Book Description

Millions of visitors flock to New York each year to witness the excitement of Wall Street, famous for its shoulder-to-shoulder Deco towers jostling for prominence above the canyon like streets. Skyscraper Rivals is the first book to examine the architecture of Wall Street between the wars through an amazing array of contemporary and archival images and an informed discussion of the financial, geographical, and historical forces that shaped this district. The book focuses on the AIG Building—once known as the Cities Service Building—and three other major towers in the financial district, in their race to be the tallest, the most modern, and the most lavish. We meet the tycoons who paid for these structures, the architects who designed them, the workers who labored in them, and the artists and photographers who portrayed them. The economics of skyscraper construction and the real-estate market of Wall Street are explained; also included are illuminating details and anecdotes surrounding each building's history. An essay by Carol Willis, director of New York's Skyscraper Museum and author of Form Follows Finance, provides an introduction.

4 out of 5 stars Wonders of Wall Street.......2005-05-02

What a wonderful book, the vintage black and white photos are amazing. I found this book so interesting, I had no idea about this wonderful story. I recommend this book on so many levels. If you enjoy great vintage photos, interesting history, and New York..all of which I do. This books makes you appreciate the beauty of Art Deco skyscrapers and makes you sad that the more modern buildings don't even compare. I commend the authors on reviving this wonderful history and for providing wonderful vintage photos of a more stylish past.

Coincidentally, I also am in Somerville, MA. I happened upon this only because it was displayed prominently in a local Cambridge institution in Harvard Square on top of a stack of new architecture and art books that I passed by just browsing. I probably buy more computer-related books (not many at all) than architecture these days, but after looking through this I easily decided to buy it then and there. Two buildings I never previously knew existed, but are richly and lovingly documented (right down to the oddball uniforms the staff had to wear during that period in time). Equal parts historical reference and architectural anthology of the two structures. It currently occupies the top shelf of my living room bookcase.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Skyscrapers.......2001-04-19

Daniel Abramson is a first-class writer who beautifully handles a large and interesting subject. Hundreds of photos make the book highly accessible. The text perfectly complements the photographs. Outstanding.

    Book Description

This is the final report on the conservation of the wall paintings in the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of Queens, Egypt. This highly successful collaborative venture brought together scientists and conservators from all over the world to address the problems facing one of the most
beautiful monuments of antiquity. The painstaking process that saved this cultural treasure in situ is documented here by those most intimately involved in its rescue. Other articles deal with the archaeology of the Valley, the iconography of the tomb, the original techniques and materials used by
the artists, photographic documentation of the wall paintings, and literary sources for their study.

    Book Description

In a career that spanned nearly seven decades, Josef Sudek, one of the masters of twentieth-century photography, created his own solitary world of shadow and light, of theme and variation. Exquisitely reproduced in tritone, the more than one hundred images in this monograph convey the spirit of Prague as well as the spirit of Sudek.

The photographs are complemented with a text by Anna Farova, one of the foremost photography curators and writers in Eastern Europe and a longtime friend of Sudek's. She traces his life and work, beginning with the devastation of World War I, in which he lost an arm, through his development as a photographer and a central figure in Prague's artistic life. Sudek's passionate, impressionist images, as well as his penchant for exploration, earned him the affectionate title "Poet of Prague."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best photographer, hands down........2007-05-21

Josef Sudek was an amazing man, talent, and visionary. This monograph is one of very few that were widely distributed to help tell his story and share his hard-earned images. Imagine, Aperture, a magazine with only 2 issues per year, dedicated to the best of all things photographic, devoted an entire year of publication to Sudek. My favorite mental image of Sudek is of he himself finally shooting his muse, a church in Prague, his only arm franticly fanning up dust with a card as he rushed from this beam of light to another, so as to give the light volume in the image. You see, Sudek was a very patient master... until the image was ready to be taken. He might scout a location for years before shooting it, waiting for just the right time of year, just the right angle of light, and just the right atmospheric conditions around his subject. Then when the day came to shoot, he was a focused madman. In my eyes, Sudek IS photography, and this monograph is the most inexpensive, most thorough background of the man and his work. Although not the most thorough collection of his work, it is an excellent introduction that will leave you searching for more about him. Good luck, and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Sudek at his best........2007-01-11

