fascinating account of the massive effort to transform this island into what Twining calls "an unsinkable aircraft carrier." He offers a comprehensive and compelling look at how all the various individuals and organizations contributed to this epic effort, among them Marine aviators, Navy Seabees, the Army Air Corps, Navajo code talkers, native workers, U.S. Coast Guard personnel, Army National Guard troops, and more. He tells about American relations and encounters with British, Australian, and New Zealander personnel.
Twining writes about the diseases, deprivation, and harsh conditions faced by the heroic personnel at Guadalcanal. But it's not all grim and serious. He offers colorful portraits of the people he served with and includes funny anecdotes--the book actually made me laugh out loud. Gen. Twining skilfully weaves interesting technical details about military tactics and gear into the compelling human story. Whether writing about techniques used to cool machine guns in the heat of battle or the merits of different boat loading techniques in an amphibious assault, Twining always offers some fascinating insights into the practical realities of war.
But what really makes this book remarkable, and even fun, is Twining's tone. Yes, he is a serious military professional, with respect and affection for the many remarkable men with whom he served. But his voice is also often quite feisty and cutting. He doesn't hold back when criticizing many instances of military stupidity and short-sightedness. At times his writing even has a blisteringly satiric edge. "No Bended Knee" is a spirited and superbly written addition to the glorious canon of American military memoirs.
More like 3.8 stars.......2002-02-02
I would say more like 3.8 stars than four but it is a great book worth the read. Filled with details I hadn't heard before, like how the came to have so many .50 cal machine guns in the face of massive shortages. But, and maybe some will disagree, and maybe I'm wrong and reading too much into it, General twinning mentions through the book that he is the highest ranking survivor of the campaign. He seemed to use that to take shots at people who can no longer defend themselves, and that turned me off. I don't want to take away from what he did, it was above and beyond the call,he is a true hero and I am grateful for his service. I just felt he should have left a few of his opinions out or written the book thirty years ago.
A humble man of incredible events.......2000-02-09
General Twining's account is more than first-person as that portends one who witnessed history. He made it on Guadalcanal. This book is a superior account for one who desires to understand how war plans are made, how to train a unit and how to motivate men to do what is not normally done. He treats us to an excellent first-person insight of how one plans, equips, trains, and leads in combat. It is not a book from someone who sits in an ivory tower and has a better way of doing business. Finally, he reminds us of why we have Marines. A force that truly is ready to do our nations dirty business so we can stay free and secure.

Book Description
Thomas Coram is forever identified with the foundling hospital he established in 1739. This, however, came near the end of his life: previous records seemed few and far between until Gillian Wagner began to look at the scarce but intriguing evidence for his earlier career. As a young man Coram went to Massachusetts, where he stayed for ten years building ships in Boston and Taunton, working to further the spread of Anglicanism. He returned to England disappointed and heavily in debt. Surviving this early setback, he slowly secured for himself a place within English society through his championing of further settlements to exploit America's natural resources, and his characteristic support for radical causes.A strong believer in women's rights and equal opportunities for girls, he believed that it was due to the unique support of a group of aristocratic women - twenty-one ladies of quality and distinction - that he was granted a royal charter for his foundling hospital. Within two years of the establishment of the hospital, Coram fell out with the governors and was ejected from the governing body. His last years were clouded by disagreements and poverty, but a pension, granted in 1749, finally signalled recognition of his achievements. He died in 1751 and was buried in the chapel of his hospital.GILLIAN WAGNER was the first woman to chair the Thomas Coram Foundation, successor to the foundling Hospital (now Coram Family), and Barnardo's - whose founder's biography she has also written. Her other books include Children of the Empire, the story of children sent to live and work in Canada and Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She has had a long and noteworthy involvement with the voluntary sector (in particular, chairing the influential review into residential care, 'A Positive Choice'), and was created a Dame in 1994.

