Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the light architect: toyo ito.......2000-04-15

toyo ito certainly is one of the most innovative architect in Japan after metabolist in 60's. I would call him the new wave Japanese architect as he not merely not follow the traditions but also think about what the new japanese architecture should be.

The simulated city concept about Japan is discribing what Japan looks like today. Ito thinks that his architecture is just like some devices to retain the flow of informations in the city. He makes his architecture to be transparency, or some call him opaque transparancy....in this book, it is a good review of his work from 70's to oo's. u could see how an architect get mature and mature in his design and also how he apply his theory in his works.

Book Description

In architecture, the interface between CAD (computer-aided drawing tools) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing tools) is a hot topic. For architects, it offers the opportunity to work in a totally new way and regain full control of the construction and manufacture of their buildings.

This book consists primarily of essays and case studies explaining and demonstrating the state-of-the-art in CAD/CAM applications for buildings. It aims to highlight critical questions and assumptions underlying the use of computers in the design and production of buildings as well as provide practical advice to practitioners interested in realising such projects.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview and critique of digital techniques.......2006-05-25

I've recently gotten ahold of a copy of this in the UK where it's already on sale, and I can recommend it as a very good survey of the current state of affairs in computer use by architects, engineers and contractors.

It has lots of articles and case studies by practicing designers and even some builders, so it's short on pie-in-the-sky promises of computers' future revolutionization of the field and long on thoughtful, insightful descriptions of what smart people are doing with these tools now.

Some of the projects featured are not the freshest (having been featured in all the architecture magazines months or a few years ago) but the exploration of methods employed on them is still good for designers trying to better integrate digital techniques into their own practice and getting beyond just electronic drafting or making pretty renderings. Students should find it interesting, too ... I guess the illustrations and print quality help justify the price.

      Book Description

The first book in an exciting new series! Many would-be artists are inspired by the works of the great masters—and Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings are among the most magnificent ever created. But how did he achieve his effects? Choose his materials? Define his approach? Susan Dorothea White, an internationally known artist and teacher, helps students gain an invaluable understanding of Da Vinci’s techniques for depicting the human form and dealing with perspective, line weight, light, shade, and character. With hundreds of images to illustrate her points, she discusses the tools he used; examines his creative techniques; analyzes some of his finest drawings in depth; and devises simple projects for practice. It’s a fantastic resource for any artist.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective On Da Vinci.......2006-05-05

This book is fascinating material for just about any artist who draws or paints. The techniques and skills that Da Vinci practiced and taught are highlighted here in a format that is simple to read and digest. The artist/author shows examples of how Da Vinci drew, what materials he used, and his most important techniques. There are even exercises that allow you to experience the techniques gleaned from Da Vinci. I can't imagine an artist who would not enjoy this book.

I don't like the way monkeys are portrayed in these Photographs. I have been a collector of monkey ephemera for one a half decades. This curious collection comes out of a desire to understand our simian cousins. I have yet to understand them. Anyway, this book gives a really misrepresented picture of what it is like to have a pet monkey. Come on! Monkeys don't go the rock shows by do-gooder rap stars. They like Willie Nelson. Then the picture of the guy petting his pet monkey at the end. It is as though the author is trying to make up for the rest of the book. I didn't see any pictures of iron birds, either.

i Risk and Business Cycles /i examines the causes of business cycles, a perennial topic of interest within economics. The author argues the case for the revival of an important role for monetary causes in business cycle theory, which challenges the current trend towards favouring purely real theories. The work also presents a critique of the traditional Austrian theory of the trade cycle. This controversial approach will ensure that the book is of interest to all those involved with business cycles, as well as Austrian economics.

            Book Description

What happened when native peoples and Spanish landowners in eighteenth-century Mexico competed for increasingly scarce water? In an unusual book that studies the interplay between the environment and colonial social institutions, Sonya Lipsett-Rivera examines the exercise of power by elites in colonial Puebla and how it brought ruin on Indian communities by denying them access to the water they needed to survive.

