This book had benefited me in my daily job. Our systems involving every area of MBS/ABS, and I could easily look up the area like Prepayment, Default/Loss, alt-A, HELOC, 125 LTV. Without this book, I could hardly understand the business logic behind the C++ code. Now with this book, I could finish my job at light speed.

Interesting, strange, but ultimately unsatisfying.......2003-03-31
If you are looking for a detailed account of the Cowpens and/or Guilford Courthouse battles, look elsewhere (I much prefer Babit's "A Devil of a Whipping" for Cowpens). But there is a fair amount of detail of the marching and skirmishing between the two. Unfortunately, the few maps do little to support the text. The Guilford Courthouse map is cramped by trying to show the entire battle on one page and DOESN'T HAVE A SCALE. Considering that an entire chapter is devoted to Cowan's Ford, one might expect it to show up somewhere on a map. It would also have been nice to see the march routes on a map. The primary redeeming social value of the book is the last chapter on "The Lessons." The author does some quality analysis of what could have been learned.

The book is excellent in most respect. But like all of these types it doesn't provide much help in actually identifying a bird. You can't go from "small-brown-stripes on side-purple head-green feet-S. Az area to Pages xxx & xxx for the types.
This is the book for people who like birds but didn't major in biology.......2007-08-24
So we have this pond in our backyard and it's attracted alot of birds. My husband and I have no idea what species they are or what they eat since we work in the judicial system not for the Forest Service. The solution seems pretty simple...go to Amazon and buy a bird book. So, after reviewing several options; many of which seem to require at least a Master's level education in biology and years of field experience in identification, I wildly and in some what a desperate state picked this book. What a relief when it arrives and lo and behold it is written in English with lots of pictures! We use this book at least 3-4 times per week. It is very user friendly and a great resource for the average person who wants to know what to call the yellow bird eating all the sunflower seeds...besides greedy.

I really appreciate the drawings in this book. They are much more helpful than pictures. Also the habits are helpful when trying to identify a particular species when there are similar ones in your area.

This is an excellent book if you are a bird watcher. My husband received a copy of this book as a gift a couple of years ago and has since worn it out,that was the purpose of purchasing a new copy.

As someone new to birdwatching I needed to find some good field guides at several points on my recent World Cruise and I bought Peterson's Western Birds to use for my visit to San Francisco. I found this a very impressive book, considering the fact that it covers 700 species in such a small book. The illustrations are excellent and arrows show clearly the distinguishing points to look for with closely related species. They include summer and winter variations, juvenile plumages and birds in flight.
It is not a full field guide and does not give details of habitat but it has all the essentials for identification. It is slightly irritating to have the maps in a separate section at the end but this must aid the concise nature of the book.
All in all I would recommend it as a handy pocket guide to take in the field, supplemented by an alternative source of fuller details. Even the hardbacked version is fairly portable. Excellent value for money.

Be aware that this is not a comprehensive guide to every bird you'd find in AZ and NM. However, if you want most of them, this is a handy, pocket-sized guide (4x6 inches) with nice photos. The layout provides two facing pages per species -- a photo on the left and description/text on the right. Every text page has a color-coded map showing EXACTLY where the bird is found and in what season. Many pages also have a small inset photo (at the bottom of the page) of a similar-looking bird, with a short note about it.

This book is in beautiful condition and is one I had been searaching for! Very concise and easy to use.
A very useful general guide.......2003-10-30
This isn't a guide for the serious birdwatcher: it covers the 140 most common birds of New Mexico, not every bird that you'll ever see in the state, and the descriptions of the species vary considerably in depth. Also, although the photos are generally very good, some don't show the significant details that help you to recognize a particular species: the photo of the scaled quail, for example, doesn't convey the bird's distinctive "cotton-top" look, and often the head is the only part you can see as it scuttles away through the brush.
On the other hand, this is an easy-to-use, convenient guide for the casual birdwatcher or the curious tourist. Birds are listed by color, and, in species where the sexes are different colors, both males and females are shown. The maps of the bird's distribution in the state are helpful too, as the regional maps in other popular field guides don't show this level of detail. This isn't the guide I'll take with me on my annual birding pilgrimage to the Bosque del Apache, but I'll keep it in my car and lend it to my guests from out of state.
