Ode to the Outhouse: A Tribute to a Vanishing American Icon
ASIN: 1552090620 |
Book Description
Everyone recognizes the location and shape of the outhouse. The traditional look, weatherbeaten planks, sloping roof, crescent moon cut out of the flapping door, brings up a nostalgic smile to anyone who grew up in the country.
Age and gravity have taken their toll on the outhouses of North America. Here and there outhouses have been treasured, preserved and used. In the age of the plastic flamingo, tanning salons and "lite" beer there is something very sturdy, basic and reassuring about the home-made structure. It endures.
The Outhouse Revisited presents a fine collection of these useful little buildings. The best days of some are long past; others are obviously the objects of loving attention and preservation. All have this in common: when you really want to find one, there is no sight more welcome.

Indispensable, but not infallible.......2007-10-03
This really is an indispensable book for anyone seriously interested in pottery as an art or profession. It contains lots of great information. It also contains some errors, most of which are little. Also, the rendition of the Chinese character for "raku" is ugly and missing a stroke. The title says this is a dictionary of materials and techniques - but it's more than that. It can serve as a jargon glossary, too. Also, some articles seem more concerned about meaning and interpretation and make practically no mention of materials or technique, and in the case of the "Teapots" entry, I thought it culturally-biased and incomplete. That said, get it anyway, this book is a must-have.
Extensive, Exhaustive, Excellent.......2007-05-12
The Potter's Dictionary offers details and facts about everything ceramic. Clay and glaze materials are explained more in-depth in this book than any other I have read. Subjects are presented in a clear and concise manner and the alphabetical order makes things very easy to find. It's more like an encyclopedia than a dictionary. When needed, great graphics complement many of the articles. No wonder this book has been published since 1975, A+!!!
3 weeks and no sign of this book ?.......2006-07-08
This book never arrived even though i paid Amazon / UPS for next day delivery. I ended up getting it from Barnes and Noble in San Diego
OK.......2006-03-09
This book had good reviews, but it seemed overly technical without context. For example, if some chemical compound was defined, the authors did not explain how that chemical compound is used, how it can be used, etc.
Every potter needs this book.......2005-10-18
After one ceramics class I set up my own studio and began potting for a living. I bought this book and found it indespensable. I highly reccommend it to all my students. It is worth it's weight in gold luster glaze

A Potter's Guidebook.......2002-02-27
Refreshing approach, this reverse dictionary! Outstanding aid for collectors, and a MUST HAVE for studio ceramists. Anyone in need of an easy reference guide to ware types chocked full of nit-picking details on the whats and wheres and howtos ... and whys ... will cherish this book's offerings. And, potters rejoice, for a book by a potter for potters. And historins? They are treated to a treasure trove. Hats off to the author. Hope he/she has more on the way.
Reverse Dictionaries.......2001-09-19
Reverse dictionaries, references that list subjects by their common descriptions rather than by their common "names" (brands, manufacture, location, etc.), are handy indeed, and needed for most all subjects. Hooray, then, that someone has finally come up with a reverse dictionary for ceramics, where one can, for instance, look for PORCELAIN, get a DETAILED DESCRIPTION, and then be treated to where one can find EXEMPLARY PIECES. That this dictionary has been put together by a long-time practicing ceramist adds unusual and very helpful richness.
Highly recommended for anyone's library.

London: A City Revealed (Illustrated Reference)
ASIN: 0007166362 |
Book Description
This is a collection of images, the majority from the photographic archives of "The Times", taken over a 90-year period by a large team of photographers. Together they provide a kaleidoscope of images of London, different than previous collections. These images display an unusual portrait of the nation's capital: most people would recognise Trafalgar Square, but very few have seen it from Nelson's point of view; many people have seen the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, but not its cavernous interior. The multicultural nature of London is evidenced in the street markets, the rough sleepers, the commuters and the population eating and drinking in the bars and cafes. Along with Ian Harrison's informative narrative it provides an interesting portrait of a multi-faceted city.

