As an artist who uses color in my work, this book has been invaluable. The color wheel has always been my primary reference for color combinations; however, since reading Johannes Itten book, an entirely new world of understanding and enlightenment has evolved. I love this book for how it has enriched my knowledge and passion for color.

Eye-opener on harmony of colours.......2006-06-27

This book of Johannes Itten is a good example of the use of colour in the antroposofic way. He connects the different colours with moods and feelings, religious symbols and even gives it a spiritual dimension. For me it was an eye-opener on the aspect of harmony. Itten emphasizes that the eye and mind are always looking for balance, harmony in the sense of a grey-tone. If a work of art does not reflect this kind of harmony, for instance because of a distonality in the use of colours, the eye and mind get restless and agitated. But if used on purpose this aspect of colour gives a work of art a very strong impact and makes it a masterpiece.[...].

This book might be expensive, but what do you expect for such genius. I love this book, and would recommend it to anyone into color theroy. Itten is a color genius, and this book proves it.

I'd studied physiology and neuroscience, later switching careers from a medical path to that of a designer. I've dived into many sources for my self-education/training. Itten is the grand-master of color; no other book I've read compares to those of Itten. His teachings have enlightened me in ways that I'm amazed by, touching on scientific, psychological, behavioral, and the most personal aspects of color as a study and an experience. It's changed the way I look at my environment, and it's changing the way I use color in my work as a designer.

I'm so impressed with the value this book has had to me, that I bought Itten's book on Form and Design, even though I didn't necessarily feel lacking on those aspects of design. It's rather because of the likelihood in the quality and richenss of knowledge I'll gain, as I did from this book.

Great Art Ideas!.......2001-07-14

I was the director of a summer art program for a number of years and always tried to find crafts that the boys may try. There are a numbr of projects I intend to try with the kids, and I think the boys may even enjoy them! This book includes many fun ideas for paper mache projects and the colorful pictures add to the inspiration. If you are looking for some fun and messy projects, this book has some great ones!

Great colour pictures.......2002-01-30

For those who are in to Military Miniatures, this book has some of the best colour plates of all uniforms worn by those units involved at Isandlwana & Rorkes Drift, Zulu, British and Colonial. Ian Knight knows his topic well (even interviewing family of battle participants) and doesnt present the British forces in a negative light like some other books covering the debacle at Isandlwana. Knight points out the various communication and resource issues that lead to many of the problems that day 22 Jan 1879. A large book (coffee table copy) easy to read, broken up into specific sections (The camp, leaders, escape etc). Along with the Plates, there are some excellent B/W pictures and photographs rarely (if ever) seen in other books on the subject.

The author is a gifted writer. He is very observant and skilled in describing his surroundings. This strength, however, is also his downfall. He paints a word picture of nearly every situation he encountered--often in excrutiating detail. Frankly, it begins to get tedious. In addition, while I generally enjoy tales this this one, I found it hard to connect with him. There's a detached, flat affect quality to his writing. He's not passionate, just obsessed. I tried to like him and feel the power of his journey, but just couldn't get excited about it.

... travelling the lengths of continents and seeking those conditions most favourable for living and reproducing. William Fiennes travelled with the wild geese of North America but the phenomenon he describes is equally evident elsewhere in northern latitudes. The arctic (or near arctic) breeding geese are a most important sign of an approaching spring and thaws many a slumbering soul.
This is a gem among books and will surely inspire many a reader as well as relaxing minds to join the journey of the birds.

A very tedious book........2005-04-29

This book could have been written easily in half the pages.

The parts about birds are interesting and informative. As are the parts about him using his journey as rehabilitative therapy. But, my gosh, this writer describes practically everything about everyone and everything he meets- or sees. And these people are not instrumental either to the story or in moving the story along. I mean he's writing about other passengers on buses, bus drivers, and many others and he doesn't interact with the great majority of them. It is useless description that just bogs the story down. And there's some of it, seemingly, on every page.

Even though it is non-fiction, there are ways to create tension. Another book on birds, RED TAILS IN LOVE about the hawks in New York's Central Park was a thrilling story. A real cliffhanger. This SNOW GEESE book is a plodding story.

If it wasn't our book club's book of the month, I wouldn't have finished it. It is one of the most boring books I've read in a long time.

Book groups in Austin are loving the book. Jean sleeping with St. Joseph and hitting that whizzing forehand in her holy nun garb are delightful stories. We can not wait until Wiliam writes another book to help us all journeying to find home. He is a most gifted writer and sensitive author. I hope it becomes a movie someday.
