Great book; found it very useful for a presentation on Bauhaus.

Modernism V2.0.......2006-04-06

Today's design students are overloaded with too many skills and ideas to absorb. Unfortunately, as students race into the future, it seems that subjects like Design History are the first to suffer. This book addresses that problem. You could think of it as the 'cliff notes' of Modernism. It's concise, fun to read, and beautifully illustrated. You can read it in one sitting. It connects Modernist ideas across design, art and architecture from the Bauhaus until now. Along the way, Smock pokes fun at some of the more pretensious characters and positions of Modernism. Most of all, he puts the ideas and forms of Modernism in context for our time. The author clearly has a deep appreciation for his subject, and argues that we still have much to learn from the spirit and optimism of Modernism. For students, this book should help to inspire new interest in what Modernism was/is all about. It suggests that rather than seeing a dusty footnote in history, maybe it's something we should pick up, polish, and re-examine. As an intro, this book should inspire further study for young designers.

Beautifully illustrated design manifesto.......2006-02-01

Sprinkled liberally with the author's own pencil sketches of famous architects, buildings and other design icons, "The Bauhaus Ideal" is a small book chock full of unique perspectives on the history of design. It is pitched at the lay reader or college student - even someone with no interest whatsoever in Bauhaus or architecture would find this an absorbing read, which is why I think it would do very well in an intro liberal arts course for college freshmen hoping to pick up some ideas about modern art and architecture before they branch off onto the irreversible "med school" or "law school" track. It reads rather like the notebooks of da Vinci because of the deft pencil sketches; it also reminds me of John Ruskin's manifesto, "The Stones of Venice". Smock would very conversationally talk about an architect or a building, then throw in a little sketch - the effect is like dropping in on a professor who really knows his stuff but is cool enough to not beat you over the head with it. Smock is good enough to be a professional illustrator. In a few lead strokes he would capture the spirit of a real person's face, or the bare branches of winter. For the non-lay reader, the architect, or "those in the know", this book reaffirms one's thoughts about the giants in the architecture world and asks provoking questions about why things are what they are. All in all, a real treat and worth the price.

Thought-provoking & funny.......2005-01-15

This is the book for people who are interested in design (i.e. buy things)
but don't read design magazines. Thought-provoking and funny.

Good book for beginner photographers........2000-07-07

I recently purchased the Minolta XTsi/HTsi guide, and I beleve it was very helpful. The Minolta XTsi camera I purchased is the first camera I have ever really handeled, and the book helped me understand what each button did, and how to use each function. It also helped me learn how to create better photographs with my camera. I really reccommend it if you have purchased either camera or are thinking about it. It has helped me out alot.

Very Simple Guide Book.......1999-07-22

This book is too simple, does not tell much about each function of the camera. The manual that came with the camera is actually enough.

It is alright to buy this book if you loss the manual.

Aggregation lies at the heart of macroeconomics. Economists using such aggregates as capital, investment, labor, and even output or GNP assume that such constructions have a sound analytic foundation. The question of the existence of aggregate production functions is not only part of the foundation of macroeconomic theory and policy but also played a central role in the "Cambridge vs. Cambridge" debate, which challenged long-held assumptions about the foundations of neoclassical microeconomics.

In this third collection of his essays, Franklin M. Fisher settles the question of the conditions for the existence of aggregate production functions. He examines the conditions for approximate aggregation and, through simulation experiments, considers why aggregate production functions appear to work in practice. He also explores related topics involving price aggregation and aggregation in international trade.

This is a must have for all new parents. Dr. Peebles explains in a fun informative way what life will be like with a baby- both inside and outside. A perfect new baby gift. 10 stars.

A round of applause for Paul Peebles, M.D........2002-05-24

A round of applause for Paul Peebles, M.D. for sharing his 30+ years of experience and observations with us in Oh, My Gosh, We're Pregnant! As a new mom who has read everything I could get my hands on, I'd say this book is a must-read for expecting and (very) new parents.

Peebles identifies the ups and downs of pregnancy and our newborn's early days, for both mother and father, and offers valuable problem solving and coping mechanisms. Minor irritations of occasional wordiness and cumbersome structure are more than offset by terrific content. Highlights include calming techniques (that actually work!) for the high-strung newborn, personal and professional anecdotes, and a continuing emphasis on the loss of control new parents feel, leading to, especially among us control freaks, an incredible sense of vulnerability that comes with the new baby in our lives. By preparing us for this loss of control (of everything from the health and temperment of our newborn to the state of our house and time of our dinner), Peebles equips us to feel confident and enjoy pregnancy and the early weeks of our newborn's life.

I can honestly say I've enjoyed my role as new mom more because of this book. Buy it, read it cover to cover, and pass it on to your pregnant friend.

A gold mine of information for new parents.......1999-09-04

As a pediatrician with forty two years in primary pediatric practice, I find this to be the best book I have read for new parents..

The author describes the ups and downs parents have as they experience life with a new baby. No matter what one's mood or reaction is, readers will find information here that will convince them that they are quite normal. He even mentions that many men have morning sickness and food fads during a wife's pregnancy!.

Interspersed with the description of the common moods experienced by new parents, there are many important practical recommendations for caring for a new baby. I can think of no better gift for expectant couples.
