      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good For Beginners.......2007-01-10

I wish the chapters on design and composition were more in depth, but overall the book was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Much More than an "How to Book".......2003-10-01

Michelle Temares' "How to Design your Own Painting Projects" is truly a wonderful book from the beginning to the end. When I ordered the book, I really didn't know what to expect, since it's the first of its kind on the market. Beginning and advance artists/designers will come away with new ideas and inspiration for their own artwork.

Michelle Temares helps the artist/designer to see "What is Good Design", "Composition", and provides inspiration for "Developing a Color Scheme". Before I purchased this book, I would of never thought about using Graph Vellum (Chapter 1, Design Supplies) for designing and now that's all I use to create my own artwork.

I give this book a "5" star rating and everyone that purchases this book will learn something new. Michelle Temares has proven that anyone can be an artist/designer through this remarkable written book.

        Book Description

Step by step, The Artist's Studio: How to Build Your Own Professional Studio Easel will help you build the professional studio easel that every working artist needs. The emphasis in this book is on the practical, requiring only a rudimentary knowledge of woodworking and the most basic hand and power tools. A master list of materials and supplies has been provided, as well as milling specifications. Unlike other woodworking books, the instructions for building each major component of the easel are separated into chapters. Each chapter is set up in two sections. The first section introduces basic woodworking techniques, and discusses some common problems and solutions. The second section is devoted to the actual project, detailing the necessary tools, lumber and hardware for building that particular component, as well as giving the building instructions. Diagrams are included for each component, as well as sprinklings of advice, suggestions and observations from the author.

Sturdy, stable and attractive, this professional studio easel is easy and inexpensive to build. The sliding angle adjuster allows the artist to paint at any angle from 80 to 110 degrees. The easel can support canvases up to 60 inches in height with the dimensions given, or the height can be increased by lengthening the center support by the desired number of inches. The 26-inch paint tray acts as a convenient shelf to hold tubes of paint, brushes, rags, or whatever else you might need. And when your painting is completed, just remove the two carriage bolts on the sliding angle adjuster and the easel folds flat for convenient storage.

No other text I have used presents such a broad range of concepts and techniques with such a minimum of technical jargon. Clearly written and well-illustrated with student work, students feel like "I can do this!" They are also inspired by the many appropriate quotes.

              Book Description

The allocation of limited public and private resources depends on reliable data and empirical analysis, and The Future of Philanthropy is filled with hard-to-find data, graphs, and charts, as well as full citation and source lists at the end of each chapter. It raises unsettling questions about the very assumptions upon which nonprofits are built and financed and about the future of nonprofit and philanthropic decision-making. Written to provoke thoughtful debate, as well as illuminate elusive objective data, this resource also sheds new light on the challenges that face the nation’s "Third Sector" as public and governmental regulation has become more focused on the transparency and accountability of philanthropy and its recipients.

This book speaks to the practice of philantrophy of tommorow, and the issues that will shape the philantrophic and nonprofit environment just over the horizon. Written as a series of short essays—the busy manager or board memeber can tackle with limited time. The essays are not merely statements of existing conditions or ruminations on the values of service rather they raise unsettling questions about the very assumptions upon which nonprofits are built and from which philanthropic dollars flow. The book is intended to provoke thoughtful debate as well as illuminate elusive objective data.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2004-08-19

As a college student and aspiring civil servant, I definitely recommend this title to all young people who are interested in the nonprofit world. Dr. Raymond's explanations are clear, understandible, and precise. Even in the community work I do as an extra-curricular activity, I have seen the beginnings of some of the trends Dr. Raymond outlines. A friend even used this book as a reference for a sociology paper.

For any young person who hopes to spend part of their professional life in nonprofits, this book is a great introduction to the field. You really get a sense of the kinds of issues that will be faced by organizations in the next 10 years.

              5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and Insightful.......2004-08-03

This book should be read by anyone who is interested in the future of philanthropy. The author shows how economic trends will affect donors and recipients alike, and points out the challenges -- from ethics to fiscal responsibility -- that nonprofits will increasingly face. The style is refreshing and the scholarship superb.

5 out of 5 stars Must read in nonprofit sector.......2004-06-02

As usual, Dr. Raymond excels at asking the tough questions, even if easy or pat answers are not available. She realizes that nonprofit status - that philanthropy itself - is a grant made on the public commons and that therefore, nonprofits and those that support them must hold themselves to a higher standard. I've been reading her newsletters forever. Get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Prisoner in China .......2007-03-14

Some of the most interesting stories coming out of World War II are those of civilians interned by the Japanese in Southeast Asia and China. The Japanese treatment of American and other soldiers taken prisoner was brutal in the extreme; their treatment of civilians, while hardly exemplary, was less harsh.

