Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A visually stunning monograph.......2000-05-25

Despite its modest format, this elegant monograph more than does justice to Vincent James' extraordinary copper pavilions floating in a birch forest, comprehensively illustrated here with a wide range of visual materials, from early design sketches, construction photographs, and extensive working drawings to exquisite images of the finished building through four seasons of rain, mist, snow, and sun. Fold-out plans are provided in the inside cover, with a location key to all photos for readers' convenience. The graphic design of the book is clearly a labor of love, far beyond the often perfunctory standard of architectural publishing. Professional readers will regret the absence of scale information, but this is a minor lapse amidst the books many virtues.

This is a book written for mostly the realtor. It has some good references to trade publications, but falls far short of its great title. I was expecting to see some talk about future trends in the real estate industry. If you want a great book read, Real Estate Rainmaker or Walk Like a Giant Sell Like a Madman, two of my personal favorites.

2 out of 5 stars Antiquarian and dry........1998-07-10

I'd been aware of the reputation that the 1st Vermont Brigade had acquired in the Army of the Potomac so when I stumbled across this book I was pleased to give it a try.

Fortunately, the book didn't demand a great investment of time as it had a musty, antiquarian quality which suggested that Mr. Parsons had done his research but wasn't quite able to bring a detailed analysis to bear on his material. The flavor is more that of a scrapbook than a polished work.

This is sad as this is a potentially interesting and relevant story but Parsons doesn't bring his subject to life the way Alan Nolan did in "The Iron Brigade" or Terry Jones in "Lee's Tigers" (two good brigade level studies of the Civil War in Virginia).

          Book Description

James Cook, sailor, surveyor, cartographer, and explorer, was born in 1728 in Yorkshire. In the course of his illustrious career, he sailed into every ocean and was one of the first, if not the first, British explorers to set foot on most of the world's major continents. He was also the first to cross both the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.

Captain Cook's World is an atlas, chronology, and biography of the life and voyages of this celebrated explorer. A set of 128 specially drawn maps and accompanying text give a detailed overview of his life, including his early years in England, his time in the North Sea coal trade and with the Royal Navy in Canada, and his three great voyages around the world in HMB Endeavour and HMS Resolution. Included on the maps are locations visited, named, or surveyed by Cook; the routes of his voyages; and sites that have been marked in his honor, such as monuments.

Based on meticulous scholarship but aimed at a general audience, Captain Cook's World is a fascinating and accessible record of Cook's life and travels.

This book caught my eye at Pearl Harbor on my first significant visit to Hawaii a few weeks ago. Had to order it as soon as I got home. Outstanding digest of Cook's lifetime of exploration. Excellent format with its mixture of concise narrative and outstanding maps. Fascinating "read", I couldn't put it down. Excellent level of detail -- enough to be truly educational -- not so much as to overload. Emotionally moving to recall standing on Hawaiian soil and try to imagine the worlds meeting in the explorations of Cook's time. This book helped stitch my own experience to the history of the explorations.

          Book Description

A comprehensive and authoritative guide to the fascinating mysteries of bird migration.

Every year, billions of birds leave their North American breeding grounds for winter quarters farther south. That so many birds migrate so many miles, through life-threatening conditions, and to the same place each year, is simply stunning.

The editor of this important and lavishly illustrated new book has selected a cross-section of both the most typical and the most interesting migrants. Colorful maps, photographs, calendars and fact files, with easy-to-read symbols and abbreviations, present an accurate and up-to-date profile of each species.

The introduction provides comprehensive background on migration and its great mystery: how do the birds know where to go? The latest scientific discoveries are explained here.

The bulk of the book is the directory, which chronicles the routes of more than 500 species, including:

The results of new satellite tracking methods are covered, as are current environmental threats and conservation initiatives. The book closes with a comprehensive catalog of migrating species from all continents.

Very good book that explains how iceages on earth aids the evolution of birds, how birds follow SUN in daytime, Stars in the night time, if it is cloudy and are flying on Sea how they can use earth magnetic field to find thier way. This book explains where birds breed in the spring-summer times and migrate to warmer places in fall-winter. As the morning SUN warms up the ground, the air heats up. The birds use this rising hot air help them in soaring to new heights.

This book engineers bird migration, explains how migration evolved, how birds decide the time of travel, how they use the natural phenomina like thermal soaring, how the wing shape and size are related to its flight - like sea birds have long, thin wings, geese have heavy wings etc.

Then this book talks about specifics like how swans migrate, Geese migrate, Albatross migrate and you can find specifics about sea, land, north american, eurasian birds.

Scott and company have done an excellent job profiling some of the world's most fascinating bird species in an innovative format. The World Atlas of Birds is divided into sections based on zoogeographic realm (the Nearctic Realm or North America, the Ethiopian Realm or Africa, and so forth, including all the continents as well as islands and the world's oceans). Within each major "continental section," there are further subdivisions based on habitat; for instance, in North America there are seperate page entries for the tundra, taiga and boreal forest, dry oak woodlands, chapparral, prairie grasslands, Everglades, and so forth, covering all major bird habitats, including urban and suburban. Within each page or two devoted to a particular habitat, two to around ten or so bird species are profiled, each illustrated and with several paragraphs devoted to range, taxonomy, ecological role, and other interesting natural history information. By no means are all bird species for a particular habitat listed or described, just a handful of interesting and representative birds.

The World Atlas of Birds is not a dry guidebook, but truly a show case of some of the more interesting bird species around the world, filled with neat information. Read how the Magpie Goose of Australia continues to confound ornithologists; is it a swan, goose, or duck, as it possesses traits of all three groups. Learn about Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse of the harsh deserts of Africa; to bring water back to chicks in the nest, the males soak their belly feathers in water and use them as a sponge to carry water back, sometimes as much as 15 to 20 times their weight in water. Discover the enormously successful Little Owl of Europe; though 90 percent of its diet is generally invertebrates, it can expand its diet to include small birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, resulting in more than enough to eat and allowing as many as 20 breeding pairs to nest in as little as one square kilometer. Read about the Galapagos Hawk from the islands made famous by Darwin, tame enough to feed out of person's hand and known to hunt smaller birds like a falcon, catch insects like a nighjar in midflight, and feed on carrion like a vulture. Or the Poorwill of the American Southwest, one of the few birds which actually hibernate! Or the Oilbird of South America, a nocturnal cavedweller that hunts by echolocation at night!

In addition to profiles of fascinating birds from each region of the world, this book also has an introductory section discussing birds in general, such as their evolutionary history, feathers, how they fly, methods of landing, locomotion while on the ground, techniques of feeding, patterns of migration, courtship behavior and so forth, as well as a listing of some of the world's most endangered (or recently extinct) birds for the various continents and major island groups in the world. The book closes with a thorough multipage appendix, detailing every order and family of modern bird, including an illustration of a representative species, notes on habitat, nesting, feeding, food sources, social behavior, general physical characteristics for the group, range, and how many species comprise the order or family in question.

Truly this book is tremendous resource for anyone interested in birds, particulary the more fascinating facts about their life or about learning about birds from distant parts of the world. This book needs to be reprinted, it is too much a treasure not to.
