i was most impressed by this truly valuable publication - a must for anyone's library interested in efficient design, architecture and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting cross section of contemporary architecture! .......2006-08-28

This book is consistently wonderful. As a collection of small scale architectural works, it illustrates that small in size can be large in ambition and accomplishment. Sirefman uses the guest house to represent an important cross section of contemporary architecture, and the book is a gem.

The guest house (as a "type") is generally considered second string to the main house architecturally, but this collection argues that it doesn't have to be. The guest house's transitory, secondary nature allows it a freedom that a primary house does not have. The projects in the book have playfulness, eccentricity, quirks, and drama (sometimes all at once) that are immediately compelling. But the dialogue between main house and guest house is not the primary emphasis of the book - instead the best projects here are visual essays about the guest house's place in the garden. Many projects here play with the question that F L Wright asked Philip Johnson at the Glass House: "Well, are we inside or are we outside?"

High points include the luminous and dazzling Mountain Tree House by Mack Scogin, or the brooding, poetic entries from two Japanese architects (Satoshi Okada, Atelier Hitoshi Abe).

The selection of projects is refreshingly international. Although weighted toward the New York area, the most compelling projects are far from the madding crowd - coming from Mittagong, Australia, Dillard, Georgia, or Duluth, Minnesota. It's an interesting statement on the current dispersal of design talent that what's shown here from Oklahoma City, for example, is more accomplished than anything on the pages by New York architects.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for Beginners.......2005-01-12

This book has been a great help. I live in BC and have wanted to try to capture the ocean and landscape with watercolours and with Mr. Reid's help I'm one step closer. The book presents clear and simple pictures with limited colours to get started very easily.

5 out of 5 stars A difficult subject made approacable.......2000-05-12

In this day of abstract and cerebral art it is often difficult to garner the skills needed to paint watercolors of natures' most challenging subject matter:water and snow. Jack Rieds' book is a wonderful introduction to this otherwise daunting subject. Every thing a beginner needs to know about painting snow and several different forms of water is covered in this volume of the Watercolor Basics series; from materials to application. The illustrations are lovely and not unduly difficult; yet capture the fundamentals of the subject matter beautifully. If you want to paint the winter snows, spring thaws and summers at the beach, this is the book for you, particularly beginners.

    Book Description

Using highly detailed color photographs, John Ganis has chronicled the effects of development and extraction industries in every region of the Continental United States over a period of seventeen years. The subjects of Ganis's images are for the most part flagrantly clear-abandoned wrecks, desolate strip mines, clear-cut forests, industrial parks, landfill sites, and the flattening of terrain for housing -developments-and just as flagrantly disturbing. This is a thesaurus of our "civilized" incursions into the wildness of nature, a charting of our debris-strewn topographies, and a cogent report on our abdication of any reverence -towards the land. In an introductory essay, Robert -Sobieszek, from Los Angeles County Museum, gives an insightful overview of the historical responses to the American landscape and places the work of John Ganis within the context of "the new American pastoral." In 1989, Ganis entered into a collaborative exchange with the noted anthropologist Dr. Stanley Diamond, who wrote the poetry for this book in response to John Ganis's photographs. They represent some of his last and previously unpublished poetic work.

John Ganis established his reputation with work on -important environmental issues. His color photographs of land use in America have been exhibited widely and are in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Center for Creative Photography, The Detroit Institute of Arts, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art etc.

He is currently professor and photography department chair at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

    5 out of 5 stars A moving landscape.......2005-08-16

The cover of this book has the perfect image to sum up the contents, a family are perched on a rock taking in the stunning aura of South Dakota's Badlands National Park yet behind them, at the top of a gully and going down is some sort of large metal tubing, what it's for doesn't really matter because it perfectly captures the book's contents: the hand of man on the American landscape.

What I thought was so fascinating about the book was the type of image John Ganis has captured, basically the ordinary everyday environmental impact of industry and commerce and not the pollution and devastation that other photographers have exposed, like David Hanson's amazing aerial work in 'Waste Land' (ISBN 0893817260).

Ganis has searched out construction sites, mines, housing subdivisions, junkyards, landfills, highway furniture stored in fields, plenty of logging and more. The eighty-five images are spot on and just super compositions, which says a lot because what Ganis shoots can't be moved around or changed for a better angle, this is the outdoors: take it or leave it.