Because control over water was vested in the colonial bureaucracy rather than a local corps of guards, large landowners were able to manipulate the system in order to control irrigation and access for other purposes such as watering livestock. Not content to grow crops for local consumption, by the eighteenth century a creole elite emerged and, seeing an expanding and lucrative market for wheat, sugar (most of which was made clandestinely into cane brandy), corn, and livestock, they increased their production and therefore their irrigation. These owners of large haciendas and sugar plantations changed agriculture and thereby disrupted the fragile ecosystem of a semi-arid environment. Their domination of water resources denied it to smaller users, resulting in the loss of crops and animals on which Indian communities depended.

As a first study in the ecology of water in Latin America, this book delineates the social and environmental consequences of power exercised to create a monopoly over irrigation.

4 out of 5 stars Practical approaches to tough problems.......2004-06-18

How do parents cope with really difficult kids? Not the kids with the typical rebellious nature and willfulness, but the really extreme ones - the kids that seem beyond talking to, beyond reason, beyond reach? It's not easy. As Brenda Tarsa and Laura Lyons say in their book, "Successful Parents, Successful Kids," the successful road is not for the "fainthearted parent". Tarsa and Lyons provide some practical answers. In a simple, casual, readable style, Tarsa and Lyons explain how kids learn negative behavior, how many parents reinforce that behavior, and how to turns things around. It's not just theory - it's practice - and the writers get specific with suggestions and approaches. It's a must-read for parents who are at their wit's end.

5 out of 5 stars A psychotherapist who specializes in family therapy.......2004-04-05

Brenda L. Tarsa is a practicing school psychologist and Laura R. Lyons is a psychotherapist who specializes in family therapy. Together they have written Successful Parents Successful Kids: For Parents Who Have Tried Everything, a dynamite working guide to helping parents help their children prepare for a hostile outside world. From working through communication breakdowns; to creating back-up plans; to setting realistic goals; to redefining discipline, and so much more, Successful Parents Successful Kids is a superbly organized and presented guide which is enthusiastically recommended reading for parents -- and most especially for those with "problem children" that have exhausted the usual roster of parental child rearing skills.

5 out of 5 stars Successful Parents Successful Kids.......2003-10-25

I highly recommend this book to every parent and want-to-be parent. It is an easy-to-read hands-on guide to practical parenting. When the solutions are followed, everyone benefits - the parents, the children, and the whole family. The strife within the family is also reduced! That, in itself, is a great side benefit!

                  Book Description

Since the events of September 11, 2001, students and people everywhere are filled with questions about Islam. What do Muslims believe? Who is Osama bin Laden? What is a jihad? Even though Islam is a major religion with more than one billion followers worldwide and more than six million in the United States alone, there is still uncertainty and misunderstanding about the ideas, tenets, and practice of Islam. Understanding Islam and the people who believe in it has become crucially important in the greater world. The Islamic World: Past and Present is the ideal source for fostering understanding and answering questions. John Esposito's acclaimed four-volume The Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World (1995) set the standard in references on Islam. Adapted from this award-winning set, The Islamic World: Past and Present brings all the scholarship and information of the original to general readers and college and high school students. In addition to the more approachable language and user-friendly page layout, this reference covers events and changes of the last eight years. It also includes entirely new entries to provide coverage of the pre-modern world of Islam. Containing more than 300 articles, it provides an excellent, comprehensive resource for gaining understanding into a belief system that seems mysterious and incomprehensible to many.

5 out of 5 stars An informative and wonderfully illustrated book.......2001-07-03

We recently moved to our neighborhood and surprisingly found that two bluebirds live in the area. We know how scarce they have been in recent years and want to help them as much as we can, to survive and proliferate. This book is exactly what we needed. It has everything we there is to know about bluebirds, from what to feed them and how to build or purchase a house that they may nest in, without fear of other birds disturbing them. It is a great book!!!

From the author: In early March, just prior to the onset of the breeding season, responses by Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) to playbacks of the territorial song of conspecifics are more likely on sites with two nest boxes rather than one. One or two boxes were placed randomly at potential territorial sites during early winter; so responsiveness is not explained by territoriality of the previous season. Explanations for our observations include that bluebirds prefer potential territorial sites with two boxes because of increased habitat quality or that bluebirds locate two-box sites more readily than one-box sites. We infer from our result that potential territorial sites with two nesting boxes are more attractive to bluebirds than sites with only one nesting box. Received 6 Sept. 1994, accepted 1 Dec. 1994.