Sudek inspired the entire world of his countrymen and women, and now we can also join in the feast of his imagery. Astounding in breadth and scope, these poetic photographs reveal a time gone, yet eerily present. If you write and photograph as well, this book is pure inspiration. Dark, moody, yet uplifting. Speaks to the treasure of time as it is captured with quiet energy and subtle tone and value.
He lost one arm in World War I, but that did not stop him from using a camera to record the world he witnessed all the rest of his life. His images of Prague are arresting and pull you into the streets as he saw them. Very very good book; a treasure to own.

    Book Description

Josef Sudek was the premier Czech photographer of his day, and remains one of the century's most fascinating and admired photographers. Sudek was born in 1896 in Kolín, just west of Prague, and as a young man was badly wounded in World War I. He began his photographic career in 1920--at the dawn of the new republic of Czechoslovakia--with socially observant pictures in the tradition of the turn-of-the-century school of Pictorialism. He did not achieve his real creative breakthrough, however, until the 1940s, in the shadow of yet another Great War. Sudek's quiet, often hermetic work accomplishes that rare aesthetic mission--his images create a space of beauty that is at once subtly and overwhelmingly beautiful, a space of respite from the violence of the world outside the frame. This new volume documents Sudek's masterpieces of the 1940s and 1950s, including his ''studio pictures,'' landscapes, still lifes, and architectural photography, in beautiful reproductions, along with critical and biographical texts. Hardcover, 8.75 x 11.25 inches, 160 pages, illustrated throughout.

                    Product Description

Exhibition catalog. Published in a small and limited print run. A handsome production: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with large flaps, as issued. Photographs by Josef Sudek. Edited by Manfred Heiting. Introduction and Notes by Anna Farova. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition of the same name in 1994 through 1996. Presents an important aspect of the great Czech photographer's work, which is now universally recognized as among the finest photography ever taken anywhere in the 20th century. Josef Sudek remained in his native Czechoslovakia throughout his long and highly productive life, spiriting out prints of his work, many of them just single copies, to his friends in New York City. A reclusive man who shunned publicity and lived modestly, Sudek's inner life was clearly the inspirational source of his great work. Many people when they first see a Josef Sudek photograph are moved to tears. Whether he did landscapes, portraits, nudes, still lifes or snapshots of people, the photographer left his unmistakable mark on the image. The "pigment print" process is based on a very complex (and tedious) technical procedure that is also known as the carbro process, which the meticulous Farova explains at the end of the book. The results are visible on the pages of this book, stunning, moving and inimitable. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century.

                      Book Description

This book presents startling evidence that state monopolies can produce better outcomes than the free market. It provides an empirical comparison of the property insurance market in five European countries: Britain, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Germany. The market and cost structures of
insurers in each country are described, and particular features of each market and the outcomes for customers examined. The regulatory frameworks vary widely from country to country and so do the market outcomes, both in terms of premium level and in terms of available insurance cover.

Sylvia Carvajal takes a long and hilarious look at male-female realtionships in Women Aren't From Venus. The bestseller Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars, written by a man, exhibited some real gender bias. Carvajal finally has written the other side of the story.
Carvajal knows that men are highly irrational creatures, after all her book is inspired by true stories. Her tales show what Everywoman is up against when she consents to interact with males. She looks at male behavior, not with anger, but with astonishment, and, okay, occasional disgust. But men are good for laughs. All of us princesses need a court jester, anyway, along with the time to read Women Aren't from VeEnus, Men are Pigs.

This is not a man-hating book!

While at first glance, my impression was a book on fluff stuff or man-hating--nothing could be further from the truth. This book is insightful, it's smart, it's funny, it's well-written and it's about women sharing with women about the things men have done in their lives that weren't positive or loving. It should come with a warning label--Warning! This book could change your soul!