Book Description
What are the real effects of inflation? These collected articles constitute what is perhaps the definitive study of pricing models under inflation, providing a solid basis for further research on this elusive question. Covering a broad range of theory and applications by well-known microeconomists, the eighteen contributions evaluate the effects of inflation on aggregate output and on welfare and reveal the scope of recent efforts to explicitly incorporate frictions in economic models.
A basic building block common to most of the essays in this volume is the observation that individual firms change nominal prices intermittently. The frequency and size of nominal price changes are influenced by the cost of price adjustment and changes in the economic environment, production costs, market demand, market structure, and most important, inflation. Thus the degree of nominal rigidity is influenced by the economic environment, and in a dynamic context.
Two introductory essays survey the empirical studies of pricing policies by individual firms and the theoretical efforts to integrate the nominal rigidities at the micro level into macro relationships. The essays that follow treat the general problem of optimal dynamic adjustment in the presence of convex costs of adjustment, include applications of the inventory models to the case of nominal price adjustment by an individual firm, address the question of aggregation, introduce active search by consumers, and provide empirical analysis of nominal price rigidities.
Eytan Sheshinski is Professor of Economics at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Yoram Weiss is Professor of Economics at Tel Aviv University.

Not like the other Arco books.......2003-01-31
I bought this book ... when I received word from my dad that GM was taking referals for Industrial Mechanics and he turned my name in. I needed to quickly brush up on my mathematical and mechanical skills before taking the pre-employment exam. This book really let me down.
First - It didn't cover anything about how to do any of the shop mathematics until after you (the reader) had taken the practice exams. NO formulas, equations, NOTHING! And they DID explain it at the end of the exams, but not well enough to understand where you the reader screwed up.
Second - There were so many errors I lost count and closed the book never to read it again. Several of their answers were wrong; there were many typos and miscalculations. I don't buy a preparation guide for errors all it will do is confuse you as to if you are correct or forgot how to do arithmetic. I checked several of their calculations with a TI-90 calculator and the answers I received were not the same as theirs. ...
Good Book.......2001-11-05
It has a lot of useful information, but for the mechanically inclined test takers, you don't need this book.
I took the AFOQT and I used all of my practical knowledge and experience to answer the mechanical comprehension questions.
This book is useful for those who have no idea what a lugnut is, or why Ford puts a differential in the rear of RWD cars.
Mechanical Aptitude and Spatial Relations Tests.......2000-07-17
This book is a perfect tool for anyone wishing to prepare for any basic mechanical aptitude test. These tests are common screening tools for companies who hire mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation craft personnel. It includes basic lessons for each area, such as pattern analysis, cube counting, etc. and then is followed by sample tests. It contains many test-taking tips and tricks, which can be extremely useful. It is simple, well organized and easy to understand. A must for anyone with a mechanical aptitude test in their future.

Who in the world is Pelagius?.......2000-03-26
There many things that can be said about the crusades, and often, many things have been said about the crusades. Donovan's work is a little different. His intention is to focus on Pelagius, papal legate and somewhat leader of the Fifth Crusade. This book is not for those with simply a passing interest in the crusades. It is instead intended by the author to be an overview of the success and failure of the Fifth Crusade specifically, and how Pelagius contributed to that. He says in his Preface, "The life of Pelagius does not offer any solution for our current world problems. It is not even 'escape literature.'" This should be noted before deciding to read this book. While Donovan's book is very interesting and presents a vivid description of the Fifth Crusade, this book is not meant for everyone, only those who have an extreme interest in either Pelagius or the Fifth Crusade.

Book Description
The companion to the Oscar -nominated film, Winged Migration is the definitive visual account of its subject: the extraordinary flights of migrating birds around the world. Migration is an enigma. Who knows why the cuckoo, born in Europe, flies alone to the far forests of Africa, home of its ancestors? Or how the Arctic tern can fly over ten thousand miles on its astonishing journey from pole to pole? Winged Migration follows single birds and whole squadrons on their restless flights seeking answers to such riddles. The result is a tour de force that is testament to the patience of a globe-trotting team of filmmakers and ornithologists. With its informative text, Winged Migration offers both the general reader and the dedicated bird watcher a bird's-eye view of five continents and a grand, yet intimate, portrait of the secret life of birds.