A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors
ASIN: 1552978478 |
Book Description
Birds of prey can be particularly difficult to track for a variety of reasons: - Nocturnal behavior - Remote habitats - Migratory patterns - Swift flight speeds
Hawks and Owls depicts both the subtle differences and rich diversity among these awe-inspiring birds. With crisp, clean photographs and precise identification notes, this guide makes quick and accurate classifications easier.
The families of birds includes:
- New world vultures
- Osprey, kites, eagles, hawks and allies
- Caracara and falcons
- Barn and bay owls
- Typical owls
The information on each species is concisely organized and includes the differences between male and female, seasonal and immature plumage, morphs and distinctive markings. Color pictures and range maps accompany the text. The 180 photographs from award-winning photographers show these birds in their natural environments through the seasons. Comparison pages group similar-looking birds on a single page for quick reference.
Hawks and Owls is a sturdy, pocket-sized field guide that will be indispensable to naturalists, students and birders at all levels of experience, from Florida to Ontario.
Customer Reviews:
Not only for beginners........2005-09-18
The excellent quality of this field guide matches others by Chris Earley. Being able to study the large, clear, color closeups of these species will enhance your identification skills. Seasonal range maps, special notations, calls and sounds made, plus additional comparison charts in the back make this another must have. It's lightweight, easy to carry and worth adding to your collection of field guides!
Excellent Guide for the Beginner.......2005-03-15
Birds of prey are regarded with particular fascination by many birders, but their identification presents a number of problems that can daunt the beginner. Hawks & Owls of the Great Lakes Region and Eastern North America, therefore, is an excellent introductory guide.
Each species has between two to four pages devotes to it. The majority of this space consists of photographs, depicting the species in flight and perched; save for a few, the photographs are crisp and clear. Aside from the brief introductory note and the more brief "nature notes," text is devoted to pointing out key features of the given species. Size, characteristics while perched and in flight, differences between males, females and juveniles, flight traits, and distinguishing calls are dealt with for each species, while relevant information concerning morphs and second year plummage, etc. is included when applicable.
Overall, I'm very impressed by this guide and highly recommend it to the beginning birder.
A Welcome Addition to a Crowded Field.......2004-07-09
A lingering perk: Some publishers still have my name listed as editor of the NAFA Hawk Chalk. Evidently Firefly Books is one, and I'm thankful for that. Some very good natural history and reference titles are available from this company, and they recently sent me one for review.
Chris G. Earley (the Canadian biologist who produced similar regional guides to sparrows & finches, and warblers; both titles with Firefly) makes an excellent addition to the growing list of photographic guides to North American raptors. There are some heavy hitters in this field already (e.g., Clark and Wheeler's 1995 guide and subsequent editions), which raise the bar for any newcomers. But Earley's concise volume is well constructed and worth adding to any falconer or birder's library.
Earley presents the raptors (diurnals first, then the owls) in their basic taxonomic groups or genera. He opens with a brief discussion of the guide's conventions (size comparisons, the standard icons he uses for quick reference, etc.) and good, basic advice for hawk watchers (to wit: watch the hawk first, as long as you can, then look it up). He completes his introduction with diagrams of avian anatomy as they relate to field identification, adding notes on common "hawk look-alikes" and a chart for best raptor viewing by season and species.
The following species accounts are brief, each covering two to four pages with large, well-composed color photos illustrating. A short note on natural history is typically accompanied by viewing and ID tips (some include literary quotes), and capped with the book's standardized set of icons and field notes. The author's selection of images is especially helpful, with color morphs and age-appropriate plumages displayed in easy-to-compare views. It is noteworthy that unlike some of the less qualified sources of raptor photo ID (especially those on the Web), the Cooper's hawks shown herein are actually Cooper's hawks; the Sharp-shins actually Sharp-shins. One particularly fine image (by Brian Wheeler) shows an adult male and female Cooper's standing together and dramatically captures their size dimorphism.
Earley closes this small volume with notes on how the public may help and observe raptors in their area, some suggested reading and a very helpful photographic "summing up" of included species that allows, via a series of charts, direct comparisons of similar species: the accipiters to each other, buteos to other buteos, and so on, which saves the reader the task of flipping pages to note the differences. Of course, I happily flipped between the pages anyway.

The great horned owl.......2005-08-15
Of all of the books in the Wild Bird Series, this is by far my favorite; the great-horned owl is a majestic and fascinating creature, and this book, as with all of the books in the series, does an excellent job in documenting in words and pictures its lifecycle. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it (for the pictures alone!) to anyone with an interest in owls, or birds in general.