                          What therapy?!

While you may have been through some of these things or know someone who has and can/will identify with the emotions that this book pulls from you, I don't think that I was ready for what truly happened inside of me. It's like a support group sandwiched between Hot pink bookcovers!

If you are a woman with issues (and who isn't), then you should pick up this book if only to identify and purge your demons...and laugh and cry and--heal. The stories are so real, the women our friends and the reactions sometimes not what you'd expect.

I especially liked the chapter that speaks of women in "princess" form, which really says to me, "hold yourselves in higher esteem, ladies". If you expect the best, you get the best. And there's nothing wrong with expecting the best! Not only is she speaking of the men, but from ourselves and each other.

Thank you Ms. Carvajal, for such a wonderful read. I love it!

                            Book Description

The transatlantic relationship is under serious strain. The end of the Cold War, Europe's continuing integration, and the new array of threats confronting the West have led Americans and Europeans alike to question the durability and utility of the Atlantic alliance. The transatlantic rift that opened over the war in Iraq significantly intensified these concerns.

This Task Force, established by the Council on Foreign Relations, examines the sources of recent tensions between the United States and Europe and lays out an agenda for renewing the Atlantic partnership. Led by Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, the former secretary of state and national security adviser, and current chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc., and Dr. Lawrence H. Summers, the former secretary of the treasury and current president of Harvard University, the Task Force concludes that the United States and Europe should take advantage of their compatible interests and complementary capabilities to guard and extend the values and principles that continue to define the Atlantic community and to meet threats to their common purpose.

The Task Force, directed by Council Senior Fellow and Director of European Studies Charles A. Kupchan, makes specific recommendations for bridging the transatlantic divide, such as reaching agreement on new "rules of the road" governing the use of military force; forging a common policy toward irresponsible states; increasing cooperation through multilateral institutions; developing a common approach to the greater Middle East; adapting NATO to new geopolitical realities; and liberalizing and expanding the global economy.

                              Book Description

This is the first full-length study of Zhang Binglin (1869-1936) in English. Drawing on both Chinese and English sources, Young-tsu Wong's explores the life and work of one of modern China's most outstanding thinkers, scholars, and political activists--a man whose intellectual prestige and
influence attracted educated Chinese towards the republican revolution during the closing decade of the Qing dynasty. One of the first studies to analyse and comment neutrally on the range of views Zhang held, the book challenges prevailing views on the subject, and contributes to a better
understanding of the dynamics of Chinese revolution. It sheds new light on the political landscape of Republican China and on hitherto obscure personalities and events.

5 out of 5 stars very useful reference book.......2001-12-05

I bought this book not so much because I want to go birding, but because it lists over 110 bird refuges, conservation areas, creeks, forest preserves and tall grass praries, many of which I know I have driven by on the highway without realizing that just down a state or county road is natural habitat full of wildlife. Some of the areas covered will be familiar to anyone who has lived in Illinois (Morton Arboretum, Fermi Lab, Jackson Park, Montrose Harbor, Chicago Botanic Garden, Starved Rock State Park) but the others are probably new to most people -- Meredosia Wildlife Refuge, Midewin Tallgrass Prarie, Pecatonica River Forest Preserve, Kickapoo State Park, Mermet Lake, etc.

The entries are divided into regions (northeast, northwest, west-central and southern) with each featuring a map of the area with directions, and a list and description of the birds that live or migrate through there. There are also black & white photographs and beautifully-detailed sketches of birds scattered throughout the text. The entries include walking or driving tours and information about the best time of the year to visit the site as well as general information on the conditions of the area (with instructions on when you need to bring your own water, insect repellant and food), what times of the year it may be closed and whether there are picnic/camping areas. In some cases the history of the area is given (for example, the fact that Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area and Forest Preserve is named after a Native American chief who lived there with his tribe in the 1830s). Each entry also includes the name of the park district that supervises the area and the nearest town.