The book's production is first-class, landscape with the photos printed in 200dpi on quality paper, a short caption below each image. This revealing collection of images shows how the landscape is being changed day after day in the interests of the American dream.

Retailing in Asia is currently undergoing a major process of internationalization. Retailers from Europe and North America are entering the Asian market and stimulating changes to the traditional retail structures: public policy agencies are considering what types of intervention are appropriate; and all of this is affecting fundamentally the managerial culture of retailing in the region. This book brings together a range of experts in retail research, mostly drawn from across Asia, who provide origingal, in-depth, analysis of this key development. It explores the conflicts and benefits that arise as retailing is Asia becomes internationalized.

                            4 out of 5 stars D-Day Normandy.......2004-01-24

D-Day Normandy writen by Donald M. Goldstein, Katherine V. Dillion, and J. Michael Wenger is a great book for WWII buffs. It is more a fact based book than most novels. Which is alright because it has hundred of great pictures from the time. It also gives detaled information from what lead to Americans landing at Normandy. To D-Day its self and the machines used in that time. So I give this book two thumbs up.

                            4 out of 5 stars If A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words.............2000-01-05

Photos and more photos, that's what you have in this book. There must be a thousand of them, but I didn't count them.

This book takes the reader by the hand, in a bit of elementary school field trip fashion, and literally walks through Operation Overlord. The text is not over anyone's head, and always relates to the photos. The photos then tell the story, along with the captions which point out interesting, easy to overlook, details. It's almost like reading three books at once, the text, the photos, and the captions. But it's very educational and entertaining.

You'll see every form of naval lading craft ever used. Planes, guns, ships, you name it and they have a picture of it in this book. Allied personnel, and German personnel, all called "Antagonists", the title of the first chapter. There's even a great picture of General Patton inspecting a P-51, without a Helmet!

The book is wonderfully organized and laid out. It reads very quickly, despite all the bouncing around you'll do between pictures, captions, and text. Every photo is marked in the text at it's proper location. When the author talks about Churchill, then there is a note to look at the picture of Churchill. It's actually fun, if such a grave subject can be fun.

Read, or look at, this book. It's amazing how you'll begin to see the events, machines, people in a much clearer light. The massiveness of the event will become clear, and the images will tell you the story. If only all the D-Day photos were in one volume.....

4 out of 5 stars Collector's Item for any WWII "Buff"........1998-04-21

The book does a credible job of providing a history of the events and people that led up to the invasion, as well as the invasion itself. But its real strength is as a pictorial history and resource. In this arena it is unsurpassed!

                              Book Description

This volume gives the history of the six parishes in Westbury hundred and the sixteen in Whitstone hundred. Both hundreds abut the River Severn. Westbury hundred, on the right bank, adjoins the Forest of Dean: the landscape is relatively wild and large areas of woodland survive. The hundred lies in two parts, including at its north-eastern end the crossing of the Severn at Over Bridge and at its south-western end the crossing of the Wye at Chepstow Bridge. The new Severn Bridge, replacing the ancient ferry from Beachley to Aust, crosses the south--western extremity. Most of the parishes are large, and settlement within them tends to be scattered. Highnam Court (in Churcham parish) and the former Westbury Court, from which the unusual water-garden survives, were two of the county's more notable country houses. The small town of Newnham, squeezed between river and forest, had a Norman castle and was the place from which Henry II left England for his conquest of Ireland. The history of Lancaut, the remote little parish lying on the Wye outside Offa's Dyke, is included in this volume under Tidenham. Whitstone hundred, on the left bank of the Severn, is mainly flat agricultural land, but the eastern parishes climb the Cotswold escarp-ment and were part of the Stroud Valley clothing district. The area is one of varied settlement and economy, including riverside hamlets as in Longney and Saul, former weaving hamlets like Randwick, and scattered moated sites, such as those of Haresfield, Moreton Valence, and Quedgeley. Among buildings that recall monas-tic connexions are the fine 12th-century church of Leonard Stanley, the great tithe-barn at Frocester, and the manor-house at Standish; secular buildings include among country houses Hardwicke Court, Frampton Court, Whit-minster House, and the demolished 19th-century mansion at Fretherne, and large clothing mills at Eastington, King's Stanley, and Stonehouse.