Author Masters writes of the experiences of her family in World War II in Japanese occupied China, including a two year confinement in Weihsein detention center along with more than one thousand British, American, and other Westerners. She writes in the form of a non-fiction novel. The major events in the book are factual and her recollections seem also to be factual, tallying closely with several other accounts of life in Weihsien.

Weihsien was one of the most lenient and humane of the Japanese camps. The inhabitants were allowed to manage most of their own affairs and their hardships were bearable compared to internees of other camps. The stress on them was mental -- including the sudden turnabout of events in which prominent men of affairs, business, and religion found themselves cleaning toilets and boiling soup and sleeping cheek by jowl with incompatible companions. The author was a teenage girl during her confinement and thus we see the camp and the people from her view.

I found the book fascinating for its accounts of foreigners living in China before and during the war and the interplay of a wildly assorted group of internees at Weihsien. Some of the characters in the book are given their real names: Eric Liddell, for example, the Olympic gold-medal winner and missionary (remember Chariots of Fire?). Others, such as the obnoxious American missionaries, the Hattons, seem to have fictional names. One would hope that the author will publish someday a revision of the book using the real names of the inmates of Weihsein. "Mushroom Years" is a good reading experience for those who wish to explore the less-trodden byways of World War II in the Pacific.

                    Smallchief.

5 out of 5 stars Destined to be a Classic in its Genre.......2000-10-12

As an historian of the Greater East Asia and Pacific War and as a lawyer specializing on war crimes trials of that period, I am normally rather worried when I read an eyewitness account of that time where the writer makes free use of direct quotations in inverted commas. Pamela Masters, however, has managed to fuse together a tremendous amount of historical detail, atmosphere and artistic license.

Pamela Masters' objective, plainly, was to explain and to convey the authentic atmosphere of a period which she experienced as an attractive young English teenager who had grown up in the port of Chinwangtao, a few miles south of the Great Wall of China and had gone to school in Tientsin. She has done so with an acute sense of timing, something rather rare among professional artists such as became later in California. That is what an historian or biographer seeks to do, too, but she IS an artist and has chosen to employ different tools and techniques to recall what she remembers. And she succeeds admirably: this is a quite splendid account. It isn't strictly "history" but it is about a time, long past, in which the colours, shapes, images and individual personalities come alive. And what a vivid picture she conveys to family, friends and the wider world!

Superficially, THE MUSHROOM YEARS seems "factionalised", the kind of work where a meticulous reader can never be quite sure whether to take a particular event portrayed in it as completely factually accurate in detail, something that can be "cited" as such, or whether it should be taken as an outward and visible artistic impression compounded from a multitude of experiences that the author has known both directly and indirectly. On reading the book, I presumed that in fact it contained elements of both, and that, for me, was both part of its great achievement in conveying great verisimilitude, and, for a time that was part of what I believed was my loss, too, for I dared not "cite" it as historical evidence. On checking with the author, however, I am happy to report that I now am satisfied that all but one of the characters were strictly historical individuals whose conduct was recalled with great care. Although the names of some have no doubt been changed to protect a few sensitive, diffident souls, or the reputations of others who were venal, mad or bad, the author has not found it necessary to invent a cast of characters to represent the KINDS of people she encountered in those days. And so I found myself yearning to know more about these individual people and their experiences, completely captivated by this extraordinarily honest and evocative story.

Most unusually for works in this genre, this book is not Japanophobic. And at a time when westerners have become accustomed to depicting all Japanese soldiers as serial rapists of western women, it is salutary as well as troubling to be reminded that such horrors were almost exclusively experienced by Chinese and other Asian victims, not by western captives. Since sociologists nowadays maintain that sexual abuse is all about power and hatred, not about sexual appetites or preferences, it would appear that there is still much to learn about such pathological behaviour in time of war.

There is a good deal here about the nature of fear, privation and loss. But most memorable of all are the affection that the author and her family had for China and the Chinese; the clarity with which she portrays the relationship between the Chinese, Japanese and British and other expatriate foreigners in North China. And then there are the unforgettable and amusing accounts of the mutual antipathy that existed between most of the several thousand internees and missionaries who ended up in Weihsien Prison Camp (although there were some of the latter in the camp, like the Olympian runner Eric Liddell, whose truly Christian life and tragic end were rightly celebrated in "Chariots of Fire" and are rightly honoured here, too). More remarkable still is the fairness of Pamela Masters' description of the fastidiousness of most of their Japanese guards at Weihsien, who -- most fortunately for the author, her parents, two sisters and their fellow prisoner -- had been drawn from the elite Japanese Legation Guards rather than from the dregs of humanity and unspeakable miscreants who brutalized so many hundreds of thousands of Allied Prisoners of War, Civilian Internees and tens of millions of peoples in Japanese-occupied territories elsewhere during the Greater East Asia and Pacific War. By the time of their liberation by the OSS, the prisoners even took steps to do what they could at Weihsien to shield their former guards from retribution by Chinese Communist forces surrounding their position, and it should come as no surprise to learn that none of these guards were to face trial as war criminals, not even two whom the internees malevolently nicknamed "Gold Tooth" and "King Kong". In the words Pamela Masters gives to her father shortly before leaving camp, "'Wonder what's going to happen to that poor bugger and his family now,' Dad said, with a faraway look, '... or all the decent Japanese civilians. God, war has a way of making our enemies friends, and our friends enemies.'"