The book ends with a checklist of birds so you can keep track of the ones you have seen, a list of extinct and endangered birds, the official form for reporting a rare bird, a bibliograpy and a list of federal, state and county contacts with phone numbers and addresses. This is a terrific reference book as well as guidebook. I'm grabbing my binoculars, a picnic lunch, this book and heading out to explore the rest of Illinois!

                                5 out of 5 stars Birding Illinois.......2000-04-06

Every state should have a bird-finding guide this good! The author has done a superb job in presenting not only some of the more well-known Illinois birding locations, but also provides many areas that even most of Illinois' more experienced birdwatchers will find new and well worth exploring. Birders from outside of Illinois will probably be very surprised to learn of the variety of habitats and birds that this state has to offer once one leaves the seemingly birdless "corn and soybean desert" that many see from the interstates that crisscross the state. For instance, the chances of seeing a Mississippi Kite in southern Illinois are "good", as are such diverse species as Snowy Owl, Ross's Goose, and Connecticut Warbler! Illinois may be one of the best locations to see the elusive Smith's Longspur in the lower 48 states, and this guide will tell you when, where and how to see one! This long overdue site finding guide to Illinois' best birding locations is the first to cover the entire state in 25 years! And it is much more than a site guide! Only somewhat larger than many field guides, it is none-the-less easily manageable in the field (or in your car), and one should not be without this book while birding the states highways and byways. The author provides maps as well as written descriptions on how to bird the areas, but one of the best features of this book is the list of "key birds" to be found at each location at the beginning of each site account. In addition, the "Seasonal Distribution Charts" at the back of the book are the first of their kind for books on Illinois' birds, which attempt to cover the whole state, and make this an invaluable addition to this admirable reference work! The contributions from many of the state's most experienced birdwatchers and ornithologists from all corners of the state, guarantees the accuracy and thoroughness of the areas covered. Birders will find the sections on "Authors Favorite Sites", "Illinois' Specialty Birds", and the "Birding Calender" particularly helpful additions compared to the more normal bird-finding guides, and should make it a much more easy task in planning their birding trip, including exactly where and when to go to add that particular bird species that is still missing from their list! The well chosen photographs and exemplary line drawings not only make an aesthetically nice addition to the book, but give examples not only of some of the more typical birds to be found in Illinois but also show the diversity of avian life to be seen throughout the state. Not only is this book factually correct, but the well-written prose of this obviously talented journalist is very descriptive of the birds and birding destinations, and almost transports one to each birding hotspot. Aside from the usual typos and a few small errors in a few of the maps, this book is an excellent "read", and a MUST for EVERY birdwatcher traveling to or residing in the state of Illinois!

                                Book Description

Surrounded on three sides by three major rivers, with both upland and lowland forest and with dramatic topographic relief in the unglaciated Shawnee Hills, southern Illinois offers a wide variety of habitats and birds unusual to Illinois and the Midwest in general.

                                W. Douglas Robinson documents current knowledge of the birds of southern Illinois by surveying both the published literature on the subject and the unpublished field notes of active observers, field notes summarizing many important observations that have never before been easily available.

Compared with studies in central and northern Illinois, there have been few active field observers in the south; yet the contributions of those who have worked in southern Illinois have been considerable. Robinson displays their efforts convincingly in this book. And to stimulate further research, Robinson points out gaps in current knowledge. Throughout the species accounts, in particular, he discusses what is missing or unclear regarding the status and migratory dates of birds.

Designed to help bird watchers in the field and at home discover the significance of their observations, this book includes information on early arrival and late departure dates of migrants, the highest reported single-day counts in each season, and records of all vagrants. In addition, Robinson includes maps and guides to some of the best birding areas in the region to encourage birders and others to explore the many birding and scenic attractions in southern Illinois.

Robinson has produced a definitive reference for ornithologists and amateur bird watchers alike, conservation and government agencies, college students in biology, and future researchers who wish to determine the status and abundance of southern Illinois birds.