Winged Migration - the Book.......2007-01-10
Rarely disappointed in Amazon - but this item was shipped from a book distributor. I paid full price for this book, but the item received was moderately damaged.... It might have been satisfactory if I were purchasing it for myself, but I bought it as a gift, and was embarassed because it looked like it was "damaged goods", and indeed, it was! Repeated phone calls, Voice Messages, and emails to the distributor went absolutely ignored!
Winged Migration by Perrin.......2004-06-09
This book is perfect for a school project. It contains full color
pictures of birds in the natural environment. There are pictures
of the Guacharos of the Andes, the Snowy Owl and many other
denominations on every continent including Antartica. The
presentations are larger than life depictions of nature.
Birds are shown in the migratory state; wherein, it is not
unusual to travel beyond 10,000 miles to a final destination.
The volume is well worth the price charged. This would make a great gift for the student in your house. The pictures are
on par with the National Geographic Magazine presentations
of birds in their natural habitat.
Winged Migration -- the book.......2003-12-01
My interest for this book was sparked by my having seen the video of the same name. The book, however, goes beyond the video in that it identifies specifically "the players" -gives descriptions of them, their migratory patterns, their habits and habitats, as well as explaining by example the filming of the movie. If you have not seen the video, it will open a whole new world of bird migration to you. The migrations will become, to the reader, so important, majestic, and exciting in and of themselves. The premise, very simply, is that birds migrate to survive. The book will take the reader beyond his own responsibilities of commuting to work every day; it will reaffirm for the naturalists the necessity of living each day within an already pre-established harmony ; it will move any reader to higher levels of tolerance and compassion as, with its reading, one feels with absolute and great starkness how we all fit together on this planet. The book is truly an uplifting masterpiece. And it is magnificently photographed and presented. As long as birds are migrating, this book will be timelessly and repeatedly appreciated for its, as well, as the birds', utter beauty.

From the author: We studied the flocking behavior of adult and juvenile Broad-winged Hawks (Buteo platypterus) migrating past Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in eastern Pennsylvania during September 1996 and 1997. Adults were more likely than juveniles to fly in flocks (78% versus 62%). All-juvenile flocks had a mean of 2.0 ([+ or -]0.0) birds, all-adult flocks a mean of 4.5 ([+ or -]0.4) birds, and mixed-age flocks had a mean of 4.7 ([+ or -]0.4) birds. Adults, which made up 68% of all individuals in mixed-age flocks, were the first or "lead" birds in 80% of these flocks. Most (58%) adults migrated in the first, or leading, half of such flocks, and most (68%) juveniles migrated in the trailing half. Overall, our results suggest that migrating juvenile Broad-winged Hawks are more likely to follow adults than vice versa. Following experienced adults may help juveniles in two ways, first by allowing them to find thermals more quickly, and second by enabling them to better navigate to appropriate wintering areas. Received 5 F eb. 2001, accepted 1 Nov. 2001.

From the author: During spring 2000, we captured five adult female Broad-winged Hawks (Buteo platypterus) in northcentral Minnesota and western Maryland and fitted them with satellite-received radio tags. The migrating hawks left their nesting areas about 10-15 September and moved south toward eastern Texas. They followed the Gulf Coast through Mexico and an inland course through Central America to their wintering areas. Mean fall migration distance for four hawks was about 7,000 km, and for three hawks the mean fall migration time was about 70 days and mean fall migration rate was about 100 kin/day. Three hawks arrived on their wintering areas from about 15 October to 15 December. Wintering areas tot four hawks were in Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru, between 08[degrees] 25' N, 80[degrees] 54' W and 11[degrees] 00' S, 67[degrees] 07' W. We tracked one hawk for her entire spring migration, and two hawks showed fidelity to their nest areas. Received 5 October 2002, accepted 17 March 2003.

From the author: The Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo plalypterus) breeds in eastern and central Canada and the United States, and winters in Central America and northern and central South America. Birders and ornithologists count migrating Broad-winged Hawks at dozens of traditional watch sites throughout the northeastern United States. We modeled counts of migrating Broad-winged Hawks from two raptor migration watch sites: Montclair Hawk Lookout, New Jersey, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania, to determine whether annual abundance and trend estimates from individual sites within the mid-Atlantic states are representative of the region as a whole. We restricted ourselves to counts made between 10:00 and 16:00 EST during September to standardize count effort between sites. We created one model set for annual counts and another model set for daily counts. When modeling daily counts we incorporated weather and identity of individual observers. Akaike's Information Criteria were used to select the best model from an ini tial set of competing models. Annual counts declined at both sites during 1979-1998. Broad-winged Hawk migration began, peaked, and ended later at Montclair than at Hawk Mountain, even though Hawk Mountain is 155 km west-southwest of Montclair. Mean annual counts of hawks at Montclair were more than twice those at Hawk Mountain, but were not correlated. Broad-winged Hawks counted at Montclair may not be the same birds as those counted at Hawk Mountain. Rather, the two sites may be monitoring different regional sub populations. Broad-winged Hawks counted at the two sites may use different migration tactics, with those counted at Hawk Mountain being more likely to slope soar, and those at Montclair more likely to use thermal soaring. A system of multiple watch sites is needed to monitor various breeding populations of this widely dispersed migrant.