I am happy to recommend this book to anyone between the ages of 12 and 102. It is an authentic voice from a long-vanished era, and if there be any real justice in this life, it will one-day become the basis for a truly splendid full-length feature film. I, for one, will want to see that, too.

5 out of 5 stars This is not only a tale of survival but also of forgiveness........1999-11-20

I expected The Mushroom Years to be a story about surviving the ordeal of imprisonment and depravation. However, it is clearly far more than that. I realized early on that that would have been the easy road to take. Ms. Masters has written about her family's years of hardship by first introducing the reader to their life prior to their internment. It was an exciting and priveleged life which turned into one of deprivation for her parents and their three teenage daughters. I was most impressed with the lack of anger and resentment in Ms. Masters' chronicle of her experience at the hands of her captors. I finished the book wanting a sequel because she had drawn me into the lives of the characters who played a role in this most enjoyable true life story of forgiveness and charity in the face of brutal hardships.

                    Book Description

The recapture of Jerusalem, the siege of the Acre, the fall of Tripoli, the effect in Baghdad of events in Syria; these and other happening were faithfully recorded by Arab historians during the two centuries of the Crusades. For the first time contemporary accounts of the fighting between Muslim and Christian have been translated into English, and the Western reader can learn 'the other side' of the Holy War.
Seventeen authors are represented in the extracts in this work, which have been drawn from various types of historical writings. The excerpts are taken firstly from the general histories of the Muslim world, then from chronicles of cities, regions and their dynasties, and finally from biographies or records of the deeds of certain persons. The Arab histories of the Crusades compare favorably with their Christian counterparts in their rich accumulation of material and chronological information. Another of their merits is their faithful characterization, which they practiced in the brief but illuminating sketches of enemy leaders: Baldwin II's shrewdness, Richard Coeur de Lion's prowess in war, the indomitable energy of Conrad of Motferrat, Frederick II's diplomacy. The chronicles are generous, naturally, with their praises of the great champions of the Muslim resistance, especially of Saladin, who towers above all the other leaders in heroic stature. Although, this book gives a sweeping and stimulating view of the Crusades seen through Arab eyes.

A considerable amount of history during the early Middle Ages was written by Middle Easterners, and their scholarship should be taken seriously, as shown in this book. There is a lot of information appropriate to the issues in the region even now. See other reviews in the resource library at civilsociety dot seedwiki

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion Material.......2006-07-04

As other reviewers have noted, this book is an engrossing, highly informative text, that is (generally) quite an easy read. It can be gory and propagandistic at times, as some have noted. Overall, it's a very good digest of Muslim narratives of several key events.

The main drawback is that I would not consider this a stand-alone book, particularly on a lot of the convoluted political arrangements - I'd suggest Wasserman's "Templars & the Assassins: The Militia of Heaven" for that - and I really don't think one can get the full understanding of the Muslim mentality in fighting the Crusaders from it. For that I'd suggest al-Sulami's "Way of Sufi Chivalry" (for those on a budget) or preferably Sabzawari's "Royal Book of Spiritual Chivalry" (for those who aren't) to get into the mindset of the Muslim warriors. For while "Arab Historians" includes a lot personal commentary from the authors, these last two books were written as guides for the emirs and warriors, and once reading them one gets the feeling that "Arab Historians" was written by some military public relations officer.

Still a highly recommended, enjoyable read, though.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful source material.......2006-03-26

Once you've read the popular histories of the Crusades, and your appetite for the original source materials has been whetted by the excerpts in Payne, Runciman, etc., you will want this book. It's THE source reader for the Arab perspectives, better in many ways than The Crusades Through Arab Eyes (Maalouf). You get the flavor of the culture as well as their particular slant on the events and personalities. And the snarky footnotes can be delicious!

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-22

A very good source, especially for those who have read about the Crusades and understand the context of the writings. This book is not an overview of the crusades or of a single crusade; it is selections from the writings of Arabic historians placed in a chronological order. Easy to read, detailed and engrossing; both useful and enjoyable.

                    5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-09-07

A good book. It has many parallels with accounts of the original Muslim invasions and subsequent 700 year occupation of most of the Iberian (Spain/Portugal) Penninsula. Due to this initial Muslim invasion and occupation of Christian Europe, the Christian Crusades were launched into Spain and the Holy Land. Same story in the Balkans and Anatolia with the Seljuk and Ottoman Turk invasions of those Christian lands. First hand accounts of events always make for good reading. A good book, unfortunately I lost it.

                          Book Description

We humans have strong emotional responses to the voices of the birds. Their songs can soothe the spirit and bring joy to our lives. They can also, like Poe's raven, arouse darker feelings. Listening to their melodic notes, we wonder, are birds really making music? Are they singing only to one another, or do they sing to us too. Poets and musicians have borrowed from and celebrated the songs of birds in their work. Scientists have been inspired by bird song and analyzed it, solving some of its mysteries but leaving many others untouched. MUSIC OF THE BIRDS tells why birds sing and which are the finest singers. It celebrates the many varieties of bird song: flight songs, night songs, and dawn choruses. It explores the messages of poets and shows how to appreciate every bird song we hear, no matter how beautiful or mundane. Music of the Birds will be valuable to anyone interested in birds, from beginner to expert.

Lang Elliott's MUSIC OF THE BIRDS combines an engaging and informative text with some of the finest bird photographs ever published, then ices the cake with a bird-song CD like no other. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Most spectacular nature book in many a year.......2000-03-25

If you love nature and are not familiar with the work of Lang Elliott, then do yourself a favor and get acquainted with him pronto! Elliott is one of America's foremost natural sound recordists and nature photographers, and here, in "Music of the Birds," he uses both talents to great effect. The author of "Common Birds and Their Songs," "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Eastern Region," and numerous CDs of nature's sounds here presents an examination of bird song and why it has fascinated humans for many centuries.

The book examines bird song from two main perspectives: scientific and aesthetic. Elliott dispenses solid, basic science on why birds sing, the functions of specialized bird vocalizations, and other topics that have been examined by ornithologists. He also discusses how bird songs have influenced poets, with many examples from the writings of some of the greatest of all time. Indeed, it is not difficult to see how the songs of such great singers as thrushes, larks, or others inspired writers as diverse as Shelley, Whitman, and Thoreau.

Aside from the text, the book is graced with spectacular photos, virtually all of them taken by Elliott and in magificent color, of singing birds. Any birder who knows the difficuly in spotting such songbirds as warblers will be astonished by Elliott's photos of these and many more, in the act of singing no less! As if this were not enough, tucked inside the back cover you will find a compact disc of bird songs also produced by Elliott and technically superb (as are all of his productions). Virtually every bird mentioned in the text is heard on the CD, and Elliott takes time to examine special cases of particularly striking bird songs. For example, he plays the songs of thrushes at normal and slowed-down speeds so you can hear how complicated they really are (the human ear is ill-constructed to grasp all of the sounds contained in the songs of many birds).

For its combination of both educational and entertainment value, this book is hard to beat. Lang Elliott is carrying the torch of a mostly-vanished generation of naturalists who believed in exposing the wonder in the simple worlds not so far from our own backyards (most of the birds presented here are common in at least some parts of North America). Look at these glorious pictures, listen to the splendid sounds of the birds on your CD player, and if you haven't cultivated a love of birds, you probably never will.

Derek Anderson is one of my favorite book illustrators, and how wonderful it is to see him illustrate this well-loved verse in a Thanksgiving book. I was lucky enough to see the illustrations months ago when Anderson did a signing at the Red Balloon in St. Paul, the Twin Cities leading children's bookstore. Anderson's whimsy brings the perfect touch to this tale. I also love a book about a Gorilla that he both wrote and illustrated, "Gladys Goes to Lunch" -- that's the one I was introduced to at the Red Balloon, where I bought multiple copies for kids on my gift list. A rare talent.

                            Book Description

                            Albuquerque is a turkey.
                            And he’s feathered,
                            And he’s fine…

What a cheerful, animal-friendly twist on Thanksgiving! Lively rhyme—which kids can sing to the tune of “My Darling Clementine”—captures the heartwarming friendship between a man and his pet turkey. As the holiday approaches, and the man begins to shop and cook, Albuquerque starts to get nervous. Will he end up as dinner? Young readers are in for a big and happy surprise.

Lucinda McQueen—whose art has graced dozens of board and picture books—has created adorable pictures that perfectly complement B.G. Ford’s beguiling verse.
